✨: they're all named after the colours they're based off of 😭 (Carmine, Amber, Sunny, Sage, Azure, Periwinkle) but I changed Carmine's name from Ember to Carmine cause I just wasn't feeling Ember anymore, but the name is very close to my heart.

🌼: Carmine is 17. Amber is 16 (almost 17). Sunny is 15 (almost 16). Sage is 16 (just turned). Azure is 14. Periwinkle is 18(just turned).

🌺: Sage and Carmine are girlfriends (started dating late book 2). Amber and Sunny are boyfriends (pined throughout book 1 and started dating at the end) and both had prior failed romances. Azure and Periwinkle are queer platonic and aro ace, but Periwinkle used to have a girlfriend named Diana who is unfortunately dead.

🍕: I've don't this one already but again! Carmine likes fancy ramen and udon. Amber likes fries and granola bars. Sunny likes sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies. Sage likes fancy salads. Azure likes anything. Periwinkle likes pasta.

💼: only Periwinkle has a job, and she works 2 jobs. Her mom died when she was 14 and she didn't want to go to the system so she made a living for herself.

🎹: Carmine likes axe throwing. Amber likes dancing and listening to music. Sunny is an artist that likes all medias, but especially oil paint. Sage likes embroidery and gardening. Azure likes reading, beachcombing, and swimming. Periwinkle likes reading and nail art.

🎯: For Carmine, it's arson. She always gets away with it. For Amber, it's fashion. He's the gay friend of a gay friend group. For Sunny, it's painting. He makes good money from commissions. For Sage, it's gardening. She somehow always grows the best crops and flowers. For Azure, it's beachcombing. They'll just casually give someone a real pearl they found and not think twice about it. For Periwinkle, it's debating. She always wins, somehow.

🥊: Carmine loves doing fitness and hates doing anything overly feminine. It always feels forced for her. Amber loves being around others and hates thinking about food or eating. Sunny loves being alone and doing shit tons of art, and he hates talking to people for too long. He just wants to sit alone and paint until he's shaking with fatigue. Sage loves doing anything with nature, digging her fingers in the dirt and scraping her hands climbing trees. She hates any kind of conflict. Azure loves just being near the ocean, feeling sand on their feet, listening to the waves. They don't exactly hate anything. Periwinkle loves being right and she hates losing things. She's lost too much already.

❤️: For Carmine, it's any moment from their childhood with Amber. Everything was so awful that those bright moments shone like diamonds. For Amber, it's dancing in New York city with Sunny, since it was pre-relationship and they were so in love and had no idea, it just makes him feel fuzzy. For Sunny, it's the days he sat with his friend group on the field, eating lunch and talking shit. They're still close friends, but things have changed. For Sage, it's gardening with her birth mother. They had to separate when Sage was young due to mental health issues that needed to be addressed before she could be a parent, but Sage still likes the memories she has of her. For Azure, it's being taught ASL and literature by Sage and Periwinkle, since it was the first time they really bonded. For Periwinkle, it's her first date with Diana, since Diana was so nervous and sweet and they did so many fun things together.

✂️: For Carmine, it was feeling helpless under the abuse she faced. She didn't like not being able to do anything about her pain. For Amber, it's the bullying. He'd given up on his parents early on, but to be hated by his peers as well was horrible for him. For Sunny, it's the sexual abuse he went through. Sure, he got paid, and he eventually talked to his abuser and got closure, but it's still his worst memory. For Sage, it's finding her adoptive mother's body. She doesn't even know what killed her. For Azure, it's when their mother used a knife on them. They knew she lost control and that it wasn't her fault, but it still hurt. For Periwinkle, it's losing Diana. Diana was the one who helped her through her mother's death, and losing her was just the nail in the coffin.

🧊: All the characters used to be younger. Carmine's hair used to be straighter and they used to be more of a flirt. Amber used to have terrible, bland fashion and shorter hair. Sunny used to be ginger with short curly hair and was the successor of emotions rather than weather and air (so glad I changed that). Sage got a scarf in her hair and that's it, she also got more tough. Azure is pretty much the same, just sillier. Periwinkle was going to be the successor of justice and law, but I changed her to be the successor of the mind and that which we don't understand. I also used to be stuck on her hair like I had no idea what I wanted to do for it.

