Rio was surprised to find she liked her new routine. Wake up in the morning, yell at Ryoga to wake up, and check the Duel Gazer…and yes, there was always at least one notification in her inbox. Smiling quietly, she flipped the text open with her thumb…

Arrive at their meeting spot…and he was always there, no matter how late she showed. Always smiling, always faintly blushing, and more often than not with a small token. It's been a long time now, but I still find myself to really like SunlikeShipping.

When I was more active in the zexal fandom, this pairing seldomly popped up. That's a bit of a waste, imo! In any case, I think it's right to appreaciate these guys' bond, whether you see it through shipping goggles or not.

Tetsuo always like Rio. When she looked like an elegant, quiet girl, when she turned out to be fierce, and even when he thought Yuuma and her were a couple. (Heck he was even happy about it, because Yuuma is his best friend and he considers Rio to be a huge gift from Heavens!)

In canon, Rio may not see Tetsuo as a possible boyfriend (we have no indication of that whatsoever). But I'm absolutely positive that she appreciates him at least a bit. Here, in episode 92, he showed her tons of support. He told her to believe in herself, to find her own path, and stand up to Ryouga before anyone else. And I'm sure she was very happy about it.

Anyway, as far as Tetsuo goes, I'm sure his feelings are pure. He likes Rio-san because she is Rio-san, and he is able to see who she really is. That's why I still think that sunlikeshipping could have some pretty good, solid basis. I would've liked for it to become a canon romantic relationship, but, to be honest, the few materials zexal gave me are enough. Heck, they could even stay friends forever for all I care. Tetsuo has already proved that he'd still be an amazing person anyway.

Zexal Rarepair challenge 5/? - Sunlikeshipping

Title: Let's go for a swim Wordcount: 859 Rating: K Spoiler warning: Takes place after canon (and could possibly be a sequel to this)

Tetsuo welcomed that gentle breeze that had started caressing his face. It was a hot Friday afternoon, and everyone had gathered at the park to study. Midterms were around the corner, and summer break was still nothing but a dream.

They had split in small groups: everyone wanted to stay in the shades of the trees, but they couldn't possibly fit all under the same one.

Shark was trying to help the former Barian emperors understand the concept of exams, Takashi was explaining some of the most complicated concepts of every subject to poor Yuma, with the kind support of Mihael, Cathy, and Kotori, while Vector, who had nothing better to do than pester everyone, had found a new prank-comrade in Tokunosuke.

The two of them managed, despite Shark's not-so-concealed protests, to put Rio and Tetsuo under the same tree, while teasing them,shouting and telling everyone how cute they were together.

Tetsuo cherished their relationship, and didn't want those two guys to pester Rio -or himself, for the matter- about it. The two of them had started going out, yes, but right now, they were friends.

Noticing that trying to make them shut up would was completely useless, he tried to channel their attention to the ice cream stall nearby. Surprisingly enough, that worked. (The red-head clarified that is was “only because all this running around made us sweat this much!”)

Rio, however, didn't almost pay attention to all of that. She was sitting against the tree trunk, absorbed in her Japanese language book. Tetsuo had to admit that he actually owed one to Vector and Tokunosuke. While she seemed way too focused to pay any attention to him, and thus chatting with her was out of question, he found the way she whispered the notions she was reading absolutely adorable.

How am I supposed to be able to study in this situation? he thought, shyly spying on her over his maths notes. She looked even cuter than usual, with that little frown and some sweat droplets on her forehead.

He almost let his papers fall when she suddenly spoke to him. “Today is unbearably hot and damp, isn't it?” she casually said, while reaching for herd bag. She took a bottle of water out of it and took a sip, all without taking her other hand or her eyes off the book. How come that everything you do is so cute, Rio-san?!

“Ah, y-yes, it's unbearable...” he replied. “And moreover, we have to study all this stuff... I can't wait for summer break, really...” “Ooh, me too!” Rio posed the book on her knees and stretched her arms, before hiding her face behind her hands. “I can't do this anymore. I need a pause.” she laughed nervously.

