Little Sister Curtis Headcanons

these were inspired by this request and co-created with my pal @a-libra-writes!!

Libra and I came up with the name “Sunshine” because 1) it’s adorable and 2) you can’t tell me that’s not a name that Mom and Papa Curtis wouldn’t have had written down on the baby name list. Her brothers usually call her by her first name, but Sunny also works just fine.

Only about a year gap between Sunny and Ponyboy which places her at around 13 if we’re going based off the book’s events (while ignoring certain plot elements that make me sad, thank you)

Sunny is a bit more like Darry after their parents die; she tries to keep the house clean and take over her mom’s responsibilities. Because if Darry is gonna earn the money, maybe she can help this way. Her brothers worry that she’s growing up too fast and try to get her to take it easy (pots meet kettle!!!). 

Darry tries to take her out to the movies when she gets stressed out even if he falls asleep 10 minutes in. She doesn’t really mind that he dozes off, she’s used to it. It's the thought that counts. 

Soda has her come to work with him sometimes and help out on the cars. “Learn something!” as if she doesn’t learn enough at school. Comes home dirtied and tired of Soda and Steve, complains a bit but she's smiling.

Tags along with Ponyboy to anywhere he wants. They usually go for walks and talk about school and the gang. 

If Johnny is the “pet brother” for the Gang, Sunny is the pet sister and has an interesting relationship with the rest of the boys.

Two Bit is viewed as a “decent” brother figure and he at least knows how to act around a younger sister. Probably the most likely out of the group (next to her actual brothers) to look after Sunny like his own kid sister. There’s no antics you can get up to that surprise him anymore than he’s already used to. 

Steve is a pest to her and gets in the way of spending time with Soda. They have a small rivalry but it’s less tense then Steve and Pony’s relationship for sure. Sunny doesn’t tag along nearly as much so it kinda evens things out. 

Dally and Sunny…..are what I’d describe as a Tom and Jerry dynamic but who's Tom and who's Jerry is always changing. Mutual chaos and the source of that chaos switches depending on the day. Dally is on Sunny’s shit list because he made a comment about her cooking once. Which, to be fair to Dallas, the potatoes in the soup WERE NOT cooked through so he was right, but she still holds a little grudge. It doesn’t matter if he was the only person to actually eat all of it. She scolds Dally for putting his feet on the coffee table, he calls her a brat, she aims the football for the back of his head, he pulls on her hair and purposefully calls her by the wrong name. Laughs like a fiend when she yells “Dallas Winston im gonna knock your head right off!". But she also knows that Dallas would be the first person to knock someone’s teeth out if she needed him to. 

Johnny is her pal and she enjoys his company the most of the Gang. He’s a good escape from the rowdy bunch and he doesn’t cause nearly as much damage in the house as the rest, he helps with the dishes and he laughs at her jokes. She likes him and he likes her and they’ve got each other’s backs.

The Brothers are worried about raising a sister. I mean they know fundamentally that she needs what they do and that for the last 13 years they’ve been doing a good job of looking out for her, but all 3 of them are concerned that they’re not enough for Sunshine. Not only did she lose her parents, she lost her Mom and she doesn’t have anyone who can fill that spot. Mrs. Matthews helps when she can and she’s a lifesaver to Darry when he has questions, but he can’t shake the feeling that Sunshine was robbed of better and stuck with them. 

Darry goes a bit easier on Sunshine than he does with Ponyboy. Part of that is because Sunshine and him are more alike than the other two siblings, so they understand each other better. The other part is that Darry thinks Sunshine is already taking on too much responsibility by trying to replace their mom. 

Darry taught her how to fight when she was like 9 and she’s gotten into good scraps with the Gang, but Darry and the rest are adamant that she stay out of fights because she’s too little. Sunshine is all too ready to toss out that she’s only a year younger than Ponyboy! To which the rest of the boys say, “He’s a kid, you’re a baby”. This in fact does not stop her from fighting when she needs to but she does try her best to stay out of trouble for Darry, especially after their parent’s deaths. 

She loved so much. Darry doesn’t say it nearly as much as he knows he should (and that applies to all his siblings) but he goes out of his way to make sure Sunshine has something special just for herself once in a while. Soda routinely suggests getting her a haircut when he notices her messing with it or hears her one off comment about not feeling pretty or looking nice. Ponyboy tries his best to help her out around the house or with her homework. She knows they love her and she loves them.

