reading retrospective 2023: extremely thick and unexpectedly gripping general histories
#as a disclaimer for nonfiction books of like 450+ pages- no i havent' read every word no i haven't verified everything the author says etc#etc#but the gold war: a global history one i just dug up. i read most of it in high school when i had an IB depth study of the cold war#it's a really interesting repositioning of the cold war by looking especially at africa latin america and asian nations and the smaller#and domestic aspects of it. obvs can't say i agree with/can verify westad on everything#but a super important repositioning incredibly critical of both us and soviet imperialism and the results#the reformation is also interesting in terms of i will admit to not really reading the actual martin luther parts#but macculloch goes into detail for hundreds of pages about the reformation as social revolution and that is FASCINATING holy moly#the stuff with gender. with family structure and homosexuality and whichcraft and sex and death and how this affected social patterns and#ordinary people#ditto last call. haven't finished this but a nuanced history of nuanced issues and the feminist and progressive concerns at play also#fascinating#anyway. just like not what i expected from the cover unexpectly gripping#reading retropsective

Social Issues that Help with Understanding Buddy Daddies
Here are some political, social, and cultural aspects of Japanese culture that I think is important to keep in mind when watching Buddy Daddies. Please note: this is a super long post, with lots of pictures.
1. Human Trafficking - Slave Labor
In Episode One, we learn that Miri’s birth father was involved in labor based human trafficking involving Southeast Asian individuals. This is currently a very big issue in Japan, since Southeast Asian immigrants (among others) are viewed as a cheap labor option and usually experience slave labor like conditions.
From The United States Department of State website:
Men, women, and children from Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Latin America, and Africa travel to Japan for employment or fraudulent marriage and are subjected to sex trafficking. Traffickers use fraudulent marriages between foreign women and Japanese men to facilitate the entry of women into Japan for sex trafficking in bars, clubs, brothels, and massage parlors. Traffickers keep victims in forced labor or commercial sex using debt-based coercion, threats of violence or deportation, blackmail, confiscation of passports and other documents, and other psychologically coercive methods.
2. Drugs in Japan
When I was living and working as an ALT in Japan, two ALTs (in a different district, but within the same company of my own), got caught with drugs. It was a big deal and ended up in the newspapers. The company I worked for had to do a lot of PR work with the elementary and junior high schools that they had contracts with, to ensure that the contracts would remain. As for me and the other ALTs? We had to sit through like five separate meetings within like two months about drugs and drug laws in Japan.
The barebones takeaway is that, in Japan, weed is viewed as being on the same level as hardcore drugs. Charges can be steep and strict. Even just knowing that someone has drugs, and you don’t say anything to law enforcement about it, can get you in trouble. There is a grey area with drugs, which is stuff like bath salts and the like. Since the selling of things like that cannot be prohibited, so they are easily accessible to the public.
Japan still has a very “90′s D.A.R.E.” approach to drugs. It’s catchphrase is 「ダメ。ゼッタイ。」or “No! Never.”
(Image from a Web Magazine called Nagasaki Press.)
When celebrities are caught with (what’s usually) weed, it can basically be the end of their careers, since recreational drug use of any kind (excluding alcohol, of course), is still negatively looked down upon in Japanese society. This is why it is still heavily left in the hands of the yakuza and drug kingpins, etc. Though there has been a recent increase in protests and ideology surrounding the idea of legalizing weed. Still, not much acceptance for recreational use is likely to come yet. However...
There may soon be some revision to the laws, which will allow for medical use:
Legislation changes scheduled for 2023
In 2021, the MHLW established an expert committee to review the Cannabis Control Act, and it is expected revisions will be proposed in a bill to be submitted in 2023. This will most likely allow for the use of medical cannabis. 2022/12/02
From: Euromonitor
So, something to keep in mind when Kazuki talks about a drug kingpin here is that this drug kingpin is likely not just dealing with super, hardcore drugs, but also softer ones too, like weed.
3. Child Protection Squad
There is this misconception in Japan that really young kids, like Miri’s age, can just roam free all around Japan and no one will find it odd. In Episode 1, we do see Miri roaming around the city without anyone really taking notice, but she also wasn’t in an area where there would be people that are trained to take notice.
In the above image she is at a park, which is likely close to a school somewhere. The man that approaches her here has a band around his jacket sleeve that says こども見守り隊 (kodomo mimamori-tai), which gets translated to “Child Protection Squad.” Basically, these are like crossing guards, in a way, because they do play a similar role to that, but they also do more than that as well:
(Image from the Japanese website: Nice Senior).
This people basically ensure that kids stay on the right paths on their way to school. Most of the time, when elementary school children head off to school, they will go in groups (with the 5th or 6th graders being the leaders) and there will often be older people outside their houses on their way in, keeping an eye on the children to make sure they get to school okay.
And that’s talking about elementary school aged kids. For ones that are around Miri’s age, usually the parents (mostly mothers) will bring them by bike:
Or they will get picked up by a bus:
This one looks pretty boring in comparison to some others you might see though, like these:
(Image from the Hiyoshidai School Website)
Sometimes the daycare workers will also take them on little excursions outside using big strollers for the kids to travel around in:
(The image is obviously from a stock photo site called fotostock, but yeah, I’ve seen these before when I lived in Japan).
But a little toddler just sitting on her own at a mostly empty park with just a guy sitting at a park bench nearby watching her? That would raise attention and an eyebrow from someone who is essentially a crossing guard and whose job is to ensure the safety of kids as they travel to and from school.
The rest is under a Read More.
4. Police in Japan
I saw a comment somewhere (maybe it was over on Youtube) about how the cops are portrayed here in Buddy Daddies. The comment was basically that Japanese cops wouldn’t be that aggressive with a child. But, well, cops in Japan have issues like everywhere. Though, the main issue with cops recently has more so been with racial profiling:
(Excerpt is from a Japan Times article entitled: 60% of people with foreign roots questioned by Japanese police, survey finds).
Of course, this situation is different from the one we see happening with Miri, but the Japanese police have issues with corruption too. So this happening wouldn’t seem too out of the realm of possibilities to me. The anime Tiger & Bunny 2 Part 2 also recently had some moments in the season where there was some anti-cop (ACAB-type) sentiments expressed by a character (though that series is also meant to take place in a city based on NYC).
