chapter 1 - spotify playlists - chapter 17

Med-Tek ended in failure - RJ is shattered. Jack Ward, Sole Survivor of Vault 111, pushes him onto a vertibird in search of Plan B - a remote Vault once plagued by Duncan’s illness. After two weeks of kicking RJ's ass, Olivia Dallaire - a sniper just as talented and cranky as he is - agrees to move to Boston. Her presence forces both Jack and RJ to face problems they can no longer outrun: How do they move on from survivors’ guilt (and be the men Olivia needs them to be) when the Wasteland only seems to tear families apart?

RJ and Olivia are not in the mood to party. The only thing Jack wants to do (aside from fulfill Nora's last wish) is clear the tension between them- Even if it takes a village.

This chapter examines a lot: a flashback to one of Jack and Nora's last conversations touches on wartime US law and her upbringing in West Virginia during F76's portrayal of conflict between mining companies and the unions; the reason why Jack had such strong paternal feelings for Olivia is contextualized. RJ and Livvie are all but forced to confront each other. It's a long one at 13,277 words- Snippet below!

"Well, I'm from West Virginia, may I remind you," said Nora, indignant. "When the Garrahans and Hornwrights brought the robots in, they stole so much more from us than just jobs. The only time in my life I saw my dad cry was when they turned on the Rockhound and drilled into Mount Blair. If we had robots on the farm, no matter how much easier it would have made things, the mining union boys would have set our land on fire for scabbing. And after the union lost and the cloud stopped breaking over Welch and everyone started gettin' sludge lung, they still refused robots even when a couple Miss Nannies could have made the clinic lines shorter,"

"I know, babe, I didn't mean it like that-"

"Some of the people we grew up around were right about robots for the right reasons, but sometimes they were wrong about a whole lot else," she continued. "I mean, I caught all kinds of hell when I got out and went to Baltimore instead of stayin' and.. Some people I grew up with have to put on gas masks to go outside just so they can go get high in a shack somewhere in the mountains, you know that?"

"Yeah, and I'm not snorting Buffout on a construction site in Brookline with fake union papers like some of the guys I knew, but-"

"But what, Jack? We made it- We get to afford things like a house and babies and we don't have to buy the cheapest store-brand soup for dinner, and.." she threw her hand up. "And we can afford Codsworth. I know you don't like him yet, but we could really use his help while I'm at work!"

"Hey, I can do all the stuff he can- And things are pretty tight, I mean, we're lucky I won enough purses to afford this place, and even that barely cut it. I can work- I bet I still have a couple good fights in me. And, the Army keeps sending me mail about civilian positions, which would pay more than the pension, so why don't I-"

"Absolutely not. You retired from boxing on a high note, and you stopped before they lifted the drug prohibition. I'm not watching you get dragged back in only to get concussed by some 'roided-out kid on the come up. And the Army'll see you're power armor trained and ship you back to Anchorage. I need you home, Jack, my heart can't take it-"

"I'm not going anywhere- I did my mandatory. They're gonna have to try real hard to make me go on a second tour."

"Jack, the way the world is today, I just.. I just want my family as close to home as possible. I don't trust that you won't be lied to and forced to go back to the front. If things get worse, I don't want us spread out all over the world. They're building that Vault up the hill, and-"

"Oh, not the Vault thing again, c'mon- It might be a huge waste of-"

"A huge waste of money? Guaranteein' my family's safety will never be a waste of money,"

"Okay, fine, fine. I get it." Jack ran his hand through his hair and sighed. "I agree, but.. I feel really guilty that I'm sitting on my ass watching cartoons with Shaun all day while you're working as hard as you are. And Codsworth's doing everything I could be doing. I asked to split chores and he looked at me with his, his fuckin', ten eyes like I was crazy. I wanna provide for my family too, y'know?"

"You provide for us every day, Jack," she placed her hand on his cheek. "After everything life's put you through, the only job you have is to rest and be the best daddy to my babies that you can be."

"But it's not enough, Nora," he pleaded. "The sooner I get a job, the sooner we can bring our baby girl home!"

"She's gonna be here before we know it, whether that's a year from now or five."

"But you said you wished you could fast forward. Isn't me getting a job kind of like pressing the fast forward button?"

"Maybe, maybe not. Adoption's about more than having the money. We might be ready with a new house and the whole works for a few years before we're approved."

Exhausted, Jack put his arms around his wife and buried his face in her hair.

"I know, I just.. I want to give you everything you want,"

"You do," she rested her cheek against his chest.

