Bimonthly Media Roundup
- Mario Party (Video Games) - Rented a cabin in Colorado with my friends, and while we of course did some nature seeing we also just chilled at the cabin quite a bit, playing games together. We played both the newest and oldest Mario Party, and man back to back like that the first game was so unforgiving, it's hilarious. If you lost a mini game they would actively take coins from you, the games were not very intuitive (or at least didn't port to the switch right), and the random events were so often completely detrimental to you. Luckily Mari Party has always been a luck based game so in a group setting having awful in game luck is mostly just funny rather than frustrating, a good time to clown on one another.
- The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All (Manga) - Cute quick read about a girl getting a crush on a cute alt music store clerk before realizing that she's a girl. After the funny setup the manga develops into more of a yuri-centric character drama, which is still nice even if the gender-related humor is mostly gone. The art is very pretty, the alt girl is effortlessly charismatic, and all the references to American music are pretty fun to catch. A good read.
- Pokémon Stadium (Video Games) - More vacation shenanigans, We started by playing all the Pokémon Stadium 2 minigames, in which 3 of the 4 of us were evenly matched and 1 of us did hilariously bad. When we moved on to the first Pokémon Stadium mini games however, said person proceeded to annihilate of all us by a comically large margin. Anyway the games were a fun nostalgia trip, faves would have to be the lickitung game and the counting game.
- Glass Onion (Movie) - Another vacation watch, from what I've seen the general consensus is that the first movie is technically better with a more subtle and well executed message and tighter writing while the 2nd is more fun with a brighter pallet, a campier protagonist, and more oddball memorable suspects. It's been a bit since I've seen the first one but that sounds about right to me.
- Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun (Manga) - Yup.
- Sonic 2 (Movie) - Watched this as an Airplane movie, which I think it functions perfectly fine as. Knuckles was cute, I like the overall look of the characters, humor was adequate, and I liked the good vibes. I wouldn't really recommend it to non Sonic fans, but for what it was it was fun.
- Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice (Video Game) - I really liked this game, with the final case and Dhurke in particular being really great additions. The game had it's issues, with the clown case being pretty unmemorable and Nahyuta being the worst prosecutor in the series, but for the most part this was a really solid entry and possibly one of my favorites. The character design and art direction was great, the forward momentum of the plot and new locations really worked for me, and as a whole I felt the writing was a lot tighter and less mean than a lot of the prior entries. I still have the DLC case and possibly Layton crossover games to complete but otherwise I'm finished with the AA series.
- One Piece (Anime) - My Sister and I got pretty far into East Blue so far, I imagine this will be a show we will be watching for a very long time. The central 5 characters all have a fun dynamic, and the animation isn't bad for the time it came out, but boy do they drag things out with flashbacks and filler, which is really not needed given the sheer amount of material they have to work with here.
- Genshin Impact (Video Game) - Been playing a lot of this, mostly through Liyue by now. I'm having a ton of fun with the story, characters, and non combat side quests, though the wishing and level systems kind of blow with how much unnecessary grinding you have to do. On the bright side I met my girl Yanfei, who's lawsuit quest was one of my faves in the game so far for how unique it was.
Listening To: Make Up Your Mind by Florence + The Machine, Roll With The Punches, When The Tequila Runs Out, A Little Bit of Everything, All Your Favorite Bands, and Most People by Dawes, Kansas City by The New Basement Tapes, Humbug Mountain Song by Fruit Bats, Why Am I Anxious by Tom Cardy, Eat Your Young Cover and Viva La Vida but it's Epic by Reinaeiry, All These Things That I've Done by The Killers, Doin' Time Cover by Lana Del Ray

genshin impact 4.0, or as i like to call it, fantasy tears of themis ft. lifeweaver overwatch/kale vandelay hfr/mael stronghart tgaac/idk but people are drawing him with that specific kind of face and i love it
liveblog begins now
Get Out Of India And Get Your Ass To France!
People can find my previous liveblog and livetweets for what I think of the Sumeru section. I thought it was great, I loved the heist scene, but *grumbles in desi* you know how one of the most popular (and thirsted after) characters in the west right now is a DARK SKINNED INDIAN SPIDERMAN-
Paimon lore...she got tired, fell in a whirlpool, and got sucked out to sea...
sus.
... Niagara Falls...... somehow geographically across from a desert.... which also ends in a big cliff...
welcome to fontaine. literally just french for "fountain". Looks like any steampunk city but with more blue and stars. God I miss Arcane: A League of Legends story.