5. Issues Surrounding Reproductive Rights, Contraception, and Abortion
“Took advantage of me” is fairly vague wording, but considering the type of guy he was, and the fact that Miri’s mother is caught in another abusive relationship, it wouldn’t surprise me if Miri’s conception wasn’t fully consensual one. People like to talk about how safe Japan is, but Japan has a lot of sexual violence that goes unreported:
(From an article entitled: Many sexual violence victims in Japan do not report assaults to police, support groups: survey - The article was posted on November 24, 2020 over on The Mainichi news website).
There is a lot of societal pressure in Japan, that can cause a lot of judgement as well. Especially around issues of reproductive rights. From a Japan Times articles entitled: Pandemic provides an opportunity to improve access to contraception, posted on January 30th, 2022, we can get a little insight into the issues surrounding contraceptives:
The article also talked about the judgement that can come with contraceptives. The last line also talks about abortion, which comes with its own set of issues in Japan:
(From The Japan Times article: Abortion legal and apolitical in Japan, but cost and consent present barriers)
So abortion was likely an option that Miri’s mother didn’t think was really viable, especially in her situation.
7. Being a Single Mother in Japan, Adoption
In Ep.3 we hear Kazuki parroting a lot of the stuff you usually hear when it comes to women in children, like it is meant to be a natural and innate thing. There is a societal pressure for a woman to give birth and care for the child, even when they aren’t in the best situations to do so. Miri’s mother was, for all intents and purposes, a single mother. Since I doubt the abusive man she is currently with had any hand in helping Miri.
Being a single mother anywhere can be a big challenge, but especially so in Japan. Some issues that single mother’s face in Japan, according to the article “Why Most Families with Single Mothers in Japan are Living in Poverty” from a site called The Borgen Project:
From that same article, we learn that joint-custody and child support doesn’t exist in Japan. So Miri’s mother was likely under a lot of societal and financial stress, along with possible Post-Partum Depression, and (also probable) burnout. This doesn’t mean that her behavior or attitudes are okay, but that they are likely a result of a failed system.
I’ve seen some people bring up adoption, but adoption doesn’t automatically mean that a child will have a better life either. My grandfather’s mother was force to give her children up to the state, so my grandfather spent a good chunk of his life in an orphanage. It wasn’t a pleasant experience. And the probability that Miri would have been adopted had her mother gone through the actual system is, sadly, extremely low. From an article entitled: “The state of orphans in Japan and how to help” found on the site Zenbird.Media is this bit of information:
And even if Miri had been in an orphanage, Misaki (Miri’s mother) would still be her legal guardian.
So an option like that would be unappealing for Misaki, because she doesn’t want anything to do with Miri.
7. LGBT+ Individuals Being Viewed as “Not Productive”
Finally, we have the last thing I briefly want to talk about. The main backbone of Buddy Daddies, which is these two hitmen taking care of a child. Last year, a Japanese politician was in the news because she retracted some previous statements she made in 2016 and 2018. We are going to focus on her 2018 statements, which were:
Her comment received a lot of backlash and was big news. Her retracting her statements also brought a lot of news and talk too. The above information comes from The Japan Times article: “ Japanese lawmaker retracts past remarks on LGBTQ and other minorities.” Her other comments are awful too, but it should be noted that her one about sexual-minority couples stems from the issue of Japan’s declining birthrate. Even though many people in Japan are supportive of LGBT+ rights, there are people that hold a similar viewpoint as this.
Buddy Daddies is pretty directly challenging this ideology, especially with how they have been handling things. So that’s pretty cool and revolutionary in its own way. It makes me interested in seeing how this continued topic as well as any future social issue topics will be handled or touched upon in Buddy Daddies.
If you read this all until the end: thank you so much! I put a lot of work into this write up and I hope it can help (I learned some things too while researching!).

happy pride month!
i figured its as good a time as any for me to finally post my gay book recs 😌
theyre overwhelmingly YA as im a young adult and thats what ive been reading, but im widening my horizons, so stay tuned for more mature entries! ill be updating this list as i read more gay lit.
WLW 4 or 5 out of 5 stars
- She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen (les/bi, enemies to lovers, sports, set in high school, YA)
- The Falling in Love Montage by Ciara Smyth (great writing, appealing characters and authentic chemistry, i think les/les, YA)
- Not My Problem by Ciara Smyth (also amazing, also les/les, has heavier themes, YA)
- Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo (historical - 1950s, asian american sanfran culture, butch/femme, YA, deserves its popularity. do Not read the spin off its not worth it)
- Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron (fairytale retelling, feminist focus, les/les, YA)
- This Poison Heart + This Wicked Fate by Kalynn Bayron (urban fantasy, bi/les? i think, poisonous plants, greek mythology, two books, YA)
- How to Excavate a Heart by Jake Maia Arlow (les/les, YA, lots of "reclaimed" slurs, lots of secondhand embarrassment, but if you wanted something seasonal for winter here you go - its not bad!)