🍀: a dream I had actually! I wrote down the characters and have been building them ever since.

🌂: urban fantasy adventure YA? With action and found family?

💚: Carmine is genderqueer and sapphic, she uses they/she and doesn't really like labels. Amber is gay and uses he/him and doesn't label his gender because he doesn't care. Sunny is all about labels, he's a caedsexual panromantic demiboy and uses he/they. Sage is a transfemme lesbian and uses she/her. Azure is aro ace non-binary and uses they/them. Periwinkle is an aro ace woman and uses she/her.

🙌: Carmine and Amber are siblings. No one else has siblings, but Sunny and Sage each have cousins they're really close to.

🍎: for Carmine, BAD. For Amber, BAD. For Sunny, actually amazing, he loves both his parents and his grandparents. For Sage, it's complicated. She never met her birth father, her birth mother had to give Sage to the system since she was unfit to be a mother at the time due to severe schizophrenia, anxiety and depression. She was adopted by a couple in which the wife was being abused by the husband and ended up being killed by the husband, but she had a good relationship with the wife. She ends up reuniting with her birth mom and has a good relationship with her. Azure never met their father and was abused by their mom before she committed. Periwinkle also never met her father but had a good relationship with her mother before she died.

🧠: I like Carmine for a few reasons, mainly because her character is so in depth and she has a good design. I like Amber because he's silly and fun to draw and is an advocate for the "dress however the fuck you want" movement. I like Sunny because I kin him deeply. I like Sage because she has a nice design and she's very sunshiny. I like Azure because they're extremely fun to write. I like Periwinkle because she's everything I wish I could be.

✏️: I'm in a year long writer's block but I'm always drawing them and doing picrews of them!

💎: I've done enough killing off! Also the main six eventually become semi-immortal (probably will live to a billion years)

💀: already answered but I'll do it again. Carmine is scared of the dark. Amber is scared of heights. Sunny is scared of spiders. Sage is scared of being alone. Azure is scared of failure. Periwinkle is scared of death.

🍩: for Carmine— honestly? The semi-immortal beings that are trying to be her parents. They're really nice and supportive but she has this thing where she Doesn't Trust People. For Amber it's either himself or his birth parents. For Sunny it was his abuser but they talked and now they have a complicated relationship in which Sunny doesn't forgive him but recognises his abuser's regret and dedication to being better. For Sage it's her adoptive father, she hates the guy for obvious reasons. Azure doesn't care enough but they're not fond of their mother. Periwinkle forgets but doesn't forgive. She hates people without remembering why.

she always felt as if she was too much for corbin. too bubbly. too sunny. simply too much. rae thought her personality could be overbearing for someone as muted as he was yet, with constant reminders, the redhead was well aware of his adoration for her. 

even when her friends convinced her to go talk to the handsome stranger at the bar, she couldn’t understand how she was able to make him crack a smile. 

“yes pretty.” 

now stained with a pink mark across her cheek, a giggle tumbled from her lips, taking note of the hint of affection slipping into his tone. 

“just like?” not love

corbin glanced down at the pink smudge rae had just added to his nose, his expression deadpan, though the faintest hint of a smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. he wasn’t one for outward displays of emotion, but she always had a way of breaking through his tough exterior. her laughter, light and full of life, contrasted sharply with the low, dark music playing from his phone, but it was a sound he’d never grow tired of.

he looked at her, eyes softening just a little as he shook his head. "pretty, huh?" his voice was gravelly, deep, the kind of tone that usually gave nothing away. "not really the look i’m going for."

but despite his words, there was no annoyance, no real bite in his response. if anything, he leaned into her teasing, enjoying the moment more than he’d ever admit. he reached out, swiping a finger across the pink blush on his nose before lightly smearing it across her cheek in retaliation.

“you’re lucky i like you,” he added, his voice dropping to a low rumble, though there was a warmth there now, one reserved just for her.

Pepper insisted she take the day off to settle in New Asgard and see the sights. 