Neuvilette. That's the Mael Stronghart looking guy's name.
Lyney and Lynette. They're uh. little guys
we're just normal men.
CAITLYN KIRAMANN ARCANE?!
... Is this Fischl's VA? Has the same smug aura. Also, why are her eyes two different colors? Is she tainted by the Abyss or a Schneznayan puppet or something?
I'm not writing all that down Furina but I don't fuck with celebrities. I only fuck with gods.
She's so grand I hate it.
Tears of Themis 🤝 Genshin Impact Fontaine
I'm too poor and ugly for this shit
FIGHTING GODS?! BITCH I'VE GOT A RESUME
..... what the fuck is happening in this place. first god wants to beat me up, then god wants to battle me in court ace attorney - er, tears of themis style, while the rabble are saying that god-slayer traveler's DUEL would be boring while a COURT battle would be more exciting..... and now there are weird laws
that's not called being absolved of sin that's called climate change
why would you build boats that function like subway trains on giant aqueducts when you could just... make bridges with... okay I guess depending on how you do it, having aqueducts instead of roads could be pretty fast in a world without cars
How many little siblings does this guy HAVE
How many dragons is that now? There was Dvalin, Durin, Ahzdaha, the one Raiden killed, and now the Hydro one. Was there a Dendro one?
You'd think that a HYDRO city would have some kind of STEAM POWER
I love cute engineer girls! Damn, she's just an NPC.
... wh. YOU'RE A GOD OF WATER IN A STEAMPUNK CITY JUST USE HYDRO POWER TURBINES
nothing like getting the Italian mafia to beat up the French mafia
sorry to this guy who has now voiced characters in two games where his fantastic voice work is badly complimented by piss poor lip sync (swank from rain code)
Oh shit are we going to ace attorney childe? that would be really funny. he'd be such an ace attorney witness too
traveler: childe, why are you in fontaine?
childe: depression arc
So these little humanoid dog creatures are "Melusine".
Friends with benefits (the benefits are knowing all their siblings and also theater tickets)
There he is. Mr. Justice man.
Neuvilette: I think she wants you to look at her.
Paimon: Yeah, sure...
Furina: Hehehe~
Traveler: *holds up middle finger at Furina*
Oh he's literally Mael Stronghart
Lyney's VA is pulling out all the stops for this stage magician cutscene
A "bang" right in the middle of a magic show?? For sure we're going to be Ace Attorneying this chapter.
OH YEAH. OH YEAH THATS A CLEAR CASE OF SOMEONE USING STAGE MAGIC TO MURDER LIKE IN DRV3 OR AA6
Paimon puts on Groucho Goggles while quoting Sherlock Holmes. Fun...
Waiting for Rosa Tears of Themis to get isekaid to this universe with a random boy. Because I like Rosa and she's cute. And never alone.
So Lyney's rope was replaced with a flammable one. That explains the murder method, But how did Lyney switch places with Carrow, and where did Halsey disappear to?
Navia, a mob boss. Or a detective. Not sure which.
There's honestly no way they didn't take at least a LITTLE inspiration from Arcane because that's the only steampunk setting I can think of where little furry guys are common. Pookas are in Odin Sphere, but that story isn't exactly steampunk... Well, it is. And supposedly Neuvilette is the only male one.
That's how the trick itself was performed. The audience member basically got put on a giant rotating, moving elevator. So in the middle of it, someone must have hijacked the trick. They forced Halsey out and Cowell in, then escaped with Halsey.
... Lyney didn't hear the thud? How? Why?!
THEY'RE FATUI?!
It literally is the most Ace Attorney sort of thing to ask the judge for a brief recess and then talk with your client who immediately admits to being a Russian spy whose excuse for not being present during a murder scene was that he was doing spy things
yeah I was thinking, it had to be someone from the crew. how else do you tamper with the random number generator and the rope? but the real question is how did he become a victim of his own scene after the fact?
what
this is entirely out of left field. they should have gotten one of the tears of themis writers on this one.
girl your drink was spiked
yeah that was what I was thinking too. the disappeared people are being dissolved and ending up in the fountain somehow
oceanid!
aether: bye pretty oceanid! I'll find your lover for you- OH GOD THERE'S ROBOTS
... Did they honestly watch Arcane and get nothing from it? Looks like they tried to recreate Zaun and missed the fact that Zaun isn't run by women in big hats
girl...
