This whole thing with Amazon barely marketing The Edge of Sleep (if at all) really made me think about how indie projects just. In general are treated pretty poorly by an industry that now more than ever wants to play it âsafeâ. Stuff that comes from unconventional sources or things that arenât considered mainstream or high brow enough (animation, musical theater, and yes, independent YouTube creators being some of the ones that come to mind) are either scoffed at or set up to fail UNLESS enough people see it or itâs part of a major franchise people know about (see: Into the Spiderverse).
Masterpieces, great art, great storytelling can come from anywhere and anyone.
But we need to fight for the platform so it can be seen by everyone.
#TL;DR go watch TEOS and hype up projects that the streaming services donât give love to! go outside your comfort zone a little!#also support indie filmmaking and animation#I need that iron lung movie oh my god#the edge of sleep#the edge of sleep on prime#markiplier

my big thing with diversity in film and theater is that itâs nice to see diversity on screen/stage, but what about behind the camera or backstage? and what about the writing rooms? what about the directors and producers? when the cast is diverse but everything behind the scenes isnât, it just feels like tokenism. and when the cast and crew are diverse but the creators and those with power over the project arenât, well then itâs just replicating established power structures?
#every year i see a bunch of posts abt how these award shows are the most diverse ever !#but itâs just in acting#the filmmakers and such are generally still the same#and itâs just#obviously expecting a lot from indurstires isnât going to get u anywhere (support indie!!!!)#but i wish more ppl were aware and outraged !!!!!!#same with theater in my limited experience#was in a show that had a hugely diverse cast but the crew ? white as fuck#creative team? white. director wasnât but like she didnât do anything so it was delegated to her white producers#and the few poc in the executive producing team were basically demoted and treated like shitttttttttt#so so bad never doing student theater again tho i heard it got better#blayne#delete later

Hey, folks! Prolific independent production company Cotton Candy Flavor Media, LLC. is currently working on its first ever animated film! Itâs called âGet Yeast To Itâ, and itâs a surreal existential dark comedy about a version of the afterlife where humans are judged by cells of yeast based on whether or not they ever ate bread. Weâre currently running a crowdfunding campaign for the project so that we can raise the money we need to achieve our yeasty dreams, which is no small feat for indie artists in the midst of this truly shitty time for the animation industry as a whole. If you all could like, share, and donate to the campaign at the link below, it would go a long way in helping us plucky creators succeedâ and you could have the opportunity to receive an unpackaged potato in the mail, which we know is really tempting for a lot of you. Thanks, everybody, and letâs get bread-y to rumbleeeeeeee!!

everyoneâs always like âthereâs no queer representation in media, i never get to see gay characters on screen so queerbait is all i have :(â and then i go to the âhave you seen this queer filmâ blog and most of you have not heard of a single film out of their massive backlog of posts. so uh. start there
#probably gonna delete this later but#yeah you may have a hard time finding queer rep in mainstream/corporate media#but indie filmmakers have always been working their asses off to represent us#want to be empathetic towards baby gays ofc but at a certain point it feels like weaponized incompetence#or willful ignorance ig. these arenât even all deep cuts guys#hate to break it to you guys but. you need to diversify your media palette. which will sometimes mean going out of your way#or being uncomfortable with something you see#but thatâs how you find the stuff that really speaks with you. youâve gotta put your money where your mouth is and support indie creators#not just whenever one indie project gets lucky and is trending

