In all seriousness this episode's significance to Dean's character as he contrasts with Sam....

Sam is eager to go to a life of hunting monsters. Maybe it's the moral boost, as he justifies. Maybe it's the obsession (a very John-like trait). Maybe it's the demon blood. But he's happy to go back, happy with the monster hunting life. Think of when, in the wishing well episode, Sam admitted that he no longer dreamed of the lawyer life because he loves hunting monsters with his brother.

Dean resists the pull to go back. He doesn't want it. But he's drawn back in anyways. Why? It feels more like fate and duty compared to Sam's sheer desire. Compare Dean in this episode to the end of Season 1, when he wants to give up hunting Yellow Eyes just to keep his family intact.

Dean craves normalcy. That's why his jinn dream was normal life with Mary and Sam. That's why his dream in the other episode is life with the Lisa and the kid. But he never gets the normalcy. His duty is to be his father's soldier. His duty is to protect his brother. His duty is to break the first seal. His duty is to be Michael's vessel. And on and on.

It's really quite tragic that he never gets what he wants

S2 E16 Roadkill - There's a ghost haunting the highway. the Boys help the spirit move on. This is an early example of monster empathy

S2 E18 Hollywood Babylon - Dean loves hollywood. I love dean. this episode makes me kick my feet like a little girl and i will not defend myself.

S2 EP 20 What Was Shall Never Be - all I have in my notes for this one is "Dean Djinn Dream" which was enough for me to remember the episode and get misty eyes. This is SEASON 2 my son will never know peace.

What a scary episode Sam and Dean had desk jobs. We meet a new Angel, Castiel's boss, Zachariah. Who came down it tell Dean that he's a hunter and its what he does no matter what. It was funny to see them take ghost advice from the ghost guys and the camera work? When Zachariah touched Dean it went from bright and colorful to muted and greyish, theirs something to be said about that.

Okay so!

Figure out what you enjoy about Star Wars and go from there. Big themes in SW are good vs evil, mysticism, and action sci-fi. If the stark contrast between good and evil is what pulls you, start with The Original Series (TOS). There's tons of social commentary episodes where they've never even heard words like "subtlety" and "nuance."

If mysticism is your drug... I've not got a lot for you. If it's the super powers of the Jedi then your best bet is probably still TOS. If it's the spirituality/religious nature of the Jedi, watch Deep Space 9 (DS9) and pay special attention to the Bajorans and the Farengi. The Farengi are less obviously religious but once they start world building for their culture you'll see how there's prayer, spiritual leaders, a holy book, and supernatural elements.

If you're looking for action sci-fi, start with the JJ Abrams movies (Star Trek '09, Into Darkness, Beyond), then watch The Next Generation (TNG) Season 3: Episode 15 Yesterday's Enterprise. After that you'll probably be best served going to Voyager (VOY) or Enterprise (ENT).

Now, if you're looking to branch away from Star Wars themes, I'll go over what each series brings to the table and give you some episodes to start with or you can start from the beginning. Every series (except Lower Decks and Discovery) is built around the captain and you can understand a lot of the series elements by knowing what's important about their character.

The Original Series and The Animated Series are both basically the same series just different formats. TAS spends less time with morality and is mostly sci-fi wonder and weird shit that happens. It's campy and fun and over-the-top but not everyone can do the '60s production values. Captain Kirk is a cowboy. Absolute chaotic good and ready to blow shit up when he needs to. Watch: Balance of Terror (S1:E14), Amok Time (S2:E1), Trouble with Tribbles (S2:E15), A Piece of the Action (S2:E17)(one of the most fun Star Trek episodes), Let That Be Your Last Battlefield (S3:E15).

TNG is the most philosophical series. There's some gray area in the morality and Picard spends a lot of time in iconic speeches. Picard is a diplomat. He tries to talk his way out of stuff without violence. Watch: Encounter At Farpoint (S1:E1), Q Who S2:E16), Yesterday's Enterprise (S3:E15), Best of Both Worlds pt 1 and 2 (S3:E26), The Drumhead (S4:E21), and All Good Things... (S7:E25).

DS9 is the most story and character driven of the '90s series. Instead of the ship going and finding weird shit, it takes place on a space station and weird shit comes to it. Sisko is a soldier and the later seasons revolve around a major war between the Federation and the Dominion. This series has the most nuanced moral episodes. Stuff where right and wrong is weighed and judged. Start with: The Emissary (S1:E1), Duet (S1:E13), Past Tense (S3:E12), Homefront (S4:E10), The Visitor (S4:E2), The Magnificent Farengi (S6:E10), Take Me Out to the Holosuite (S7:E4), The Siege of AR-558 (S7:E8), It's only a Paper Moon (S7:E10).

That's enough to get started. Maybe I'll go over Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery, Lower Decks, Picard, and the movies tomorrow. But biggest thing to take away is, if you watch something and hate it, don't assume it's representative of the franchise. Assume there's entire series that are nothing like it.

ok so i admit i am more of a star wars gal than a star trek, but only cause i was raised on sw. but i do want to learn more about star trek, so i ask you, a seemingly knowing knowledgeable fan, what do you recommend to watch to become a star trek fan? like what are the absolute ones i need to watch?

Oh dear anon, I’m so far from being a “knowing knowledgeable” Star Trek fan, like... at all, lol. But okay, I think I can help you. Like I said, I’m not an expert and I haven’t watched all shows yet (only the movies and some of the shows), but I’m gonna try to help you out. So far, I only watched TOS (The Original Series), TAS (The Animated Series), Discovery, Picard (without watching TNG, I’m insane I know lol) and Lower Decks. 

I would recommend starting from the beginning, so start with TOS. That would make or break Star Trek for you. If you love it, go for the other shows. After that, if you don’t wanna start the older shows (who are way longer, which is the reason why I haven’t started them yet), pick one of the new ones: Discovery, Picard or Lower Decks. Pick what you like the most, live action or animated. Discovery is my fav, but Lower Decks is pretty awesome too. 

The movies are a little more complicated, but you can always begin with AOS (Alternate Original Series a.k.a the infamous J.J. Abrams reboot), which was only three movies so far (Beyond is the best one btw 💖). Otherwise, just watch the TOS movies in chronological order (from Star Trek to Star Trek VI), or go crazy go stupid and just watch in whatever order you want.

According to my dear friend @sophiaforevs there’s no particular order to watch the shows (she was kind enough to even make a list of the most “important” episodes for me to watch while skipping the other ones).