I'm just bored throughout this entire investigation segment and then I learn that the Italian Mafia got arrested for water crimes
We're unwatering the water crimes
I was also wondering if vacher was the one who murdered the oceanid. yeah it was. and looks like we hunted down the mastermind of one piece of the murder plot
sometimes I fear that the gimmick for AA7's prosecutor will be a robot and this is why. at least we get to see the guy go ham again
Oh yeah that guy's girlfriend is in the place where all water flows to, Doyha District the fountain.
... Imagine you're a baliff, and you're at court, and the defendant wants to see his wife who has dissolved into a fountain, and the chief justice helps him, and so the chief justice takes him to the fountain, and then five minutes later the chief justice comes back and says he stuck his face in the fountain and drowned

So I’ve been playing this game called Genshin Impact. It has been described as feeling like Breath of the Wild but also feeling like an anime.
It is free, but is also a gacha game, but the gacha system (includes characters for tactical variation and harder hitting weapons) is able to be used without needing to pay anything.
The world is freaking gigantic! However, to combat how large it is most of it is locked off until you progress further in the story. I think it took me about 30 minutes (maybe an hour) to go from one end of the starting kingdom to the other and there are 7 kingdoms. There are teleport points freaking everywhere and there is a paragliding system (in the shape of wings) so you don’t have to worry.
The combat system is rather interesting. 7 element types to work with that isn’t just a rock paper scissors system. Each element is great against 2 elements, good against 2, normal against 2, and is immune to itself only. Some enemies start out with an element but there are ways to make them lose that element temporarily (though in the case of slimes and plants they are still immune) or devastate them by using it to your advantage (e.g. you can freeze an ice slime solid using water or obliterate it with fire). You have a party of 4 and can switch between them rather rapidly, so you aren’t stuck with just one element. At a certain point you will get access to the multiplayer function so you can choose if you want to take on harder enemies more easily.
The cooking system is useful. Some meals heal, some buff, none that I know of have negative affects other than being so large a meal the character feels too full to eat more for a couple minutes.
There is A LOT OF LORE! Practically everything has lore attached to it.
Quite a few mission types (though most can involve some combat on the way there): Fetch, Stealth, Puzzle, Combat, Talk, and Challenge (which is usually timed). I have not encountered any escort missions other than low risk, short ranged, “Puzzle” ones with incorporeal spirits that move at your run speed. There are occasionally random missions nearby as well as new missions daily.

Quick Thoughts on Genshin Impact
Against my better judgement, I decided to give Genshin Impact a shot last night and a bit of today. After seeing some trailers and fan content I got very curious about it and finally caved to play it. After about 6-ish hours of playing I have some thoughts on it. Overall I find this game an enjoyable experience, but I don’t think it’s going to tear my away from Arknights any time soon. And figured I’d write something a bit shorter than my usual essays as a bit of a warm up before getting to the grindstone of belting out that essay about Arknights’ Gavial Event and the fourth essay in my Liking Guilty Gear series.
Some Things of Note
This game is best played on a decent pc/laptop running at 60 fps. I tried playing this on PS4 when it first came out and found it very underwhelming due to some of the controls and slower framerate. Playing this game on my gaming PC with an Xbox 360 controller is a much better experience.
The game itself runs very smoothly even on my (comparatively) average gaming PC, so that’s something.
If you play on using a controller for this game, then I recommend an Xbox/PC controller. I’ve got some software installed to rework my PS3 dualshock for most PC games, but with Genshin Impact, a proper 360 controller works best.
The fact the A is cancel/back and B is confirm/advance is cancerous and needs to die. This is straight up sacrilege right here. It’s has to be breaking some kind of unwritten law somewhere.
Gameplay Thoughts
Really like how the elemental system works. There’s a lot of fun to be hand messing with the environment and enemies, testing out different reactions and maximizing damage by clever use of the elements and character switching.
Character switching feels good too. I don’t really care for the cooldown timer, but it’s very short and makes you plan things out a bit.
I know this game is seen as a Breath of the Wild lite, but there’s a lot about this game I like more than BotW. For one, your weapons don’t break and you have more generous inventory management. This game took out the most annoy parts of that game and it’s better for it.
Got Noelle in that free roll thing and she’s... okay. I hear you have to really build her to make her work out well, but the free characters do everything they need to do well enough. Just hope there’s a free/cheap hydro user along the lines at some point.
Every character’s functions seems clear enough by their kit, which is nice. I do find everyone a little too simple for my liking in terms of their function and kits, but they work well enough. I feel like one more elemental skill would be nice.
Story Thoughts
Only got through enough of the story to get Kaeya, Lisa, and Amber and do Amber’s first(?) story quest, but so far everything works out okay and doesn’t feel too ridiculous.