"I-I don't know. I feel like I'm never getting it quite right. I hate feeling like there's always something out of reach. Y'know, sometimes, I wish I could just go out and kidnap a baby from the hospital, and-"

"Jack Atticus Ward, you wouldn't dare,"

"Well, if it makes my wife happy, fuck it-"

"Not at the expense of someone else's family, Jack,"

"I know, I know. I don't mean it. I mean- If you wanted me to, I'd do it."

They paused and held each other as the laundry machine rumbled.

"Tell me what to do," Jack mumbled. "Please tell me what needs to happen next."

LOW TIDE (2019) Grade: C+

Clever plot and good production value. Could have had more mystery surrounding it. Some characters don't get flushed out enough. Ending was a let down. Still a good indie film.

i know we’re all grieving the end of mentopolis but all i can think about is the potential for a second season.

like we return to the mind of elias hodge and everyone is so happy, everyone is living their best lives. conrad’s gotten a massive growth spurt, dan’s still running things from behind the scenes (as he does) with some help from his brothers in the balls, anastasia is finally getting the recognition (and attention..) she deserves as the new mayor, imelda and lance are in a lovely open marriage (both becoming eager investors in one thalamus and sons), hunch never runs out of mysteries to solve, and the wayward interests aren’t so wayward anymore, thanks to pasha and the fix.

and elias is so happy. he’s working a new and better job, finally helping to make the world a better place and watching gobstopper industries fall apart, from a safe distance of course. he’s with his coffee shop girl. maybe they’re married now, maybe they’ve got a kid coming along soon, but no matter what, they’re so happy together.

at this point, the prohibition is a distant memory, and mentopolis is sunny and full of serotonin and endorphins and life.

but it just all starts to fall apart out of nowhere. elias has a target on his back. the psychometer was going to be gobstopper’s big moneymaker. they were never going to let him get away with it. and, sure, the whole company’s probably getting shut down, and most of their higher-ups might be locked up, but what’s stopping them getting back at the guy that did this to them? they could pay their ways out and just cut their losses, rebuild it all from scratch if they can, but do they really seem like the types to do that? they’ll hold a grudge, and they’re going to start all over again with the same evil bullshit and make back the money elias lost them, but they’re going to make sure he never gets in the way again.

seconding this by the description of tim's eyes being the same way as the 'nothing. and nothing hurt' that keeps popping up in rtd.

"his whole thing is love, right?" you GET IT! his whole thing IS love! i can't see him as anything other than the witness at this point, even if pbr!witness is extremely different and Much Wetter than the original rtd!witness. him witnessing gerry's death in here is actually just fucking awful because he'd subsist on it in a very specific way; the arrangement renders it a suicide just as much as a murder. writing him this broken was so painful but so satisfying djhfkjdf tim is a worthy favorite to have! he's always been my favorite of the original archives crew, if it wasn't Blatantly Obvious by how much we center him LMAO.

2. pink! is the jon honesty color! yes!!!! he's been quite forthright this whole time i think, they're all really just. wondering what the point would be in anything else.

2b. i neeeeded that anachronism there so badly, just. it's a bright summer day! it's never actually raining or dreary when things like this happen (unless you recall that it was raining in venice when tim was drowned. that time it rained.) but generally, the world goes on. i think... i also just wanted that sunny day to be a little reminder of the kind of person gerry was at his core. symbolism etc etc.

3. i was SOOOO STUMPED ON MELANIE for a WHILE before i remembered she was a youtuber and then i exploded on the spot. her video is titled "the long overdue absolution of gerard keay" and she works for six months to make it perfect and it gets a lot of bad attention and skeptics but mostly condolences and maybe even a few people who had their own experiences but didn't recognize who he was until they saw a picture of him smiling. she'd include selfies they'd taken together as proof of her knowing him. i'm crying a little.

4. sasha losing a sister is a phrase i had a hard time with because there are so many ways to read it, like. that was her best friend's wife, and so kind of her sister that way, but also just. a sister. no more estrogen. no more joy.

4b. divshah is a sweet and thoughtful little bee girl and i am so sorry to her forever because people definitely make fun of her but GERRY NEVER DID! GERRY NEVER DID!

4c. sasha reverse witnessing tim GUHHHH yep! yep! her whole corruption thing is about grief, too, it crosses lines! they all have to do with loss in one way or another!

tim's eyes also hurt me like hi mr. spooky man maybe work on that a little bit please g-d you're gonna scare a small child like that. very good connection to rtd though you are NAILING IT and i am over the MOON.

danny crying is extremely important to me for that reason too yes g-d. like. all the other men cried in this, too (especially tim YIKES, MAN) but something about letting danny just weep openly and in such a human way felt like. g-d he's needed this for such a long time. so much longer than anybody is able to count. he needed to let that out and be held through it and he needed to accept that comfort and it's not the first time, really! i try not to be too restrained with letting characters cry because there are a thousand reasons that somebody might like, feel good about seeing it just play out naturally and without shame.

