D.C. Beyoncé Impersonator Riley Knoxx Talks Being in Taylor Swift's Latest Music Video
Washington City Paper // by Elizabeth Tuten // June 21st 2019
WCP: So how did you first get connected to Taylor Swift and the music video for “You Need to Calm Down?” Riley Knoxx: She basically went online looking for a Beyoncé impersonator, found my website, stalked my Instagram. She hand picked me. When Taylor was talking to me on set, she was like, “Thank you for telling your story,” and I was like, “You know my story?” and she was like, “Of course, I picked you.” She’d seen my videos, she’d read my NPR article, she knew it all. I told her that when they told me she’d picked me, I thought they meant her people had picked me, but no, it was really her.
WCP: How did you feel when you heard you’d been cast? RK: I was actually at Queeta’s Palace doing DreamGirls Twisted, doing Deena Jones. I was bouncing off the walls I was so happy. I couldn't tell anyone. Someone asked why I was so hyper and I was like “I can’t tell you but I gotta be in L.A. on Wednesday.” That was on a Sunday. Honestly I didn’t even know what I was supposed to be doing. We didn’t know if it was going to be negative, there’d just been that press about Taylor ripping off the marching band from Beyoncé. Luckily, it was positive. It was really positive.
WCP: What was the vibe like on set? RK: Taylor comes in, I turned around and she said “Hi” and I said “Hey” and she literally jumped in my arms. She sits on the couch and tells us, “I’m compared to all these pop stars, but of all the pop stars out there I’m most like Ed Sheeran, but nobody ever compares me to him, they want to compare me against these other women. So I want you girls here to represent that we’re all strong, fierce women." She was the most gracious, most kind person I’ve met in my life, not just celebrity. I totally had a different opinion of her before I met her. People say a lot of things. I mean she made a whole album about her reputation. In the media she’s painted as a mean girl, there are so many different controversies, Harry [Styles] and Kim Kardashian. But now, honestly if anyone tries to say anything bad about Taylor Swift to me, know I’ll be like “Eh! You don’t understand. This girl is amazing.”
WCP: You have so many Beyoncé costumes, most of which you design and sew yourself. How was the outfit you wore in the video selected? Was it one of your creations? RK: Yes, I make everything that I wear onstage. She had seen the NPR article with this turquoise outfit I hardly ever wear that’s a look of Beyoncé, they liked that, very sheer, very see through, so I brought that, the white one, and a gold and black one I wore in my last concert. So I had to take pictures in all of them and send them the night before in the hotel. I tried them all on, and they wanted the specific one, the turquoise one. But then I got to set, obviously the most elaborate one and the most memorable replica was the white costume from On The Run II [Tour in summer 2018]. So the director looks at it all while we’re in wardrobe, and someone’s like “Where’s the one that we requested?” and the director said no, that he wanted the most memorable one, that the white one was the best. So that’s how they selected it.
WCP: One criticism of the video is that it rips off Beyoncé’s video for “Party.” What do you think of the similarities, and do they seem intentional to you? RK: I never even heard that! Crazy. No! I don’t think so. I think it’s just a coincidence. Honestly the two videos are very different. I can see why people would say that, but I really don’t think that’s what Taylor is trying to do, I don’t think she’s trying to copy everything Beyoncé does.
WCP: What do you think of the criticism that the video puts a straight white woman at the center of the queer narrative? RK: She’s championed gay people many times, in other videos and things. It’s like, when you have a platform like that, who better to use it for than communities that have been underserved. It’s like, you have this platform, you have this voice, what do you want to say? Use that to do some good. You know, she said nothing, and they complained that she wasn’t being political enough. Now she’s saying something, and it’s “appropriating culture?” How? How is she appropriating culture? She’s trying to help. She’s saying, “These are all my friends, go follow them, go to their shows, stan them.” And she also has a petition for the Equality Act. It’s basically her lending her voice. There’s been tons of straight white women who’ve lent their voice - Madonna, Cher - you know other straight women who are gay icons. Why not Taylor?
WCP: What do you hope that people take away from “You Need to Calm Down?’ RK: Exactly that, that they need to calm down. Like she says, “Shade never made anybody less gay.” Protesting and doing all this crazy stuff won’t stop people from being gay, from being trans. Nobody ever saw a sign and said, “You know what, maybe I will stop being gay,” because someone came and picketed. You know, we live on this planet together, we all have to share, and you don’t have to like what we do, or who we are, but respect us as a community. This video will be iconic forever. Taylor even said to me, “This is the biggest video I’ll ever do.” And it’s probably the most important. It’s incorporating all queer culture. You don’t have to be gay to have the voice to help people; you’re an ally. She wants to be an ally, let her be an ally.
