The relationship between Tobin (Scott) and Karla (Cooke) especially, or rather the one they built, was just too precious for words. Like, he knew they were so different and that she’d piss him off (and likewise) but he still loved her so much. And that panic he had after they argued and she left… 🥺😢

Months and months ago the topic came up. Robert had been with his partner for some time now, time enough that the notion of settling down was an obtainable reality and not just a distant glimmer in the darkness.

"I think you'd make an amazing dad," his partner said happily. But there was a hesitancy in their tone. A hand on their belly, simple ring catching the sunlight. They couldn't help him in that endeavor. That had been mentioned shortly after they had begun dating; fumbling with clothes and an awkward blurting out of I can't get pregnant and a bright red blush in Robert's face.

Robert smiled and took their hand and kissed their fingers. "You'd make an amazing parent as well. I'm serious. I want to be a parent again. With you."

"So... I guess we need to find a surrogate?"

Robert tilted his head a little, like a dog hearing an unfamiliar sound. His partner chuckled at his confusion.

"Someone who can get pregnant."

That blush rose again, tinging Robert's cheekbones pink. "Or," Robert said softly, kissing his partner's knuckles and the back of their hand, "we adopt."

It was difficult to adopt. Not because of the bureaucracy; having a friend with a law enforcement background with a sister in the FBI came in handy for cultivating a reasonable facsimile of a regular human life for Robert. A century of servitude and murder and other crimes were not just swept under a rug, but buried beneath the foundation of a basement of a rug store. Robert's age became a perfectly acceptable 39 year old, his story a succinct "born and raised near London, got a degree in real estate law, moved to America, fell in love." And his partner, a mortal with no supernatural entanglements, needed no such work. Quite easily done.

The process was difficult because Robert wanted to adopt every child.

Robert's partner squeezed his hand gently. "Babe, I truly love how big your heart is, but we don't live in your heart. We have a two bedroom house."

Robert watched the toddler in the play room. Tears were stinging his eyes. The child had been orphaned and maimed in a car accident. No living family. The adoption agent had told Robert and his partner that usually babies are adopted quickly, but her having just one full arm deterred a lot of potential parents. Robert's partner scoffed at the notion of parents wanting flawless children before considering the cost of prosthetics. Robert reached over and took his partner's hand in his. Their rings clinked together, softly.

"She's perfect."

The wait between finalising the paperwork and actually bringing their daughter home was almost agonising. Robert's support group, Rebecca, Kate, his coworkers, and his partner's friends organised a baby shower.

"We know she's not a baby," Rebecca said, "but calling it a 'toddler shower' or a 'kid shower' just felt weird." She grinned and handed over a pair of matching shirts for the soon-to-be parents- a #1 DAD for Robert, a #1 PARENT for his partner.

"Have you thought about what she's gonna call you? Like, Robert's obviously gonna be 'dad' or 'daddy' or 'papa,' you know?" Karla asked as Robert got teary over more gifts- little clothes, little toys. His partner shook their head.

"I guess I can be 'mom,' but that feels... weird."

Trevante nodded. "Yeah, no offense, but you don't have mom vibes."

"Mod would be cool," Carol offers as she hands Robert an envelope containing a gift card. "It's a blend of 'mom' and 'dad,' and she can say 'Moddy and Daddy,' which sounds cute, if that's what you two want."

Robert's partner hmmed. "I kinda like that one."

"Beats being 'parent'," Rob said. Then, "no offense to the shirts you got them, Rebecca."

"None taken."

Mark gave a gentle speech about Robert's growth and progress. Robert buried his face in the crook of his partner's neck and wept happily. His partner was crying too; they never imagined in their wildest dreams that they would ever be this happy.

The first week their daughter was home, the three slept in the same bed. Their daughter was nestled between them, sleeping with a smile on her round face. Robert and his partner watched her with awe- they watched everything she did with awe, really- and whispered about the life they wanted for her. Safe and happy and never doubtful of her parent's love for her.

Robert's partner delicately kissed their daughter's forehead. Robert followed their example. It was night, and it was mostly dark in their bedroom, save for the soft warm glow of the moonlight streaming through the window. It was the first time in a very, very, very long tome that he was not afraid of the dark.

