SEE: Psych-Rock | Holy Wave - āNothing In The Darkā + Live Dates
Holy Wave have just released their jangly, haunting new psychedelic track āNothing In The Darkā and this is an incredible follow-up to āBog Songā. The band has a knack for producing catchy and melodic tracks that stay true to their psychedelic brand. The band is true to their brand and thoughtful in their compositions. FEELS: warm and tingly SOUNDS: like Bob Dylan and Tame Impala had a child SEE: āNothing In The Darkā Read More: On the track, band member, Cook offers: "Nothing in the Dark is about how easy it is to let fear take over and control what you do and donāt do, how distractions can keep you from the things you want or disguise themselves as what you want. But when the light disappears from your life, like shadows, the distractions fade away, and youāre left with just yourself and the darkness. So I guess the song is about moving past the fear of the shadows; you can see in the light so that you donāt end up sitting alone in the dark." On the video, band member, Fuson offers: "We all acted in the video, but we also did the set design and all the props. Since it was a super small budget, we had to wear a bunch of hats to afford to pay the people who were good at their jobs, haha. The director Vanessa Pla also made some mean carnitas for the crew. They were fire." my ideal morning routine: (if i write it down everywhere maybe itāll stick in my mind)
1. drink a glass of water ! (then fill up big water bottle to sip throughout the day)
2. drink coffee if you choose but only after drinking water first :)
3. follow a calming, stretching morning meditation/yoga video to ground myself š§š¼āāļø
4. do some at home arms, butt, core workouts (follow list i created)
5. shower, moisture face, apply sunscreen, floss, brush, whiten, rebrush, mouthwash, chapstick
6. apply mascara, whatever makeup i like, and do hair
7. have time for myself to RELAX, sip water - listen to music, read a book, sit outside if the weathers nice, or whatever i choose to do :)
i think if i start doing this everyday i will feel a lot better about myself, and my body will thank me. itās not easy to have a routine like this & it can be easy to forget to take care of yourself fr. before i begin a job, i would like to have this routine set. and continue it for when i start working everyday - waking up early and going to bed early is also super important. š«§š
also: if you have people in your life who consistently stress you out, belittle you, and put you down itās actually 100% okay to not engage with them and put up with their bs

hi! may i request hcs of the haikyuu boys watching/helping their significant other workout? maybe yoga or just a regular workout? would be sweet if it was all of them but i know there are so many, so mainly kuroo, kageyama, bokuto, oikawa and nishinoya <3 thank you!!
hi anon!! iām sorry i didnāt do all the boys, but i wrote for the specific boys you requested. if you, or anybody else, wants these hcās for other boys iād love to do them hehe. hope you enjoy!
kuroo tetsurÅ
heās so excited as soon as youāre like āhey wanna work out togetherā
like his whole body freezes up and then he just
screams
if youāre already like pretty athletic, he makes everything a competition
but doesnāt actually compete
he just wants to watch you š
no fr heāll be like āi bet i can do more squats than youā
and then just doesnt squat and only watches you squat
this mf š
he gets way too excited and puts an alarm at 4;30 am to text you/wake you up to go on a run with him
you: see thatās what weāre not gonna do
if youāre not very athletic or youāre just starting to get accustomed to working out
he is so. encouraging
like sickeningly so
tries his best not to overwhelm you and does really basic workouts with you
but also if ur laying face down on the ground crying āi dont wanna do this anymoreā he will NOT have any of it
good luck unsubscribing to his services
he just wants to see you succeed š„ŗ šš¼šš¼
cooks you the best healthy meals you dont even feel like youre missing out on anything
now
yoga
listen heās so cheeky
heās so mf TOUCHY
couples yoga with kuroo >>>>
itās so funny bc this man is so strong he can do pretty much any move that requires any type of strength but pull out the flexibility card and he will pass away on the spot
he also just likes to watch you do yoga
not just bc heās a pervert
but also bc itās just interesting to see you in your zone
buys you yoga pants just bc <3333
āu just wanna stare at my assā
āhow dare you i would never objectify my gfā
stares at your ass <3
kageyama tobio
remember when i said kuroo would make everything a competition but wouldnāt really care
kageyama cares
heās so annoying youre just trynna have fun working out w ur bf but here he is trynna kill u bc heās so much better at everything
okay but if YOURE better š¤
it pisses him off at first but then he realizes heās pissed off bc ur so hot and make his spine tingle
work outs with him are intense as fuck
like he goes all out
but then he helps you stretch and š itās worth it
if heās helping you workout, heās kinda harsher than he intends to be
and when he realizes that yk maybe heās being a lil extra
he apologizes and just asks how you wanna do it
spends the night researching heheĀ
is encouraging in a demeaning way like ādo you WANT to regret not working harderā ur like tobio i swear on my life i will start crying
when yāall are done he does like give u a small kiss and the sweetest smile āgood workā and it makes it all the more worth it
about yoga though
when he first watched u he was horny hwbwjwks
he was like oop what is this feeling
but then it clicked lmao
avoids watching you unless youāre doing it privately so he can embarrass himself less
if you invite him to join you itās just rigorous head shaking but he loves you sm heāll do anything for you
he just follows your lead and is listening so attentively and is trying to mimic your movements exactly and is so awe oh my god heās so CUTE
once ur done and ur both just laying on the ground you roll over and kind lean over him and give him a kiss āthank u for doing this with meā
āwe should do it more oftenā
not horny just in love with you <3
bokuto kÅtarÅ
so hyperactive good luck keeping up with him
heās also like
built
LIKE HAVE YOU SEEN. HIM???? no way he doesnt go crazy w the work outs
if you suggest to work out together heās so excited and he just does everything normally the way he does at 2.5x speed and youāre just like bruh š§š»āāļø slow down
you do eventually find your own rhythm that kinda matches his own
and itās nice to have him with you because like if youāre at a gym and ur using a device across the room from him heāll just yell and wave at you and blow you a kiss god i love this dork
after youāre both spent you just sit on the ground across from each other stretching just talking just vibing
gives you a big smooch in between everything if he can
it becomes a really positive addition to your life ngl
if heās helping you work out
he is actually the fkn BEST
despite him being a work out freak, he doesnāt force that on you in any way
if anything i think heād be super gentle
so cheerful when encouraging you
and rewards you a lot
too much probably
ā20 PUSHUPS BABE !!!! LETS GO MAKE OUT FOR 20 MINUTESā
he doesnāt just say it he really does mean it when he tells you heās proud of you
loves it when you do yoga
immediately tries to join in
āoouu teach me this moveā proceeds to fall on his ass <3
Ā tās okay he has a lotta cushioning š
he always wants to try the couples yoga moves
he saves them on his phone to show you later and you cant say no bc ur already in gear and the yoga mat is on the ground hehe
(if you watch cody ko and kelsey kreppelās couples yoga video thatās basically how it goes with you two)
^^^ in one of the moves he has to like lift you up by your arms as youre sitting down and heās standing and he accidentally just shoves your face into his crotch
you both couldnāt stop laughing until you nearly peed and thats the beauty of love
oikawa tÅru
he has to repeatedly ask you if youāre s u r e you wanna work out with himĀ
if youāre s u r e you can keep up
please hand his cocky ass to him <3Ā
if youāre athletic, prepare to have him try to one up you every time you do somethingĀ
itās so sweet though cause heās so determined and heās sticking his tongue out between his lips and youāre just like baby please what is thisĀ
tells you to lay beneath him while he does push ups so he can kiss youĀ
you complain about how sweaty he is but really you just want him to take his shirt off <3Ā
okay two important things i want to go over
one. oikawa does not know when to stop. so, honestly, you probably suggested to work out with him to keep him in check and make sure he doesnāt overwork himselfĀ
please make him drink water and take breaks when necessary :(Ā
two. his knee :( he would probably need to be very careful and heāll teach you the correct way to massage it and prep it before he does any critical workĀ
if you approach him one day about helping you work out cause youāre clueless ā yes it will get to his head
but like ??? heās your boyfriend??? your very athletic boyfriend???Ā
who else would u ask tf š¹
anyways he makes a whole like list and shit
organizes it so well with color coding and different handwritingĀ
keeps you up to date with your progress and always says things like ālook how well youāre doing babe!ā and gives you a hugeeee hugĀ
now, oikawa is either weirdly flexible, or not flexible at all
weāre gonna go for the first one for this yoga hcĀ
joins you randomly and starts doing the poses correctly right away ur like ??? sir ???Ā
distracts you. so much.Ā
ācan i have a kissā another one?ā one moreā one more babeā okay anāāĀ
make out sessions ensued :)
nishinoya yū
actually i think noya would like to be in own zone kinda thing when heās working out
probably blasting some katy perry in his ears nglĀ
but when you tell him you wanna go work out with him??Ā
now youāre both blasting katy perry in your earsĀ
stares. stares so much. provocatively.Ā
heās your bf so you get it
but women have come up to you in the gym asking if youāre okay hbwjwkwe
makes you try out his routine while he tries out yoursĀ
āwow babe this is sooo easyā heās dying dont believe him
you guys probably have a handshake thatās so motivating to do before and after eeekkkk he probably makes you feel SO good about yourself after
takes you to eat the unhealthiest shit he can find after a workout because why not right ? chivalry? undead š»
if you ask him for help heāll accept right away
competes with you to help you improveĀ
āone day babe youāll be beating me at these with such easeāĀ
heās the loud kind of encouragingĀ
yells a lot
like so muchĀ
body worship all the time <3333
āgod u look SO good right now i love you so muchāĀ
this simp i love him sm
anyways. onto yogaĀ
did i mention he stares šš
because he doesĀ
he already knows you do yoga and he will find out your scheduleĀ
just. likes to watch you tbhĀ
if you offer to do couples yoga with him he refuses bc he likes the view where he is lmfaoĀ
there are so many tiktoks of him just doing the dances while you calmly do yogaĀ
it becomes a trend lmfaowjwnsj
anyways yes best supportive bf award goes to noya (actually all of them who am i kidding)
end note; MY BEST FRIEND PAINTED AKAASHI FOR MY BDAY GIFT I STOPPED BREATHING ,,, anyways i hope yāall enjoyed this!! feel free to request some more mwah

thoughts on the musicals yāall recommended!
