none of them had a starclan, no. in fact, hemlockclan didn't believe in an afterlife at all!

in shoalclan, the new leader would swim out to the dark tides to prove themself worthy of nine lives. the dark tides are on the edge of the territory, and though the tides there are probably not strong enough for the average adult human to be in much trouble, they're fairly dangerous to a cat. most leaders drown here and end up with eight lives instead. willetwish, notably, did not do this- doing it would be admitting that everyone was dead and she was the only choice for leadership- but got nine lives anyways.

in hemlockclan, a deputy would become leader by proving they had nine lives. after the passing (or exile) of the previous leader, the deputy would consume some kind of poison, die, and come back to life. because of this tradition, the line of succession was way, way more important in hemlockclan than it is in the others. you can't just have all your cats dying trying to be leader, after all! after the leader came the deputy, then the oldest healer, then the next oldest healer, and so on.

in tangleclan, a new leader would spend a week underground becoming one with the earth. they chose a deputy before leaving, and spent all their time in the pitch dark with no real food to speak of. leaders would have to learn what they could eat and where they could drink. some starved during the week and most were irrevocably changed by the experience.

new surgeclan leaders had to eat an albatross. now, that may sound easier than the other methods, but there's a fair amount of skill and toughness that's needed for that. albatrosses aren't exactly easy to hunt; they only touch land once every year or two to lay eggs, plus they're horrifically giant with sharp beaks and strong wings. beyond that, the surgeclan belief is that albatrosses are the reincarnation of their dead kin, so eating one could mean that you're eating your parent or best friend. it isn't easy to do, physically or emotionally. the tradition is meant to make a leader understand the kinds of things they may have to put themselves through for the good of the clan.

Based in southern Europe and taking inspiration from Greek mythology, the server features four clans- Surgeclan, Umbraclan, Valiantclan, and Zephyrclan. Embroiled in conflict, it is up to you to shape their futures.

Ramstar, once leader of Valiantclan and a dark war criminal, has been captured by Umbraclan, who herald him as a reincarnation of one of their ancient leaders. Now, the clans stand at the very precipice of war. Come join us to see what happens next!

MURKCLAN - a group of mercats living within the shadowy tangles of a kelp forest.  Known by the other clans for their dark pelts and secretive natures.

🌊 APPRENTICES: Belugapaw - a white tom with light brown paws and ears

THE UPWELLING - An oceanic season marked by brisk winds, cold water, and plenty of sunlight.  This particular combination causes an explosion of life and activity in the sea, making for plentiful hunting.

🌊 Urchinfleck pauses a lesson she’s having with her apprentice, Belugapaw when she smells something strange.  They follow the strange scent to a rock pile to discover that a rather large octopus had started living there.  This large octopus makes Belugapaw feel uneasy.

🦑 Sandstripe goes out to do some solo hunting near the surface.  He catches a fish but his prey is stolen by seabirds and he is attacked before he can dive back down to safety.  He comes back to camp with some scrapes and nobody is surprised, he should’ve known better than to try hunting near the surface during The Upwelling, birds are always a nuisance this time of year!  This leads the MurkClan cats to think about one of their neighboring clans, SurgeClan - a group of mercats known for hunting in the wide open ocean.  The MurkClan cats hope that SurgeClan’s hunting is going well.

🫧 Icebergstar brings Sandstripe and Anemoneclaw out on a border patrol.  They patrol the MurkClan-SurgeClan border and don’t encounter any SurgeClan patrols, they do however see quite a few fish on the SurgeClan side.  SurgeClan must be eating well.

🌊 Foamtail, Sunnyfreckle and Snailfang go hunting together and encounter a shark eating a seal carcass.  They wait patiently within the kelp for the shark to finish its meal, hoping to scavenge leftovers.  However when the shark leaves, the seal has been cleaned, this puts Foamtail in a bad mood.

🌊 Sandstripe gets his paw stuck in an upwalker’s net, luckily he manages to escape with only a sprain!

🦑 Fretbelly gets a very sharp rock stuck in his paw.  Later that day, Urchinfleck and Belugapaw go out to train for Belugapaw’s Dive, which will be coming up soon.  The Dive is a coming-of-age ceremony where a pearl is dropped down into a rocky chasm, the apprentice must swim down into the deep dark chasm and return to the clan with the pearl.  During their training, large rocks fall and nearly crush Belugapaw.  He is pinned into a corner but he’s able to stay calm and safely squeeze out.