“Yeah, me too.” sighed Tetsuo. “I would kill to hit the swimming pool, right now!” Rio quickly raised her head, smiling widely.  “That's a great idea! Let's go together! No studying tomorrow, my brain needs to relax a bit.”

“Eh? Oh, o-ok!” Tetsuo was surprised, but pleased. He unwillingly managed to cheer up Rio, after all! “I'll go and tell the others--” “What? No.” Rio interrupted him by sticking her right index finger out. “I meant just us. You and me!”

“Ah. I see.” he made a small pause. She had asked him out other times. That filled him with joy, but at the same time, he felt more and more unworthy.

“It's ok if you want to ask the others, too!” Added Rio, seeing him that pensive. “It was only a suggestion. I'm going anyway!” “No, it's not that.” he shook his head, still lost in his thoughts. “Rio-san?” “Yes?”

“One of these these days I'll probably ask you out properly.” “Like... for a date?” she asked. Was that hope in her voice? Tetsuo had to think about it for a couple of seconds. “Yeah, a date.”  He could feel his cheeks turn red.

“Not now, though. I need to prepare myself psychologically...” Rio laughed. “In the mean time-”

“What are these two lovebirds talking about?” asked loudly Vector, clearly back from the ice cream shop. He sat right next to Tetsuo, crossing his legs and laying his head on his free hand. Tokunosuke wasn't there: he was walking towards a desperate, crying Yuma, since he thought that situation to be more interesting.

“Fill me in. Come on.” demanded the Barian. “Here.” coldly said Tetsuo, handing him his maths exercises. “She was helping me with this. Wanna join?” 

“Ew, no.” Vector enthusiasm died as fast as the romantic atmosphere Tetsuo was trying to build. He stood up and dashed away, ready to ask Shark how were things going. (A long, exasperated scream that made everyone turn was heard. Tetsuo and Rio concluded that the answer was 'horribly'.)

“Next time, we're going to watch a movie.” said Tetsuo. “At least, if he ever manages to follow us, he'll be kicked out. In the mean time, yeah, let's go for a swim!”

Title: Prize Pairing: Sunlikeshipping (Tetsuo/Rio) Rating: K Word count: 1109 Summary: Tetsuo has been dueling a lot with everyone lately, but never once challenged Rio. She asks for explanations. SPOILER WARNING: Takes place post-canon. Episode 125 is mentioned.

(English is not my first language, and I'm not really good at fan fictions to begin with. "orz )

“Tetsuo-kun, may I ask you a question?”

Tetsuo started sweating. He had run into Rio by accident in the school halls, that morning, and that alone brightened up his day. And the very same Rio wanted to ask something to him! Lessons hadn't even started, and he could already tell that that day was going to be great.

… Or so he thought. Panic quickly took his excitement's place as soon as Rio spoke again. “I noticed you've been challenging everyone lately- not only Yuuma, but Durbe, Mihael, even my brother, too. But you never asked me to duel once.” she said, as composed as ever. “Odd.” she added after a brief pause. “I recall you once wanted to duel me, someday. Am I wrong?”

Tetsuo was avoiding challenging her, and for a very precise reason, too. But since he simply couldn't bring himself to tell the truth yet, he tried to tell her a little white lie. “I- yeah, you see, I thought... you are a really busy person, and I didn't want to bother you with-”

Rio interrupted him.

“Are you scared of dueling with me?”

She wasn't teasing him. She was dead serious... And looked a little worried. She hadn't forgot that day, and she was certain that neither did Tetsuo. The day they dueled, the day she kind of... killed him.

Sure, the Numeron Code set things right, once the war had ended, but she couldn't blame Tetsuo if he was still shocked by what happened.

“W-what?” asked Tetsuo, startled.. “No, don't worry, I completely understand.” said Rio warmly. “I mean, after our duel, you-” “That's not it at all!” exclaimed Tetsuo so loudly he made some students turn in his direction. “How could I ever be scared of the kind and gentle Rio-san?!”

“Oh...” Rio was a bit confused, but relieved. She still did wonder why he was challenging so many strong duelists one after another. She was about to speak, but Tetsuo was faster.