WCP: Where can we see you perform around D.C. this summer? RK: You can see me perform every Saturday and Sunday morning at Queeta’s Palace at Benning Road, you can get tickets at eventbrite.com. And I’ll be touring soon and doing concerts and I’ll announce all that soon on my Instagram page, @RileyKnoxx. Two x’s.

If I’ve said it once on this blog, I’ve said it 15 times, but the Allure Beauty Box is the beauty subscription box I will always recommend to people when they are asking which beauty box is the best. While this one is a bit pricier than some of the others at $15/month, the value usually far exceeds that $15 price tag, and this box is no exception. I do deviate from our normal review template to rant for a bit about some shady things one of the included brands has been caught doing. But let’s be real – this wouldn’t be a Lauren Blog without some sort of rant now, would it?
ALLURE BEAUTY BOX
Price: $15.00/month
Box Type: Monthly beauty box featuring 6 high end beauty product samples (and sometimes full-sized products!).
Why you’ll love it: Top brands, great price, new products that you will love! A great way to sample expensive products without committing to the price tag. Each box comes with an Allure mini-magazine that showcases each product and is as quality as you’d expect from a magazine powerhouse like Allure.
How To Subscribe: Click here! They have a new referral program so def click our link!
Here is the Allure Mini-Mag that they always include. I find this super helpful to get some tips about all of the products they include, much like the full-size magazine.
And here’s everything we got this month! Wow! What a haul this month, eh?
Sunday Riley Good Genes ($105) and Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser ($35): As I referenced in the first paragraph, I was going to rant a bit about one of the brands in this box, and, surprise! It’s Sunday Riley! If you hadn’t heard, an ex-Sunday Riley employee posted some company emails where employees were asked to write fake, glowing reviews for their products, specifically their Saturn line, which is aimed at those who are dealing with acne. They were asked to sound relatable and write things like, “I’ve tried everything and this is the only product that works.” “Yes, it’s expensive but works incredibly well in comparison to cheaper masks out there.” You get the idea. But they weren’t only asked to create fake profiles and write fake reviews, they were asked to use VPN technology in order to mask that the fake reviews were coming from Sunday Riley. Their first response was incredibly disappointing to me. One, they acted like they were just asking their employees to write about their own experiences. Obviously, that would be fine. But they weren’t doing that. They were asking their employees to be deceptive and create fake profiles and in order to write fake reviews. Their response really didn’t indicate they wouldn’t be doing it anymore either. To me, it sounded like more of a rationalization, since “another company was writing negative reviews.” I left a comment saying most of this on one of their unrelated Instagram posts, because it seemed like at first, they were trying to bury this story. Their comments are incredibly expensive, but a lot of them are really great, and they should be able to stand on their own without fake reviews, in my opinion. Also, not every product is going to work for every single person, and that’s ok, too! Those reviews are especially helpful, actually, and it sucks they would try to bury them. Eventually they made a brand new post, still very carefully not saying what they were accused of, except that, “They hear us.” But then they said they were going to have a third-party audit their business practices and make the report public, so I’m interested to hear what they say next.

So you might be wondering… am I going to keep supporting Sunday Riley? I’m not sure. I don’t feel as strongly about this as I did about Tarte and Kat Von D. But I wasn’t really thrilled to hear about this either. I love their Luna Night Oil ($105) – it’s become a holy grail product for me. But the Good Genes serum, that I actually got in the box this month – I have purchased the full-size of this and I don’t really care for it. It certainly didn’t make my skin worse, but it’s incredibly expensive and I really didn’t think it did much of ANYTHING for me. The mini-mag and those with more sensitive skin say that this makes skin tingle a bit, but I never felt anything. But that’s ok! Some products work for people and some don’t and that’s how it should be, since no one’s skin is the same. Also, I’ve tried this Ceramic Slip cleanser and I think it smells TERRIBLE. And it also tastes terrible, but obvs you are not supposed to eat it. Sometimes it just gets in my mouth when I’m washing my face and I do not like. I’ll probably use it just to use it up, but I wouldn’t buy the full-size. Anyway, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Hourglass Caution Mascara ($29): I just got this in the Sephora Play! Luxe Vol. 2 box, so I’m going to copy what I said here: I have tried the Caution mascara before and I like it OK. It doesn’t give me me as much volume as I prefer for my top lashes, but I really like it for my bottom lashes, as one of its major selling points is that it doesn’t smudge. However, the issue with this particular sample mascara is the wand itself. Because it’s so short, and the handle itself is so big and bulky, it’s sort of hard to apply. This obviously wouldn’t be a problem with the full-size version because the wand is much longer, but it is an annoying part of this sample.