- A Spindle Splintered + A Mirror Mended by Alix E. Harrow (fairy tales, lesbian mc, other wlw side characters, fun and short, written for tumblr and its obvious, sometimes depressingly real)
- This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amar El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone (time traveling, enemies to lovers, short chapters, tries to be poetic and sometimes it succeeds sometimes it doesnt)
- Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield (horrors of the ocean, it doesnt get better - no happy ending, still beautiful though)
- Salt Slow by Julia Armfield (women-focused horror short stories antology, i would call it bisexual moreso than lesbian, definitely worth a read)
- Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flag (a story that takes decades and focuses on many characters, two of the most prominent are in a same-sex relationship, lovely and bittersweet at times)
- The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall (set in the early 20th century and quite sad, a very relatable story of a gnc lesbian woman growing up and living as an "invert", looking for her place in the world)
- Affinity by Sarah Waters (historical - late 19th century - mystery, set in a large part in a women's prison, mc suffers from depression, spiritualism is a strong theme)
- Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead by Emily Austin (contemporary litfic about a depressed lesbian with severe anxiety, a tough read if you relate but SO good, and against all odds it has a happy ending)
MLM 4 or 5 out of 5 stars
- If This Gets Out by Sophie Gonzalez and Kale Dietrich (gay/bi?, YA, secret dating, two boysband members, alternating perspectives)
- Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall (fake dating, cringe but somehow fun when you get into it, very organic writing)
- Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston (gay/bi, YA, enemies to lovers, actually fun!, better than the movie^tm, a bit cringe with the ~progressive~ lines and fanficky moments)
- Time to Shine by Rachel Reid (gay/bi, sports romance, there were so many beds and still they chose to sleep in one together, very fun + funny)
- Icebreaker by A. L. Graziadei (bi/gay, rivals to lovers, YA, sports romance, a little internet-y at times, theres a side poly relationship)
- More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera (NOT a romance, super depressing, a lot of deep homophobia, but also beautiful. i gave it 5/5 on goodreads, YA)
- Masters of Death by Olivie Blake (a fun urban fantasy with a large, found-familyish cast, some slight Harry Potter references and a lot of humor and existential pondering, lovers to strangers to enemies to lovers, bi?/bi)
- All For The Game series by Nora Sakavic (gay/bi m/m, such a guilty pleasure but its SO good, its like a sports anime but 1. the sport is made up 2. its actually gay 3. theres the mafia involved??, very early 2010s with how edgy it is but its worth it i promise. a LOT of trigger warnings though, if its important to you - CHECK THEM BEFOREHAND)
honorable mentions that arent very gay focused but are very good
- If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio (campus novel/dark academia, the m/m is mostly subtext, heavy style of writing but so worth it, shakespeare abound, please read it)
- Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio (a halloween-y mystery novella about rats, mushrooms, academia and journalism, a Very Slight f/f element but its enough for me to put it here)
- The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater (YA, fantasy, literally so good, not much of the m/m romance but when it happens it HAPPENS, 5/5 im obsessed with this series)
- The Tusks of Extinction by Ray Nayler (a short sci-fi novel about bringing mammoths back, multiple povs, one of those is focused on a gay couple - which is irrelevant to the story but i loved the book so im using this opportunity to promote it)
- When Among Crows by Veronica Roth (polish folklore inspired urban fantasy, a 3 person found family, very short (160 pages) and reads quickly, if youre polish yourself though be prepared for cringing - language errors abound, a little m/m)
- Several People Are Typing by Calvin Kasulke (a short epistolary novel about a guy with an office job whose soul got sucked into the Slack app. written entirely in Slack messages. VERY funny, quite thought-provoking and at times beautiful! has a small sprinkling of m/m)
less than 4 out of 5 stars but i read them so ill state my opinion anyways
- A Scatter of Light by Malinda Lo (YA, wlw - bi/les, great writing boring story, gnc lesbian compared to a boy later revealed to identify as nonbinary, homophobic slurs "reclaimed", cheating, unfinished sideplots)
- Ash by Malinda Lo (YA, wlw, bi/les i think, fairytales, fantasy, uncomfortable het age gap, moral of the story - love triumphs all)
- The Charm Offensive by Alison Cochrun (YA, mlm, gay/gay?, lots of awkward internet popculture references, slurs, writing mostly fun and engaging but at times felt like an educational PSA)
- The Coldest Touch by Isabel Sterling (YA, wlw, les/bi, marketed as lesbian Twilight - do not be fooled, the author is weird abt race too though, the romance isnt really fleshed out)
- These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever (mlm, an attempt at dark academia, the start was interesting but then it turned into disgusting fetishization of violence in a gay relationship, written by a tif and you can tell)
- Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney (the mc is bi and her best friend is a lesbian, the characters are all awful, it kinda felt lesbophobic at times but i dont have proof)
- Hani and Ishu's Guide to Fake Dating by Adiba Jaigirdar (wlw, YA, as you can guess fake dating, also rivals to lovers iirc?, its nice but just didnt catch my attention much)
- A Million to One by Adiba Jaigirdar (wlw, YA, a heist on the Titanic, i dont know why i keep giving this author a chance, you need to suspend your disbelief so much its inadvisable for atheists to read it)
- Honeymoon for One by Rachel Bowdler (winter holiday romance, les/bi ("pan"), lots of grief and conflict and not enough of the romance developing, so many awful mothers??)
- Running With Lions by Julian Winters (YA, mlm bi/gay, the writing isnt that good, a bit of misogyny)
- Don't Want You Like a Best Friend/More Than a Best Friend by Emma R. Alban (victorian era les/les romance, a very light read - dont expect a historical drama, theres a large focus on other m/f pairings. warning: lowkey step-sibling "incest" - read the book description)
- You're the Problem, It's You by Emma R. Alban (sequel to the previous position, victorian era mlm gay/gay romance, dont expect historical accuracy here)
- You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron (wlw YA slasher horror with supernatural elements, the final girl trope plays a big role, i dont read horror often but this one is not good even though i like the author)
- The Magic Between by Stephanie Hoyt (gay/bi mlm, main character with OCD, an interesting though maybe overdone magic system, overall though just a goofy tumblr romance - nothing special, but good fun)
- The Nightmare Before Kissmas by Sara Raasch (bi/? mlm, holidays with magical royal families, romcom but not a lot of the rom - you can tell the author usually writes fantasy and not romance, fun and silly but nothing amazing)
sekcja polska 🇵🇱

My Rules with Fanfics and Headcanons + Blocklist Reasons:
Before I forget, I don’t write for Mortal Kombat anymore. I lost all interest a long time ago. Plus looking back at my main blog during the Mortal Kombat phase makes me want to cringe into a wadded ball of paper every time someone leaves a like on one of my old posts or reblogs. Oh and if you want to request something, do it in the notes. It may sound strange, but it’s because of yet another stupid bug on Tumblr where I can open my inbox up on my main blog but for some reason not on here. It just kept telling me, “it needs to be 26 characters long” and whatever, so until the bug is fixed (which will probably be never lol), we’re gonna have to make requests via the notes or if you don’t want to do that my DMs are always open.
As of right now, requests are open, just keep in mind that I’m slow and I procrastinate, lol.
