“So, the little bird returns to the caves,” Keir sneered, looking down his nose at the spy.

“My Lord. It has been too long,” Mithras replied coolly.

“What brings you down here, boy?” The Hewn City Steward studied the other male with shrewd eyes.

“I have come to discuss a problem that you will face, very soon, and to propose a solution that would benefit us both.” The spy kept his voice steady, even as his heart raced.

Keir’s face pinched further into its trademark sneer, but Mithras hadn’t survived centuries without learning to read those in power. He could tell that the Steward was intrigued, and concerned.

“And what crumbs are you offering me, little bird?” Keir’s eyes narrowed.

And this was the moment from which Mithras knew there would be no turning back. Russet eyes. Pears and cinnamon, wood smoke… a white rose. No turning back. 

“I have been stationed in the Autumn Court to spy on Autumn’s heir, and have learned much.” Mithras purred.