tysm for all the recs! i had so much fun listening to them, i really appreciate it! always feel free to rec more :)Ā Ā
to preface, thereās no actual judging system. itās all about the vibes. so, in the order that i listened to them:Ā
the mad ones
i already made a post abt this one, but i have to mention it again. iāve been listening to it on repeat. like. straight up on a loop.Ā
iām obsessed with this
the storyline is so put together, and you can really feel the heart of the show
the characters were well written (with the exception of the boyfriend tbh, i could have done without him), and iām so fascinated by sam and kellyās relationship (writers were cowards for making them not gay)Ā
the songs felt super cohesive, and the repeated drum loop was super well integrated. the sound techie in me is fascinated by the way this show was put together, and iād love to see it performed (like. fr. i was getting ideas for the design. which is always so much fun)Ā
19.75/10
romeo es julia
holy shit this slaps
costumes were weird
but the music was brilliant
some of the captioned lyrics were ???? bad translation or bad lyrics??? but the sound was incredible so i donāt even careĀ
mercutio and tybalt were spot on
the moms were GREAT. i LOVED their voices, like. could FEEL the emotions, even if i didnāt know wtf they were sayingĀ
pretty much everyone was like that, like idk whatās going on via words, but i def can feel it, which is the best kind of song
my mother didnāt like this one but whatever, she didnāt get to see the choreo that went with it so what does she knowĀ
the SET. the LIGHTS. the SOUND. the SET. theĀ LIGHTS. the SOUND. chefās kiss.Ā
14/10Ā
ordinary days
eh
i liked āfavorite placesā andĀ ābeautifulā a lot, but the rest of the songs were only okay
i wasnāt super attached to the characters and the singing was just. like. okay for me. i didnāt love any of them in particularĀ
my mother also didnāt like this one, rip. she has a lot of opinions on musicals.Ā
6/10
venice
oh my fucking god????????Ā
not what i expected at all. right from the first lines i was like.Ā š²š²š²Ā
like. this was so good??? wtf???? hamilton meets shakespeare meets the mechanisms meets les mis meets post-9/11 politics meets dystopia. i thought it couldnāt be done, but here i am, in awe
i was going to include some favorite lines but. itās just all of them. ALL of them.Ā
further confirmation that iām in love with jennifer damiano.Ā
also angela polk?? incredibleĀ
itās weird bc itās so clearly Not Broadway Music, but itās also not trying to be, which i enjoy. i can see why some critics hated it (read some really funny reviews lmao), but i really loved the sound (havenāt seen the show, though, and thatās half of a musical, so maybe gonna try and find a bootleg)Ā
18.99/10
count of monte cristoĀ
damn from the overture this was. Intense. like. damn. iām a slut for any dies irae sequence, so i was a big fan of that
that being said. gonna be real. i had no idea what was happening throughout the entire musical. itās a pretty music-light show, so thatās probably why?Ā
maybe it would make more sense if i watched a performance rather than just listening to the soundtrack??? idk. anyone got a bootleg?Ā
thomas borchert has a nice voice. very distinctive. googled him to see where else i can listen to him. he was rum tum tugger. anyways. mad respect for this man
sonically, it didnāt feel like a very cohesive show? like it felt like there were a lot of diff vibes going around
lots of good songs for my evil musicals playlist thoughĀ
11/10Ā
once on this island (2017 revival)
ok turns out musicals are a lot better when sung by professionals than by sixth graders who think they can belt even tho their voices are still crackingĀ
also turns out that stories can be much more complex and interesting-- and have much deeper themes of racism and classism-- when on broadway than when in a sweaty middle school auditorium in an upper middle class white neighborhoodĀ
funny how that works, huhĀ
iām still a little unsure abt it, and probably wouldnāt listen to it just because i can, but i definitely donāt object to it anymoreĀ
ty for making me give it a second tryĀ
hailey kilgore is brilliant in this
the singing in general is REALLY impressive and beautifulĀ
12.68/10Ā
death note
i cannot express enough in words how mad i am that i actually liked this
genuinely donāt know how to feelĀ
i do think that i would get more out of it if i watched the anime, but it was still pretty easy to follow, just knowing the premiseĀ
idk who the cast is bc i found a weird shady playlist on spotify rather than a cast recording, but the girlās voice (idk character names) was beautiful.Ā āiāll only love you moreā was SO good
reminded me a little of jekyll and hyde? which? huh
also iām now getting tik tok videos with audio from this musical can my iphone stop stalking me for ONE second
fucking unfair that this is actually a good soundtrack. the desire to find a bootleg is unholy.Ā
14.87/10Ā
35mm
why did no one tell me that alex brightman is in this!!!!
i listened to a few songs and really enjoyed them, but didn't get through the whole album lmao
but i did really enjoy what i did listen to, and i'm gonna come back to it
9/10
ghost quartet
i wanted to like this one. SO badly. i REALLY wanted to like it.
but i couldn't really get into it?Ā
there were a few songs that absolutely slapped, but overall, it was just kinda. eh. which sucks bc i have heard such good things about it
i LOVED "the astronomer," "the telescope," and "lights out"Ā
but i didn't get through the entire album
i'll come back to it eventually and give it another try, i think. i might just not have been in the specific mood for it
9.8/10
#ty again!#i always appreciate recs#the mad ones#romeo es julia#35mm#venice#count of monte cristo#ghost quartet#death note musical#once on this island#elektra#ordinary days

7/16/2021 - other stuff:
I started translating the simplified print version of Guardian that has additional scenes! I am not sharing it yet, but may in the future at some point. (Notes for future reference: taking a picture in good light with the page flat, depending on if needed upping contrast so its darker/lighter in photos, then opening in OCR in Pleco works pretty well at converting the text to digital so I can make notes and edit and look up words more easily. Also so far 1 page takes 1 hour to translate roughly so keep that in mind ToT).
I am yet again tempted to to a full on Listening Reading Method ātest run.ā By that I mean: picking a novel, (step 1) reading in english, (step 2) reading in chinese with chinese audio (repeating as needed), (step 3) reading in english with chinese audio (repeating as needed), (step 4) listening to audio only. Yes Iām still debating if Iād do step 3, then step 2 - since I tend to flip which I do first depending on the day. Also debating if I āprepā first by listening only (I could call it step 0). Also still debating if Iād do instead: step 0 listen only, step 1, step 2, step 3, ~step 2 again~, step 4 listen only. Basically I did tiny tests with The Little Prince, and Iāve done 20 chapters of Guardian so far (which did help) but Guardian is so long I end up varying how I do it each day into whatever way gets me TO do it and Guardian is so long it will be months until I know what ācompleting a bookā is like for the process. The original forum creator of L-R Method would do like 3-6 hour books or like 10 hour books. Guardian is... much longer. Also, if I pick a book both harder than The Little Prince (so thereās more vocab to learn) and easier than Guardian (so I can get to a natural listening stage faster) I wonder how much progress Iād make. Right now books I am considering for a ātest methodā run are: Harry Potter 1 (simply because someone made parallel text with audiobook videos already so it is super convenient to do L-R Method, also the book has Ā 2600 unique characters and 7700 unique words so I would likely reinforce my hanzi knowledge and learn maybe a couple hundred more, and likely increase my vocabulary by several hundred to a couple thousand depending on how much I focus, Iām fairly sure I can blow through it quickly the only limiting factor is like The Little Prince I am not sure if the reading level is low enough that I may not pick up significant amounts of new words compared to how many I pick up from Guardian - https://youtu.be/NLu0JW6VtGM). Sherlock Holmes - The Hound of Baskervilles (the book is 7.5 hours so not nearly as long as Guardian, I could probably L-R Method it in 2 weeks, the novel is written for adults and a mystery genre so genre-words I may find more useful to me while also probably having a bigger vocabulary than The Little Prince, Ā P74 å·“ęÆå
ē»“å°ēēē¬ 01 audiobook - https://youtu.be/hDKfUjienKA, full playlist of the sherlock audiobooks - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1QFMgv0n_Y&list=PLVyDH2ns1F757P-m8MHckuIFqWapl6y-1, and bilinguis.com has a parallel text which I am checking if it matches the audiobook - http://bilinguis.com/book/baskerville/zh/en/c1/). Bonus, just one day Iād love to test it with Alice in Wonderland in French since bilinguis.com has an audiobook and parallel text - http://bilinguis.com/book/alice/fr/en/c3/. Or Le Francais Par Le Methode Nature, since that also now has audio and text and one day Iād like to finish reading it - https://youtu.be/0uS5WSeH8iM.
Fun fact: I am listening to P74 å·“ęÆå
ē»“å°ēēē¬ 01 (byĀ ē„čÆę¹åå½čæĀ ) in the background right now and the first thing I hear isĀ āqinai watsonā my dear watson ok. ok sherlock i see you. ToT. Aside from that I just keep hearing random words I know. If you plan to listen to a chinese sherlock audiobook though - I do recommend this playlist. Iāve found a few sherlock audiobooks and for some the audio is very rough like it was recorded from the radio, whereas this one is fairly clear and the reader speaks very clearly, and has a rhythm to sentences (which for me personally helps me listen easier and parse out words). So if you know some words they are much easier to hear, and if you are looking at the parallel text I linked on bilinguis it is quite easy to follow along.Ā
I really want to get into the habit of some extensive reading with audiobooks (as in reading while listening) just because it speeds up my reading, and I pick up some words in reading while practicing listening. Its also somewhat doable, whereas just listening I may often get lost unless I know the material well. Last night I read chapter 1 of MoDu while playing the audiobook and following along - obviously I did not read as in depth as if Iād have done L-R Method and looked up all unknown words with pop-up english. But combined listening comprehension and reading comprehension I understood ENOUGH to follow the plot and keep reading, at a faster pace than if I only was extensively reading and at a much better comprehension than if I only listen. (My listening comprehension is a bit better if Iāve read the text beforehand, but thatās sort of artificial since i prepped by reading the text beforehand). Yes, I learn new hanzi better with slower extended reading where I have time to really slow down and look at the new hanzi a lot. But Iād like to aim for quantity of materials read for a while? Iād if simply reading more will help, but a lot of the general advice seems to be the more extensive reading you do where you can follow the main points the more you will improve. And hey, maybe that applies to simplyĀ ālistening a lot moreā too?
A lot of articles Iāve found recently emphasize repeated listening, and I want to try to include that more in how I study. While I might not do it as intensively as some articles suggest, I can definitely continue to do it in Clozemaster and continue playing audiobooks of chapters Iāve read already (so I can follow the audio ok) in my downtime. A LOT of my chinese study lately has not been active, its been mostly justĀ āplaying audio in the background.ā So since Iām not studying actively much, I might as well try to get in more listening.