And also, this is EXTREMELY important: because from what I heard from Tumblr being Tumblr… if I cannot use tags related to any TWs/CWs, it’ll be in a “Content Warning” note. Example: Content Warning(s): CNC
Finally, kiddos, go play Nintendo or something. This is a blog made by an adult for adults. That is also going to be a recurring tag for any explicit fics I make or reblog.
General:
I do NOT do the following: Incest, Rape (closest you’ll get is a reference or implied rape, which WILL NOT be between the ship or CNC), Underage (as in Underage x Adult or Underage Characters having sex on screen), Mutilation during sex, golden showers, feces, spitting in mouth (or spitting in face), cheating (ick), sounding (it looks painful to me), period sex, feet, cervix fucking (as a woman this makes me cringe super hard), oviposition (keep your eggs to yourself and not inside someone’s holes, thank you), High School AU, having sex while pregnant (I got no problems writing about pregnancy or pregnant characters but that’s where I draw the line) and more will added/removed.
I do male x male, female x female, and male x female ships.
I write for male, female and gender neutral readers. I do NOT write for a specifically detailed reader such as short reader, Black reader, Latino reader, Asian reader, White reader, fat reader, tall reader, skinny reader, reader with big boobs, reader with small boobs, etc, etc. it defeats the entire point of a reader insert in my opinion. At THAT point… it’s now just an OC.
Speaking of OCs, when I do Canon x OC, I mainly do my own, so those will be tagged as such when you go into character tags.
I’m also thinking of doing text message AU type things because I’ve been reading them a lot in the JJK Fandom (all of you make such REALLY good ones, I swear to god), just keep in mind I’m a special type of lazy, and will just write it like a typical fanfiction or series of headcanons.
I will always have a trigger warning in the notes and in the tags similar to how I would use the “Non-Con” archive warning on A03, whenever I write CNC, so if that is not your cup of tea or it is very triggering for you to read, filter out tags (I’m gonna have tags titled “CNC” and “consensual non-consent” like this to make it easier), block me if you want to, just remember to stay in your lane when it comes to content like this. In fact, keep a very close eye out on this emoji: “⚠️” next to the title on these types of fics and any other fanfics that deal with serious subjects.
I hate that this needs to be said now, but when I write things like CNC, it’s purely fantasy, I do NOT condone any of the stuff I write. It is NOT an encouragement to do any of the stuff I write in real life. If anyone thinks that this is an encouragement to harm actual real people, then that is a completely different story. It’s like blaming Shooter games for real life mass shootings. This is gonna be the one and ONLY time I say this.
Devil May Cry Specific:
Obviously, no Spardacest, it’s weird. No smut involving DMC4 Nero or DMC4 Kyrie that is also weird.
I don’t ship Trish with any of the Sparda bloodline.
I don’t ship Vergil with Lady. I don’t write anything with Reboot Vergil because I hate him.
I also don’t write the Sparda twins sharing the same partner because in my opinion that’s on the same level as Spardacest plus the idea of dating two siblings (or literally any family members period) simultaneously makes me go, “bleh…”
No, I’m not gonna write anything about Nero x Kyrie, those two are canonically adopted brother and sister, and them being boyfriend and girlfriend is super weird. When I write Nero x Reader for instance, Reader is taking Kyrie’s role as the love interest, and Kyrie will be depicted as being Nero’s sister (maybe even having her date Nico instead).
Resident Evil Specific:
I write mainly for Leon, Carlos, Chris, Piers, Buddy (underrated king), Jill, Claire, Rebecca, Helena, Jake, Sherry (obviously canonically adult Sherry if it’s smut involving her) Wesker, Ada, and more will be added or removed soon.
I don’t ship Wesker with anyone except Ada Wong and William Birkin. I also don’t write for Aeon, because I prefer looking at artwork of them rather than writing about them or reading about them, if that makes sense. My main ships are Chreon, Leon x Ashley, JilLeon (Not enough content of them tbh), Jill x Claire, Jake Muller x Sherry Birkin, Kennechenko, Metaltango, and more will be added or removed soon.
Street Fighter Specific:
I write for Ed, Luke, Rashid, Chun-Li, Cammy, Elena (come home faster baby girl), Falke, Poison, Ken (there’s gonna be special rules with him), Ryu, Juri Han, and A.K.I. More will be added or removed soon.
When I write Ken x Reader, I have Reader be Ken’s spouse in place of Eliza, so don’t worry, he’s not being a man hoe while married, he’s gonna be married to reader instead whenever I write any romantic or sexy situation with them. This rule applies to any canonically married character I may become interested in.
Also when I write A.K.I, I am NOT going to ship her with Fang Fei. I know it’s canon that she simps for him, but that’s literally her adopted father and her master, so it’s a “nope” from me.
The Evil Within Specific:
Call me crazy, Ruvik and Stefano are my slasher villain fantasies just like how any girl thirsts for Ghostface. So… when I write sex scenes with them and Reader, always expect hardcore sex acts.
Detroit become Human Specific:
Here, on both my main blog and this blog, Hankcon and Reed900 requests are equally welcomed with open arms. No ship bashing!
I’m not writing anything for Leo Manfred or Todd because screw them.
A lot more things will be added to the future.
All of these rules apply to my A03 too.
My Reasons for blacklisting/blocking someone:
Keep ALL of this in mind and then you’ll know why certain people are blocked.
If you’re rude. No need to explain this any further. You only get to be rude to me once and only once. Cross the line with me, you get blocked.
If you harassed/bullied/threatened someone. I label myself as anti-harassment, and I don’t want that energy anywhere near this blog. Do not act shocked that you got blocked after you threatened me, my followers or someone else.
If you are pro-censorship. Alongside anti-harassment, I’m anti-censorship. We already deal with corpos censoring movies and shows we like, we ain’t dealing with that here.
Being bigoted in general. Again, I don’t need to explain this further. And also, how are you here, on Tumblr being bigoted???
You’re under 18. Yet another explanation that does not need more explanation. The A03 link in my bio has adult content contained in it. The content I make on this blog is adult content. You should not be here. That is why you are blocked/were blocked.

Pretty Dudes: Gay Asian erasure, Spiderman, a car hookup, and hamburger sex. All in 11-13 minutes.
