A big topic to consider. We started this discussion on our igtv, specifically about using the judgment statement "good job". ⁣ ⁣ "Good job" has become an empty statement, because we overuse it. It is also a judgment statement where children are just looking for the judgmental praise instead of the observational positive statement. Instead of our children doing something for the inevitable "good job", don't we want them to do it for themselves and feel that empowerment? Instead of "good job" try "you did it!" Tummy time tip: Using props during tummy time motivates babies to reach out in front of their bodies. As a baby tries to grab a prop while on his or her belly, he or she has to reach with an arm and hand, twist the torso, and shift body weight, all without losing balance. The ease with which a child can manage emotions impacts his or her ability to learn effectively. Whereas positive emotions leave open the pathways to higher thinking and learning, negative emotions -- interpreted by the brain’s emotional center as signs of a potential threat to survival -- trigger the fight-or-flight response in the body. Blood is directed away from those bodily areas nonessential to survival, such as the higher centers of the brain. The act of reaching for and grabbing an object is actually a milestone in a baby’s development. It helps develop eye-hand coordination. And, when the object is something that also makes a sound—like a water or sand shaker—once grasped it can also promote the concept of cause and effect. Today I simply wanted to share my new rope shelves that I just installed in my bathroom. Does simple natural decorating make you as happy as it makes me! My goal was to create a calm spa like feel (this shelf is right above my garden tub). I wanted succulents and a lantern I could turn on when I am taking a bath. Natural woods, and materials and voila. It almost feels like a piece of art! Most importantly it makes me feel a sense of calm in a chaotic world. AHH! Did you know it takes babies longer to process information than adults? Much of our life is spent trying to fill space to avoid awkward silences. But for babies, the magic happens in those silences. When you're playing with your baby......stop. Just pause and count to 12 and see what happens! In class we often use the big drum to demonstrate this process by all playing together. Then the adults stop, the babies process, the adults wait (12 seconds) and then the magic happens. The babies play. Try this technique at home,and let us know what happens! Before you scroll away, this caption is worth a glance. This week's close-up.⁣ ⁣ At first glance, these steps felt daunting. ⁣ ⁣ I was on a hike with my family to see waterfalls. You could say we were chasing them. ⁣ ⁣ I wasn't exactly practiced in my ability to climb and climb and climb, and the hiking trail looks a LOT like this ALL the way. ⁣ ⁣ However, I could visualize the payoff. The flowing water, splashing with my family, the calming sounds and of course the gorgeous pictures. So I kept going. ⁣ ⁣ I did it, I completed my hike to largest waterfall on the trail and it felt.... incredible. ⁣ ⁣ Later on, I realized that this journey is like life. Things can feel daunting can't they? They can feel hard, and scary, and long. BUT if we visualize the end result and really feel it, it gives us that drive to go after it. ⁣ ⁣ Does this remind you of something you want that you haven't achieved yet? I still have plenty of things like that. ⁣ ⁣ My 46 year old advice if you should keep reading? Take it one step at a time, but visualize the achievement, the celebration. A cool crafty tip for the day! Babies love to explore and yet so many things are dangerous when they are little and still putting things in their mouth. A great way to help them explore a bit early on is to create sensory bottles. Take some empty water bottles (clear ones of course) and put things inside them that they can shake around and look at. Maybe make one that is full of sand, another full of pom-poms, another full of fabrics, perhaps some sparkles and glitter, and so on.