☆ He is such a fun caregiver-  

☆ He loves to take his little ones outside to play games. He loves playing tag, going to the park, and in the summer, he takes you to the pool. 

☆ He thinks its adorable when you wear his flannels or his work shirts 

☆ he loves when you play with his hair (bonus points when you use the butterfly clips, he got you)  

☆ Since he is around Steve a lot, he is also probably one of your Carrers/babysitters.

☆ He is more of a quiter caregiver but nonetheless he is still a good one

☆ He will write little reminders about how he loves you and how he is so happy to take care of you  

☆ movie nights at the in are also a big thing

☆ He hangs with johnny a lot so he is also probably a Carrer/babysitter 

Johnny: 

☆ He like ponyboy is also more of a quiter caregiver  

☆ Johnny tries his best to help his little one with things like tying their shoes and helping them open their snacks 

☆ Johnny dosent really have a lot of money to get you tiny things but he tries to make up for it such as sneaking you in to the drive in for a movie or by asking ponyboy to barrow some of his art supplies so you can color. 

☆ Johnny loves to see you with his jacket on, he thinks its adorable 

☆  Johnny calls you “kid, little one, bug, and doll”

☆ He loves taking you to the park. He thinks its cute when you let him push you on the swings and sit on his lap as you go down the slide 

☆ If the two of you are at the curtis house and you get sleepy he kinda tucks you into his  jacket so you can  sleep 

Dally: 

☆ Dally Winston is- well- He is a protective caregiver, but he also needs help with it sometimes. Its not to say he is a bad caregiver he just wants to understand your needs better cause he doesn't wanna mess anything up with you 

☆ It takes him a little bit to get used to being a caregiver but when he does, he secretly enjoys doing it 

☆ He obviously gives you his necklace to fidget with (and so people know to leave you alone)

☆ He also gives you his jacket to wear ( He adores you in it ) 

☆ He has a space in his room that his hides your regression gear in  

☆ Dally always has an arm around you, he wants to make sure that people dont mess with you and so you dont get lost- 

☆ When its late at night and the two of you are in his room he loves when you  play with his hair  

☆ He calls you kiddo, baby, little one, baby doll, doll, and short stack ( it dosent matter if your taller than him he still dose)  

Two-bit 

☆ Two bit is such a good and fun caregiver ngl- 

☆ he is always watching mickey mouse in the curtis house anyways so when he found out you were a little he obviously let you watch with him 

☆ I personally head cannon that he is really good with younger ages and toddlers-   

☆ He gets you a shirt to match his ( he calls you the minnie to his mickey )  

☆ He defiantly buys you art supplies- and when he dose he loves to color with you  

☆ OMG man is the definition of tickle monster- He dose it because he loves hearing you laugh  

☆ He calls you minnie, kiddo, bug, little one, and baby 

Steve:

☆ Steve like dally needs a little help at first being a cg but when he gets it done he is a pretty good one 

☆ Steve loves carrying you and giving you piggyback rides 

☆ He takes you in his car to the diner or if your having trouble sleeping he drives you around at night with the raido on low to try and help you fall asleep 

☆ you are the ONLY one allowed to mess with his hair, He takes a lot of pride in his hair so he lets you play with it to show that he loves and trust you  

☆ When steve has to work he brings you with him- He lets you sit on the chair while he fixes up the cars and proably ask you to bring some tools for him while he tells funny stories 

☆  He calls you kiddo, babydoll, Prince(ss), and pumpkin 

☆ He knows not to give you sugar late but sometimes he cant help it, who else is he gonna share his chocolate cake with. He also thinks its cute when you  let him feed it to you

Strong, stoic, silent-type.

Three words used to describe one Curtis Everett around the office. He didn't talk much, got on with his work, but when push came to shove he was an excellent team-leader. Generally well-liked amongst his colleagues (or as well-liked as a someone who barely spoke to anyone else in the office).

Spritely, sociable, sunshine-personified.

Three words to describe one Y/N L/N around the office. A certified yapper who went out of their way to help their team and colleagues. Adored in the office and regarded highly amongst peers for their kindness and ability to make the best out of a bad situation.