I wanted to know how Carlin James, who is apparently straight, got cast on Pretty Dudes, a webseries about a group of gay guys sharing a house in West Hollywood and negotiating life, love, sex, and race. He appears as CJ in four episodes, but unless the titles have changed, only one of Carlin's episodes is streaming on Amazon Prime: 1.9, "All American Type."
Scene 1: Hustler Jay (Tae Song) and photographer Zario (Brian Michael Nunez) are playing video games when a shirtless Spiderman approaches, announcing that he has super powers now, and can protect the queens. How special, girlfriend.
Scene 2: Flashback to the day before. We hear Elijah (Carlin James) envisioning oral sex. Psych! He's talking about a hamburger. Not a hot dog?
Gregory (Leo Lam, left) enters from the kitchen and, annoyed, tells him to just eat it, but he continues making sexy sounds. Wait --according to his page on the IMDB, Carlin plays CJ, but according to the tv series page...heck with it.
Scene 3: Reality tv confessional room. Model Sunji (Yoshi Sudarno, left) confesses that he doesn't understand photographer Zario because he doesn't act gay. But he'snot normal, so Sunji just tries to be a good friend.
Cut to photographer Zario getting ready for his first job "since the breakup," filming a podcast hosted by artist Kito (Chance Calloway).
Scene 4: Model Sunji cooking shirtless. He sees a spider and freaks out.
More after the break
In another room, the podcast has begun. From left to right, the hamburger oral sex guy CJ/Elijah; host Kito; and Samuel. Out of the shot, Gregory, the "just eat it" guy, and Zario, filming them.
They get high, giggle, and discuss the gay Asian-American experience:
The problem is, in school, people of color are taught as relics of a bygone era. Marco Polo visits China, Japanese-Americans are sent to internment camps during World War II, and that's the last you hear of any Asian person. They cease to exist. "So Hollywood can't acknowledge us in contemporary roles. They think of us as relics." So is it the gay Asian-American actor experience?
Scene 5: Business law student Ellington (Xavier Avila) sits in a car. His date, pretending to be a prostitute, asks "What you looking for, Handsome?"
"Just get your butt in the car," Ellington says, annoyed.
So, what should they do on their date? First they have to rush over to the guys' house: "I got a text saying that Sunji was trying to burn the place down," He's still trying to swat the spider in the kitchen?
Back to the podcast: If a role is described as "an all-American type," don't even bother. to audition. They want a white guy.
Back to the kitchen: Hustler Jay comes in, hears about the spider, and jumps onto a counter.
Scene 6: Back to the podcast. Instead of watching Friends, you could be watching Living Single, but you don't, because you are programmed to identify with white people. Or you could watch something from this century.
Samuel continues: "We are all able-bodied straight males, so we could be cast in The X-Men, but we won't be, because Hollywood thinks only white guys can be heroes." Wait -- I thought these guys were all gay. Maybe it's a podcast on the Asian-American acting experience, with some straight guys who don't actually live in the house. Gregory points out that he's gay, "So your assumption of privilege is already faulty." He continues: we can be privileged in one identity and marginalized in another.
CJ/Elijah agrees: We've been programmed to believe that we can only concentrate on one injustice at a time. So you can be Asian or gay, but you can't be both. But we need to work on all forms of oppression.
Concluding thoughts: CJ/Elijah wants more Asian representation in mass media. Samuel wants to see an Asian superhero movie. Gregory wants the revolution to be intersectional.
Scene 8: Gamer Alexander (Kyle Rezzedy),enters the kitchen. Now there are three shirtless guys cringing in fear of the spider. He must be the one who got bitten, and thinks, or pretends to think, that it gave him Spiderman-type powers "to protect the queens." And it cleverly ties in the "Asian Superhero" reference in the podcast. The end
Beefcake: The guys have their shirts off most of the time. No nude photos outside paywalls except for "coyly covering the penis" shots.
Diversity: All but one of the guys is Asian.
West Hollywood: No exteriors.
Gay Characters: I thought this was about gay guys sharing a house, but according to the fan wiki, hustler Jay, the one fighting the spider, and business student Ellington, the one whose date pretended to be a prostitute, are straight.
What about CJ/ Elijah: He doesn't live in the house; he just came over for the podcast. But Gregory cooked him a hamburger, so they must be boyfriends, right? Or it's a misdirection: Cj/Elijah got the burger somewhere else, and he's messing with Gregory by acting like it's a penis that he intends to go down on. I can't tell.
My Grade: Hearing about the experiences of Asian-American actors was interesting, but a spider in the kitchen seemed a little weak for a B plot, even in an 11-minute episode. And there were too many misdirections. Do straight guys really spend a lot of time pretending that they want to have sex with their gay friends? The guys being shirtless throughout was a plus. B
The full review, with nude photos, is on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends

hmm, maybe just some things that youre familiar with?? /nm
like,, stuff from your region/child hood, what you grew up with, etc
again, this is all /nf :)
these r some of the ones i cld think of frm the top of my head !!
- i grew up in the province before we moved to manila so i was taught a shitload of superstitions (i.e. sweeping floors / cutting nails at night is bad luck, "pagpag" or shaking off bad spirits after attending funerals so they don't follow you home) a lot of them i still do subconsciously 😭
- filipinos celebrate christmas super early , once september hits the christmas decor is up and the music is on full blast
- maybe a bit of a stereotype but ? chismosa (gossiper) culture is prevalent here , kinda the main way you're gonna learn abt people is through gossip (might be amplified since i'm in high school 🤞)
- family ties r important !! we always have gatherings with extended family at least once a year to go to the beach and stuff
- additionally, kinda general to asian culture probably but respect for elders is especially shown here, with the action of pagmamano (bowing, taking their hand and lowering your head to meet their hand) as a sign of respect
- a lot of filipinos are super conservative as a result of sticking to tradition + religion , very telling by the fact that divorce/abortion/same sex marriage isn't recognized/legal here 🤞
these r pretty general things abt filipino culture since i'm frm metro manila and im the filipino equivalent of an unseasoned white kid 😭 hope this answers ur question !!!

