i just got an alert on my phone from Yelp for a new restaurant called Twin Peaks. there was no other real information but the name, and so for one glorious moment i was briefly transported to a pocket dimension where some enterprising human thought that what the people really needed was a literal Lynchian nightmare-scape to go along with their burgers

like maybe all the servers are trained to be just a little uncanny, a little stilted, a little wrong. and also occasionally a mysterious figure dressed in half a modified frog costume runs into the middle of the restaurant floor and screams backwards Latin until the host (a man in a full tux) snaps "mind the fire code, Reginald" while sharpening a large knife

anyway, welcome back to our own dimension because i went ahead and skimmed the reviews and turns out it's just a normal sportsbar where the waitresses wear suggestive outfits.

Something that a lot of GG imitators miss is that there are no mustache-twirling villains. Characters sabotage themselves, parents are overbearing or neglectful but often well-meaning. It’s mundane awfulness that makes the show feel grounded and real!

I saw a tweet talking about how it’s strange that, with Gilmore Girls’ popularity, streaming services haven’t put out more cozy, slice-of-life shows and some people were saying Virgin River is probably the closest modern equivalent and I’m inclined to agree BUT it still features constant crime and medical emergencies. Even Ginny & Georgia (which is a blatant GG ripoff, down to the acronym) leans into the whole murder thing where are the REAL “nothing happens” shows…

things on my miraculous rewatch that i am noticing that are just. funny and help make things make sense in my brain

chloe and alya are both reaaaaally big into superheroes, alya with majestia as we all know and chloe not seeming to have had a favorite until ladybug/replacing her previous favorite entirely with ladybug if she had one, and chloe and sabrina being cosplayers.

it also seems like chloe is really good at making props and pretty passable at video editing, given malediktator and her 'lair' up on the roof/balcony. all of that background props for her little documentary (which is as endearing to me as it is lightly cringe-worthy, i love chloe so so much) were handmade and honestly looked really good, they must have taken aaaaages to make. me and my friend were also noticing that max looked upset during the 'making fun of chloe' scene in malediktator after chloe got hurt by sabrina laughing at her, and we were joking that he was disappointed it got turned off because the editing was good

kim really liked the alec cataldi's show 'alternative truth' in kwamibuster. him liking and looking up to alec cataldi makes so much sense for why his character is the way it is, why he does the dares and the teasing. it's really interesting seeing how the childhood bullying/harassment alec went through shaped his life, and then he in turn continued the cycle on a massive scale to the point where it could be said that he influenced more people to act just like him. i am not even coming into this from a salt perspective, it's entirely just fascinating that in that little bit from a s3 episode we can see part of why he is the way he is

chloe watching the news is such a common experience she's a news girliieeee i love that for herrr

accidentally got a fixation on how the tv studio in universe works. alec cataldi is a catty gay guy who runs a bunch of random slot-filler garbage tv. nadja chamack is a (seemingly single) mother, friend of sabine's, who is the primary news anchor. clara contard is her primary correspondent, who according to the wiki has an unnamed boyfriend/husband (i'm going to go with boyfriend) and unnamed son. obsessed with these three they're so good i love the ~vibes~ of the station crew

all problems in the later few seasons of the show would be lessened greatly if we let Luka Murder Bob Roth!!!

psychomedian should have been a season 2 episode. the plot, the vibes, the marinette characterization. everything besides the flashbacks in the beginning scream earlier actions. also they used flashbacks from the puppeteer 2 in that episode. which makes me confused. so the end lesson for mari in that ep was that adrien isn't good with jokes, and kind of wants to try being more serious because the girl he liked wasn't into funny guys. by using a clip from that episode, and specifically the clip where they're talking from the end of it from that same conversation where he says he doesn't get jokes very well, mari in psychomedian then extrapolates from a single video mention that nino showed adrien that clearly adrien is a huge huge superfan of harry's, and proceeded to hype herself up to try and do a comedy routine that is so specific and embarrassing that i physically couldn't watch that. girl do you even listen to the words from his mouthhh. i would have had less issues with this if that flashback didn't make me go "huh whats that from i've never seen that episode" and paused in the first minute of psychomedian to go watch the puppeter 2, then circled back to psychomedian, and only one of those episodes felt like they deserved to take place in the latter half of the show. on god.

back to the news crew tee em but this retroactively gives a lot of insight to me on how chloe and kim could have been friends and how their friend group was structured before a combination of marinette/ladybug and rampant akumatizations and teenage hormones destroyed the friend group over the course of season one and beginning of season two, but like. chloe and sabrina long term friends with their own particular dynamic and sabrina's crush on chloe. chloe is a news girlie and a superhero fan but keeps her cosplays on the low, only sharing that part of her life with sabrina. kim likes watching tv, specifically the more gossipy/gameshow type things. max is glued to kim's side and is his very close friend, and probably also liked working on nerd stuff with sabrina. alix was probably lumped in because she's athletic and friends with kim, and even if she isn't chloe's biggest fan they can still commiserate about being rich girls together. i know i'm extrapolating and halfway just wishing this was how it was, but it really did feel like that was the it group until they started slowly breaking off and chlobrina got isolated and then chloe got further isolated. in a perfect world this friend group would have stuck together and lila just joined the fold as a baby it girl trying to show off.

