Jasper National Park, AB (No. 8)
The park contains several major roads, most of which are intended to be scenic routes that provide access to all of the park's front-country attractions. Since a good sample of parks scenery and wildlife can be viewed from the roads themselves, driving them is considered a core part of the park experience.
Highway 16 (part of the Trans-Canada Highway and Yellowhead Highway systems) is the main route through the park and is the only major east–west corridor crossing the mountains in that area. It serves as both an important trade and travel corridor for through traffic and a tourist route allowing visitors to access and view many of the park's attractions.
The Icefields Parkway (also known as Highway 93) is a highway 230 km (140 mi) in length running from Lake Louise, Alberta, in Banff National Park, to Jasper, Alberta, where it meets Highway 16. The scenic highway runs parallel to the continental divide, providing motor and cycle access to the heart of the Canadian Rockies and is considered to one of the park's main attractions. Along its length the parkway has many viewpoints, tourist attractions, hikes and campgrounds. The Athabasca and Sunwapta Falls are both accessible by the road. In May 2014, Glacier Sky Walk opened to the public. It is glass-floored observation platform 280 metres (920 ft) over the Sunwapta Valley. Unlike Highway 16, the Icefields Parkway is strictly a tourist route, and all freight traffic is prohibited from using the road. All users must have a parks pass.

Sunwapta River and Falls (Jasper National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: Here I wanted to capture an image with a portrait orientation as it had more of the rapids and then leading to the falls.

Day 14 Journey from Jasper to Banff First stop Athabasca Falls
And a quick roadside stop at a place I think Bruce (the bus driver) called Tickle Falls.
Then it was off to the Columbia Icefield Centre, with the view of 3 glaciers . . .
Hilda and Athabasca glaciers (left)
and Athebasca and Dome glaciers (right)
Dome Glacier is one of four glaciers fed by snow/ice/water from Snow Dome peak. Water from Snow Dome's summit can end up in the Pacific Ocean, the Arctic Ocean, or the Atlantic Ocean!
Then, all aboard an Ice Explorer
to go walk on Athabasca Glacier (and drink the glacial water!).
(Proof I was actually there)
Next stop was the Skywalk over the Sunwapta Valley
with views through the glass floor.
Then, lunch at the Altitude restaurant in the Columbia Icefield Centre before heading back on the road.
We got stuck in traffic at The Big Bend for around 35mins. This is the place where the two teams building the Icefields Parkway (one from Jasper in BC, the other from Banff in Alberta) were supposed to meet. Apparently some of the calculations were slightly out, so they "fixed" it with a giant curve in the road to bring the two ends together.
(You'll have to look closely to see the queued traffic in both directions.)
Our final official stop of the day was Peyto Lake (or a lookout above it.)

On Saturday we started the day by gorging ourselves with carbs from the best bakery in Jasper courtesy of Papa Cheng's recommendation (Bear's Paw Bakery). And by gorge I mean Rob had a jalapeño pizza pretzel, spicy sausage roll, raspberry white chocolate scone, and 1/3 of my cinnamon bun 🤣.
We dropped by Athabasca falls and Sunwapta falls and then made it to Peyto Lake to hike to the lookout and onwards to Bow Summit Viewpoint. While it was another warm and sunny day, the conditions were completely different. While the Valley of Five Lakes was completely dry, this hike was still fully covered with snow (and full of people slipping and sliding in their sneakers and crocs). Thankfully we'd brought crampons and micro spikes so were able to stride with confidence. The trail to Bow Summit was so fun, exhausting, and HILARIOUS. The snow was a bit iffy so in many spots you had to be really careful where you were stepping (basically a balance beam width) or else you would fall knee / thigh deep into the snow - see the fifth picture for an example 🤣. We each 'fell' at least a dozen times and Rob ended up with mini cuts all over his legs as the snow was filled with little icy shards. But that didn't dampen our spirits and we fully enjoyed the exercise and the views. The sun was so bright and hot that Rob also received his first snow sunburn - on his arms, calves, and even his neck under his chin due to the sun reflecting off the snow! Afterwards we agreed this was our second favourite highlight of the trip (after the northern lights) because we had so many laughs along the way.
At the end of the day we dropped by Lake Louise to take advantage of the last weekend of free parking (😂🥲) and had another good laugh at all the people standing out on the lake in this kind of spring weather.