Haha oh my i love gyarus! I don't know why, but i love how they look!!! Some people find them tacky or even trashy but theyre super stylish to me! Btw, what do u think of ganguro?
Well, gyary was tacky, but they were endearing because they were free spirited and had a genuine love & dedication for what they were doing. They were bold enough to confront the normative rules of Japan of what considered "appropriate" or "beautiful" for women. Gyaru knew they were repulsive for a lot of regular Japanese men and they didn't care. Absolutely iconic.
Unlike appearances, gyaru was less male pandering than what people may seem when looking at these "bimbo" looking girls. Normie men were scared/repulsed by them ; they were loud, roaming in 'gangs' (found sisterhood was very strong in gyaru culture)... They had quite a bad rep beside the gyaru bubble....
Gyaru also openly talked about their sex lives (I think Egg magazine had a whole "wild" section where models talked about their latest hookups and were showing off their sex toys💀) and it was extremely bold of them to do in a society where (non AV(=porn star)) women explicitly talking about enjoying sex is also a taboo/turn-off for men (in many hentai or p0rn in general, the less consent from the girl, the better right?)
Also the reputation of gyaru being trashy/having a questionable hygiene comes from the fact that it was a thing for a bunch of them to sleep with their makeup on....to keep wearing the next day because it was so expensive/time-consuming 🥴 lol
Gyaru was a VERY high maintenance (nails, makeup, hair extension, tanning, clothing...) and it was hard for some of them -especially those who for some were still in high school- to keep up with it financially (hence the whole 援助交際 / enjokousai thing -which is basically sugar baby'ing-)
As for ganguro..........let's say......it wouldn't fly so well today xD
I mean............💀💀💀💀
Tbh I don't mind Japanese girl ruining their skin at the tanning salon to look exotic and subversive....but yeah as a Black woman, it was pretty "fascinating" to witness it in real time.
I never thought ganguro wanted to "look Black"'" but rather be a subversion of the whole traditional "pale" beauty standards of Japanese culture, and therefore become as dark as possible.
If Black people have issue with ganguro, they should have the same energy against waves and Black women literally pasting Asian women hair on their head. At least ganguro tanned their own skin 🥴 Once Asian women start claiming weaves and start asking Black women to stop appropriating their hair it will be done for weaves wearers...........💀💀💀

This is an awesome addition to OP. It really points out something that I feel strongly about which is that if we allow our overarching society to teach our children about nudity they will find it sexual. Because media treats nudity as sexual, the major voices in politics and religion view nudity as sexual, and if you were to be curious as a kid and look things up online it would likely lead to pornographic sites rather than those of acceptance and academia (in my personal opinion this is due to the internet always being a ‘free market’ space and that means the things that ‘sell’ always appear first which is sex and violence).
One reason for our issues is also due to the fact that we as people are not placed in situations with nudity as the ‘normal’ so deviation is ‘abnormal.’ My experience as an artist in a family of artists (my sister is 6 years older and started going to nude figure sessions in high school so it was normalized in elementary school for me) has placed me in the absolute ideal setting to view nudity as non-sexual, people outside of that setting find it weird or uncomfortable. But I hope as @mostofthingsmostofthetime pointed out, if people were in those situations while they may make comments, joke, find discomfort at first, it would quickly become normal. And perhaps people would find greater appreciation for all kinds of bodies outside of sex, making nudity normalized.
My curiosity on these viewpoints is something I really like discussing with people; questioning why it’s weird to see someone naked is important! For some people it’s that they are a private person who has a hard time seeing people naked and others seeing them naked (I completely respect this choice; even in my situation I still am uncomfortable with my own body being viewed nude). For others though it is simply because they are conditioned to view nudity as sexual and why would they want to see a nude person they weren’t attracted to? To that I’d ask why they feel like they’re opinions on beauty should dictate how other people present themselves?
It causes what was said before where we view even in our own spaces we feel uncomfortable being nude because we are being “too sexual” or “not sexy enough.” I know I have hated being naked at times because I haven’t been in “optimal viewing” for someone else who quite literally does not exist and is not in front of me. That’s so toxic! To not feel comfortable in your own skin is so damaging! To think that the medias portrayal of what is “sexy” determines your worth hurts literally every single person. I myself am lucky in that even with all that I am a white, straight size, bisexual woman. To even call myself “lucky” that I feel disgusted with myself at times because of the media is horrific because I know that people of color, people with disabilities, queer individuals, fat people, have never had the privileges I have had ‘fitting in’ to this idea of beauty.
This all to say that I am super passionate about open communication about nudity. And to all black, Latina, Asian, African, queer, disabled, fat, and/or gender non-conforming individuals, there is NOTHING wrong with your body. It is not there for the viewing of other people, it changes, it adapts, it keeps you alive.
P.S. this is also part of an equally important conversation of the respect of sex workers. As seeing someone in a sexual manner is also not a bad thing if there is consent, but too often we think nudity is an open invitation to sex, and the media HEAVILY implies that any sexual consent is consent to every sexual act including violent ones. Nudity is not an invitation, sex has to be consensual at EVERY step, and sex workers absolutely should be treated with the highest respect and safety in mind.
Thank you for returning to my Ted talk, I have a lot of feelings.
I honestly think that the lack of non-sexual nudity in public spaces has done horrific damage to American society.
We deeply struggle to understand the natural diversity of bodies because we only see naked bodies in a sexual context. We are taught that seeing nudity is somehow inherently harmful, especially to children. We struggle to differentiate between sexually suggestive and sexually explicit material.
It fucks up the way people think about and talk about sex ed. It fucks up the way people think about and talk about breast feeding. It fucks up the way people think about and talk about queer folks. It feeds into fatphobia and ableism and is all rooted in this deeply harmful puritanism.
Like, I need people to understand that seeing a bare titty in public is not going to hurt a child. Seeing a man in a banana hammock isn't inherently traumatizing. I would argue, in fact, that adults treating those things as dangerous and gross and scary is going to do way more damage to a kid's psychology than seeing the nudity in the first place.