I checked out the cdrama Forward Forever recently and opinions: if you understand basic chinese JUST watch it in chinese because wow are the english subs a hot mess ToT. I tried watching with subs and there were so many clearĀ āwrongā portions I just had to turn them off, they were made from google translate though so Iām not super surprised (but Xin Xiao Shi Yi Lang has much more decent auto-generated subs so ToT). Iām not sure if Iāll watch more or not, but I can definitely tell it was adapted from a BL source material with the way the main two guys are immediately set up as characters and then meet. I also want to check out Secret of the Three Kingdoms but Iāve seen like 3 minutes and I already am pretty aware Iāll probably like the show so much that Iāll want to put the english subs on for clarity. Secret of the Three Kingdoms feels Very well made.
If I was gonna try to summarize what my study plan has been this month:Ā - Listen-Reading Method Guardian (its going fine), with some experiments on the structure of the activity - translate some of Guardian (not really study as Iām pretty familiar w the chapters so just rereading things, mainly its translating practice) - Doing a few random things in japanese: read Guardian in japanese, play japanese video games a little bit, watch japanese-teaching video game example vids a bit (basically more tiny bits of japanese Iād add up to idk under 6 hours? just me glancing at things) - Reading this japanese grammar guide (Iām 1/3 through) -Ā https://sakubi.neocities.org/ - Listen to various chinese audiobooks, with and without text. - Read various chinese chapters, with and without audio. - Listen/Read a bit of French, in Gigafrench (i truly mean a bit like a couple hours), Dracula (just listening) - some Clozemaster japanese, and a tiny bit of Clozemaster chinese (mainly to pick up stuff in japanese, and practice shadowing in both) So - some random chinese stuff reading/listening/L-R Method, some japanese exposure/grammar guide/clozemaster, a tiny bit of French (mainly listening practice).Ā
#july#july progress#we'll see if i actually do any 'test method' things lol#but i do like this sherlock audiobook the audio is very easy to listen to#i love mo du but it drives me !!! that the audiobook just randomly skips sentences and paragraphs and idk why#mainly i am just continuing L-R Method as my 'heavy study' because its working quite well tbh#i dont do it as fast as the creator of it suggested. but i do it. and it allows me to read Guardian which is something i enjoy#also as u can tell i've been trying to include more audio into my study - the more i include it the more i realize how much at least persona#lly my brain seems to remember things better with audio. particularly i've been testing it with Closemaster-japanese#and WOW does doing a listening focus improve my memory of words/comprehension of them#it helps too that my reading-guess abilities in japanese are relatively useful. so listening-focus when i study helps build up#the weaker areas i have in japanese - since i can vaguely follow writing but cannot understand pronunciations#chinese is. really peculiar to me from a learning perspective? i am picking up hanzi and words-sound wise but not necessarily at the same ti#time. like i'll remember one but then it takes a while for the other. depending on the word.#i do remember hanzi quite well though - their pronunciation takes a while. but their 'vague overall meaning' i remember after just a few#times of seeing them. i think its a combo of i learn well from context and compound words and radicals make a lot of sense to me#so like. reading in chinese i pick up faster overall in at least a vaguely-understood way. but listening wise its a bit different. again tho#for me hanzi are a ton easier than kanji. for me once i learn a hanzi i jave a pretty solid 'sound' it makes in my head#(so the only issue is temporarily before i fully associate its 'real' pronunciation. my mind has an approximate-guessed pronunciation#which is a temporary issue). but anyway so once i mostly-learned a hanzi. if i see it i can hear it in my head#(in fact i NEED to hear words in my head or its harder to learn them. idk why. my mind will make UP a pronunciation if i dont know one lol)#so like. kanji are SO much harder because i will see them and immediately either hear: the chinese pronunciation. or one of the few japanese#readings for that kanji i know (which may not be correct). and it results in a lot of wrongly-connected sounds to japanese kanji for a while#which is a bigger concern for me in japanese. (whereas in chinese i know its a matter of quickly looking up the hanzi#pronunciation and then i can correct the mistake ANY time i see the hanzi again#and my 'guess' pronunciation sometimes was close already since i have radicals to help guess)#whereas with japanese kanji. one guess may have very little to do with a new words pronunciation. so it leads to me accidentally connecting#wrong-pronunciations to a lot of words i can read but cant hear. and then mistakenly keep reinforcing the wrong-pronunciation in my head for#much longer...

Hey! Are you currently in uni/ college? Iām just looking for any kind of motivation during all of this happening š
š„ŗ
hello! yes !! i am currently in my last year of college (though the school system works a bit differently than most where i live)! i TOTALLY feel u! this year was āsupposed to beā THE GRIND for me! i was gonna study super hard, work crazy hours and apply for a visa to go move out to live in NYC next year! now, without knowing if any of that is possible (and honestly: not knowing if thatās even what i want anymore??) iām lacking such motivation. on top of that, i 100% recognize that iām in such a fortunate and comfortable position at this time and that people are struggling much much worse! this should motivate me but somehow makes going to school online feel even stupider!! itās honestly making me question the trajectory i want my life to take because why am i here if not to help people??? but many of the seemingly practical ways to help people are through corrupt systems in which i want no part?? CONFUSING. for now iām dedicated to putting what i can in mutual aid funds & highlyyy recommend that if you even have $5 to pop in every now and then that you do. this feels like the future. IN ANY CASE. motivation for studying online (iām assuming this is the sitch). it can be tricky. my tips are probably the most basic ones youāve seen over and over but here goes:
MAKE YOURSELF A REGULAR SCHEDULE. set a wake-up alarm for the same time every day. if you find it hard to not just hit snooze, get ur early bird friend to call u up in the morning and chat to u as they get ready until u can secure the caffeine. š but fr, alarms are ur best friend. u can use them to schedule in break time, work periods... and u can use your agenda to mark down days off, due dates, etc. try to estimate how long each project/reading will take you and allot specific times of the day for it. really try to hold yourself accountable! or find a friend to check in on your progress!
GET READY EVERY MORNING. you probably donāt feel as motivated to work in your pyjamas. put on clothes youād go to a job interview in. doll yourself up if you need to! youāll feel so much more prepared to work!! (+ if you wear slightly uncomfortable things like jeans, if youāre like me, youāre much less likely to laze around)!
WORK ANYWHERE BUT YOUR BED. set up your station at a desk, your kitchen table, your kitchen counter or in even in a bathtub!! literally ANYWHERE but your bed or a couch. separate your work space and rest space as much as you can. i know this is not always easy (personally, my desk is not even a meter away from my bed and theyāre against opposing walls... but do your best!)
MAKE TIME TO BE SOCIAL. you donāt have to go out to a pandemic party in your spare time, but taking a minute to facetime your friend or go chat to your sister or literally have a conversation with the person at the post office (u.s. pals pls support the USPS if u can) will help your mood and motivation immensely. study in silence over facetime with friends. take 3 seconds to scroll through the meme group chat that youāre part of. itās about the little things š
BE ACTIVE. you donāt have to run a marathon, or even follow a chloe ting ab workout (although 10/10 would recommend i actually love that workout!). if you just take 40 seconds to do some jumping jacks in between classes or while the teacher is lecturing and you cannoootttttt sit still anymore, this can boost your mood! it can help you be able to concentrate better and also helps your blood circulation (every 20 mins you should get up and walk around for a bit ideally)!
KEEP YOUR STATION TIDY. donāt clutter your space with things if you can avoid it. computer, headphones, notepad, literary texts/textbook, paper, pencil, eraser, sharpener, pen, whiteout. BOOM. done. thatās it. (well, maybe except for coffee/water/tea, which, btw, iād recommend keeping in a bottle or thermos that you can lock so that u can avoid frying your technology!!) everything else can be stowed away somewhere and pulled out when needed. if youāre in art school or some other program where things can get messy, create a system that makes all your materials accessible but not immediately in the way. (also, as someone with a very tiny space, iām here to tell u there is ALWAYS a way to do this!!! & itās ok to ask for help!!! if your space is not conducive for work? borrow a few screws and a screwdriver or a nail and hammer from ur neighbor! get a lil plank of wood from the store or the side of the road or someone you know and bang a shelf into your wall! or grab moving boxes from a buddy and stack em in your corner to make a storage space! thereās always a way.)
USE. AN. AGENDA. i think i already touched on this one but HONEY if u donāt have an agenda or a calendar WHAT ArE You DoInG???? once, i didnāt have enough money to buy one, so i literally paid 2$ for colourful construction paper at the dollar store, drew the dates in and stapled one together. there is not really any excuse to not have one! you can use the back pages of your unfinished third grade math notebook! it doesnāt matter! you just need a space to write things down because this is probably one of THE most essential tools for staying motivated (writing down ur goals) and staying on track (writing in due dates, etc.)!! u can watch cute bullet journal videos and fill it with stickers if that motivates u! or do what i did this year and buy one thatās way expensive so that u feel bad about how much money u spent and therefore HAVE to use it š whatever works for u!
JOURNAL. this may sound kind of irrelevant, but i found that i was SO much more motivated to go to online school when i had a space to just let out all my negative emotions towards it. in my journal, i would dump out all my feelings of disdain towards doing theatre school online and missing my friends...so then when it actually came to school, i was pretty much over it and was just excited to see them and my teachers (even tho it was just virtually!)
maybe u werenāt asking for advice lol but i felt like going OFF!! š if anyone has tips for motivation/success at online school in this wild global pandemic era weāre living in reblog and add em! we can make this a cute little chain!! hope youāre all taking care! i believe in u and u r going to do AMAZING this school year i feel it āØš

Great post op, you literally articulated these points so well, and itās kinda brave these days to say these things bc the white Wiccans get maddddd asf. Iād like to add a few if thatās ok!
The use of the word āmagickā instead of āmagicā. A lot of people really donāt know this one so itās easy to mess up, but it has very very problematic roots, and the justification for using it in the modern day is flimsy at best. It usually at least indicates lack of research on magical terms, but most will find its most popularly used in white witch spaces, and neopagan spaces in general.
Going back to your point about closed practices, specifically what you said about closed plants. Some ppl donāt know this but thereās actually closed animals as well! There just tends to be more laws around them because people care more about animals than indigenous people. Itās to the point that in most places, itās illegal to own certain feathers unless you are in a federally recognized tribe with special permissions to handle those animals for cultural reasons, and you could be charged a hefty fine, or even jailed. As an indigenous person, I believe this should be the same or similar around endangered sacred plants, such as white sage or other widely poached sacred plants. I only say this because Iāve literally had white witches gift me illegal feathers, which Iāve had to properly (discreetly) get rid of!
