I don't think I've ever talked about what I do for a living here. But I work in healthcare. I'm a surgical technologist at a hospital (the hand that you see in the movies that comes in from off screen to give the surgeon the scalpel). It's pretty fun... Or it was at first. As you can imagine, things have gotten really crazy over the last 2 years in healthcare. But for more reasons than just the panini. That was simply the catalyst for much bigger problems. We have been overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated the last 2 years. I don't know everyone's experiences where they've worked, but my experience has been that we've been expected to do 3-4- even 5 times the work at the same pay with no bonuses, no raises, nothing actually helpful to say thank you. The most we get is some ridiculous "hot chocolate bar" where, as we are still working hard, administration gets to serve us hot chocolate. Needless to say, most of us were too busy to attend. Besides that, we've gotten tiny, forgettable gifts sprinkled in here and there like candy or the actual meme move of pizza. Meanwhile the hospital is making more money than ever, their capital reserves increasing ten fold. Yet we're expected to handle the volume that has continued to rise, despite COVID numbers declining and staff dropping like flies as they give a big F U on their way out, with no extra compensation. The staff, as well as the patients, are suffering and they don't seem to bat an eye. This illustration was made a while back before any of this came about, but I was already tired of working in healthcare. I could already see the greed and crookedness of our system as it was, but now it's rearing its ugly head and I simply can't handle it anymore... I rarely break down at work, but today I did. I had barely eaten anything, we were rolling into the 7th hour of my 12 hour shift and there was no end in sight. After each case we would hear that there's another one coming in, and even if that were to be all the cases we did, we would still have to set up ORs for the next day. I'm tired... So, so tired... Past experience can make you stronger and calmer in present difficulties, no matter how small or large. Current experience can be food later. This is pretty much my mantra for life. This is something I wrote a couple months ago to remind myself to draw on the past as food for the present. Really, I felt myself getting hangry and wrote this meditation to calm and center myself.