Royal Family: Round 1, Part 3

Prince Peter invites another peasant girl over to the castle. He seems to not want to associate with anyone in his standing.

Emmota and Jasper sneak away to the queen's luxurious bathroom to...um...cuddle.

The Royal Ball for Prince Armin's 18th birthday is underway! The Earl's family, the Brewers, and the Sherrif are all in attendance.

And Prince Peter remains attracted ONLY to peasant girls. To be fair, I don't have any teens in nobility, but it's still funny. I had him flirt with the Sherrif's daughter, who is closer to him in class standing, and he was repulsed by her.

aaaaand Prince Armin immediately goes into aspiration failure upon aging up before I can even change his appearance (ft. sim manipulator ready to go in the background lmao). He's really upset that he didn't go to university. This week on I Am In Deep Despair Over Something I Don't Know Exists!

Now that he's wearing appropriate attire...he is still crying. Okay, okay, I get it. I'll build a university. We'll name it Prince Armin's college. Okay? Want a cookie? [Though tbh i just haven't built the university because I just wanted to get to playing and also sunni's medieval university replacements were weirdly shiny and glowing??? so i just didnt want to deal LMAO]

NYC December 2023 - Part 1

[Updated to cover seven nights, December 19-25]

My winter music safari took me from New Orleans to Laguardia on Tuesday, December 19. I arrived at Mona's just a bit after the jam started. Here's the video - credit Dennis Lichtman. Fast forward to the music, 9 minutes:

On Wednesday night I had the amazing good fortune to catch both sets at Smoke. From L to R, the band was Emmet Cohen, Jon Webber, the great George Coleman, Joe Farnsworth and Peter Bernstein.

In the first set, my seat was right by Joe Farnsworth's left elbow.

I definitely have a better understanding of jazz drumming than I used to have. And I got some great shots from that angle.

I had a better view for the second set.

This was probably my best photo of the night.

The music was bebop, not quite in my sweet spot. But it was absolutely delightful. Each of these guys is a master craftsman and inspired artist.

On Thursday, I ventured out to far Red Hook, to Sunny's Bar to hear Samoa Wilson sing. To my pleasant surprise, she was backed by Michaela Gomez, who I have not seen since before the pandemic, on guitar, and Brian Nalepka on bass.

Michaela's guitar work was strong. Samoa's singing was a perfect match for the jazz standards she sang.

On Friday night, I went to hear Jeanne Geis at Frankie and Johnny's on 37th. Her band consisted of Joe Cohn (guitar), with Mark Lewandowski (bass) and Paul Bollenback (guitar).

Joe Cohn is the father of Shaye Cohn from Tuba Skinny.

I had not seen Jeanne in many years.

I hadn't seen her in many years. Listening to an old friend sing, sitting on the corner of the bar, chatting with a few other friendly jazz fans. It felt familiar and comfortable.

On Saturday night, I went to hear Tatiana Eva-Marie at The Whitby Hotel on 56th Street. She was flawlessly accompanied by Paul Sikivie on Bass and Felix Lemerle on guitar.

Sunday,December 24 began with a trip downtown to hear Tamar Korn's brunch gig at the Temple Court. It's not a temple or a court. It's a hotel, with a delicious, expensive brunch.

The band, L to R, is Sam Chess (trombone), Jared Engel (bass) and Josh Dunn (guitar). The music was stunningly well-executed. Tamar's version of "Do the New York," which is usually kickass, was restrained by the genteel surroundings.

The usual Sunday evening jam at The Ear was typically excellent.

That's Tal Ronen (bass), Jay Rattman (sax), Chris Flory (guitar) and Jon Erik Kellso (trumpet).

Neal and his friends, Dr. Janet Sora Chung and Joe Jones (bassoon, not drums) enjoyed the show.

Musician friends Brennen Ernst and Jen Hodge were at the bar . . .

. . . until Maestro Kellso invited them to play a few tuned. They both leaned in with serious energy.

In the foreground, that's Phillup Debucket - a major supporter of the band. Phillup eagerly accepted my input.

On Christmas Day, Monday, December 25, Neal Siegal and I got the best seats in the house for Tamar's reprise Temple Court gig. It was a new lineup.

That's Tal Ronen (bass), Tomas Majcherski (tenor, clarinet), Jared Engel (4-string, 3-cone, resophonic not-a-banjo), and Tamar, vocals.

I never heard Tomas Majcherski play before. His playing was delightful and deep.

Tamar's singing seems to capture the rapt attention of the youngest listeners. I've seen it before. Now I've got a photo:

Neal and I spent the entire rest of the day looking for the great music, but a strange hush had descended on New York . . .