Robert scooped their daughter up onto his shoulders so she could see the parade. She shrieked with delight and nearly dropped her cotton candy on her father's head.

"Hey, no fair," her moddy said jokingly, "I wanna see, too!" Moddy pretended to start climbing Robert. Their daughter squealed and kicked her little legs in Robert's grasp.

"Nooo, Daddy's only got room for me!"

Moddy laughed and patted their daughter's little foot. "Oh, you're right, I guess we'll have to take turns on Daddy's shoulders then, huh?"

"Yup!" Their daughter handed her cotton candy to Moddy so she could tug Robert's unruly hair. "Daddy, hold Moddy up next, okay?" Robert laughed and smiled and leaned down carefully to kiss his partner, which elicited an 'ewwww!' from their daughter.

Robert cried on their daughter's first day of school.

"What if she misses us? What if they mock her prosthetic arm? What if they bully her for being adopted?

"She'll be okay, snickerdoodle. We raised her to be tough. She knows Aunt Rebecca and Aunt Kate will arrest the bullies." His partner smiles and kisses his tear-stained cheek.

"She's so lucky to have a dad like you." A pause. "I'm so lucky to have a husband like you."

Robert sniffles and smiles. "If it's a contest of luck, I hit the ultimate jackpot with you two."

For Halloween, their daughter is a vampire. She's running around the house in a cape and yelling around plastic fangs, "I am a vampire! I'm so scary! Give me candy!"

Robert had objected to the costume initially and when their daughter asked why he gave her the reasoning I'm afraid of vampires. It wasn't a lie. Their daughter had giggled and told him, "I will be a good vampire, I'll fight the bad ones to keep you safe Daddy."

Moddy put a stop to the running by announcing it was time to go terrorise the neighbourhood. "Where's your costume, Moddy?" their daughter asks.

"I'm a werewolf."

"But you look like you!"

"Well, it's not a full moon tonight, is it?"

Their daughter argues that that is a silly costume and bounds to the door, eager to participate with the ghosts and ghouls outside. Moddy turns to Robert.

"You sure you'll be okay alone? We'll be gone about an hour."

Robert nods and adjusts the orange ears on his headband- he's a tiger this year. "Someone's got to be here for the trick or treaters."

Their partner stands on their toes to press a kiss to his lips. "I love you, my good boy." A shriek of disgust rang out from their daughter.

"Halloween's supposed t'be fun scary, not gross scary!"

Moddy smirks and wraps their arms around Robert and makes loud MWAH kissy noises as they pepper his face. Their daughter giggles and yelps "nooooo!" and reaches for the doorknob. Then, she remembers something, and dashes off to find her backpack.

She returns and presents her daddy with a craft stick cross covered in bright pink glittery craft paint.

"This will keep you safe while me an' Moddy are gone" she says with a serious tone. Then, excitedly, to Moddy, "let's go! We gotta go before all the good candy's gone!"

Robert presses the cross to his chest. He smiles bright.

'...'Blackout'

Christopher Eccleston headlines Blackout, a three-part gritty northern drama that aired on BBC One in 2012. Eccleston stars as corrupt councilman Daniel Demoys, whose destructive behavior leads to blackouts from heavy drinking. His family, including his daughter Meg (Cooke), suffers from his alcoholism. When Daniel goes on a bender one night, it results in a torrid affair with a woman he meets in a bar and the killing of a local businessman to whom he's awarded expensive contracts, neither of which he remembers the next morning.

While the local detective (Andrew Scott) is investigating him, and Daniel himself is trying to piece together what happened while also sleeping with the detective's wife, his attempts at redemption actually get him elected mayor. The series was not particularly well-liked (I wonder why), but it did get nominated for several BAFTAs, and it's interesting to see Cooke in her first role, playing an innocent whose life is falling apart...

'Modern Love'

Modern Love was the sort of half-baked anthology series that got carelessly greenlit during the height of the streaming wars by services with too much money, too many people saying yes, and not enough long-term strategy. Inspired by the New York Times column of the same name, it supposedly explored relationships, love, and human connections, but in reality, it was just a bunch of short one-two-episode films loosely structured together that would never have been made separately. It lasted two seasons; the second hit the buzzsaw of the pandemic, was released with zero fanfare, and disappeared into the unmarketed ether.