“Well, um, you see... the real reason is...” he started. The right words seemed to not want to come out his mouth. How was he going to explain everything to her?

After the war, everyone went back to school almost as nothing had really happened. Thanks to the Numeron Code, nothing much had changed in their lives.  Mihael and the former Seven Barian Emperors started attending at their school, and all the fighting and pain became just a memory. The newcomers and the Kamishiro twins were among the most popular students of the school.

While someone (mostly Alit and Girag) was flattered by that special attentions, others, such as Rio, were not. After all, popularity just gave her troubles. Rio had a bunch of persistent fans, who apparently just couldn't help but make her angry with their antics and constant pestering.

Tetsuo didn't want to be like them. He wanted to make sure to be a worthy opponent for Rio, and thus he decided he would've challenged her only when he knew he was ready. 

All because he wanted to show her the he could still grow a lot as a duelist, and that she gave him a reason to push his limits. He wanted to thank her, but every time he thought about being honest with her and simply tell her everything, his face would turn bright red, and he would start sputtering nonsense phrases. The only way he had to express his feelings to her right now were duels.

Unluckily for him, Rio was an excellent duelist, and she had already crushed him once. I could never prove her how much I changed because of her, like this. he said to himself. I still need to practice if I want to reach her with my feelings!

His plan consisted in challenging all their friends. In a couple of months, by challenging such formidable foes, he made amazing progresses. Even Shark once agreed on having a quick duel with him.

Tetsuo knew he still had a long way to go, though, since almost every opponent, who was just as strong as Rio, could still win rather quickly...

“You're still much stronger than me, Rio-san.” he started, after taking a deep breath. “During our duel, I was pathetic- because I'm still not good enough.” he quickly added, in order to not give her the time to contradict him. “I'd like to give you a duel that us both can enjoy. A-and maybe, if I manage to win, I could finally find the strength to...” He was about to tell her that he would've liked to take her out on a date, but he stopped, and shook his head. That wasn't that important, at the moment. “Please, just give me a little more time to improve! There is something I must tell you, but I must make sure to be able to give my all in our duel, first.”

The girl smiled softly at him. He seemed really determinate and sincere, so she decided to accept his explanation. “Of course.” Tetsuo nodded at her. “Thank you for understanding, Rio-san! Well then, I should go-” “Speaking of, Tetsuo-kun.” she said before he could take his leave. “Since I won our duel, I think I earned a prize.” “A prize?” “You see, they just opened a new cafe downtown, and I still haven't got the chance to try it out. We could go take a look today, after lessons. I have some work to get done first, but I should be free around 5 o'clock. Shall we meet at the gates by then?” Tetsuo took a few seconds to process the information he had just received. “Wh- yes, of course!” he shouted once he realized that Rio was asking him to spend some time together. “Very well, then! I'll see you this afternoon.” Rio greeted him with a smile and walked away, leaving him daydreaming in the middle of the hall. “No... this is no dream! I have a date with Rio-san!” That wasn't his main goal at the moment, but that surely motivated him a lot more.

“Tetsuo? What are you doing, just standing there with that face?”

Tetsuo turned to see that Yuuma had arrived, and he was staring at him with a puzzled look. “Yuuma! Amazing timing! From now on, you must duel with me twice as more!” “Twice as more? Y-yes, of course! But can I ask you why are we-” Yuuma never got to finish is sentence. Tetsuo had already dashed off to class, shouting “Wait for me, Rio-san!”, leaving him alone. “Man, I really don't understand what's in that guy's head...”

I'm sorry about grammar errors and everything, I really do. (I know nothing of English grammar, my English skills just... happened...) I wanted to explain and write many other things, but even though they come out smoothly and clear in Italian, it's kind of difficult for me to translate them properly in another language.

I'm also not good at writing proper fan fictions. I tried more than once, but I just seem to not be able to get the grip of it. But I really wanted to write something about sunlikeshipping, so there it is!

Also, I was planning on changing the title into something on the lines of “through a duel”, but this fiction was written with the idea of “prize = date” ringing into my head. Even though the prize is now completely secondary... “orz