So imagine the look on your friends' faces when you'd explained you'd gotten Curtis as your secret Santa.

"I don't know what to get him!" You whined, banging your fist into the pillow in your lap. The other held your swaying wine glass. It was wine night at your friend Aisha's and Ransom had brought out the expensive stuff when you admitted you were having a dilemma at work. "We're like fire and ice - polar opposites!"

"That's what this is about?" Ransom huffed, sipping his own glass. "A secret Santa?"

"Yeah, I thought there'd be a little more gossip." Aisha chimed in. "Like, an office crush or something."

"Well..." You raise your eyebrows at them both, feeling heat crawl up your face in thick tendrils. "He is kinda cute."

Ransom scoffs and Aisha demands pictures but the only one you can find is last year's blurry office Christmas photo. Aisha and Ransom both glare at you and you give them a sheepish shrug.

"Look I need ideas, guys." You plead helplessly.

"Just get him socks like everyone else." Ransom waves a hand dismissively.

"I can't do that. Its a 20 dollar limit, imagine having 10 pairs of socks"

"He's probably going to get whoever he's got a voucher or gift card." Aisha shrugs. "I wouldn't think too much about it."

You grumble and the conversation shifts. But you continue to think about it, even when you're tucked up in bed that night. You have to get him something good.

The office Christmas party was in full swing.

Music blared from somebody's phone and the spiked punch was making the rounds as the picking foods got dished out between desks. Chatter was lively and joyful - no mention of work or the plans for new year that involved budgets and clients.

Presents had already been dished out due to excitement, apart from two. Yours and Curtis's. Not that either of you had minded, you were both chatting and helping set everything up. Curtis by moving desks and you organising the food set up.

"What are the odds?" You chuckle, handing him a plastic cup of spiked punch with Ba Humbug written along the side. Your bag was draped over your forearms, carrying your expertly sourced gift.

Curtis takes the cup with a nod of thanks. "I know. Please don't expect too much. I... didn't know what to get you." Curtis admits awkwardly, handing you a small, hastily wrapped present. "I um... got some help."

You set your own cup down and rip at the packaging. Tipping the paper, a beautiful necklace spills out; silver with a blue gem of some kind set in the middle.

"It's... gorgeous. I-" you blink at the necklace. You were expecting a voucher of some kind but this was making your heart swell. "Are you sure this was only twenty dollars?"

"Pretty sure." He chuckles. "I can ask Jensen's niece to help you pick out another set if you don't like them?"

You bite back a giggle as ypur heart rate settles again. You'd seen enough pictures and heard stories of the tenacious nine year old niece of your favourite IT Tech to know that she probably would jump at the chance to help out. And the thought of Curtis asking Jensen's niece to help him made your heart melt all the more.

"How did Jake keep it a secret all this time?" You ask, casting a glance to the man himself. Jensen was busy arguing about children's soccer with one of your other colleagues, wearing an elf christmas sweater and a bright purple paper party hat that sat on the top of his spikey hair. If there was anyone to challenge your title of Office Yapper it would be him.

"Honestly? That's a Christmas Miracle in itself." Curtis says and smiles a little when you laugh.

You unclasp the necklace and turn your back to Curtis. "Come on, help me put it on!"

Curtis nods, his fingers brushing yours as he takes the chain. The metal is cool against the heat of your skin and you suppress a shiver as Curtis clasps it. You turn back to him, fiddling with the gem between your fingers.

"Well?"

"Well?..." Curtis swallows when your eyes meet his and you beam at him. Sunshine.

"How does it look?"

He wants to say that it looks as good as any Claire's jewellery does but the warmth blossoming in his chest stops him. He wants you to have a better necklace than this. He wants to be the one to give it to you.

"Beautiful." He says quietly, cheeks slightly flush.

You reach into your bag and pull out a brightly wrapped present with about five bows on it. It's wrapped perfectly and Curtis bites back a smile. Of course you would be perfect at wrapping presents.

"It's not as nice as the necklace," you say looking a little embarassed. "But I was dead against getting you socks!"

Carefully peeling back the wrapping Curtis peeks inside, his smile going from a corner-twitch into a full, toothy grin that made your heart stutter.

"My favourite candy bar?" He rumbles, picking one out of your precarious wrapping. "These are hard to find."