Aether/Lumine don’t suffer from the same issues I have with the Doctor from Arknights, which is very good. I wish they actively talked more in the story though, especially since they talked a lot in the intro cutscene.
The storyline itself seems simple enough and good excuse to have the Traveler explore and learn about the world while trying to find/reach their missing sibling. Very little seems like it doesn’t have a purpose or is too much of a diversion from the main quest so far.
Gacha Thoughts
For those of you the read my last essay/opinion piece on gacha games, yes, that 0.6% gacha rate bothers me something fierce. And unlike Arknights I haven’t found anything in the game’s pity system or other mechanics yet to give Genshin Impact a similar exception. If not for my nagging curiosity I would had seen that 0.6% and immediately deleted this game from my hard drive.
That said, the free-to-play party functions well enough so far and I can make it work. A free/cheap Hydro character along the way would be nice as well to have the tools to mess around with all the elements, but the free team is good in terms of function.
The one thing I can say is that I understand the harsh gacha rates from a business angle, as Genshin Impact is a much more complex game than other gacha titles and requires much more energy and time built into every character, as these aren’t basic sprites and PNGs. However, I’m still gonna’ stick to my guns in regards to how I view this as a gacha game and I can’t say I’ll be playing this game past March unless something really wows me into staying.
And those are all my immediate thoughts on the game. So far I like, might keep playing it throughout March, but can’t say I’ll continue past that much, nor can I recommend it until I play through more of it.

End of the Year 2020 pt. 1
Howdy. Another year, come and gone, and woo what a year it was huh? Just general misery all around eh? Generally speaking anyway, I am aware of how this will sound but I had a pretty good year all things considered. Sure the pandemic shut everything down, but I work overnights so I didn't really notice too much of a difference in that regard. Anyway, I'm not here to regale you with the tales of misery and woe that was this year. Let's talk instead about the best games that I personally experienced this year.
Before getting to the “awards” and pseudo awards: Games I wanted to play this year but didn't for some reason: Persona 5 Royal, Othercide, Baldur's Gate 3, Shiren the Wanderer The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate, Sense, Mortal Shell, Tower of Time, Banner of the Maid, Gujian 3, Xuan Yuan Sword VII, Necromunda Underhive Wars, Daymare 1998, Going Under, Hades, Legal Dungeon, Legend of Keepers Career of a Dungeon Master, Genshin Impact, Chronos Before the Ashes, Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics, Grim Dawn, Warhammer 40K Mechanicus, Wasteland 3, Disco Elysium, Darksiders Genesis, Minoria, Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, XCOM: Chimera Squad, 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim, and Azur Lane: Crosswave. Probably more, but this is what comes to mind.
Honorable Mentions!
Doom 2016. The Reason why this game is relegated to Honorable Mentions and not the pre-2020 list is because of the fact that this was one of the winners years ago for one of my favorite games of the year. It still is one of my favorites this year, I played it three times to completion (twice on PS4, once on PC), and honestly I don't see how you can go wrong playing it. I kind of want to see how they got the game to run on the Switch.
Tainted Grail. I bought this expecting it to be a roguelike just set in a version of Arthurian England. I was not expecting to to be a turn-based card action game. I like it quite a bit, sadly there's not really a whole lot in the game at the moment. Apparently they've recently updated it, so who knows, maybe I'm wrong here. Definitely worth getting if you dig games with card combat.
Cyberpunk 2077. I know this game is a bit of a punching bag right now, probably deservedly so. I am also aware of the raft of problems people are having in terms of the game actually functioning. However with my admittedly short amount of time with it I'm having a real fun time with it. I'd probably be farther along if I didn't stop because I'm playing around five RPGs and once and wanted to give more attention and time to something else. I hope to complete it while it's still in this state though, just so I can go back later on when "it's fixed" so I can properly compare and contrast.
Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem. It's like they took Diablo III, gave it a nice coating of Warhammer, and made it an actually fun game to play. This is pretty much what I thought Tainted Grail was going to be like in terms of gameplay, and I like it quite a bit.
Godfall. Honestly this was a contender for the 2020 games. I like this game, something about the combat is very enjoyable to me. Some of the wind ups to attack are a bit long, but I don't really hold that against this game. It's positively gorgeous to look at, and I really like the design of the characters and monsters. The story is a bit lacking, and characterization is practically non-existent, and it most certainly isn't worth paying $60+ for it ($70 if you get it on the PS5), but if you're able to snag it for around $40 (which is what I paid) it's well worth the money.
Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. Look I just thought Shang Tsung was a delightful shit in this whole story mode. He made it a real gem of a thing to play. Also Sindel. For entirely different reasons.
Magic Arena. Admittedly I've sort of fallen off from Magic since my local game store shut down, and then the pandemic happened. But I really like the cards from Ikoria, and Zendikar Rising, I felt they were a great balm to what I was thinking was a pretty lackluster year for Magic. Zendikar Rising has greatly streamlined the process of playing a match in Arena. Soon as someone plays an island and a Ruin Crab you can concede with no regrets.
Legends of Runeterra. It's a fun alternative to Arena, and one of the best card games I played this year. I keep meaning to get back to it.
Gears Tactics. I recall seeing this game at E3 in 2018 and being relatively intrigued by the idea of a Gears of War strategy game. If you have the Xbox game pass for PC it's an okay enough game to play for a bit. Basically it's a far more forgiving XCOM style of game, and it features some ideas that I wish actual XCOM would implement. The energy meter in regards to movement and actions is nice, and I like that you can move after taking a shot at an enemy. I should maybe finish it some day.
World of Horror. It's a really fun retro style RPG horror game. I love its monochrome look and retro aesthetic. Unfortunately when I played it there wasn't a whole lot available yet. I intend on going back to it at some point in 2021.
Dead by Daylight/Friday the 13th. They were pretty fun little versus games to play over the course of the year. Between the two I would recommend Dead by Daylight, Friday the 13th is kind of really lame by comparison. It looks much worse when compared to Dead by Daylight, and I can't really get into the general gameplay of searching around the camp for items to escape Jason. I wonder if in some parallel universe there is a version of DbD where Jason is just part of the roster of movie killers? I generally prefer the smaller maps and more focused objectives in DbD, there's a lot less bumbling around achieving nothing compared to F13. I like the variety of the available slashers more than the dozen or so Jasons that exist because the killers seem to be mechanically different from each other by comparison to F13. Perhaps it's only because I didn't spend much time with it, but the only real variation between the Jason's seems to be the general look of them.
Among Us/Unfortunate Spacemen. I don't really have much to say about these two other than they were a great deal of fun to play for a while. The gameplay in Among Us is really basic and can really burn you out pretty quickly. I feel the real draw of the game is the discussion/accusation section of each match, those were always a hoot. Unfortunate Spacemen meanwhile is kind of like Among Us except there's a lot more direct interaction with the alien impostor in comparison. The fact you can actually fight back against the other players is fun. There's also a singleplayer campaign which I felt was a nice addition.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon. I love the turn-based combat in this game. But once again, I was trying to play around twelve RPGs at the same time and something had to take the backseat, and sadly it was Yakuza.

Genshin Impact Nintendo Switch Release Announced, New Trailer and Gameplay Details
January 14, 2020 4:38 AM EST
Anime-like action RPG Genshin Impact by miHoYo will now release on Nintendo Switch as well as PS4, PC and smartphones.
MiHoYo published a brand new trailer for action RPG Genshin Impact, revealing the game will release on Nintendo Switch. Genshin Impact was already confirmed for PC, PS4, and mobile, and is scheduled to release on these platforms on 2020. Take note, however, that a release estimate wasn’t announced for the Switch version yet, though it’s highly likely it’ll launch in “2020” as well seeing how vast of an estimate this is. Another new trailer revealing the port town of Liyue Harbor was also revealed. Lastly, the official site revealed new gameplay details and screenshots via a new Paimon’s Sharing Session.
We first learned Genshin Impact will include character-focused quests to learn more about each of the characters.
Unlike the previous beta tests of the game, the final version will include more interactions with animals and plants. Materials collection will also be more exciting, with rare and legendary materials to find.
More screenshots and a new key visual artwork were also shared.
Both the new trailer revealing one of the new cities we’ll be able to explore in the final game, and the Switch release reveal trailer, are included below. Personally speaking, I’m pretty hyped for Genshin Impact, and a Switch release means another portable option besides smartphones. It’s important to note Genshin Impact first started off as a manga, which is still ongoing. You can find the chapters on the game’s official site. The Genshin Impact manga is pretty nice overall and the Switch release makes me even more excited now.
Genshin Impact was first announced in June 2019. The game is an action RPG where players can switch between different playable characters, each with unique abilities. You can read more on Genshin Impact with our past coverage. The previous trailer detailed the Japanese cast and some of the functionalities in the works. You can also watch more gameplay here.