Yves Sant Laurent Tatouage Couture Matte Liquid Lip Stain in Singular Taupe 23 ($37): Y’all know I am done with liquid lipsticks because they are so drying and terrible. Every time someone says, “No, but THIS one is actually comfortable!” They are just full of lies. Except when it comes to this one. This formula is so interesting, it’s almost like a stain. Well, it’s actually exactly like a stain. The formula is very thin and it just feels like nothing on your lips. I swatched it on my lips at like 2am on a Saturday night (wild times, I’m telling you), and I wore it for awhile as I finished binging Better Call Saul. (Better than Breaking Bad, in my opinion.) I like this formula enough to where I might actually buy some full-sizes of these. Maybe a red for holiday things, where I wouldn’t have to worry about it moving all over my face. I think I’ll buy some of these during the next VIB Rouge sale. This is really that good. I’ll be wearing the Singular Taupe shade regularly, until I run out or lose it. It’s 50/50.
Caudalie Vinopure Skin Perfecting Serum ($49): I am sort of between serums at the moment, as I am sort of waiting for the next VIB sale before I invest in more skincare because let’s face it – skincare is expensive and I’ll take that 20% discount when I can get it. I’m interested to try this, as I’m pretty sure I’ve tried it before. I remember it being lightweight and nice to wear under makeup. The mini-mag says that it’s actually great for balancing combo
First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream ($30): I remember getting a full-size of this in a POPSUGAR Must Have box back in the day, and I think I have it somewhere in my skincare closet. It’s a pretty thick moisturizer that is great for very dry skin. Since I don’t have the driest skin, I only use this a few times in the winter when my nose gets kind flaky. However, if you have super dry skin and you don’t really know where to start to go about fixing it, this cream is a really good place to start.
bkr Paris Water Balm ($22): If you’ve ever been to Nordstrom or Neimans, you’ve seen the fancy bkr glass water bottles with the silicone sleeves. They are apparently the chicest way to drink water, however, in practice, I don’t really like them so much. Mostly because the neck of the water bottle seemed too small to get ice into, and I like to sip water through the day, so I like ice in there to keep it cool. Anyway, the bkr company decided to get into the beauty game, when they created this lip balm, and also a bottle cap where you can attach said lip balm so it’s always handy with your water. Of course, it has castor oil in it, because why wouldn’t it? However, I tried it on anyway and while it makes my skin incredibly shiny, it’s so goopy and sticky that I wouldn’t enjoy wearing it. I’ll take my Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ($20) any day of the week! (And it’s cheaper for like 3x the product!)
Just for fun, here are a few pics from my Insta Story unboxing, where Franklin was my model since he would not move out of the way. If you are following us on Instagram, you really should! I’m getting better at instagram stories and posting more frequently! @Boxy_Ladies

Drake Puts Safety First at Apollo Theater Concert, Halts Show After Fan Incident
At Sunday night’s Drake concert at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, a fan fell from the mezzanine into the orchestra. 90 minutes into the performance, just after collaborator 21 Savage had been introduced by Drake, the incident took place.
The Canadian rapper abruptly stopped the show after being quickly informed of the incident by security, according to The Insider.
“Just have to make sure somebody’s OK,” he said. The rappers left the stage for about 15 minutes, and the house lights were brought up as on-site emergency medical services attended to the fallen fan.
The Apollo Theater then declared that nobody was hurt and that the person was “checked on.” Following the incident, the theater declared that “the show must go on. The Apollo issued a tweet on Monday confirming the incident.
“Drake, Apollo, and SiriusXM halted the show immediately when learning of a potential fan injury and standard protocols were taken,” the venue stated.
“The fan and other audience members reported that they were OK. No major injuries have been reported.” The Apollo added that it is “investigating the situation further.”
