Rose never would have expected this would happen upon giving up her gem. She WAS her gem after all. Giving it up for her beloved child should have been the end of her and a new beginning for them!

Turns out it was a new beginning twofold. As she awoke in a cub's body, looking up at one of her favorite lions, she stretched and wondered what amazing new things this form would let her see. 

She hadn't sought out her son. She had hoped to let them all live independently from her. But he was much too fun to be around. And tease. The "blink if you love me" was her absolute favorite game. Only her wonderful son could think up a way to let her express her love for him so easily without words. Only Steven could link an instinctive movement to the similarly instinctive love she and so many others felt for him.

She liked to watch him sleep. It was something so human, so… organic to actually need daily rest. Sometimes she wished he would dream his way into her mind and they could talk. But this was just as well. There were snacks to devour after all, and she decided it was more fun irritating him with her antics than putting him through trauma over her past.

The only thing she truly wished to express to him was her love. Everything else he could learn in time, and he did.

Steven learned far more than she hoped he would, and her past came to haunt him over and over. When he moved the painting of her into her own mane, she longed to apologize more than ever before. She wished lions could speak, but her only option was action.

Action was what she was best at. Her powers let her be an aid to that human friend of his, the one he fused with! It warmed her lion heart to see the care, vulnerability, and communication the two were comfortable sharing with each other. Connie was not only an important link to his humanity, but also a genuinely kind kid. Who happened to know how best to pet cats.

She loved Steven to pieces, but there was no remorse around Connie. Around her, she could just be a big cat and enjoy a pure human friend. No wonder Steven cherished her so.

When it all got to be too much on Steven, she was proud to help Connie be heard by the others. She helped the lovely human get close enough to her son and reach him in his time of need. She made peace with her small role in bringing that care and support and love that Steven cultivated back to him. 

Steven put every stitch in the quilt of jagged edged fabrics, rejoicing in every good bit of flawed beings. Rose… no, he called her Lion. Lion was simply one of the many people wrapping him in the blanket of friendships he made. 

And ok, she was quite happy to be the first one to get a hug when he returned to human form. Sometimes words just weren't needed.