i feel like iâve been WAITING for the other shoe to drop wrt peopleâs opinions about watcher for this very reason. not that i think the reaction is completely not understandable but the greater the parasocial relationship, the greater the fallout as soon as public opinion shifts. you donât have a relationship with these people theyâre just content creators, chill
#ready to see all the people coming out of the woodwork to say how theyâve never liked watcher/unsolved/etc#and act like itâs âcringeâ now that their fanbase feels âbetrayedâ#itâs great to have a fanbase but parasocial relationships will bite you in the ass every single time#itâs interesting too though because iâve seen watcher have a LOT of support as theyâve tried to build something separate from buzzfeed#so this is the first time theyâre getting real pushback about a decision theyâve made wrt shifting their platform/expanding their brand#so ig weâll have to see how they react moving forward#but itâs soooo interesting to see how enthusiastically people dump on buzzfeed#AND how many people dump on youtube and how over the years so much of its functionality has been stripped away#how many ads you have to sit through. how much sponsored content there is now. etc#but when they try to do the same thing with youtube that they did with buzzfeed itâs like how dare you not lick their boots#because if you lick their boots and we lick their boots we can watch stuff for free#anyway.#even if you donât any to say itâs a bad business decision. itâs not like thereâs not precedent for it#1) the move away from buzzfeed was successful and 2) what about the dnd shows or whatever#donât you guys watch those dnd shows that are âbehind a paywallâ#donât you guys have netflix hulu disney hbo amazon etc ad nauseum that are actually owned by billion dollar corporations#donât you guys get on your high horses about supporting independent artists all the time#itâs interesting that people will profess to be such big fans!!! and feel like theyâre friends!!!!#but how dare they think their work might be worth paying for#idk. idk. itâs entitlement though#sorry for the rant iâm ALSO not trying to blindly defend a bunch of people i donât know#but you guys are being soooo fucking annoying about it lol#anyway iâm still waiting to see what their response is going to be from here before jumping to conclusions#also to be fair i am biased to be lenient about decisions made by independent filmmakers vs big studios etc#like everybody freaking out about the ai art used in late night with the devil. who cares honestly#âthey shouldâve paid a real artist!!â idk maybe their budget didnât cover that#i donât want it to become the industry norm but at the end of the day i would rather see indie shit getting made then only seeing#the big studios (who donât have equitable practices anyway!!) making shit#but thatâs another conversation. just to be transparent about my viewpoint on this kind of thing#maybe controversial but also canât we have nuance. for once.

This is "Power".
Power is a short film that follows a transgender high schooler in rural Arkansas who experiences a sharp social decline after his friends out him as trans to the entire school.
Based on the life experiences of our writer, the story begins with a game of truth or dares between three high school besties; Mack, Kylee, and Elisha. During the game, Mack is dared to reveal their deepest secret.
With this dare, they decide to come out to their friends as trans. After this night, Mack comes to learn how easily shattered friendships can be due to the fears and biases that are targeted toward a minority group.
While the film is addressed to the transgender community, our team strongly believes that the themes associated with the film are universal. The film speaks on social isolation based on the minority status of an individual, social stigmatization towards a minority group, social status, and identity as a minority. With this film, we also seek to speak about social alienation as a product of bigotry.

talked abt the conservative rage against trans people being casted in movies with someone the other day & how they even do this when the actors/characters transness isn't acknowledged in the film/series at all and they were like "i really love when trans identity isn't made into this big thing and it's just treated as a normal way to exist" which like. i understand the sentiment behind and i obviously agree that trans people shouldn't be stuck solely in the very small number of explicitly trans roles but... at this point it doesn't really feel like an acknowledgement of normalcy (when it comes from cis directors), but as a way to not delve even more into the "controversy of transsexuality" and give the image of inclusivity without any of the work
trans people are either portrayed in negative & harmful ways or we are treated as if our transness has no effect on how we move through the world at all and there is hardly any in-between and it's fucking stupid. tbh
#sorry for all the personal posts lately and like no reblogs i only have energy to complain when im online. ive been soo busy#anyway. sometimes it just feels like 'we need more trans ppl in film who arent given a voice!!!' atp honestly lmfao#also they are all side/supporting characters with no real personality or individuality#*this is mostly abt mainstream film largely directed by cis ppl and obviously not abt small indie trans filmmakers

Why do 99% of leftists seem to have never questioned their ideas around ownership?
Which is one of the most basic ideas to challenge and still I see almost everyone spread capitalist rhetoric and propaganda, including high profile/educated people
#like fuuuuuuuck. if something can be replicated and produced without you losing anything it ain't theft#oh no you lost an avenue to sell your shit to. are you aware that avenue shouldn't exist at all because it just makes people like part of a#greater machine built to exploit people? that you shouldn't want to be part of that machine?#stop pretending as if your ability to produce and sell is what justifies your or anyones existence. ok yes you lost that avenue but you#should be able to live even if it didn't exist. you aren't because capitalism sucks. so stop defending the avenue because you're by proxy#defending capitalism. the thing you said you hate and wanna oppose#you can't cling to your own privilege and safety and at the same time try to dismantle capitalism. your privilege is dependent on#capitalisms existence#mainly @ artists#i had to realize writer have the same brainrot painter drawers and like filmmakers and whoever else have#you're not entitled to our money.#if you work for Disney or Netflix I'm gonna become less willing to buy your shit or commission you. probably I'm gonna pirate#no I'm also not going to watch each episode of your show on the day they air instead of waiting until the whole season is released#just because it increases your chances of your streaming service investing in a second season of your shit#(also I don't pay for any streaming services so well) you should've started an indie production if you wanted my support