The show was abruptly stopped by Drake to ensure the safety of the injured fan, and the fans praised him for acting quickly. It serves as a reminder that both venues and artists should always put concertgoers’ safety and wellbeing first.
This serves as a reminder that these incidents are serious ones, and that both performers and venues should always put the audience’s security first.

Perform
The highly anticipated duet album Her Loss, featuring Drake and 21 Savage, was performed live last night. Despite the album’s mixed reception from critics upon release in November of last year, it managed to top the Billboard 200 chart.
One of the most buzzed moments of the concert was the performance of “Circo Loco,” a track from the album that caused controversy for its lyrics. The song includes a line that implies that Megan Thee Stallion lied about being shot by Tory Lanez, an accusation that drew criticism from Thee Stallion herself. The rapper later went on to win her case against Lanez in court.
Despite the criticism, Drake and 21 Savage’s concert was a hit with fans, who were excited to see the two artists perform together for the first time. The concert was a memorable event, and it’s clear that the two artists have a strong chemistry together.
Overall, Her Loss may have received mixed reviews, but the album’s success and the concert’s popularity show that Drake and 21 Savage are still at the top of their game. Fans can’t wait for what’s next from these two talented artists.
Drake
Drake is a Canadian rapper, singer, and songwriter, born Aubrey Drake Graham, who has taken the music industry by storm.
He rose to fame in the mid-2000s with his mixtape series, So Far Gone, which featured the hit single “Best I Ever Had.” Since then, he has released six studio albums, all of which have debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
His music is known for its blend of hip-hop, R&B, and pop, and his lyrics often address themes of heartbreak, relationships, and personal growth. He is better known for his collaborations with other artists, such as Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and 21 Savage.
One of his most notable achievements is his record-breaking chart success. He has the most number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart among solo male artists, and his album Scorpion holds the record for the most simultaneous top 10 songs in a single week.
He has also won four Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, and 33 Billboard Music Awards.
Offstage, Drake is known for his philanthropy and his dedication to his hometown of Toronto, Canada. He has donated millions of dollars to charitable causes, and he also established the OVO Foundation, which focuses on improving the lives of young people in Toronto.
His impact on the music industry is undeniable. His unique sound and relatable lyrics have earned him a loyal fan base, and his record-breaking success has cemented his place as one of the most influential and successful artists of his generation.
With new music on the horizon and a tour planned for the near future, Drake’s fans eagerly await what’s next from this talented artist...Read More

Studs and duds from Texas' Red River Shootout loss to Oklahoma
ซื้อฟรีสปิน New year, same Red River letdown.
Steve Sarkisian’s first season as the Texas head coach sure has shown him the ups and downs. One week, 70 points wins you a game by 35, the next, a two-touchdown lead less than two minutes in leads to a loss. From the beginning of the second half, the Longhorns experienced a total letdown. In every facet of the game, Oklahoma was the better side, especially on offense. Both coaches will have positive and negative to address when resetting on Sunday. But Lincoln Riley will not feel as bad, even with a new quarterback controversy on his hands.Sarkisian, on the other hand, has some problems to address, whether the total shutdown of the offense or the lack of a shutdown by the defense. Even special teams will be in Texas fans’ nightmares for years to come. Here are the studs and duds from Texas’ shocking 52-45 loss to Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl.Credit to the Oklahoma fans against West Virginia. They got what they wanted and, boy, did it work. When Williams was inserted as the quarterback, the Sooners were down 35-17 and staring a huge halftime deficit in the face. From there, Williams led the offense to 38 points, and Oklahome punted twice. Texas had no answers for the true freshman.

Rally marks 1,000 days since China detained two Canadians amid Huawei dispute (Reuters) Supporters of two Canadians accused of spying and held in prison in China for 1,000 days rallied on Sunday, demanding their release in a case that has soured diplomatic ties between Ottawa and Beijing. Businessman Michael Spavor and former diplomat Michael Kovrig were detained in December 2018, shortly after Canada arrested Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies on a warrant from the United States. Last month, a Chinese court sentenced Spavor to 11 years in prison for espionage. Meng is waiting verdict on her U.S. extradition request here after the hearing wrapped up in a British Columbia court last month. Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau, who joined the rally, said in statement that years have been cruelly stolen from both men and their families. “This must stop. Mr. Kovrig and Mr. Spavor must come home,” the statement added.