"I got a few other flavours too. Just for funsies." You shrug, looking pleased with yourself. Curtis wasn't just cute when he smiled. He was radiant.

"Thanks," Curtis nods and then looks over at you. "You know, I can't eat all of these myself."

You shift on your feet and give him a cheeky smile. "Are you offering me some?"

Curtis shrugs nonchalantly, but still smiles. "Maybe. If you can eat one with me say... over coffee on Monday?"

"I think I could manage that." You beam. Whoever said office Christmas parties were bad?

I’ve hit 3000 followers!!!

Now if you remember a while ago I asked how you guys would like to celebrate and this is what I’ve come up with! If you remember my 2.5k Followers Writing Challenge and Exchange its kinda similar to that but I’ve made some improvements!

What is going to happen is I am going to open up my askbox/dms for requests!

To make this manageable and allow me to complete as many as possible I will only be accepting requests in these following forms:

2) A What If…. For one of my series

The most heart-warming thing Steve teaches you is the hug. So simple. So reminiscent of your first meeting. If you lay your head on his chest, your face can remain underwater to breathe and hold onto Steve indefinitely, and he's tried. The longest he's gone is five straight hours of just you two holding each other, brushing his thumb over your cheek, giving you soft back rubs, getting gentle back scratches from you, and loving every second. This is an ultra specific pick based entirely off of the fic "And That’s Why We Broke Up" by @dominimoonbeam (your writing is >>>). I get that it's canon divergence, I get that this ship ain't for everyone, I get that I'm 99% certain it'd never happen in canon. That doesn't change the fact that this is 100% what I think of when I think about this pairing in the context of this fic.

Beginning of the song reminds me of Elliott showing Sunshine dreams dreamscapes and stuff. That mixed with the friends to lovers vibes from the beginning of their relationship/dynamic and overall energy this song has made it fit for me.

[Alexis/Sam] (LET ME EXPLAIN /LH)

This ship isn't for me and I debated adding it at all, but this is one of the first songs I thought to add for this. I think it absolutely fits from Alexis' perspective and, if you view her as a more complex character rather than one dimension, it makes you hurt in a "It is what it is but damn" kind of way. Especially the line "strangers to friends, friends into lovers, then strangers again". Like come on, it fucks me up to imagine that pain after everything that transpired between her and Sam.

Sunshine Finding Out About Her Parents

Sunshine finds out about her parents’ death the same way the rest of the Curtis’ family does; a knock on their front door in the middle of the night. Darry is the one who answers the door while Soda, Pony, and Sunny all poke their heads out of their rooms to see what’s wrong. The policeman is the one who tells Darry, trying to keep himself upright against the doorframe, while his siblings slowly come into the living room trying to understand what’s going on. Eventually they’re all led to the couch while the officer explains the situation again before he leaves. The four of them sitting in the dimly light living room, unsure of what to say or what is going to happen, but knowing that they’re all each other, have left. 

Sunshine can’t sleep alone for weeks. She starts getting anxiety attacks when it gets dark and she can’t stand to be in a room without a light source. She keeps going to Darry’s room and can only sleep if he’s with her. They’ve always been close ever since she was a baby and now he’s the closest thing she has to her dad. Darry keeps the door to his room cracked and leaves the hall light on. 

Sunshine hates when people knock on the front door. Thankfully it doesn’t happen often since Darry leaves it unlocked and the Gang just lets themselves in, but there have been a few times when Two Bit or Dally jokingly knocked on the front door with both fists before slamming it open with their usual burst of energy and Sunny’s face was completely pale and she had to go sit down somewhere else.

She doesn’t cry at the funeral even when Ponyboy and Sodapop do. She just holds onto Soda and Darry’s hands and waits for the service to be over. When they get home she locks herself in her bedroom and finally cries. She doesn’t want her brothers to worry about her, she knows they’re all sad enough already. When she comes out later she tries to hide the red in her eyes and her brothers are kind enough to not say anything about it. 

When Ponyboy starts getting his nightmares she’s incredibly freaked out and loses a lot of sleep because not even sleep is safe apparently. She doesn’t want Ponyboy to get worse, she knows Darry is taking on too much already, and Soda is playing peacemaker. This is when she starts taking care of the house and making sure it’s as perfect as can be to help everyone feel better. 

