There’s something that gives me a low grade ick about rivals cheering each other on in elite gymnastics (particularly WAG) now. Like why the fuck are you rooting for your competition DURING the competition. idgaf about sportsmanship or whatever there’s a difference between acknowledging your direct opponent’s performance mid-competition and wooping and hollering on the sidelines for them idk

in ways I feel it’s a function of the outside impression of the sport. like howwww many sports are there where the top competitors, even clear rivals, clearly respect each other but when it’s game time they’re savages. MAG is like that to a lesser extent too. Why is it that they all have to stand around and sing kumbaya or they hate each other and have personal beef? Why is there no middle ground, even? are these not world class athletes? what’s wrong with them having a different demeanor/mental approach during a competition vs immediately after and outside of competition?

In a way I think it’s a failure of the fans/spectators now to separate the two and it feeds into how acutely aware they are of the public’s interpretation of the smallest interactions. Maybe even a chicken or egg situation.

this whole "spoilers dont matter at all and if you care even a little bit about them, youre an idiot and if a piece of media is better if experienced unspoiled, its bad media" take being spouted by pseudo-intellectual leftists is one of the most infuriating random "correct Left Media Opinion" discourses ive seen in a while, next to the whole localization vs translation debacle (and of course the Censorship Debate)

yes, for MOST media, spoilers ultimately dont matter that much. but there are ABSOLUTELY pieces out there that depend on obfuscation and misdirection to mislead and deliberately build a false narrative that is WORTH the payoff as a viewer when the truth is revealed (Metal Gear Solid 2, imo). there are also video games, especially, where the spoilers give away deep hidden gameplay mechanics and render the video game literally unplayable if spoiled (Outer Wilds, Animal Well, for example)

like idk i get that some people have taken spoiler avoidance too far but at the same time... some of yall are just fucking party poopers about it??? while usually spoilers dont make something Bad you are definitely altering your experience by being spoiled and i feel like people are allowed to want the zero expectation experience without being called a Bad Media Illiterate Leftist for it. :/

I’ve been playing crusader kings again and founded Poland and Immediately had tons of gay sex, had my fav gay lover a place on the council, and got stalked by witches for 10 years.