#people are wild#most of this comes from Christian ideas#which also places heavy gender/sexual roles on women#it’s so counterintuitive#I’m gonna die mad about it#because many of these ideas also come from men who shame women who participate in forms of nudity#then they consume these forms the most out of any other group#it’s super hypocritical#it’s to control women#and to control people of color#it’s a super xenophobic/racist concept historically#again#I will die mad about it

More:
PERSONALITY
• Himari's personality is complicated. She can be very energetic and loud like a child, she can be very cold and intimidating, she can keep it cool and make wise decisions or be reckless and bloodthirsty. People usually call her a maniac for her unstable nature… Which isn't wrong.
• Himari isn't mentally stable. She struggles to trust people and finds it even harder to let go of the people she loves. That's why she sees attachments as a weakness. But she was never one to listen to her own advice and constantly finds herself attached to people and objects… Unable to let go.
• Himari has some mental problems that effect her personality. She is a sadomasochist (sadist and masochist) and when she forgets to take her ADHD meds she gets super hyperactive and can't think properly, causing her to make mistakes, forget stuff and be reckless.
APPEARANCE
• Himari was born with her mother's gorgeous blonde hair but she dyed most of it black at the age of 15 after some series of events. She left her bangs and the underlayer/inner section of her hair blonde for some reason...
• Himari has black eyes and white pupils. The reason of her strange eyes is unknown.
• Himari has no light in her eyes. This is due to some traumatic events she had been through in the past.
• Himari has doe eyes but they can look like siren eyes when she is serious.
• Himari has dark circles under her eyes. The reason for this is that she doesn't take her melatonin meds regularly like she is supposed to.
• Himari is skinny on an unhealthy level.
• Himari is a bit small for her age.
• Himari likes all types of clothes and doesn't have a specific preference, this is due to her complicated personality.
• Himari has so many tattoos all over her body that even she lost count. She sometimes gets some tattoos removed because she gets bored of them or for some other reason. She also gets new ones every once in a while. Its like a game of spot the tattoo. You never run out of new things to find.
• Himari has piercing holes almost everywhere on her body, as long as she is comfortable getting them. She doesn't wear all her piercings at once and instead wears whatever one(s) she feels like wearing that day.
• Himari always wears her star hairpins and never takes them off. Only exceptions to this are when she needs to shower and when she sleeps.
• Himari sometimes has bandages on her arms. This is usually a sign that something is stressing her and causing her mental health to decrease. The bandages are usually to hide SH marks.
STRENGHT/FIGHTING STYLE
• Himari despite her small size can lift up much bigger things than herself.
• She uses her phone to materialize anything she wants to use as a weapon, she doesn't have a signature weapon.
• Himari moves fast and uses her small size to her advance. She uses her main phone to materialize more screens she can use as escape routes and to move faster. She jumps screen to screen in order to dodge and deliver fast attacks from every direction, confusing her opponent.
• Himari is careless. She doesn't care if she gets hurt and enjoys the pain in her opponents' eyes. Her sinister smile almost never drops and if it does, then something is horribly wrong.
• Himari's fighting style is so flawless that if she took the fight seriously, she could even beat the number 1 hero, Dream.
• Himari is strong on her own but when she is fighting alongside Alyssa/Chaos they're stronger than any hero and villain. They fight in perfect harmony and cover each other's flaws.
• Himari always carries more than 1 phone and has two daggers in her thigh band as an emergency weapon option.
HOBBIES
• Sewing/making clothes
• Stargazing
• Doodling
• Making paper stars
• Playing video games
• Night walks
• Motorcycling
• Playing the guitar
• Ice skating
• The strike game :)
FEARS
• Bugs
• Confronting her past
• Losing the people she cares about, or seeing them hurt.
• Being the one to hurt the ones she loves
• Being judged for who she is or who she became
• Being like him...
ABOUT POWER
Himari can connect with technology in two primary ways: by physically entering a device or by linking her consciousness to the internet.
Physical Entry:
• Himari can convert her body into code and enter a device. Once inside, she has the option to stay within that device to manipulate it, travel through the web to interact with online systems, or hop across connected devices worldwide.
• Like the internet itself, Himari's abilities are vast. She can search, retrieve, steal, download, delete, modify, or transfer files between devices. Her power allows her to materialize objects from the screen or dematerialize items by pushing them inside. With her unmatched hacking abilities, she's one of the best hackers, capable of breaching any system in seconds.
• Himari can alter anything on a website, create un-hackable sites, and evade any attempt to trace her, whether through social media or other means. Her online presence is virtually untouchable, making her impossible to dox or hack.
• When Himari becomes a code, she is seen by systems as an unknown entity—a virus. Yet, she’s not entirely a virus, as she retains her humanity. Unfortunately, this makes her vulnerable to attacks from both anti-virus programs and viruses themselves. While some viruses manifest as physical creatures that she can fight, others affect her more insidiously, causing damage over time that is hard to detect.
• Depending on the severity of the virus, Himari can experience anything from mild symptoms like headaches and dizziness to severe conditions like hallucinations, paranoia, and even loss of her sanity. Some effects can cause permanent harm, fainting, or death. Anti-virus programs can have a similar, though weaker, effect.
• Inside a device, Himari’s digital form can be seen, heard, and interacted with. Physical actions within the device, such as tab closures, resizing, or touchscreen interaction, can affect her. If a device shuts down or breaks while she’s inside, she must escape quickly, or she’ll be trapped. If a device closes while she’s halfway out, the part outside will be cut off. This lost part slowly disintegrates into code, but can be regenerated with time inside any device.
Consciousness Connection:
• The second way Himari uses her power is by connecting her consciousness to the internet. This allows her to control technology without physically entering devices. She can do this whether she is conscious or unconscious.
• When connecting her consciousness, Himari can still manipulate systems, though with certain limitations. However, in this form, she’s immune to viruses and other digital threats. To focus better, she often prefers to be unconscious, especially when sifting through vast amounts of information. However, during high-stake situations, such as combat, she stays conscious to retain full awareness.
• Through this method, Himari can overload devices, send messages, activate alarms, and perform a wide range of actions—all while remaining undetectable.
FUN FACTS
• Himari does her own piercings.
• Coffee addict (No one is happy about this, but she doesn't particularly care)
• Himari has gambling addiction but its not that bad.
• Himari picked up some bad habits growing up such as drinking, smoking and SH.