Fellow Robert California fans, the "superfan" episodes of The Office season 8 are now streaming on Peacock—slightly longer eps with extended and deleted scenes that didn't make it into the original series!

I haven't been able to watch all of them but I checked out a couple episodes and can confirm there's some extra Spader, like this new interview scene with Robert from 8x01 <3

The more I get *deep* into other continuities like G1 (most people have not watched all of G1 bc it's so long, even tho the most interesting worldbuilding concepts are late S2+S3), Marvel comics, the shortlived IDW2, even Skybound (which doesn't have as much active discussion as you'd think) the less I am satisfied by "continuity soup" and ill-defined, amorphous fanon settings. That isn't to say I'm against mixing details or coming up with original stuff, some of the best fanfics do that, but more that there are genuinely a lot of really interesting concepts that grip the imagination throughout the franchise (esp if you like scifi) that have a TON of transformative potential.

I don't blame anyone for not being a superfan or wanting to delve that deeply into the franchise tho, it's more like a self-inflicted curse because I have so many characters I love and rarepairs that are mainly "rare" because no one has experienced what they're from. Like Octane and Sandstorm are a rarepair (they have 21 tagged fics! <- I say trying not to be greedy), but they aren't a crackship, they had an episode in G1 focusing on them together. I love SkyStar, but it makes me think that if it wasn't for Fire in the Sky being really early Season 1, it wouldn't have gotten as huge as it is today. It's like a flashbang of yaoi for anyone starting their G1 watch journey, whereas by the time you get to the episode Starscream's Ghost you have to be someone dedicated enough to not be scared away by the killing of most of the S1 cast including Oppy, the AKOM animation, the time sink of watching 75 eps if you haven't skipped any..etc. Even tho the idea of a Decepticon getting exiled and then going on a lunch date with an Autobot who tries to protect him from other Decepticons is so slashy!

I have come to the conclusion I must muscle up and start writing myself 🫡 I can only hope that my stuff will be good enough to get ppl invested 🙂‍↕️

Some Severance watchers need to rewatch season 1 is all I'm saying. People are acting like the birthing cabins are brand new, and like the resignation requests are a new thing when both of those were huge plot points in S1.

AND this shit is being spread so much I even bought into some of it. Like people were saying the fact Ricken named his kid after Rebeck was some sort of Lumon tie in, when in reality that's the name of one of his friends. He even says that he wanted to name his kids middle name after Gemma but Mark was uncomfortable with it. They have an entire back and forth about it.

Something I do get cause it was kind of a throw away from the first ep was the eggs from 2x09, in 1x01 they state Mr. Eagan's favorite breakfast is raw eggs. No they don't mention it again until this most recent episode. Plus 3 years went by so I get it, I just didn't have internet today and rewatched all of season 1 and was SHOCKED at how much obvious explanation was packed into that thing.

Idk I guess if you're genuinely trying to give Severance a fair shake and you think it's just doing random shit and going super slow I recommend rewatching season 1, even if you're a superfan, cause let's be honest it's been 3 years we all forgot some of the details and in this show the details matter a hell of a lot.

predictions HOPES AND DREAMS for the new BTVS Hulu sequel:

(i have no sources just my brain for this, this is all speculation. i have zero connection to the show and don't do any professional writing for TV or movies.)

the new show will largely ignore ATS, vampire soul lore (which was already a mess of inconsistencies), and details of BTVS plots.

SMG enters in the second half of ep 1 to explain some lore / hand off the baton metaphorically

SMG also has some good screen time in ep 2, but after that is just in brief scenes. think Do Revenge, or slightly more than Do Revenge.

SMG is not in every ep, but is definitely in the last one.

S1 is only 8 eps and besides a very brief cameo the show is very focused on the new cast (as it should be IMO)

more including my Fuffy incredible hail-mary longshot under the cut

the brief cameo is by Amber (as Tara or someone else) or Michelle (as Dawn). less likely are Emma (as Anya or someone else) or Charisma (as Cordelia or someone else). if people return as their original character (that canonically already died) there is ZERO explanation for it. they are not zombies or vampires or ghosts. it's as if they never died in canon. something something Buffyverse multiverse (which i hear is a thing in the comics)

neither James (Spike) nor David (Angel) make a cameo. [i actually wrote this before David's tweet which seems to imply he is not involved with the show at this time.]