Anyone practicing Wicca at all is a red flag. The fundamentals of that religion directly come from both stolen closed practices, and āoccultifiedā catholicism. Down to the deity figureheads they worship (the trinity and consort), to the ātraditionalā practices, to the rede itself. It was made by a crazy white occultist man, along with some other non-credible consultants and spread like shit on a windshield wiper. This isnāt to say that people who practice Wicca are inherently bad people or anything, but that people who do, have a lot of decolonizing and unpacking to do, and I encourage them to educate themselves and consider another less harmful route. Because the more you learn about Wicca, the less appealing it becomes to people with good intentions.
You mentioned the threefold law, and that just made me wanna bring up a similar point. There are certain cultural and religious terms like karma, spirit animal, chakras, chi, smudge, chalice, etc that come from non-occult practices, cultures, and religions, and people need to respect that, and stop watering them down fr. Itās a red flag when people use them, because it shows theyāre either very uneducated, or in the worst cases, willfully ignorant or malicious with it.
Iām gonna actually jump right back up to your first point and expand on that one too. People get it twisted with black and white magic, because they think itās as simple as good and bad like the media makes it. In reality, any concept of good vs evil, black and white, and even a grey area are inherently cultural, and have hyperspecific historical and cultural contexts that get left out when itās all simplified into black, white, and grey. And it plays into that looming colonialism that still plagues spiritual communities, overshadowing it with these mainstream Abrahamic ideals. Black white, good and evil have always existed, but if one wants to believe in those kinds of things, I think they should look into which cultural specifics they actually follow. Itās more truthful and informed that way, and lets you be more understanding when it comes to disagreements.
Adding a controversial point of my own: neopaganism/new age spirituality isnāt good. Like at all. And itās not the same as modernizing practices, or coming up with new techniques that actually work. Iām talking like, the idea that wisdom and knowledge can be cultureless, default, or easily accessible in a quick, simple format like a video or post. When you become someone who practices magic, you immediately sign yourself up to be a historian. Like, a super nerd. And you set yourself up to be a scholar as well. You are signing up to humble yourself, seek out verified truth, and deal with realities such as colonization, practices lost to time and genocide, the corrupt historian and archeologist fields full of biased white cishet men, etc. Neopaganism and new age spirituality in general, at their roots, are just tools to water down, capitalize off of, and exploit culture. Yes, Iām talking about European cultures too. All of those practices came from somewhere, and those somewheres are often demonized minority communities who went through a genocide at one time or another. Acknowledging it and unpacking it is the first step to being a powerful, knowledgeable witch. Look into EVERYTHING, down the the terms you use for a tool or practice.
Red Flags In Pagan Circles
I've seen a lot of younger, inexperienced members of the pagan (and witchy!) communities fall into some traps set up for them by people who wish to harm them. It saddens my heart to see this happen, as a lot of newer practitioners join these circles so they can learn! And because they're new, they often get taken advantage of.
So I'm creating this non-comprehensive list of some red flags in pagan and witch circles. Again, this isn't comprehensive. I will be updating this as time goes by, so I recommend checking in on this. For each red flag, I'll give a brief explanation as to why it's a red flag. As always, feel free to add your own in the replies and I'll add them to this post!
EDIT: 11/15/2022 - since there's been some people misunderstanding some of the things in this post, I've rewritten a lot of it so hopefully it makes more sense! Apologies to any confusion that's been caused. I also added some of the additions people have reblogged as well!
Usage of the terms "black" and "white" magick:
While this doesn't always mean someone is racist or xenophobic, within occult spaces there's this tendency to use this. The association of darkness/black things being evil isn't always a racist thing (we as humans are naturally afraid of the dark), but it did play a part in the Atlantic slave trade by associating dark skin with animalistic, evil ambitions and light skin as being pure and good. This isn't 100% a red flag, but it's good to keep an eye out when it is used!
Argues that anyone can practice whatever they want, regardless of the status of it being closed or not:
Closed practices are closed for a reason, specifically because these practices have had their people murdered, their land stolen, and their practices made illegal for many years. The reason they are closed is so that outsiders cannot just come into their sacred spaces, take what they want, and bastardize it. The belief that you can join these closed practices without being initiated/born into them is rooted in colonialism and racism. This is one of the biggest red flags. Some examples of closed practices are hoodoo, ATRs, Native American beliefs, brujeria, and santeria. Some plants are closed as well, so please do your due diligence.
The belief in folkism/volkism: that open pantheons should only be worshiped by those with their blood:
This is the complete opposite of the above. Open pantheons are open because they have not been passed down to us in a single line, and they are currently being revived. As such, these practices can't really be "closed". People who argue that open pantheons should only be worshiped by those with their blood are partaking in the same beliefs as Neo-Nazis. Please watch out for this especially in heathen/Nordic spaces! These people ARE NAZIS. The specific dogwhistle here is "go back to your roots". (Thank you to @chrisasiaheartman)
Offers to teach advanced practices (baneful magick, deity work, etc.) to newcomers:
It's true that everyone is on different parts of their practice, and not everyone will progress the same way. However, there are certain practices that newcomers should not be doing until they have the basics down. This includes baneful magick and deity work, as you can open yourself up to disastrous consequences if you don't take the proper precautions. This isn't too much of a red flag as often the people doing this do mean well, but it's still something to look out for.
They use the terms "witchcraft" and "Wicca" interchangeably:
They are not interchangeable! Witchcraft is a practice, and Wicca is a religion. These types of people often believe you must be Wiccan to practice witchcraft, which you don't.
They refer to Wicca as an "ancient" religion:
This is false. Wicca was founded in the 1960s. If they do this, it could either be tongue-in-cheek, or it's just blatant misinformation. I would be careful.
They act as though baneful magick is evil.
It isn't. Baneful magick can be a form of protection and self-defense, it is not always a bad thing.
They act as though the "threefold law" is the end-all-be-all of practicing:
Not every witch believes in the threefold law, nor are you required to. This goes back into my point about them believing you must follow Wiccan teachings to practice witchcraft. You don't, period.
The use of racial or cultural slurs, even if they claim it's in a non-discriminatory way:
They are racist. If they're mentioning these slurs in an educational way, that's fine. But if a witchcraft space is just dropping these slurs casually in speech, it's a good sign of them being racist.
They push a specific diet:
You don't need to eat vegan or vegetarian to be a witch. No one has to. Some witches might think that's the best way to practice, and that's fine! Some witches might not subscribe to that idea, and that's fine too!
They push pseudoscience and/or anti-science ideologies (anti-vax, etc.):
This is extremely dangerous. Witchcraft and science can work together just fine. People have done this for so long, and pushing these ideologies can be extremely dangerous to peoples' personal health.
Enforcement of gender binaries:
This is things like the divine "masculine" and divine "feminine". Often times these people will also claim that the womb/uterus should be worshipped as well, and the people who do this are often TERFs/transphobic. Not everyone neatly fits into a gender binary. (Thank you to @hagstone-enthusiast for this!)
They promote the idea that only witches can be female, or that male witches are called warlocks:
Witches can be any gender, and the term warlock is actually derogatory as it means someone broke their oath.
Promotes the idea that mentally ill/neurodivergent witches that that way because they have a strong intuition:
This is very dangerous because being neurodivergent/mentally ill isn't a special thing, and it often is a detriment to many people. People who claim this often believe in indigo children/starseed children. In addition, look out for people to claim that neurodivergent people are that way because they "don't have a position attitude" (thanks to @urchinbeans5000).

Where can you post/find fanfictions?
I decided to do this kind of review (no one asked) for sites that allow you to upload fanfiction.
Might not be 100% objective, but I'll try. I will talk about tags, search system, comments, content they allow, etc. I will comment some well known sites, and mention a few for fanfics in other languages.
Ā Wattpad
This site is not centered on fanfics, but it allows uploading them as a category. Works here are called books.
This site has more similarities with social sites; you have a profile that shows notoriously your number of followers and number of stories. But it cans also recommend you stories based on the ones you voted, or the users you follow.
The users can send notifications to their followers, and users can leave messages on your profile. The site also shows your activity (stories you voted/commented, users you followed, etc.). You can organize your favorites ("library") in diferent lists.
You can find fanfics in various languages (Spanish, Italian, French, a few I have seenā¦)
((It also has an app, but I never used it.)))
Ā Posting a work:
You can add an image as a cover.
You can add images to the story.
You can add a summary.
You can save a draft BUT it doesn't work that well, ALWAYS keep a backup somewhere else.
Rating: Stories can be rated as mature, but you should read the guidelines to know what's not allowed.
Category: You can only choose one category, so if you chose Fanfic, you have to add more info on the tags.
Tags search: You can add tags. Searching stories can be dificult. If a story doesn't have many votes it migth not appear.
Status: Story can be marked as complete.
Interactions:
Only registered users can leave a comment and vote. It's interesting the users can leave a comment for a specific line/paragraph. Also they can leave a vote per chapter. Anonymous/not registered users cannot interact/vote, but anyone can read.
Ā Deviantart
This site is centered in images, but it has a literature section.
As many sites, DA allows to create a profile, where registered users can leave messages. You can watch users to keep track of their work.
Posting a work:
Doesn't give too many options, for stories with multiple chapters, you need to create a folder.
Some users post their story on the comments/description of a picture, if they do it this way, it wonāt appear on the literature section.
Category: Can only be posted under the category Literature>>Fan Fiction and add another subcategory if you want (Drama, fantasy, Humor, etc.)
Rating: Works can be marked as mature, but read the guidelines, it doesn't allow to much.
Tags, search: It's okay I guess? Used to work better before.
Interactions:
Only registered users can leave a comment and fav/colect the works. User can disable comments if they wish.
Users can watch other users
Users can be blocked
Ā AO3
This site is very organized for fanfictions. Allows to upload in various languages, but most of them are in English.
With an account you can also bookmark stories and subscribe to receive notifications when they are updated.
Users can add a description on their profiles if they wish.
Posting a work:
You can add notes at the end and beginning, they are separated from the work.
You can add a summary.
You can embed images/videos if they are uploaded on another server.
Rating: General, Teen, Mature, Explicit, Not rated.
Relationships: Gen, Male/Female, Male/male, Female/Female, Others.
Archive warnings: allows warning the readers of certain topics such as violence.
Status: Story can be marked as complete.
Tags, search: It separates the tags in categories: Fandom, Relationships ("Romantic" is CharaA/CharaB, non-romantic CharaC & Chara D), and additional tags.
Users can filter a lot of things. It works really well as long as the writer has tagged things correctly. But you can find unfinished stories with tons of characters tags that didn't appear yet, or characters that barely said one line.
