so i get it - i really do - that it's always sunny is THE terrible people comedy show, even moreso than arrested development or seinfeld or what we do in the shadows. but i'm rewatching seinfeld right now and it does strike me how much easier it is to watch elaine than to watch dee.
and it's not a perfect parallel. the mistreatment of dee in the narrative is very intentional and, in a way, realistic but putting the only woman of the main cast at the bottom of the food chain makes it so insidious and often straight-up uncomfortable.
elaine benes is a failwoman. she's terrible at a lot of things. she makes a fool out of herself.
but there's no doubt that she's on equal footing with the rest of the main cast. there's an equal distribution of her playing the voice of reason (while making it still funny, jld there's sOMETHING about your comedic skills that's just unique) and her coming out on the bottom and being a dork.
and in iasip, it makes sense, i'm not disputing that. the gang is wildly sexist. they hate women in a way that the seinfeld gang didn't - their flavor of misogyny was much less intentioned and mostly bio-essentialist which is... you know, it's less than ideal but it makes it a lot less violent. iasip aims for the uncomfortable.
but. more than anyone dee has to pretty much ALWAYS lose. where other members of the gang are given wins, dee's story is not only a tragedy, it's a constant, excruciating dunk that never, everrrr lets up.
i would argue that they had the opportunity to make dee an exception by going the "but you're not really one of them" route. there was even the option to have more than one woman in the main cast, therefore not subjecting women in general to this treatment all the time, without a break, ever. and i think an elaine is an excellent example on an alternative.

Tuesday's 3.3 mile park jaunt. The 'comeback' is always a little raggedy, but every slow mile is worth it, my heart soars. I'm not coughing anymore! The March sun is full of warm hope-- have a good day luvs!

*CYCLONE UPDATE*
With Cyclone Alfred just being announced to be 100% hitting Brisbane late Thursday or early Friday and flooding and power outages predicted I think I should probably say now that I may disappear for up to a week.
Our home is on a hill so the combination of storm surge (7m waves apparently), king tide, 700mm of rain and the dam releases to cope with that (lol it really is everything at once) won't be a danger to us. We'll probably be cut off but otherwise fine. This isn't our first flood.
We're being told to expect "destructive winds, in excess of 95kph and gusts over 130kph for places close to the cyclones eye" and we're not sure how big the eye is or what counts as close to it but we're making plans to keep the toddlers with us at night and maybe even all camp out in the living room - which is more protected than upstairs.
We've got plenty of food and torches, and so the power outage should be more annoying than anything else.
I'll try pop on and post a little 'we're safe' update after the worst is past.
But, uh, yeah, I'll probably disappear from online within 48 hours from now and there definitely won't be any new chapter this week or the next.

Its a little shocking to see people willingly support erdogan in arab countries. Makes no sense to me. People say it's a sunni thing (which I can see why they say it) but I grew up in a sunni environment and my family all hated him and similar "sunni" leaders. I think my family was just different. I don't think any of my sunni friends were pro erdogan but I could be wrong.