Fallon fought the feeling of guilt that came with taking the time. She was meant to take over for Nancy, but so far, all she'd done was be the cause of all new problems. And now, with Jay back in the picture, she just wanted to hide and never come out.

But life didn't work that way. If she wanted her children to have some semblance of normalcy, Fallon had to do her part to give it to them. 

In that aspect, she dressed Corbin for the day, returned to Thor's bedroom and dressed in yesterday's jeans. They were surprisingly still clean as she hadn't been feeding her messy mini-mes diner and a sunny yellow sweater that constantly bared one shoulder or the other. 

It was supposedly trendy. She just hoped it wouldn't get annoying by the end of the day.

Then, with a cute pair of burgundy ankle boots she was damn sure weren't part of her wardrobe before, Fallon collected Corbin and headed downstairs. 

She had to stop herself from falling in love with their house.

Closing Argument

This post contains spoilers for Breaking Bad Season 6.

Those Better Call Saul writers are some cold-hearted bastards.

Just a few episodes after a central character was given a Christ-like ending (poor Nacho — betrayed by Gus before sacrificing himself to save his family), the writers of Better Call Saul succeeded in humanizing Howard Hamlin and made him a sympathetic character, only to immediately have him meet an ignominious end.

Redemption arcs never bode well for characters in Vince Gilligan's universe. I'm reminded of Grant Morrison's JLA: Earth Two graphic novel, which proposed the existence of a universe where "evil" always prevails. The arc of the Gilliganverse likewise bends towards corruption: Characters readily fall into drug dealing, theft, infidelity, fraud, and murder. They redeem themselves only to die shortly thereafter.

That tanned, well-dressed, golf-playing Howard Hamlin ended up being Saul Goodman's nemesis (instead of one of the show's many murderous thugs) is a cynical commentary from the show's creators; it also serves to differentiate this show from other lawyer-centric ones. On a different series, in a different era of television (before Tony Soprano paved the way for small screen antiheroes), Hamlin may well have been a title character. His name seems to be a deliberate nod to L.A. Law star Harry Hamlin, just as his blonde hair and expensive suits draw easy comparisons to the slick corporate lawyer played by Corbin Bernsen on the same show. But in the Gilliganverse, with its affable drug dealers and honorable cartel enforcers, Hamlin's glowing appearance and manicured charm made him suspect. When the title character drives around in a Suzuki Esteem with mismatched doors, anyone who owns a Jag is a clear choice for an antagonist.

Hamlin's redemption arc began back in Season 4, when the writers chipped away at his perfect image to reveal a much more damaged, vulnerable character. At the same time, dishonest but relatable Jimmy McGill was slowly taking the form of the amoral, self-serving Saul Goodman we originally met in Breaking Bad. The series is post-modern in this way — actors play characters who themselves assume different roles. Michael Mando's Nacho is an embedded spy/saboteur who had to be all things to all people in public, even as he was privately held hostage. Giancarlo Esposito plays a cartel boss who hides in plain sight behind the non-threatening image of a fast food restaurateur. Bob Odenkirk flexes his significant sketch comedy chops to play Jimmy's various personas: A retirement home BINGO announcer; a helpful phone salesman; and, in one of the few instances of broad comedy presented in season 6, he even pretended to be Howard. The show's directors have a habit of showing us these characters as they're reflected/refracted in various surfaces, allowing the audience to see their duplicitous and fractured selves.

Howard, it turns out, had also been putting on a facade. His marriage was falling apart, and we witnessed how his attempts at magnanimity and reconciliation were icily rebuffed by his wife, who could barely hide her contempt for him as he struggled to maintain his sunny exterior. Though we witnessed his actual execution an episode later, this terse scene was more heartbreaking.

The divide between heroes and villains is a matter of perspective: By allowing the audience to experience Howard's, the writers automatically make black hats of Jimmy and Kim  - and thus their plans to disrupt his life seem needlessly cruel and vindictive. In his final scene, Howard was allowed to give his side of the rivalry. For actor Patrick Fabian, it was a dramatic monologue; for the attorney that Fabian portrayed over the course of 6 seasons, it was a closing argument. 