You can also filter per rating, and completely exclude mature works if you wish. You can also exclude a certain tag by adding a minus in front of the tag, I.E ācharactertag, -shipname
Interactions:
Depending on what the writer has chosen, anonymous comments may or may not be allowed; comments can be moderated, or disabled.
Both users and anons can leave kudos.
Ā Fanfiction net
A classic, but I just started searching fanfics again on this site a while ago. Havenāt used it to post anything, this description will be brief.
Allows to upload in various languages, but most of them are in English.
Posting a work:
Allows adding a cover for the stories.
You can add a summary.Ā
Notes had to be added along the rest of the text. Users usually separate it from the story with a line or writing in bold/italic.
Category: (Genre) Drama, fantasy, Humor, etc.
Rating: K, T, Mā¦ Read the guidelinesā¦
Tags, search: Works fine. You can add characters and ships, and also exclude them from the search if you want to avoid them.
Interactions:
Both registered users and anons can leave messages. Only users can fav.
User can follow a strory/user.
Users can be blocked
Ā Other sites to mention?
A few names, barely with description:
You might find fanfics on Amino Apps, if a user posts it there. But these are easy to lost, depending on the activity. This site can be used from a desk computer too.
You can find fanfics on tumblr, depending on your luck, reblogs and people you follow, you might find them here.
I guess there are still some active forums out there with a fanfic section...
In another languages:
(Sorry for the brief descriptions, but I barely know two languages, Iām guessing some things from the icons)
EFP fanfic net. A site for fanfics in Italian. As far as I can see, it works similarly to FF net, there is a color code for rating (green>general, yellow>teens?, red>adults) and some warnings (spoiler, triangolo, Mpreg.) It seems it also has a section for original stories.
Fanfic . es A site for fanfics in Spanish. As far as I know, the server has failed a few times before. Not super active, but you can find some stories.
Fanfictions . fr and fanfic-fr net. Two sites with fanfics in French. I kind of guess they work similarly to FF net.
Fanfiktion . de. A site for fanfics in German. I kind of guess it works similarly to FF net.
Spiritfanfiction . com and fanfiction . com . br. Two sites with fanfics in Portuguese. As far as I can see, they works similarly to FF net, stories had a cover, rating indicated with a little color square with the minimum age.
Feel free to reblog and add any other one you know.
Some tips to find stories:
I see a lot of people looking for fanfics (even commenting about not finding anything about x topic and I can swear Iāve seen at least one or two...)
Here are some tips to find fanfics (besides searching per tag)
Do you like how a user writes? Enter their profile/account and see if they have more stories. Look for their favorites/bookmarks too. (You can even find they have stories for another fandom you like!)
See who has commented/fav/left kudos on a story you like, enter their profile/account and see their favorites/bookmarks. You can also see if they have their own stories.
Search for tumblrs who reblog/recommend fanfics.
Use the google search site besides the search bar from the site, in case the author hasnāt tagged what you are looking for.
I hope someone finds this list useful!!

Sincerely Me
Welcome to my fic that is using a title that is overused! Anyways, this is based off a set of one-shots I posted, originally, on my other account.Ā
Enjoy!
Read on AO3
Evan kept his head down as he walked to the schoolās computer lab. He had to quickly finish his āself-helpā letter before his mom picked him up for his therapy session with Dr. Sherman. Slowly, Evan pushed open the door to the lab and shuffled over to a computer on the right side. Silently, he logged into the computer, found the google chrome search logo, clicked on it, and signed onto his google drive account. He moved the cursor over to the google doc containing his letter. After he clicked on it, he watched as a new paged popped up, and his letter loaded onto the screen. Evan quickly read over the letter, and noticed that he left off with:
Maybe if I could just talk to her. Maybe, nothing would be different at all.
He silent thought for a second, tapping his fingers on the table. Eventually, he began to type out the last part.
I wish everything was different. I wish I was a part of something. I wish that anything I said mattered to anyone. I mean, letās face it, would anyone even notice if I just disappeared tomorrow?
He stopped typing briefly. Evan knows this isnāt what his therapist had in mind for him to write. These letters are supposed to say the good things in life, but when there arenāt any good things, why make it up? Why not just tell the damn truth? No one would even care anyways.
Sincerely, your best and dearest friend, me.
Suddenly, his phone began to ring. Evan fumbled with it in his pocket. He quickly checked the caller ID and was relieved to see it was his mom calling him.
āH-hello?ā He asked. Evan has always hated phone calls, can't stand them. Even though it was just his mom calling, he still stumbled on his words.
āEvan, Iām not going to be able to bring you to your appointment. They needed extra help at the hospital and I was the only one on duty. Also right afterward Iām going to class, there are leftovers in the fridge for dinner.ā Heidi Hansen rushed her words as if she really needs to get back to work. Which, Evan assumed, she probably does.
God, Evan thought, I'm such a burden, she wouldn't need to work so hard if I wasn't around. I have so many problems. She has to spend too much money on my pills and therapy, I hate it.
"O-okay, yeah, Iāll ea-t that.ā Even while he says this, Evan knows he wonāt.
āDid you finish your letter sweetie?" Evan knows that all his mom wants is for him to get better. However, he also knows that she knows she'd have a better life without him.
āYeah, I just pr-printed it n-ow.ā He says, clicking on the little printer button on the top right of the screen.
āThatās fantastic sweetie. Iāve gotta go now, but Iāll see you tomorrow, okay?ā Totally fantastic. Except for the fact that his letter basically states that he wants to just disappear and never come back.
Evan nods his head but then realizes she probably couldnāt even see him. Stupid. āOkay, love you.ā
āLove you too honey.ā And with that, she hangs up the phone.
Evan sighs once again, and then, he stands up to go and grab his letter. Before he can even take a step, Connor Murphy appears in front of him. Oh great. Evan really hopes he's still not mad about this morning. Connor had thought that Evan laughed at him, and so he shoved him to the ground. However, what had really happened was that Evan didn't laugh at him, He would never laugh at him. He would never laugh at anyone really. Evan was just nervous, and so he let out a nervous chuckle. Because of this, Evam have a mental freak out moment. He still didnāt know if Connorās here to yell at him some more or what but he was absolutely terrified.
āEvan? Right?ā Connor asks, looking Evan up and down, then into his eyes. Evan shivered slightly and nodded. Evan didn't shiver because Connor was scary, he's actually really pretty. Like his sister, Zoe. Wait, not the time Evan. Shut up. Evan looked back at him, and he noticed something. Connor seemed like he was trying to tell Evan something, but then seems to think better if it and instead says, āHowād you break your arm?ā
It was an easy question to answer, Evan had practiced the answer many times, but he still stuttered.
āOh, uh, I f-fell. Out of a tr-tree.ā Evan stuttered out, picking at the hem of his shirt. Evan hates lying, but he didn't want people to see how broken he really was.
āWell, thatās the saddest fucking thing Iāve ever heard. Oh my god!ā He laughs out.
Oh, how wonderful. Evan thinks. Now I'm an even bigger loser.
Evan nodded, āYeah, uh, yeah.ā
Connor glances at Evanās cast, and he seems to notice no one has signed it.
Shit, now I not just a loser, but a friendless loser. Evan doesnāt know how this could get any worse.
āNo oneās signed your cast.ā Connor points out as if Evan hadnāt already realized no one liked him.
āYeah, uh, I kn-know.ā Evan just wishes he could stop stuttering, dammit!
āIāll sign it.ā Connor offers, probably pitying Evan. Defiantly pitying him. Most people did.
āOh, you, you donāt have to.ā Evan mentally hits himself, what is he doing? He needs his mom to think he actually talked to people. Why is he telling him no?
Connor ignores him and He holds out a hand, expecting a sharpie. Thank God he's persistent.
Evan nods his head and then stuffed his hand into his pocket. He pulled out the unused sharpie and handed it to the taller boy.
He grips Evanās hand and tugs it towards him. āOw,ā Evan mumbled.
āSorry,ā Connor seemed to have pushed it out. As if he's not used to saying sorry. Connor quickly scrawls out his name, filling up half of the blonds cast with it.
āOh, thanks,ā Evan said, with a kind of sarcastic, sort of thankful, and a bit of wanting to get the hell out of there asap tone of voice. Thankfully though, Connor doesnāt seem to notice and smiles at the shorter boy. However, itās more of a grimace. He then takes a piece of paper from his bag and lifts it up.
āIs this yours? I saw it at the printer. āDear Evan Hansen,ā You're last name is Hansen, right?ā
āUh, yeah thatās mine, um, th-thanks.ā Evan reached to take it, but Connor pulls back.
āBecause thereās Zoe? What the hell,ā He whispers this, seemingly confused, and Evan begins to freak out. Once again.
āC-connor, please give that ba-back.ā
āYou did this on purpose!ā Connorās yelling now, Evan hopes he can maybe calm him down?
āWhat?ā Very good Evan, ask a fucking question. This is super helpful.
āYeah, you saw I was the only other person in here so you printed this wanting me to see it.ā Evan knows that Connor is totally misunderstanding the situation. Evan also knows that he has no clue on how to deal with this.
āNo, I-ā
āYou were hoping Iād freak out right? So you can tell everyone what a fucking freak I am?ā
āNo, please-ā
āWell FUCK YOU!ā The long-haired boy pushed past Evan and runs out of the computer lab. All Evan can do is stare at him as he runs, forgetting that he still has his letter.
āYou what?ā Jared asks from the other side of the phone, clearly enjoying the situation that Evan had gotten himself into.
āI-I printed my letter out at school and Co-connor saw it. He thought I wanted t-to get him ma-mad! He saw that I me-mentioned Zoe, and-ā
āWait, so he read some crazy sex letter you wrote about his sister? Thatās messed up.ā Evan starts to really hope that Jared stops laughing soon.
āIt wasnāt a sex le-letter Jared! Itās for my therapy-therapist.ā Evan is trying to explain this the best he can, but Jared doesn't like to listen. He never listens.
āYou write sex letters to your therapist? That's kinky.ā
āJARED!ā
āWhatever man, but why are you telling me this?ā Evan can imagine that Jared is probably lying upside down on his bed, playing video games. He's definitely not paying attention to their conversation at all.
āBecause youāre my cl-only family fr-friend.ā That's all theyāll ever be because Jared knows that Evan is too much of a weirdo.
āYeah, okay, I gotta go dude. Good luck with that sex letter!ā
āITāS NOT A-ā Before Evan can finish, Jared hangs up the phone. Evan groans, tossing his own phone onto his bed.