• Himari is diagnosed with ADHD and Insomnia. She is taking medication for both.
• Even though Himari is supposed to take her ADHD meds every day, sometimes she forgets and acts like a child hopped up on sugar.
• Himari makes paper stars when she is stressed or upset over something. This used to help her calm down, but lately it doesn't seem to be enough.
• Himari's house is full of paper stars.
• She has a dog named "Chase".
• Himari has a motorcycle.
• Himari has a white bunny plushie made by her mother. She calls it "Mr. Carrots" and holding it comforts her. No one knows about its existence.
• Himari has a weird obsession with adding big bows on her outfit designs.
• Himari's powers become unstable when she is really stressed, upset or blinded by rage. This causes her body physical form to glitch uncontrollably. Due to himari not being able to hold her code form together like a solid body in the physical world it physically hurts like she is losing parts of her body.

March Reads
Betting on You by Lynn Painter (10/10) I'm in love with Lynn Painter's writing. At first, I read this with the mindset that nothing YA/hs will beat Wes Bennett from BTTM knowing Charlie is Wes' cousin. However, this book also made me sob. There were a lot of tropes jam packed into this, but I enjoyed it. The only thing I didn't love about this one is Bailey, the FMC. She was a little naive and I like my FMCs a little strong. But the way these two acted and interacted brought me right back to high school. This is a perfect friends to lovers book and I will absolutely cry over it any day. A quote that really stuck with me was "I wanted to show you that you can trust me to never disappear again" when Charlie wanted to give Bailey his cat. BABY, I WILL SOB
The Cupcake Cowboy by Rose Rayne Rivers (7/10) This was an ARC read for an indie author. I am currently in my sports romance era (when am I not tbfh) but I was like hmmmm let me jump into this. Not going to completely lie, I got bored. I did like Kaytlyn's sassy mouth, but it was also like ???? Do u know when to shut up. Blayke and Kaytlyn met when Blayke's "brother" (by heart) brings him to the diner Kaytlyn works at to showcase his crush. Immediately, Blayke falls in love. The insta attraction threw me off. But the struggles they went through was mediocre. I didn't feel my relation to the characters at all.
Break the Girl by Rachel Jonas and Nikki Thorne (7.5/10) For a dark romance, I didn't hate it. I was kinda surprised at this, but then again, people are saying that it's not really a dark romance so i don't know. But to me, it was a dark romance bc I would personally not like to exist in here. But it was slightly in this world so I don't know if it classifies as such. ANYWHO, I got this on one of syk days, and I was like I need a break from fluffy romances or at least a filler. This one is about a bully frat which I can kind of see, but also, it's like what the fuck is this brotherhood shit. It's also a why choose which is why I was kinda okay with it. Let's cover all this shit up with smut and it'll all be alright. The girl was realistically fighting against her fate, and the boys ended up pleasuring her altogether. So in a way, it was sweet they didn't push her. This is part of a trilology which is cool, but like there's no HEA or any sense of closure so I am not necessarily looking forward to finishing/continuing.
Collided by Lauren Asher (7/10) I liked this a bit better than the first one. I never got around to reading it until I found an audio version of it. This one, like the first book, was tension filled. To the point where the slow burn didn't make sense because we all know what's going to happen like there was no angst at all. I do love banter and a slow burn, but it was kind of like there were no other barrier. Under developed for an Asher book imo. A lot of things didn't make sense such as why Liam was so fixated on Sophie's "fuck it" list when he kind of had something like that with someone else and ended it. That didn't make sense to me. Or the father-daughter relationship between Sophie and her dad-- super weird imo. But I mean I did end up liking it more and might as well finish the Dirty Air series.
The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang (7.5/10) I personally had a love-hate relationship with this book, but I can't lie that this book made me feel things. I did feel the romance/love aspect, but it wasn't as strong as other emotions. I hated the fact that Michael, the Asian MMC was a sex worker (escort). Like there's nothing wrong with it, but the fact that he experienced racism while doing his work made me so uncomfortable. And he had to be Vietnamese too like that shit hurt so much. Anyway, someone said the autism was fucked out of Stella, the FMC, and I cannot stop thinking about that. I honestly don't think the characters would last together IRL, but it was a cute attempt that they ended up engaged/married.
Faceoff by Mari Loyal (7.3/10) This book was an ARC so I didn't know what to expect. This was a sports (hockey) romance in a college setting. I have some things that I didn't like, but I honestly did enjoy it. It had me giggling and kicking my feet. I love my independent and strong FMCs. This is a rivals-to-lovers romance which has a latina FMC. I loved getting to know her family. And the MMC, chef's kiss. He's so patient and kind to her, Luz, and he lets her shine. If he wasn't so young, I'd be in love.
Hook, Line, and Sinker by Tessa Bailey (6.9/10) I was actually loving this at first then I got super bored. Granted, it was a book in a form of audio, but I thoroughly understood it and loved it at first (the tension) then I got super bored. I was like why??? Then I realized it wasn't because of the friends-to-lovers trope, but it was because the FMC, Hannah, was kind of unlikable. Her problem was kind of stupid which like to be fair is something everyone goes through, but it's just that fact that lil miss billioniare feels that way is insane. She was like disguised as a poor girl. I barely liked her in Piper's story; she was kinda eh. And Fox was so likable in Piper and Brennan's story. Too bad he is kind of unlikable in his story as well. You're telling me everyone treats him like a player and although he has a hate-love relationship with it, he refuses to step out of his own stereotype???? Give me a break. These two will break up in the mere future tbh.
Alpha Inmate by Liliana Carlisle (6.2/10) I mean it definitely wasn't as bad or terrifying as "The Sacrifice" but it wasn't good either. This is my first romantasy and even though it was a novella, it was confusing as fuck. Are they animals? Alpha, Beta, Omega like yeah they could be part wolf or whatever like in Teen Wolf, but like going into Rut and in Heat???? Another read I shouldn't have let Tiktok influence me to read tbh. I hate it here!!! I only read for one cute scene which did happen, but it wasn't even cute. He didn't come to comfort her because of the storm. He came to fuck her as well -cries-. Anyways, this is straight corn on paper.