Evacuations lifted for thousands in Tahoe as wildfire stalls (AP) Tens of thousands of people who fled South Lake Tahoe in the teeth of a wildfire were returning home as crews finally managed to stall the advance of flames scant miles from the resort. But authorities warned that residents of the scenic forest area on the California-Nevada state line weren’t out of the woods yet, with risks ranging from smoky, foul air to belligerent bears. Evacuation orders for South Lake Tahoe and other lakeside areas were downgraded to warnings on Sunday afternoon and California Highway Patrol officers began removing roadblocks along State Highway 50 from Nevada to the city limits. The threat from the Caldor Fire hasn’t entirely vanished but downgrading to a warning meant those who wish could return to their homes in what had been a smoke-choked ghost town instead of a thriving Labor Day getaway location.
Florida gunman killed 4 (AP) A man wearing full body armor fatally shot four people and engaged in a massive gunfight with police and deputies before he was wounded and surrendered, a Florida sheriff said Sunday. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said during a press conference that even after 33-year-old Bryan Riley was arrested Sunday morning, he was so aggressive that he tried to wrestle a gun from police as he lay on his hospital gurney. Judd said Riley, a former Marine who served as a sharpshooter in both Iraq and Afghanistan, seemed to have targeted his victims at random and appeared to be suffering from mental health issues.
Migrant caravan broken up again in southern Mexico (AP) Mexican border agents and police broke up a caravan of hundreds of migrants Sunday who had set out from southernmost Mexico—the fourth such caravan officials have raided in recent days. The group of about 800—largely Central Americans, Haitians, Venezuelans and Cubans—had spent then night at a basketball court near Huixtla, some 40 kilometers (25 miles) up the road from the border city of Tapachula where they had been kept awaiting processing by Mexican immigration officials. But shortly before dawn, immigration agents backed by police with anti-riot gear went into the crowd, pushing many into trucks. Mexico has faced immigration pressures from the north, south and within its own borders in recent weeks as thousands of migrants have crossed its southern border, the United States has sent thousands more back from the north and a U.S. court has ordered the Biden administration to renew a policy of making asylum seekers wait in Mexico for long periods of time.
Fear Grips Nicaragua as It Veers to Dictatorship (NYT) From the moment Medardo Mairena decided to run for president, in direct challenge to Nicaragua’s authoritarian leader, he was certain the security apparatus would eventually come for him. Over the summer, he watched as other opposition leaders disappeared. One by one, they were dragged from their homes amid a nationwide crackdown on dissent by the president, Daniel Ortega, whose quest to secure a fourth term had plunged the Central American nation into a state of pervasive fear. Since June, the police have jailed or put under house arrest seven candidates for November’s presidential election and dozens of political activists and civil society leaders. His turn came when heavily armed officers raided his home and took him away late on July 5. He had not been heard from until last Wednesday, when relatives were allowed one brief visit. They said they found him emaciated and sick, completely disconnected from the outside world. Government critics say the unpredictability and speed of the wave of arrests have turned Nicaragua into a more repressive state than it was during the early years of the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza, who was overthrown in 1979 by the Sandinista Revolutionary Movement led by Mr. Ortega and several other commanders.
Covid-19: Vaccine passports to start in England this month (BBC) Vaccine passports in nightclubs and other indoor venues in England will be required at the end of this month, the vaccines minister has confirmed. Nadhim Zahawi said it was the right time to start the scheme for sites with large crowds as all over-18s will have been offered two jabs by then. The Night Time Industries Association has said plans for vaccine passports could "cripple the industry" and see night clubs facing discrimination cases. Opposition to the plans has also come from Tory MPs on the Covid Recovery Group as well as the Liberal Democrats, whose leader, Ed Davey, described them as "divisive, unworkable and expensive".
Volunteers help poorest survive Thailand’s worst COVID surge (AP) For two months, carpenter Tun Nye hasn’t been able to send any money home to his parents in Myanmar to help them care for his 11-year-old son, after authorities in Thailand shut down his construction site over coronavirus concerns. No work has meant no income for him or his wife, who have been confined to one of more than 600 workers’ camps dotted around Bangkok, living in small room in a ramshackle building with boards and blankets to cover missing windows. In Thailand’s worst virus surge yet, lockdown measures have reduced what little Bangkok’s have-nots had to zero. Volunteer groups are working to ensure they survive. For Tun Nye, 31, the bag of rice, canned fish and other staples dropped off by Bangkok Community Help volunteers meant not having to go hungry that week. Bangkok Community Help delivers about 3,000 hot meals a day and up to 600 “survival bags” like the one Tun Nye got.