How the hell is he supposed to convince Connor Murphy that that letter was meant to cause no harm.
Also, how is he supposed to get it back from him before he tells the whole school? And, once the school knows how will he live through the taunts? No, wait, forget the jokes. Connor is probably gonna kill him.
God Dammit.
Ā Connor stared at the orange bottle in his hand as he sat on his bed. For once it was made, he wanted to feel productive for his last few hours alive. He also had a box filled with all the stuff he had taken from Zoe over the years placed on his desk. Ā He has about an hour before Zoe gets home from jazz band practice, and his mom wonāt be home for another two. Connor isnāt sure when his dad will be home, but itāll probably be late, as usual.
Connor uncaps the bottle and empties all the pills into his open palm. With no more thought, he downs all the pills and lays back onto his bed, waiting for the effects to kick in.
Zoe Murphy usually considers herself a lucky girl. Sheās lucky because she made jazz one as a freshman, and sits in the first chair. Sheās lucky that she is smart enough to be in most senior classes. Sheās lucky that Alana Beck actually considers her a friend. Sheās lucky that her brother doesnāt follow through on his death threats.
Zoe Murphy is also lucky that she got out of jazz band earlier than usual. A lot usual. AT least, according to the doctors, she is. Is she had called the ambulance not even five minutes after she had, her brother would have had no chance of survival.
So yeah, Zoe Murphy is a lucky girl. Luck apparently just comes naturally to her, and even though her relationship with Connor has been torn to shreds years ago, sheās glad that sheās luckier than most. Really fucking glad.
āYo, Evan, did you hear what happened to Murphy last night?ā Those are the first words Evan hears out of Jaredās mouth on the second day of school. Evan shuts his locker and looks at his family friend. Jared is practically bouncing on the balls of his feet, gripping the straps of his backpack.
āN-no, what happened to-to him?ā
āIām not exactly sure, but you know Calvin Ferrell? Well he lives across from the Murphyās and he told Kelly Petie who told Kyle Gold who I overheard telling Kevin Lakes that an ambulance showed up at their house around five last night, and Calvin saw Zoe Murphy running out with paramedics pushing a stretcher with Connor laying on it out of the house and into the ambulance. Calvin doesnāt know what happened to him but Connor isnāt at school and neither is Zoe. So obviously it was something really big right? I mean why else would paramedics be there?ā Jared is much too enthusiastic about this.
āJ-jared! Why do yo-you seem so, so ex-excited? Wh-what if he di-died. That wo-would be te-terr-terrible!ā Evan whisper yells.
āEh, I wouldnāt worry about it, I mean so what? No one likes him anyway.ā
āJared th-that isnāt nice! You sh-shouldnāt say, say things like that!ā Evan remembers how alone he felt this past summer, and knows that whatever Connor was feeling is probably ten times worse than what he feels. He hopes Connor isnāt dead, he decides that if, no when, Connor gets back to school, Evan will try his best to try and brighten the brown haired boyās day.
āWhatever tree boy, Iām going to class.ā Jared shrugged his shoulders and left Evan standing in the hallway by himself. Evan sighs. He knows Jared fakes a lot of how he acts. He just wishes Jared was like he was when they were younger, his actual friend.
Dear Connor Murphy,
I heard about what happened the other week and I want you to know I failed as well, over the summer. Youāre not alone.\
Sincerely Me.
Connor stared dumbfounded at the letter in his hands. It was his second day back after being out of school for three weeks, and he had no idea as to why a letter had fallen out of his letter. He was even more confused when he realized the letter was addressed to him and not whoever owned the locker next to him. Then after reading the two sentenced note, he felt something inside him. It wasnāt happiness at being recognized, it was more like relief. Someone out there, though he had no idea who knew in some way how he felt. And who wouldnāt get the smallest spark of hope after realizing that?
Evan watched from around the Corner as Connor neatly folded up the letter and placed it in his hoodie pocket. Then he saw the brown haired boy give a small smile, and Evan couldnāt help but smile as well.
For the next month, Evan continues to write letters to Connor. He writes the letters on Monday and Wednesdays after his homework, then on Tuesday and Thursday mornings he shoves them through the cracks in Connorās locker. Evan knowās that Connor doesnāt check his locker until after third period, so he knows that he wonāt be caught.
Sometimes the letters contain personal information as Evan knows that Connor doesnāt know itās him, so heās not worried, for once, about being taunted. Sometimes they just include small things that happen over the week. Usually, the Tuesday letters are the long ones, informing Connor about Evanās weekend, the Thursday ones usually remind Connor how great he is.
Evanās noticed that Connor is usually happier on the letter days. Heās also noticed that Connor skips school a lot, but heās always there on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
Connor has gotten a total of six letters so far.
The second one was almost as short as the first, giving Connor one simple tip on calming down.
Dear Connor Murphy,
Counting down from ten is always a great strategy to calm down, in my experience at least. Also, my mom, she does it a lot, especially when my dad tries to contact us. Heās very inconsiderate when he does.
Sincerely, Me
Connor felt like punching this guyās dad after reading it.
The third letter talked a lot about trees, as did the fifth letter. The fourth told Connor that the mystery guy has a crush on a girl in junior year. He wondered if Zoe knew the girl as the letter never mentioned her name. The sixth letter was longer than usual. It seemed as though Letter Guy, as Connor now calls him, was stressing about something and just couldnāt stop talking. It started out about a math test the kid had, then there was a paragraph on why trees are so important to the environment, then two sentences wondering if Connor liked trees as much as he did, and it ended with five sentences of the guy apologizing as to how long the letter was. Connor thought it was hilarious, and kind of adorable. He kept that letter on his bedside table.
After the next two letters come, and Connor finds himself wondering who the guy is, he realizes that he might actually sort of like him. But he tries to ignore it for two reasons. First, why would this guy like him back, especially since he already likes someone else? Second, Connor doesnāt even know who writes the letter, how can he like someone he doesnāt know. However, Connor does know the letter guy, very well from all the information he writes down. He just doesnāt know his name or what he looks like.
Evan sits behind Connor in math class, which Evan actually quite enjoys. Math is fourth period, which means Connor comes in right after reading Evanās notes on Tuesdayās and Thursdayās. This also means that Evan gets to see the small smile on Connorās face due to the letters that he receives.Evan always enjoys seeing that smile. It tells him that he was once again successful in making Connor happy. Evan knows that it isnāt a permanent fix, but he also knows that it works for at least an hour. And an hour is better than nothing in his opinion.
After Thanksgiving break, Evan realizes that he hasnāt thought, or written, about Zoe in a month. This really confuses him, how can he go from fawning over the guitar player to never even thinking about her? He isnāt entirely sure.
That is, at least, until the first Thursday of December and Evan catches himself staring at the older Murphy all of math class. At first, Evan tells himself that he was just making sure his letters were still making Connor happy. It wasnāt until Evan was in his room, trying to go to bed while still thinking about the long-haired boy that he shoots up, now fully awake.
āFuck I like the school shooter.ā
Which then leads to Evan actually slapping himself.
āDammit Evan, stop listening to Jared.ā
Evan continues to mutter to himself about the fact that he has just figured out that he is bi. However, he isnāt just bi, no, heās really really bi for the kid he writes letters to, to make him feel better.
Thatās when his mother, Heidi Hansen, Knocks on the door.
āSweetie are you alright?ā She asks, concerned that her son is mumbling to himself at eleven at night.
āYeah, Iām fine!ā Evan shouts back, quickly laying back down.
That night Evan falls asleep with only the thought of Connor Murphy on his mind.
The next letter Connor received he was surprised to see that the mystery writer told him he wasnāt into the junior girl anymore. At that, Connor walked to his math class with a small spring in his step. He knows that the letter boy might not be into guys, but he doesnāt like the junior anymore, he has a slight chance now.
When he gets to math, the kid that sits behind him, Evan Hansen, already has a notebook out. Connor remembers in middle school when he had a small crush on the blond haired kid. He canāt help but hope that Evan was the mystery writer.
Connor spends all of math wondering what Evanās hand in his would feel like.
When Connor walked into math, Evan couldnāt help but blush at Connorās happy gait. Evan canāt help but hope that itās because Evan doesnāt like Zoe anymore, and maybe Connor likes him back. But thatās insane, who would like the wallflower anyway?
Evan spends the rest of the class wondering what Connorās hair would feel like with Evanās fingers combing through it.
The week leading up to winter break, Evan canāt stop thinking about what he should get Connor for Christmas. Sure, Evan is Jewish and celebrates Hanukkah, he knows that Connor celebrates Christmas. He only knows this because he overheard Zoe asking Alana to come over on Christmas Eve, as Zoeās parents apparently want to meet her.
Evan wasnāt sure on what to get Connor until he was at the store with Jared because apparently he needed knew flannel and his mom thought he was ditching Evan. Which, he usually does, but Mrs. Kleinman doesnāt need to know that. Evan had seen a couple black hoodies and remembered that Connorās were all worn out and faded. Then as he was walking up to the cash register, money already in hand, he saw a bowl full of nail polish and quickly plucked out a black bottle. Connor usually as his nails painted, sure they were almost always chipped, but they were also always black. Black seemed to be his signature color.
Wednesday night, Evan wrapped the gift for Connor, taping his note to the present.
Connor Murphy didnāt go to bed until one am that night. Usually, heās asleep by 12 on Mondays and Wednesdays, but this time he stayed up. He needed to get it perfect. Sure there was a chance that Mystery Writer didnāt celebrate Christmas, but thatās why Connor is signing the card Happy Holidays instead. It doesnāt need to be a Christmas gift. Just a thank you gift.
Thursday morning, when Evan went to put the gift outside Connorās locker, he was surprised to see it propped open, and not shut like normal. Curiosity was digging at him, so Evan carefully opened the locker and was even more shocked to see a small wrapped item on the bottom of Connorās locker. He picked it up, and then he noticed the card, which was addressed to him. Well not him exactly, but it did say To: My Mystery Writer and who else would Connor be calling a mystery writer?
Evan felt a small smile grow on his face as he placed the gift he got Connor on the bottom of his locker, and quickly put the one Connor got him in his bag. He then swiftly shut the locker and made his way to his first class.
After third period, when Connor got to his locker, he was glad to see that Mystery Writer took the gift, he was also happy to find out that he was left a gift as well.
Throughout math class, Evan couldnāt focus. He just stared at Connorās head. Which probably wasnāt a good idea in hindsight as Finals is the week he gets back from spring break, and he really should be paying attention the review theyāre doing. But at that moment, he really didnāt care.