This episode, "Hers Was a World of One," explores the experiences of a couple, Tobin (Andrew Scott) and Andy (Brandon Kyle Goodman), who yearn for a family. Although warned that using a surrogate mother may complicate the adoption process, they are matched with Karla (Cooke), a stranger who is both nomadic and homeless. She moves into their apartment, and there's some friction as they discover how vastly different their lives are...'

(Also, I’m cracking up at you thinking I’m a “cool theater person,” because I promise that’s a wonderfully accidental illusion; in reality, I’m just a cryptid who’s entire genetic makeup consists of triple-espresso lattes, Gmail push notifications, Shakespeare plays, and tears. But you’re very kind!)

Before I answer this amazing Ask, I think I should clarify that my dreamcast for LLL already exists — or, at least, it existed in 2018 — and I had the dazzling, life-affirming pleasure of seeing them perform my beloved plotless comedy at my favorite theater festival on the planet: the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

So here’s to Amanda Dennart and her IMPECCABLE Love’s Labour’s Lost:

BUT NOW TO THE MAIN EVENT:

Critically, I think LLL is a play about eight young people experiencing love for the first time and struggling to reconcile that love with their desire to be the Cleverest Person in the Room. Like so many whip-smart young people, the Crazy Eight equate cavalier carelessness with power, but the problem is: true love requires radical, wholehearted, unbearable vulnerability. It demands chaos and madness and mess and mistakes. True love asks us to be willing to look like an idiot. And most young people just aren’t ready for that, the first time it happens. It’s why the ending of this play is so goddam devastating.

And it’s why it’s so important to me that my cast list for the Crazy Eight reflects the youth, innocence, and inexperience I see baked into every one of their lines. Love has to seem like a first-time visitor to all of them. Love has to shake up their worldview like a snow globe, bowl them over, and then leave them impermeably altered. Love has to be the thing that makes them grow up. 

So, with that, I am proud to present...

~THE NAVARRE NERDS~

1. KING FERDINAND OF NAVARRE — Paapa Essiedu

Love of my complete life. I don’t know if there’s a better actor with a bigger heart anywhere on earth. His Henry VI was utterly inspired, so I know he can be Kingly. Plus, he’s a passionate advocate for decolonizing Shakespeare and making classical theater accessible to all and...yeah. I adore him. 

2. BEROWNE — Anthony Boyle

THIS IDIOT. I had to find a picture of him laughing, because he’s played a lot of Moody Broody Types, but OMG when he cracks a grin... Anthony is just a jewel of an actor: versatile, intense, thoughtful, emotionally articulate. He’ll keep Paapa’s Ferdie laughing, but also bring out the big guns for Berowne’s gorgeous character arc from horny cynic to lovesick wooer to chastened fool.

3. DUMAINE — Alfred Enoch

Perfect angel darling. There’s no doubt in my mind that Alfie can do Smug, Suave, Would-Be-James Bond Dumaine as well as Dorky, Clumsy, Foot-Constantly-in-Mouth Dumaine with equal flair. Also, I love him. <3

4. LONGAVILLE — George MacKay

Apparently, this sweetheart is playing Hamlet soon in the new Ophelia movie, which is HILARIOUS, because he looks like the most Innocent Innocent to ever Innocent. I suppose this is what makes him a good actor. And he is very good.

~LES FILLES~

5. PRINCESS OF FRANCE — Lily James

This goddess is always getting cast as ingenues who fall in love with their eyes and hearts wide open, which is all fine and good. But I wanna see her fall in love against her will, against her better judgment, and with stubborn denial attending her every step of the way...partly because Lily is up to the challenge, and partly because it would be precious af.

6. ROSALINE — Karla Crome

BAMF. Berowne won’t know what hit him. Karla is talented in a way most of us can only dream about, but even more importantly, she is whip-smart, self-possessed, and in love with herself. Get it, girl.

7. KATHARINE — Shay Mitchell

It’s hard to beat Shay for Sleek, Feline Intelligence. I like to imagine Katharine as the ultimate duchess: rich, spoiled, overeducated, overprivileged, dressed to the nines every minute of every day. But she carries so much pain behind the mask. Being fabulous is no substitute for losing your big sister. And I think Shay can do justice to all those layers.