Paralympic closing marks end of Tokyo’s 8-year Olympic saga (AP) The final act of the delayed Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics came Sunday, almost eight years to the day after the Japanese capital was awarded the Games. The Paralympics ended a 13-day run in a colorful, circus-like ceremony at the National Stadium overseen by Crown Prince Akishino, the brother of Emperor Naruhito. The Olympics closed almost a month ago. These were unprecedented Olympics and Paralympics, postponed for a year and marked by footnotes and asterisks. No fans were allowed during the Olympics, except for a few thousand at outlying venues away from Tokyo. A few thousand school children were allowed into some Paralympic venues. Like the Olympics, the Paralympics went ahead as Tokyo was under a state of emergency due to the pandemic. Like the Olympics, testing athletes frequently and isolating them in a bubble kept the virus largely at bay.
Taliban say they took Panjshir, last holdout Afghan province (AP) The Taliban said on Monday they have taken control of Panjshir province north of Kabul, the last holdout of anti-Taliban forces in the country and the only province the Taliban had not seized during their blitz across Afghanistan last month. Thousands of Taliban fighters overran eight districts of Panjshir overnight, according to witnesses from the area who spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing for their safety. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid issued a statement, saying Panjshir was now under control of Taliban fighters.
Taliban stop planes of evacuees from leaving but unclear why (AP) At least four planes chartered to evacuate several hundred people seeking to escape the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan have been unable to leave the country for days, officials said Sunday, with conflicting accounts emerging about why the flights weren’t able to take off as pressure ramps up on the United States to help those left behind to flee. An Afghan official at the airport in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif said that the would-be passengers were Afghans, many of whom did not have passports or visas, and thus were unable to leave the country. He said they had left the airport while the situation was sorted out. The top Republican on the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, however, said that the group included Americans and they were sitting on the planes, but the Taliban were not letting them take off, effectively “holding them hostage.” He did not say where that information came from. It was not immediately possible to reconcile the accounts.
Guinea’s new junta leaders seek to tighten grip on power (AP) Guinea’s new military leaders sought to tighten their grip on power after overthrowing President Alpha Conde, warning local officials that refusing to appear at a meeting convened Monday would be considered an act of rebellion against the junta. After putting the West African nation back under military rule for the first time in over a decade, the junta said Guinea’s governors were to be replaced by regional commanders. A nightly curfew was put in place, and the country’s constitution and National Assembly were both dissolved. Conde’s removal by force Sunday came after the president sought a controversial third term in office last year, saying the term limits did not apply to him.

Paris-based hairstylist Ciara Costenoble talks about her experiences and says Emily got it right - kinda
EPISODE 59
Paris-based hairdresser Ciara Costenoble, grew up in Alexandria, Virginia and once we delve into her morning routine, we take it right back to those early days.
Ciara shares some beautiful memories of being inspired by her grandmother, Hope, who loved to dress up at any opportunity, even if she was just picking up the mail or going to the pharmacy. Ciara watched her grandmother do her skincare and apply her Mary Kay makeup and, later on, realised that it was about more than expression - in fact it was more in an effort to form some kind of resilience around the colourism that was prevalent within society. We talk about how colourism can show up and about Ciara's first hair experiments - at the age of 7.
Pretty much a tomboy when she was younger, it was only once Ciara began working in a salon at 14 that she gained an insight into what other girls and women were doing with their hair, and also how boys would look at girls who dressed in a more feminine style.
We also discuss the controversial Netflix show Emily in Paris, and Ciara talks about how it’s really not a true example of exactly who is moving to Paris from the States, as in: it’s not just white people who choose to travel and explore, duh. She’s also very vocal about her views on being an American in Paris. Of course we touch on the cult of the French pharmacy and Ciara shares that she’s learned to embrace a more simple beauty routine since moving to France.
We also talk about how Ciara has learned to take time to romance herself during lockdown. Honestly, I couldn't have chosen a better way to close 2020. I am so grateful for the fact that you choose to listen to BeautyMe, and can't wait to see you in 2021. Take care of yourselves and see you on the other side.