The first thing Evan does when he gets home is putting the gift Connor got him under the small house plant he has on his desk. Even though he doesnāt do Christmas, maybe this one time he can pretend.
When his mom gets home and sees the gift on his desk, she asks where it came from.
āO-oh, well um. Thereās this b-boy, C-connor Murphy, and earlier this year he wa-was in the hos-hospital? So, um, I decided to, uh, write him letters. I-I wanted to ma-make him feel good. So, uh, I gu-guess he got me-me a gift?ā
āOh honey, thatās so kind of you! Iām so glad you have another friend!ā
Heidi was so excited to see the excitement in her sonās eyes as he talked about Connor.
Evan didnāt have the heart to tell his mom that Connor didnāt know it was him writing the letters, which is how he ended up baking cookies with his mom the day after Hanukkah ended. As soon as they were done, Heidi had already left for work, and Evan was tasked with the job of bringing them over to the Murphyās place.
Before he left, he found a pen and a piece of paper to quickly scrawl out a note.
Cynthia is a bit confused as to who would be ringing her doorbell at nine at night. She is even more confused when no one is at the door, and she looks down to see a plate of cookies with a note taped to it. She leans down to pick up the plate, walks back inside and shuts the door. When she gets to her kitchen, she plucks the note from the plate and reads it.
Dear Connor Murphy
Have an excellent Christmas
Sincerely Me.
Cynthia canāt help but grin at the fact that Connor has a friend. She canāt remember the last time Connor even talked about a friend. Cynthia places the note back onto the plate, then proceeds to pick the plate up and carry it upstairs to her sonās room.
She knocks twice on the door, and the music that was blaring from inside is turned off. She hears heavy footsteps and then the door opens, revealing her son who seems to not have gotten dressed today. Instead, he is in sweats, a tank top, and has an apron covered in paint over his pajamas.
Cynthia doesnāt fail to notice the hard glare on her sonās face, and so she just holds up the plate.
Connor glances at it, and noticing the note, he picks it up and reads it.
Cynthia also doesnāt fail to notice the small smile and slight blush that Connor suddenly now has, as he takes the plate of cookies and ducks back into his room.
Cynthia can already tell that whoever this new friend is, is a good fit for her boy.
Christmas morning comes, and Evan figures that now is a good time to open Connorās present. He brings the gift over to his bed. He tears open the wrapping paper and finds a book with a note covering the title.
Dear Mystery Writer
You always talk, or write, about how you love trees, so, here.
Evan flips the paper over and sees a beautifully drown Oak tree on the back. Evan knew Connor drew, as thatās what he does for most of math, but he never knew he could draw so, realistically. Before even glancing at what the title says, Evan gets up to pin the tree to his headboard, smiling proudly at it, before looking at the book.
Evan laughs when he sees itās the Encyclopedia of Trees.
Connor also sits on his bed as he opens Mystery Writerās gift. First, he looks at the note that was taped to the gift.
Dear Connor Murphy,
Your sweatshirts seem to have a lot of holes, I didnāt know if it was for comfort or what but I got you a new one. Oh, and I really like your nails so hereās some more polish.
Sincerely meā
Connor can feel the blush already beginning on his cheeks.
He unwraps the gift and instantly notices how soft the two hoodies are. He also decides that he will be using the new nail polish until it ran out. He can also feel his blush deepen and nearly scolds himself for feeling and acting this way. He shouldnāt start to like someone he doesnāt know the name of. He really shouldnāt. But then again, when has he ever done something he should do?
A week after school is back in session, the Kleinmans come over to the Hansenās place for dinner. When Jared enters Evanās room, he instantly notices the tree thatās still pinned up, and as Evan was gathering snacks downstairs, it felt only reasonable for Jared to see if he could see who drew it. It certainly wasnāt Evan, as his art skills were no better than Jared, who could only draw cartoon cats and nothing else.
When Jared is close enough to read the signature, he would have spat out his drink, if he was drinking something. Why would Conor Murphy draw Evan Hansen a tree?
When Evan walks back into his room, Jared plays innocent and asks his family friend who drew the tree.
When Evan blushes and says that itās from Connor Murphy, Jared demands that Evan tells him why Connor drew him a tree.
After Evan is done explaining the letters, Jared canāt stop laughing.
āSo first, you write sex letters about his sister, and now youāre writing sex letters about and for him?ā
āNo! Th-theyāre not se-sex letter Jared! An-and I only wro-wrote about him on-once!ā Which, was the wrong thing for Evan to say as it throws Jared into another fit of hysterics.
For the next month at school, Jared starts to act differently when heās around Connor, and Connor severely hopes that Jared isnāt the letter guy as that would mean Connor has a crush on Jared, and he really hopes that isnāt the case.
However, for a slight second Connor is relieved when Jared tells him who the writer is.
Connor was casually reading one of the letters when Jared pops up and says āI see you have another love note from Evan tree boy Hansen.ā
At that Connor watches as Jared's eyes widen and he quickly leaves. It takes a second for the brand new information to kick in, but then Connor realizes that the cute dorky kid that sits behind him in math. The kid heās always had a small crush on. The kid he silently hoped was the mystery writer, is actually the mystery writer, and Connor doesnāt remember the last time he was this happy.
Evan was just about to walk out of school when he suddenly heard someone calling his name. He turned to see Connor Murphy running to catch up with him.
āEvan, can we talk? Now?ā
Evan isnāt sure why Connor wants to talk to him, but being who he is, he gives a simple nod and lets Connor lead him to the tree that he usually sits under during lunch.
āSo, uh, Jared told me you were the one writing letters to me. Is, uh, is that true?ā Connor seems nervous and a little hopeful. Evan isnāt sure why.
āH-he told yo-you?ā
Connor nods.
āOhgodIāmsosorryIprobablywasnātthepersonyouwantedtpbewritingyouletters. Sorry.ā
āUh, could you repeat that.ā
Evan takes in a large breath of air before repeating his previous statement. āOh god, Iām so sorry, I probably wasnāt the person you wanted to be writing you letters. Sorry.ā Evanās nervous that Connor hates him now, and really doesnāt want that. He wants to be friends with him, especially since thatās the closest he can probably get to Connor liking him back.
āNo! Iām glad itās you. Youāre probably the nicest kid in school, anyone else I would think was making fun of me. I just wanted to say thanks. So, uh, thanks.ā And with that, Connor dashes away from Evan.
The next day at school, Evan is surprised to see a note flutter to the ground after opening his locker. He bent down to pick it up and is happy to find that the letter is from Connor.
From that day onwards, Evan and Connor correspond with letters for each other. They both want to talk outside these letters, be friends in real life as well.
In February Connor finally lets himself fall completely in love with the blond haired boy. However, he doesnāt tell anyone, especially Evan. Either way, Evan likes someone else. Sure, they have some of the same features, but there are plenty of kids at their school with brown hair. And the way Evan describes his crush? Definitely not him. One letter Connor received was all about this crush. Apparently, he has beautiful brown hair, gorgeous blue eyes with a small bit of brown in the left, and a face that was crafted by God himself.
Sure, Connor has brown hair, but so does half the student body. And yes, Connor has a bit of brown in his left eye, but so does Jared Kleinman and this other kid in his AP lit class. And Connorās face was most definitely not crafted by God. No way in hell.
So yeah, Connor accepted that he likes Evan. Like, a lot. But heās also accepted that Evan will never like him back. And thatās okay. Or so Connor tells himself.
It isnāt until mid-March that Evan asks Connor if he wants to go grab ice cream on Friday after school.
Connor replies back with a no shit and his phone number.
After school, Connor drove Evan to A la mode, his favorite ice cream place, and they hung out at Evanās house until Connor left at eleven at night, running into Heidi Hansen, who was thrilled to finally meet the boy her son speaks so highly of. She then asked Connor for his momās number so she could talk to her.
Both moms were ecstatic to hear about their sons hanging out.
They were also happy to talk to each other about them.
Both boys had a blush on their faces for an hour afterward.
And both of them fell asleep with the other on their minds, once again.
For the last two and a half months of school, Connor and Evan are practically attached at the hip. Evan was at Connorās house for Easter since Evan doesnāt celebrate it and his mom was working. Then, they skip prom and just hang out at Connorās house watching 80ās movies. They fell asleep on the couch, Evanās head on Connorās shoulder, and Connorās head on Evanās head.
At the end of senior year, Evan informs Connor that he didnāt apply to any schools so that he could take a gap year and save up for school for a while longer. Connor decides then and there to just not go to college until Evan goes. Connor doesnāt want to be alone, heās not good at making friends, and to get through life he just really needs one. He got lucky with Evan. He doesnāt think he will get as lucky again.
Evan gets a job at the Pottery Barn, and Connor works at the Michael's next door. They always share their lunch breaks together, and they carpool to work as Evan doesnāt like to drive, and Connor does. Plus it means more time being together, and neither of them will pass up that opportunity.
That winter, Connor, and Evan were at Evanās house. Heidi was at work, taking on the night shift and wouldnāt be home until early the next morning. The boys took advantage of that situation and broke out a bottle of bourbon to share as they watched Lord of the Rings.
By the time they were on the second movie, both of them had a pretty good buzz going on.
And both boys were a little Childish when drunk.
āHey, hey Evan.ā Connor whispers, giggling.
āWhat?ā After thereās a slight pause, Evan asks again, āCo-connor, what?ā
āOh! Oh right! I wanted to tell you something.ā Connor isnāt giggling anymore, but he still has a large smile adorning his face.
āAnd?ā
āItās very important. Iāve know for a while now. I wanted to tell you sooner, but I was nervous. Haha, Iām kind of nervous now, but like, less than usual. You know?ā
āCo-con, just to-tell me. Please?ā
āOh right! I havenāt said it yet! Well, I like you!ā
āI know th-that Con! Thatās why we-weāre best fri-friends!ā
āNo! I mean I love you! Like, I want to date you and kiss you! All the time. But I donāt cause I donāt think youād like that.ā
āWell, th-thatās not true Co-con! I want to kiss you all the time too!ā
āReally?ā Connorās very surprised, but also extremely happy.
āYe-yeah!ā
āThen, can I kiss you?ā
Evan answers with a swift nod and Connor grabs Evanās shirt collar and pulls him in for a sweet kiss, thatās long overdue.
When they pull back, neither of the boys have their eyes opened all the way. Theyāre both smiling, and theyāre both still gripping onto each other.
Evan goes in for another kiss, and they fall back onto the couch, kissing lazily until they fall asleep, Evan on top of Connor, arms, and legs tangled, smiles still on their faces.
