Krakatoa

One of my favorite days in Indonesia was when we took this epic journey to Krakatoa Island. Krakatoa is a teeny tiny island between Java and Sumatra. We had to wake up before the sun and take a 3 hour car ride from Karawaci, where we were staying, to the boat dock. Along the way, I watched as the landscape changed from a big city to the countryside. The roads weren’t paved and the locals set up their own toll roads as a way to beg for rupiah. Kids were running barefoot in the streets and their parents were burning trash in the front yard. The car abruptly stopped because of some traffic buildup and once we started inching forward I realized there was a sort of drive-by food market. 

Here’s a glimpse of life in a little place my iPhone told me is called Kota Serang: 

We eventually made it to the dock and hopped on a boat with three locals. One was our tour guide, one was the captain and the third guy was charged with removing the garbage that kept getting stuck in the propellers. We sped through the Sunda Strait and after a 2 hour bumpy ride, we could see Krakatoa in the distance. 

We’re getting closer...

We finally made it and after falling into a small crevice next to the engine/propeller and requiring the garbage man to pull me out (ugh), I stepped onto the black sand beach. 

Our tour guide took us as far up the volcano as we could go - I forgot to mention that Krakatoa is an active volcano! We didn’t bring any hiking boots so I had to trek up this hot sandy monster hill with flip flops. Idiot. It was worth it though! The closer we got, we could see steam and smoke spewing from the top.

Check out all those lava rocks. The last time the volcano blew was in 2014. 

Here I’m standing on the side of the volcano looking over at a sister island that used to be a volcano a bazillion years ago. 

We ate lunch on the beach and headed over to the island across the way for some snorkeling. Before we headed home our guides took us for a loop around Krakatoa. 

All in all it was such a fun adventure. We definitely spent more time getting to and from the island, but isn’t it supposed to be all about the journey? 

Jakarta is a pretty special place. I can’t wait to go back! Next stop, Bali.

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office on Sunday expressed its sadness over the loss of precious lives in a tsunami following a volcanic eruption in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait.

Anak Krakatau (aka Anak Krakatoa) is still erupting and still posing a danger to people on the shores of Java and Sumatra bordering the Sunda Strait. According to Inverse (and reported elsewhere): Indonesia is reeling in the aftermath of the Anak Krakatau eruption of December 22, which killed at least 430 people after triggering an enormous tsunami and left thousands missing or injured. When a 158-acre chunk of the volcano’s crater crashed into the ocean, it precipitated 10-foot-tall waves, which collided into villages along the Sunda Strait. Devastating as the disaster has been, experts said on Thursday that it isn’t over yet. “Since Dec. 23, activity has not stopped,” said Antonius Ratdomopurbo, secretary of Indonesia’s geological agency, reported Reuters. “We anticipate a further escalation.” “We anticipate a further escalation.” The alert level for the volcano, known also as Krakatoa, has been raised to the second-highest, and the exclusion zone has been extended to a 3-mile radius around the island; flights have been warned to steer clear of the ash.