Buffy's personal life (and dating life / relationship status) is not mentioned on the show. think Giles in S1 pre Jenny.

there's a few easter eggs / jokes thrown in for fans of the original cast. the show steers clear of original shipping wars (namely Bangel vs Spuffy).

i'm rooting for a joke about Buffy and cookie dough.

the show is well received. there are rumbles of a better HD remaster for the original BTVS. ratings are good. S2 is announced partway through S1, with 10 eps.

partway through S2 we get a little more about Buffy's personal life. maybe one of the younger Slayers needs some guidance that requires Buffy to share.

there are 2-3 more cameos by original cast.

IF James or David make a cameo they are not de-aged and they are not their original characters. one of those "perhaps in another life" type of appearances. attraction, maybe some lingering looks, but no kissing or anything.

S3 is similar to S2. a few cameos but nothing wild.

Buffy reveals that she is bi sometime in S3. we get a few more glimpses of her personal life.

behind the scenes during S2-S3 there's a push by the showrunners for Eliza to come back as Faith, just for a cameo. she is focused on her new career (PAT therapy work) but very very (VERY) graciously agrees to be a voice on the phone. she could talk just to Buffy or to the younger Slayer(s).

BONUS POINTS if Faith and Buffy have their trademark snarky flirty banter. think S7 vibes. [i will lose my mind for 40s Fuffy]

the voice appearance by Faith is warmly received.

around the same time as the ep with the voice appearance airs, Eliza does a little bit of press. she is promoting PAT (psychedelic assisted therapy) and/or a book and/or her autobiography and/or something else amazing.

a new decent HD remaster for original BTVS is officially planned.

S4 with 10 eps is announced as the last season partway through S3. a spin-off might happen, focused on the new cast. there is a LOT of talk about a movie post S4.

ratings are good, so S4 being the last one is more about studios renegotiating contracts than the show doing poorly.

the show realizes that none of Buffy's canon romantic guys (not gender neutral) from original BTVS make sense for new show Buffy.

(and again, Spike and Angel are not available, for some hand wavy reason in show. IRL it's bc they look too old and de-aging costs too much money for the show budget. and also the show doesn't want to re-ignite the Bangel vs Spuffy shipping wars)

younger Slayer waits in the car / limo / taxi for Buffy, who says she will just "run in and grab it"

Buffy gets to her front door and someone opens it

Faith in relaxed / loungewear opens it. maybe even full on pajamas? [i don't think Faith would ever wear sushi pajamas for the record] the way they smile and talk to each other you KNOW they are sleeping together. chemistry off the charts!

BONUS POINTS if Buffy's jacket opens a little and you see she is wearing a Red Sox shirt. or maybe after she gets back in the car she says it's hot and unzips her jacket and reveals the Red Sox shirt.

MORE BONUS POINTS if Faith seems to be wearing something of Buffy's. like a UC Sunnydale shirt or - if Buffy graduated from college, like University of Cleveland - have Faith wear that. or have it be on her coffee mug.

Supernatural Liveblog - S.5 Ep.05 - Fallen Idols

Trying to get back into watching SPN because I took a break from it. This episode seems interesting. A good way to get back into it. Plus last episode Sam and Dean reunited, which makes me happy. I hated them being apart.

I'm curious if Anna or Castiel will be in this episode at all, considering the episode name. Anyway. Let's go.

Brothers may be together, but tensions are still high... "We need training wheels" fuck you honestly. Sam's nicer than me, I would have popped him.

I like them bringing this element of Supernatural back. It's what made me like the series when I started. Not the angels and the demons, the focusing on actual myths, urban legends, and folklore. This case in particular is pretty interesting, with the actual history of the car.

I love the way Dean talks to cars, he's so silly.

Sam jumpscare, love it.

This is genuinely the most scared I've seen Dean in almost the whole show, and it feels so fitting that it involves a car.

I take back what I said before about this episode, and now I don't know how to feel.

"Two super famous super pissed off ghosts killing their superfans?" well I guess you could say that's pretty... supernatural. Sorry. I'll go home.

"Yeah well we all know who's fault that is." This doesn't seem right. I can't see Dean actually saying that. What the fuck. There's something else here. Something shady.

Honestly fuck Dean this episode, he's pissing me the hell off. Kudos to Sam for being a better person than me.

I love the moments this show utilizes more silence. Silence is so powerful in sound design, especially in more horror type media, and I love when it's used.

Also, I didn't mention it when it was said, but Sam's comment about Dean never being able to punish him like he was punishing himself hit me so, so hard.

Don't get me wrong with my going off about the way Dean is acting; I understand and I don't fully blame him. It just upsets me, and I don't like seeing it. I know if I were in Sam's position too, I would not be taking it on the chest like he is.

Oh gosh the call out on Dean's daddy issues, was not expecting that this episode but I'm not opposed.

I'm also not opposed to the discussion of religion and modern day celebrity idolatry.