Howard made irrefutable points: The resentment towards him was petty, and Kim and Jimmy were both deeply ungrateful for the opportunities Howard provided them. The two decided to exact revenge on Howard for his wealth and good looks, being an exacting boss, and following the wishes of Jimmy's own brother. And in having Howard berate Jimmy and Kim, the writers were also obliquely addressing the audience who reveled in his downfall.

If you've seen enough horror movies, you probably sensed that the empty space in the top left corner of the screen during Howard's diatribe portended danger; when Lalo (presumed dead) enters the scene, it's with all the menace of a Hammer Horror vampire, candles flickering to announce his arrival as his shadow slowly occupies that dead space. That the other characters stammer ineffectually while he calmly screws the silencer on his pistol is darkly comic; Howard, having completed his redemption arc, was given one last kick by the writers as he stated the obvious ("I think I'm in the middle of something") while cravenly trying to exit the situation. The scene's similarity to a classic Simpsons scene is probably unintentional, but that doesn't make it less comedic. Or Howard's death any less undignified.

Pour one out for poor Howard. Hopefully he's in a better place —like a series on the USA Network where rich, good looking people don't exist solely to be laid low by pranksters and television writers.

😎: I actually have really specific nationalities for my characters! Carmine and Amber are Chinese-Malaysian. Sunny is Canadian-American. Sage is Indian-South African-American. Azure is the only one I don't have the specifics ironed out for, mostly cause they're an orphan, but Mediterranean roots. Periwinkle is Libyan-American.

🩸: Carmine gets anxiety but is stone faced. Amber isn't paying attention but he screams in lowercase when there's a scary part. Sunny falls asleep. Sage has to bury her face in Carmine. Azure just kind of watches without reaction and then afterwards signs what they thought. Periwinkle laughs.

🧠: Carmine doesn't really listen to music, EXCEPT for Mitski and mxmtoon and some Conan Gray. She WILL cry at Family Line. Amber is an avid Harry Styles listener. Sunny is an avid "lo-fi beats to study and relax to listener" but he's also a big fan of Ghibli soundtracks. Sage is a fan of heavy metal but will listen to anything. Azure gets overwhelmed by music but they like tadpoles lullaby. Periwinkle doesn't really have a favourite genre but she prefers it when music is playing.

🥐: now that I think about it, none of my OCs are musicians, but Amber is a casual dancer!

💧: this is actually one of the first things I figured out about each character! Carmine is scared of the dark. Amber is scared of heights. Sunny is scared of spiders. Sage is scared of being alone. Azure is afraid of failure. Periwinkle is afraid of death.

🌮: for Carmine, those REALLY spicy noodles that burn your mouth. For Amber, fries (it was almost all he ate during his eating disorder). For Sunny, also fries (since they're Amber's bf) or pancakes since they ate pancakes the day after Sunny was introduced. For Sage, fruits and veggies. For Azure, not technically a food but ramune soda. For Periwinkle, a Libyan pasta dish I forget the name of (it's her comfort food)

🍓: Carmine and Amber grew up in a strict "NO PETS" household, but Amber was friends with every stray he encountered. Sunny has a pet frog currently, but his first pet was a golden retriever that was old when he was little. Sage never had pets. Azure was homeless for a good chunk of their life so they also never had pets but they like seagulls. Periwinkle probably had like a snake or something at one point.

💰: Well, during the story, they're all teenagers on the road with very little money, so they're all a bit anxious about it. Specifically though: Carmine is very smart with money. She knows what to save and what to spend. Amber is very reckless. Sunny grew up in a struggling household, so he always wants to be spending as little money as possible. Sage is neutral. She doesn't spend too much but she spends a good amount. Azure is so used to being broke they don't even care about money. Periwinkle is the same as Sunny, but she treats herself more often.

🧊: Carmine wants to learn more Cantonese because she wants to feel more connected to her family's culture. Her parents were very adamant about leaving it behind, but that isn't what she wants. She knows a little ASL. Amber is learning ASL to communicate better with Azure (who is nonverbal). Sunny knows French, since his lifelong childhood friend knew very little English when they met. Sage knows some ASL for Azure's sake. Azure knows ASL, but they didn't learn it until they met Periwinkle. Periwinkle casually knows like five languages, including ASL, but only enough to hold basic conversations.