8. MARIA — Francesca Mills

I had the honor of seeing Francesca in Rachel Chavkin’s epic production of American Clock at the Old Vic this past winter. In a cast of over 20 brilliant actors, she emerged as the brightest star. I have never fallen in love with an actress so quickly. Sweet, inquisitive, sassy, and smart, with a crystalline voice, Francesca is the ultimate heroine. Her Maria will be the most adorable in human history, I think.

9. BOYET — Tamsin Greig

Imho, no one does Blustery Spinster Energy better than Tamsin. (See her performance as Miss Bates in the 2009 BBC miniseries, Emma.) My favorite version of Boyet is the adult female chaperone that the Princess and her ladies gleefully dress up as a man to stymie Ferdinand’s guards. It makes 5.2 all the more giddy and revelatory, and also it just makes narrative sense. Tamsin will play the beleaguered and increasingly exasperated Wine Mom to perfection.

~THE PSEUDO-SCHOLARS~

10. DON ADRIANO DE ARMADO — Riz Ahmed

I just can’t even express how much I love Riz. He dissolves completely into every single role he plays, no matter how absurd the character may seem on paper. And that is a very pertinent qualification for playing Armado, because he has the hard-fought distinction of being the most Abjectly Batshit Character in this bonkers play. Also I just really wanna get his autograph help

11. MOTE — Kiernan Shipka

THIS GIRL. Oh man, I don’t even know where to begin. She’s so flipping good at her craft, and at such a young age!! Honestly, I’d hate her if she weren’t so damn precious. All she needs to do is learn how to do a Scottish accent and then she’ll be 100% ready to play the wee snickering Watson to Armado’s pirate-Holmes. I’ve always read Mote as Armado’s platonic life partner slash surrogate daughter. She’s probably the only person in the world who knows Armado’s social security number. (Plus, Riz is a sweetheart, so you just know they’ll become great friends!)

12. DR. HOLOFERNES — Olivia Colman

What can I say? She’ll play the broad, slapstick comic relief stock character of Il Dottore to perfection...right up until the moment she doesn’t. Then she’ll make us all sob. “This is not generous, not gentle, not humble!” (V.ii.2570)

13. NATHANIEL — Cyril Nri

Can’t you just see this angel loving the crap out of Olivia’s Holofernes?? Like, he probably built an extension onto his rectory home JUST to give the famous visiting Italian academic a place to stay during her time in Navarre. Great actor, great human, great smile. 11/10

~BELOW-STAIRS~

14. COSTARD — Andy Samberg

My only Costard. I mean, he’s the only white boy I know who could play such a cowardly fuckboi of a character without turning him into a 2-D caricature. Not to mention the fact that Andy is a spectacular improv actor, so he can invent a lot of new lines and jokes for the hallboy! Win-win!

15. JAQUENETTA — Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Because I want the oft-disregarded Jaquenetta to be the Narrator of this whole wild shebang, I need an actor who can foster a deliciously familiar, non-4th-wall relationship with the audience and/or camera. Phoebe is the undisputed Queen of this. She’ll be STELLAR. And she and Andy will make people cry from laughing so hard.

16. CONSTABLE ANTHONY DULL — Andre Braugher

I love the idea of this Juilliard-trained classical actor sitting quietly with his crossword puzzle in the back of the polished oak Navarre library, watching a group of the Dumbest Smart People in human history talking themselves into a tizzy over false Latin and prickets and excrement and bad, mis-delivered iambic hexametric sonnets and just chuckling to himself. (Also: BB99 reunion!)

17. MERCADÉ — Randall Park

Tbh, I feel bad giving such a small part to such a phenomenal actor, but the thing about Mercadé is that he is like the BIGGEST small part in all of Shakespeare. He’s right up there with the First Servant in Lear in terms of the sheer narrative punch he packs into just a few short lines. And I think the best Mercadé is the one who has a personal relationship to the Princess. Maybe he was a personal aide to her father, the King? Maybe he helped raise her? Regardless, I think their conversation at the end of 5.2 is more than just the delivery of a sad message. It’s a communion between two grieving patriots of France. I want an actor whose warm heart will shine through that brief interchange. Randall can obviously do that, tenfold.