There was a day when the brothers couldn’t find Sunshine and they began to panic. She wasn’t in Darry’s room or her own, she wasn’t on the porch, and they all knew that Sunny wouldn’t leave the house without telling one of them first. They searched and searched before Soda noticed that the door to their parents’ room was slightly ajar. There had been an unspoken rule that no one was supposed to go in there, not yet, but there was Sunny curled up in the middle of their bed fast asleep. 

There’s a headcanon that I’ve seen a lot of fans share about the Curtis Brothers being scared of getting into cars or driving in general and I share that 100%. I don’t think there’s a way that they wouldn’t on some level carry a deep fear or at least anxiety of vehicles. For Sunshine it’s not so much being in a car as it is seeing her brothers or the gang into a car. She cannot stand the thought of them all getting into one without her and leaving her behind. Even months after the accident she gets deep pits of anxiety in her stomach. 

The first time they laugh together since their parents’ death is two weeks after the funeral. Sunshine helped Darry make breakfast, tired bags under both of their eyes, and everyone was sitting at the table. Sunny can’t remember what was said, but it made Soda choke on his chocolate milk and in a blink of an eye it was coming out of his nose. They all started at the mess on the table and on his shirt before the silence broke and laughter filled the Curtis home for the first time in far too long.

He grabbed his phone leaning back in his chair as he unlocked the phone. Chuckling to himself when he saw you had sent him clips from your favourite movie ‘Playing it Cool’. You had the day off so were watching again. The clips were definitely very funny, but his favourite part was hearing you giggling along.

He fired back a quick reply before putting his phone down. As he glances back up, he spots Tanya watching him through the window, an eyebrow raised at him in a knowing look. He huffs in annoyance as she pushes her way into the office.

“What is your problem” she states hands on her hips as she looked over at him.

“Don’t know what you’re talking about, don’t you have a bike to fix up?” Curtis huffs looking at his computer screen, avoiding her gaze.

“Stop bullshitting me Everett, I know exactly who you were texting from that goofy smile on your face” Tanya states pointing down at his phone.

“I didn’t have a goofy smile” Curtis grumbles, frowning as he finally glanced up.

“Yes, you did, there’s no point in denying it, in all the years I’ve known you I’ve never seen you so happy, so why the hell haven’t you asked her out yet” Tanya states her voice softening slightly.

“Because even if I wanted to, there’s no way she’d say yes” Curtis states harshly, shaking his head as he looked down, fingers running over his beard.

“Why on earth do you think that?” Tanya asks shaking her head in disbelief.

“Because it’s obvious! Look at her, she’s literally like sunshine and rainbows, and I’m this” he says gesturing down at his dark and grey appearance “we’re polar opposites, she wouldn’t want this” he sighs.

“Ever heard of opposites attract?” Tanya says earning a scoff from Curtis.

Just at that exact moment his phone buzzed again on the desk. Your name flashing across the screen once more. Curtis holding back a smile.

“That’s her, isn’t it?” Tanya smirks nodding down to his phone.

Curtis doesn’t respond, giving Tanya the answer she needed.

“Look Curtis, you clearly don’t see it but she is head over heels for you, ever since you fixed up her Dougie and she brought you those cookies, if she wasn’t interested she wouldn’t have come with us to the axe throwing or the open mic night, but she won’t wait forever so you need to grow a pair and ask her out” Tanya sighs as Curtis glances up at her.

“Where’s the Curtis that stood up against Wilford and put him in his place? Hm?” Tanya says moving round the desk to perch on the edge.

“That was different” Curtis sighs shaking his head.

“Yeah it was far worse because you didn’t know what the outcome would be, but this time you do because she’ll definitely say yes” Tanya tells him.

Curtis sighs as he thinks it over. He couldn’t deny what Tanya was saying.

“I’ll think about it” Curtis concedes with a sigh dropping his hand from his chin.

A lopsided grin appears on Tanya’s face as she stands up “good, I can’t wait for my invite to the wedding” she smirks making her way out of the office.

Curtis lets out a small huff of a laugh “don’t get ahead of yourself” he warns as the door shuts behind her.

A/N: I couldn’t get straight to them finally getting together without giving curtis’ reasons why he was holding back first!! It will be happening soon though... its just a matter of who asks who....
