they were called victory gardens because we were victorious in defeating a great enemy in world war 2. afterward, the united states struggled to get food back on everyone's plate because the previous economy was hyper focused on war efforts. now the troops are home very suddenly, so how are we to feed them suddenly?

it's now 2024. what are we victorious with? has a war been won? do we have a sudden increase in population? do we have to accommodate for a 180° shift in the economy?

no.

the gardens today are not victory gardens. they are the gardens that will feed us tomorrow, and into the future.

I like to think that as a personal project and accompany type of therapy, Peeta starts to plant stuff in Victors Village. Into the bombed soil around 12.

Just the thought of how calming itd be for him to spend his time and energy building, caring and seeing growth in a place that has been destroyed.

That perhaps Katniss eventually sees the impact it is having on Peeta but also the town to see some beauty growing. Rebirth.

That Katniss helps in their personal garden at times. It turns into a dual project. It changes and ages with them. It reflects their moods and mental states. The clippings brought inside the house and placed in vases to bring some nature inside to Katniss on the tough days when she can't seem to get outside of her own head let alone her bed.

Pressing flowers in books for Peeta to use for creative projects. Edible flowers which can be shared with the town on baked goods.

They plant a new, specific tree for each child of theirs that is born. It grows with the child.

Mellark and Everdeen, strive for an ever-green garden.

Limited Space Back Yard

Whether you live in an old neighborhood that has become crowded with people dividing their lots to put in more homes or a newly constructed neighborhood built with cookie cutter homes on postage stamp lots, you can still put in a garden within that limited space.

You could even go with a vertical garden if the yard is really, really small.