Review : Guava Island (2019)

I’ve been a long time fan of Childish Gambino (or Donald Glover as he is known when not creating musically, and as a fan, it has been wonderful to see him become more and more relevant as an artist with each passing year.  After dropping an amazing pair of albums, being the driving force behind the work of art that is Atlanta, and booking major film roles, Glover has combined with regular collaborator Hiro Murai and Amazon Prime to release his own feature film, Guava Island. 

Guava Island, once a paradise in the middle of the world where its natives harvested a unique blue silk, eventually finds itself victim of mans’ everlasting struggle with love and war.  Deni (Donald Glover), a young musician and resident of the island, dreams of throwing a musical festival in hopes of using his notoriety and skill to unite the community and bring peace to the tense island.  Deni’s girlfriend Kofi (Rihanna) longs to get off of Guava Island, and sees that Deni is talented enough to let his music take them both wherever they want to go, but her love for him keeps her on the island in support.  To make ends meet, Kofi works at a factory that harvests the blue silk, where the tyrannical Red Cargo (Nonso Anozie) runs things with an iron fist.  Red intends on working his people seven days a week, putting him in direct opposition with Deni and his festival.  In order to make sure that his workforce stays obedient and does not miss work due to Deni’s festival, Red implements his power, creating a struggle that will impact the community of Guava Island forever.

The allegory of man and his extreme natures of love and hate, and the way this tug of war impacts paradise, is a narrative one can easily relate to.  The integration of Blue and Red culture immediately allows us to understand the severity of the conflict within the story, giving us an expositional shorthand that allows the film to embellish in its softer, more visually impacting moments.  The beauty of this pacing and visual styling is much needed, as the ominous nature of the threats that Deni faces slowly grow ever more present... in fact, upon my second watch, I found the harbingers of Red’s threat more prevalent than I originally noticed.  The tangle of human drama, suspenseful doom and old school musicals gives the film a feel similar to that of Dancer in the Dark, with the setting of despair replaced by paradise.

Speaking of musical elements and tangling different ideas together, viewing Guava Island made other work by Donald Glover suddenly make much more sense, specifically the releasing of the singles This is America and Feels Like Summer.  With no apparent album release on the horizon, the singles had no apparent context to those unfamiliar with the film, which Glover (under his musical pseudonym Childish Gambino) premiered at Coachella earlier this year.  The collaboration with Hiro Murai is also a no-brainer, as his work on the standout television show Atlanta is setting a new bar both visually and in regards to storytelling.  The visual style used in Atlanta is reflected in Guava Island, with the ‘moving picture’ approach working equally well in these vastly different settings.

The animated preamble for the film is a nice touch, as it not only provides us with proper context, but it is immediately engaging, as if to prime us for the beautiful real images we will eventually see.  The storytelling is economical but uplifting, like most folk tales and bedtime stories should be.  The integration of song and dance, specifically the aforementioned Childish Gambino singles, is unique enough to the film to fit well, but signature enough for those familiar with the work outside the film.  The echoes of the Bob Marley story were definitely not lost upon me, although the political conflict was streamlined to fit the bigger allegory.  The film clocks in at just under an hour, making the pacing effective while also making sure the film does not overstay its welcome.

Donald Glover brings a joy and exuberant love to this performance that is instantly infectious, with his curiosity and dedication to his craft equalling his smile.  Rihanna plays mostly lowkey, more than likely as to not compete with Glover’s energy, but her strong foundation helps ground the drama and stakes within the narrative.  Nonso Anozie implements the ‘kill them with kindness’ aesthetic for his villainy, offsetting his imposing size and presence in a way that really brings all of the sinister to the forefront.  Letitia Wright serves as a vocal surrogate for the greater community, providing context to all outside of the world within the conflict of the main three characters.  Appearances by Betiza Bistmark Calderon, Yansel Alberto Monagas Perez, Ayensi Amilgar Jardines Delgado, Karla Talia Pino Piloto and Alain Jonathan Amat Rodriguez round things out.

When Donald Glover first announced his departure from Community to pursue his personal works, I was definitely sad to lose the quality work he was already making, but intrigued to see what his true vision was.  I honestly, however, had no clue how truly talented he was, or how broad the scope of his vision was, but I did learn an important lesson about trusting the artists you respect by watching his journey thus far.  I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Glover, as it will surely be rewarding for all of us.