💗: Carmine is a flannel girlie. Amber is a hoodie guy. Sunny is a "wears anything" guy. Sage likes sweaters. Azure detests the feeling of heavy clothes on their torso. Periwinkle is always wearing a turtleneck.

⚽: Carmine is an axe thrower. Amber is a dancer. Sunny doesn't like sports. Sage is very bad at cheerleading but loves it. Azure is a swimmer. Periwinkle doesn't care for sports, but she's very strong.

💚: for Carmine, it's REALLY fancy udon or ramen. So much stuff in it she gets overwhelmed. It's heaven for them. For Amber, it's fries and granola bars. Again, it's all he used to eat when he was struggling with anorexia. For Sunny, it's sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies. Picnic style. For Sage, it's fancy salads with nuts, avocado, dressing, seeds, greens, fruits, honey, even rice. For Azure, it's literally anything they're offered. They don't get a lot of texture issues once the thing enters their mouth, weirdly enough. For Periwinkle, it's pasta.

⚔️: Carmine and Amber were both victims of bullying and abuse growing up, which I think speaks for itself. Sunny beat up a guy for being a transphobe. Sage doesn't fight. Azure doesn't fight. Periwinkle doesn't remember, but she knows she's fucked some people up.

🟥: For Carmine, Arsonist's Lullaby. Also the sound of ears ringing for some reason. For Amber, it's gotta be CPR or any Harry Styles song. For Sunny, Humpty. For Sage, Lucky One by Mich. For Azure, Tadpoles Lullaby. For Periwinkle, Too Sweet.

🎊: using AO3 tags for this. Carmine likes hurt and comfort. Amber likes smut (he pretends it's ironic but it's unironic). Sunny likes fantasy and soft romance. Sage likes romance and history. Azure likes anything but isn't one for romance. Periwinkle's books have more words in annotation than in the story.

🌊: Carmine hates the idea of organs. She associates them with gore, so thinking about the fact that they're currently inside her is weird. For Amber, it's food. For Sunny, it's anything sexual, especially without consent (SA survivor). For Sage, not much makes her "squeamish," but she's uncomfortable with arguments. For Azure it's remembering their clothes are touching their skin, and also plastic. For Periwinkle, it's grease when she didn't know there was grease.

🍪: I don't know many pokemon but like,,, I think Carmine would like Blazecon or whatever his name is. Amber would obsess over the eeveelutions. Sunny would just like eevee. Sage would like the green bell plant one that looks like the pea shooter from plants vs zombies. Azure would like magicarp purely because they find it funny. Periwinkle would like any weird looking purple one.

☂️: Carmine would murder the person who tied others to the tracks. Amber would be so uncaring he'd kill the 5 just for the heck of it. Sunny would kill the one person. Sage would cry. Azure would do nothing. Periwinkle has thought this out extensively and would run over the five people.

🙄: for Carmine, basically everything. For Amber, sexism and purity culture. For Sunny, 🍇 culture. For Sage, miscommunication. For Azure, unnecessary violence. For Periwinkle, also everything.

🐢: Carmine would stand awkwardly. Amber would dance and flirt. Sunny would stand awkwardly with Carmine and watch Amber. Sage would have her hand over her drink so much she wouldn't get the chance to drink it. She's also shaking. Azure would leave immediately. Periwinkle would get into a heated debate with someone over drinks.

🎀: Carmine gets agitated. Amber goes quiet and shaky. Sunny gets extremely aggressive. Sage freezes and cries. Azure stares into space. Periwinkle gets agitated.

🎹: Carmine is constantly trying, but cannot. Amber can. Sunny can't and doesn't try. Sage can. Azure can. Periwinkle can't and couldn't care less.

🖤: Carmine likes chewelry. Amber likes The Slug for the noises. Sunny likes the clicky ones that you can make shapes with. Sage likes baby sensory videos. Azure just likes water and stress balls because texture. Periwinkle also likes stress balls, because stress.