🫧 Warm sunlight filters through the kelp forest and into the MurkClan Camp where Icebergstar, Sunnyfreckle, Anemoneclaw and Foamtail all bask in it together.  They feel extremely happy, blessed even.

🌊 Icebergstar and Anemoneclaw encounter a shark feasting on the remains of a sea dragon.  It’s unlikely that the shark killed it.  Icebergstar and Anemoneclaw wait until the shark leaves to scavenge some of the remaining flesh. 

🦑 Foamtail, Snailfang and Sunnyfreckle track down the scent of an intruder on MurkClan territory, they follow the scent only to discover two hidden kits.  Then, suddenly they’re attacked by a Loner!  The MurkClan cats can’t help but be impressed by this one Loner’s skill and bravery, once they calm her down they offer her a safe place to raise her kits in MurkClan.  She takes some time to think about the offer, she’d only known clan cats to be brutal, especially during the days she lived and hunted for upwalkers but they seem different this time, so she accepts their offer.

Speaking of Return of the Clans...

Here’s one of the characters for the story, first introduced under the name of G-618. I think it helps to mention that ROTC takes place way after the story of the books. I don’t want to spoil too much about this character though, so I’ll just stop here.

SurgeClan - “Weather The Battering Storm”

Similar to ShoalClan, SurgeClan lived by the ocean, though their territory was significantly rockier and had an abundance of cliffs.  The other Clans regarded them as belligerent, blunt, and arrogant.  SurgeClan argued that you had to be tough to survive, and those were simply traits that came with being tough.

SurgeClan named themselves for the rough waters they lived near.  Where ShoalClan's waters were shallow and calm, SurgeClan's were deep and treacherous.  Due to how dangerous the waters were, SurgeClan cats made no effort to learn how to swim.  Instead they focused on scaling the stone cliffs while being buffeted by the harsh winds.  Their motto, “Weather The Battering Storm”, is a reflection of their toughness and immovability.

SurgeClan's trade was seabird eggs, rock sage, chamomile, and wild garlic.  They often traded these for TangleClan’s rabbit pelts, enjoying the warmth that the soft fur provided against the harsh winds of their territory.

SurgeClan left their dead at the bottom of the cliffs, believing that their souls would be reborn as albatrosses.  They couldn’t be buried or their new bodies would be unable to take flight, choking on dirt and water until they died a second time.

The last known leader of SurgeClan was Ploverstar.  Her deputy and healer were Coastslate and Shoredusk respectively.  There are no known SurgeClan survivors at this time.

TangleClan - “Claws Sharper Than Thorns”

TangleClan's territory is an oak and birch forest filled with blackberry brambles, which gives the Clan their name.  They were regarded as sharp, prickly, and snappish, quick to interpret insults and become offended.

TangleClan pelts were often thick, ensuring that any scrapes from bramble patches never drew blood.  TangleClan cats themselves tended to be on the smaller end, and many had long, sharp claws, giving them their motto, “Claws Sharper Than Thorns”, which also stands for their fierceness.

TangleClan used rabbit pelts, blackberry leaves, foxglove, wood sage, and milkweed as their trade.  The foxglove was generally unpopular with ShoalClan and SurgeClan, but HemlockClan had strong beliefs about poison and would often trade for the whole stock.

TangleClan believed that the dead had to be buried so their life force could return to the earth.  Plants were planted on top of the burial place, often ones that the cat loved in their lifetime.  It was a form of respect, a "thank you” to the earth for giving the Clan such a wonderful cat even for a short while.

The last known leader of TangleClan was Beachstar.  His deputy and healers were Ibissnap, Rushdancer, and Petalleaves respectively.  The only TangleClan survivor is Algaesplash.

It's the silence that wakes her. There's some sound, of course- the ocean is crashing on the shore, as always, and the screams of seagulls echo in the air. But there's no movement in the camp, no squealing of kits, no murmur of warriors talking.

The apprentice shakes the moss off her pelt and slinks out of the den. There's no one. She pokes her head into the warrior's den. There's no one. She searches the nursery and the elder's den. There is no one. She screams for her mother, for Otterstar, for Raydash. There is no one. She falls asleep sobbing, her throat worn raw.

ShoalClan is gone.