When Heidi comes home, she promptly ignores the bottle of whiskey on the coffee table. Instead, she grabs a blanket from the basket by the TV and spreads it over her son and his new boyfriend. She smiles as she takes out her phone to send a picture to Cynthia, telling her that she expects the twenty bucks the next time they go out for coffee together.
She also decides that sheāll talk to the boys about the bottle after she congratulates them.

How to build and deploy your own personal portfolio site
Hello! My name is Kevin Powell. I love to teach people how to build the web and how to make it look good while theyāre at it.
Iām excited to announce that Iāve just launched a free course that teaches you to create your very own fully responsive portfolio website.
After youāve finished this course you will have a neat-looking portfolio site that will help you land job interviews and freelance gigs. Itās also a cool thing to show to your friends and family.
Weāre going to build the portfolio using Scrimbaās interactive code-learning platform, and then deploy it using DigitalOceanās cloud services.
Also, DigitalOcean has been generous to give everyone who enrolls a free credit, so it wonāt cost you anything to get it up and running.
This post is a breakdown of the course itself, giving you an idea of what's included in all the lessons. If you like what you see, make sure to check it out over on Scrimba!
Lesson 1: Introduction
In the first lesson, youāll get an overview of the course so that you know what to expect, what you should know before taking it, and what youāll end up with once you're finished. I also give you a quick intro to myself.
Lesson 2: Setting things up - HTML
In part two, Iām going to show you around in the Scrimba environment and weāll also set up the project.
All the images are supplied, so you wonāt need to worry about looking for the perfect photo just yet. We can focus on building the portfolio!
Donāt forget that you can access everything you need from text and colors to fonts and much more at our dedicated design page.
Lesson 3: The header area - HTML
Itās finally time to start building out the portfolio. In this lecture, we will create the header section. We will brush up on the BEM methodology for setting class names in CSS, and I think youāll find that this makes the navigation simple and straightforward to create.
Lesson 4: Intro section
Next up is the Intro section of the portfolio. This is where we will introduce ourselves and put a picture of ourselves.
In the end, we add a section about the main skills/services we can do. For the moment we can just fill it all in with āLorem ipsumā text as a placeholder, until you're ready to fill it in with your own text.
In this chapter, weāre finishing off the rest of our HTML with the last 3 sections: About me, where weāre going to introduce ourselves in greater detail; Work, where weāre going to add some of our portfolio examples, and our footer.
Footers are ideal for linking to email addresses and I will show you how to do that with an <a> tag. We can also add our social media links there too.
For now, it all looks a bit raw and all the CSS fun is ahead of us.
Lesson 6: Setting up the custom properties and general styles
Alright, time to get make that page look amazing!
In this part, weāre going to learn how to add custom properties.
While setting up CSS variables can take some time, it really pays off as the site comes together. They're also perfect for allowing you to customize the site's colors and fonts in just a few seconds, which I take a look at how to do once we wrap up the site.
Lesson 7: Styling the titles and subtitles
Having set all the needed typography, I will walk you through the subtitles of designing and styling the titles and subtitles in our sections.
Lesson 8: Setting up the intro section
Over the next few chapters itās going to be quite hands-on, so no worries if you feel like rewatching the screencasts a couple of times.
We're keeping everything responsive, using CSS Grid and taking a little dive into using em units as well.
This is the perfect example where CSS Grid shines through and weāre going to learn how to use properties like grid-column-gap, grid-template-areas and grid-template-columns.
Lesson 9: Styling the services section
To add a little bit of interest, I look at how we can add a background-image to this section of the site. It's a nice way to break up the second and avoid just having solid color backgrounds everywhere, and I also look at how you could use background-blend-mode to change the color of the image to help keep the look of your site consistent.
As a bonus, weāre also going to learn how to style out buttons when they are hovered over or selected when we tab through the page.
Lesson 10: The About me section
Great progress! So this is the all-important About me section. This one is pretty similar to the Intro because weāre going to use CSS Grid, but move the picture to the right side and find a useful example for CSS fr unit.
Lesson 11: The portfolio
In this screencast, I will show how to build our portfolio section to display some of our great work. And weāre even going to learn how to use cubic-bezier() to a great and impressive effect with some hover styling!
Lesson 12: Adding the social icons with Font Awesome
This cast will be sweet and short, so you can rest a bit and learn some quick tips and tricks.
Adding social media links with Font Awesome icons is a breeze. We can do it with an <i> tag and then adding a class name of an icon you wish to add.
As an example, hereās how to add an icon for GitHub once you have Font Awesome linked in your markup.
<i class="fab fa-github"></i>
While the icons are in place, we do need at add more styling here to get them to be set up the way we need them to be.
With a little use of flexbox and removing the styling from the list with list-style: none it's relatively straight forward.
Lesson 14: Setting up the navigation styles
We have left the navigation to the last because very often itās one of those simple things that can take the longest to set up and do correctly.
Once completed, the navigation will be off-screen, but slide in when a user clicks on the hamburger icon. The first step though, is to get it styled the way we want it to look, then we can worry about actually making it work!
Lesson 14: Creating the hamburger
In this screencast, youāll learn how to add a hamburger menu to transition to the navigation view. Itās not an icon or an svg, but pure CSS.
Weāre going to have a chance practice ::before and ::after pseudo-selectors, transition, and, since it's not a link but a button, we also need to define the different cursor when we hover over the hamburger icon to indicate that it can be clicked with cursor: pointer.
Lesson 15: Adding the JS
With a little bit of JavaScript, I will walk you through the implementation of a really nice and smooth transition from our main screen to the navigation window on click of the hamburger menu.
I also take a look at how we can add in smooth-scrolling with CSS only by using scroll-behavior: smooth. Yes, it really is that simple! It also makes a great tweet for Today I Learned (TIL). Feel free to send you TILs to @scrimba and Iām sure they will be really happy to retweet them!
Lesson 16: Creating the portfolio item page
With the homepage wrapped up, it's time to work on a template portfolio page that can be used to give more details on each of the projects that you are putting in your portfolio.
We're also going to learn how to link it seamlessly with our main page for a nice user experience.
Lesson 17: Customizing your page
This is where the magic of CSS custom properties comes in!
In this video I look at how we can customize the custom properties that we set up to change the color scheme of your site within seconds, and how we can update the fonts quickly and easily as well in order to make the site your own!
Lesson 18: DigitalOcean Droplets - What they are and how to set one up
In this screencast, we're going to explore DigitalOcean droplets. They are Linux-based virtual machines and that each droplet is a new server you can use.
It can seem daunting, but they are super easy to set up, very customizable and come with a lot of useful features, like a firewall automatically.
I'll talk you through every single step of the way so that you know exactly how to set a droplet up.
Lesson 19: DigitalOcean Droplets - Uploading files via FTP
To finish the whole process off, let me show you how we can upload our portfolio to the droplet we've created in the previous chapter and now it's online for others to see!
Lesson 20: Wrap up
And that's it! Your next step can be to make this page all about you, add all the relevant examples, tell us about you and make it live in a DigitalOcean droplet.
Once you've put yours together and got it online, please share your portfolio with Me and the team at Scrimba! You can find us at @KevinJPowell and @scrimba on Twitter, and we would be really happy to share what you're up to!

Accessibility, UX, & LibGuides - The Minimum
The following is adapted from a training session I gave for my workplaceās Hump Day Huddle Up training series. Itās a primer in basic stuff to do to avoid your LibGuides being a hot mess.
Accessibility - How to Avoid Being an Ableist Loser
Fonts Fonts Fonts*
*to be sung to the tune of Motley Crueās Girls Girls Girls
1em allows font to automatically resize according to user preference - if you must use pixels, 16px is good.
Fonts should be sans serif for screen use.
Examples: Calibri, Arial, Franklin Gothic
MIND YOUR CONTRAST
When in doubt, black on white or white on black.
Tool to check colour contrast located here
Follow these rules to avoid your users going full SpongeBob.
[image: spongebob with red bleary eyes from eye strain]
Images
Every. Single. Image. Needs. Descriptive. Alt. Text.
For an example of how to do this, check out my alt text below the embedded image. In Tumblr, you sometimes have to place it below the image - in LibGuides, you right click on the image and put it under alt text inĀ āImage Propertiesā.
[Image: An image of a brown Australian shepherd cuddling a small plastic Pikachu, illustrative of how cute the authorās dog is.]
Make sure your alt text is descriptive of both the image's contents and any function it may serve!
Multilingual Pages?
Switching languages? Use language tags! Language tags can be attached in <p> for paragraphs or <span> tags for sentences/words.
<p> This sentence is in English. </p>
<p lang="en-GB"> This sentence will be read with a British accent </p>
<p lang="es"> Esta frase es en espaƱol. </p> (Spanish)
<span lang="fr"> Cette phrase est en franƧais </span> (French)
To Find Your Language Code, Use the Following Tables: ISO 639 Code Tables
PDFs and Documents
You MUST use only accessible PDFs and documents.

If you HAVE to use an inaccessible document, place an active offer to make said document accessible on demand and prepare to follow through.
Videos
Closed caption all your videos!
Itās super easy with YouTube and a script handy.
Not scripting? Idk what to say to you.
jk I do itāsĀ āstart scripting your videos bruhā
Provide descriptive video or a text-only descriptive option for your visually impaired users.
A brief rundown on descriptive video here.
Fancy Web StuffĀ
Limit Tabs - 6 or less is good!
Avoid creating content that refreshes the page without user input.
Itās real rough for users with voice controlled mouse movement.Ā
If you must use a slider it should be for an image reel and not for functional content.Ā
Sliders cause difficulties for people with mobility issues.
Test Your MIGHT
Test your LibGuides for screen reader compatibility to avoid formatting errors that make your page unusable internet swampland.
To test for free:

General UX - Donāt Look Like a Mess
Your Users Donāt Have to Read These You Know
Users skim information - build so they can skim!
Use subheadings, lists, etc.
Avoid paragraphs or lists longer than 6-8 bullet points.
Write like a person, not an academic.
āWeā offer services. āYouā can use them.Ā
Plain, concise language and a personal tone go a long way.
Simplicity is key.
Avoid overwhelming users.
Youāre Making a Functional Tool So Design Like It
Remember the F shape of user eye patterns when designing!
Most important content is top and to the left
Make each page as if the person using it has never been trained on subject guides, libguides, or libraries before.
If you can do this, youāve attained the minimum standard in LibGuides accessibility and UX! Of course, you should still conduct user testing to determine your layouts and content are working as intended, but at least this way they can use whatās there to begin with.
