See, what bothers me about Smithers' "evolution" is that his love for Burns begins to have conditions. It becomes selfish and based on what Burns does or doesn't do for him, rather than a pure and unconditional love of who Burns is. And I hate it. I HATE IT

I know the writers did it out of respect for queers, that the writer has a gay son and wanted to paint Smithers in more of a "positive" light, but it completely obliterated their relationship.

It seems like writers are focusing more on Smithers being a positive gay icon than a person that's in love with Burns. I, as a bisexual man, liked the character as he was -- the changes actually offend me. And it's really a disservice to Burns. I don't wonder why he became crueler and colder to Smithers over time. The way Smithers is now written triggers ALLLLL of Burns's defense mechanisms. Smithers makes Burns feel like he HAS to push him away and be distant just to preserve what remains of their relationship.

I hope in time that the writers manage to fix this. They've been focusing so much on Smithers' morals that it makes it very difficult. Burns is EVIL, that's not going to change. (I know Burns can be very soft too, but his darkness isn't going to go away. It's a part of him, he relies on it. And Smithers no longer accepts it. And that's just going to make Burns feel unlovable.) So it's a tough situation.

I liked it better when Smithers was doing Burns's dirty work, way back in the beginning -- he was actually pretty wicked, himself.
