reconnecting to therianthropy ideas

hello y'all! first post! so recently i had a friend ask me how they can get reconnected to therianthropy, so i made a list and i thought i'd post it here!

-take walks in the woods or wild space -listen to a stream running while sleeping -sometimes when i sleep, i curl up into a ball on top of my covers -watch documentaries about your theriotype -go swimming in a lake and play on the shore if you have an aquatic theriotype -listen to your theriotype’s vocals -eat meat, if you’re a carnivore, or eat a salad if you’re a herbivore -take a cold shower and pretend it’s a waterfall -i’m dragonkin and being on the prow of a boat feels an awful lot like flying, but other options are standing facing the wind with arms outstretched, watching flying POVs with a fan pointed at you, and daydreaming, i guess -make a mask out of cardboard or buy a base (it’s okay if you can’t!) -lay in the sun outside -play with a pet, if you have one -if you have a lupine theriotype, play Wolfquest 3 Anniversary Edition on Steam. i’ve heard it has amazing graphics and hunting! -chew on something rubbery. i have an inflated rubber egg that i love to chew on -make a tail out if yarn. it takes a LOT of time and effort, but it feels good once completed -put glow-in-the-dark stars on your ceiling to simulate the night sky -watch Wolfwalkers, Brother Bear, Nimona (all relate to shapeshifting into a creature) -read Warriors if you have a feline theriotype -read Nat. Geo. magazines and articles -i like wearing sunglasses on my head because it feels like i have ears, but you could also wear a hat or a headband -draw your theriotype -if you have a nocturnal theriotype, try pulling an all nighter (if your parents will let you) -try hunting one of your stuffed animals (close the door in case you shift -climb a tree! -look up videos on how to get a shift by meditating (i personally don’t meditate but i’ve heard it works) -if you’re home alone, put a bowl of water or soup on the floor and eat/drink it like your theriotype would -if you can, try to get a tag to hunt something for real! when i hunt, it really connects me to nature (if you can’t, don’t sweat it) -go on a hike and try to act like your theriotype -make a den in your room or backyard -paint rocks or shells -decorate your room to match your theriotype -do quads, if your body allows. don’t worry about having the perfect form or jumping high, just have fun! you feel more natural the more you do it (i find going up stairs or uphill to be easiest) -find alterhumans in your area and make a pack -look at therian boards and concept art on pinterest -make a paw imprint in clay then hang it up -make a hidden therian/otherkin symbol in your room

If anyone remembers way back at the beginning of this blog when I posted that list of MyNoise sound generators for otherkin, I recently (within the last year) discovered how to access the full list of composite generators, which are user-made and feature sounds compiled from other generators made into something new. So here’s a few of my favorites of those as suggestions:

“AI Dreams”: might be nice for an AI or other computer being; I actually made this one myself during a very strong AI flicker that I mistakenly thought was a kintype.

“Wasteland Radio”: maybe for fictionkin whose source is post-apocalyptic. I listened to this a lot during a Fallout fictionflicker. Also “Nuclear Ruins” is similar but, imo, much creepier, and I elected not to listen to it during my flicker, but it is very cool.

“Starport Terminal”: really really good for anyone from space. It really sounds like a realistic spaceport from a sci-fi universe full of aliens just living normal lives. I’m alienkind myself and I love this one more than any whimsical galactic-sounding soundscape. (Personally this is my favorite on MyNoise in general.)

“Glacier”: amazing for any arctic critters, especially aquatic ones because it really sounds like you’re swimming under the ice. Orcas, seals and polar bears are the main ones I can think of who might be interested in this but if there’s any Greenland shark or arctic shrimp therians out there, you should check this out too.

“Whispering Pines”: this one really takes me away and puts me in a raven’s happy place. Probably nice for other animals too, if your habitat is more northern; wolves, mountain lions, bears, etc.

“Sinister Ethereal Plane” is an interesting one that I think might be helpful to more incomprehensibly-inclined folk; fae, gods, benign eldritch beings, more traditional angels, etc. I find it soothing but I guess it could be more weird.

Seriously though, we just had a total hoot designing a queer flag heraldry system in the car, and I absolutely cannot show anybody it because I daren't face my inbox.

Some of the better ones include:

Lesbians - big cats. 2 crossed axes. A fist. Scissors.

Gay men - a background of yellow brick pattern, or red glitter. Cockrels, bears, swords. Two bears spooning.

Bisexuals - a hand grasping many spears. Unicorn. A horn. A pan or other cookware. Gay or lesbian symbols as appropriate.

Trans - moth, Butterfly, seahorse. Special symbols such as a syringe, scissor, phoenix or flames to denote some sort of physical transition.

To design a shield, decide what are the most essential parts of your identity, and combine. Don't forget a motto. You can place symbols above, on, or either side of the shield. Don't over clutter. Consider combining flag A with symbol B to communicate a whole identity. Consider using a pride flag but enhancing the size of the strip representing you (ie, use the trans pride flag but with a huge pink stripe to communicate "trans woman" specifically)

I see you uh, take questions? I have a similar question to the previous one, about dragonkin. Like the other anon, I've always loved dragons. I've even done dragonlike things, like lying in the sun for warmth, and other actions, and I often feel like a dragon. Would I be valid for being dragonkin, even if I don't have any phantom wings, or past life memories?

This is kind of a two-part answer, so bear with me.

First part: there’s no set of minimum criteria you have to fulfill to be “valid” in identifying as otherkin. The only criterion you need to meet is “identifying nonphysically as something other than human (partially or wholly).” Not all otherkin experience supernumerary phantom limbs. Not all otherkin experience past life memories (or even believe their kintype came from a past life). Not all otherkin experience species dysphoria. None of those things make them any less otherkin. If you feel that you are nonhuman in some regard, you can call yourself otherkin, full stop.

Second part: on that note, there is such a thing as healthy skepticism. I feel that it’s good to take time to think about your experiences and different explanations of them - and what you feel explains them best. Do you feel the explanation that fits you and your experiences the best is that you are a dragon? Or does that not quite sit right with you?

As always, my eternal advice is to read and research. Read the experiences of otherkin, especially dragons (and not just on Tumblr - go to forums, go to sites like tomorrowlands.org). See what resonates and what doesn’t.

(My opinions on how exactly questioning should be handled and which processes should be recommended are also sort of under review right now, so apologies if this isn’t quite as helpful as you’d hoped.)

Religion has always been weird. I’ve enjoyed studying the psychology of it and getting to know different cultures of it, especially through Abby’s piano jobs. I think I lost concentration after the dogs died, so I don’t remember caring much about the symbolism of the ferns.  But my perspective of religion has changed in various directions in the past few years. I remember in 2013 watching vlogbrother videos answering the question “do you believe in god?” and being somewhat disappointed in the lack of straightforward answer. I’m closer to where they are nowadays. There’s a bunch of different gods, and some prayer-answering ones are square circle level disprovable, some (guider of random genetic mutations who wanted humans to exist and makes heaven or whatever) are teapots in space levels believable, and some (the literal sun, who created and could destroy us) are proveable.  My time at the UU church kind of showed me how people can get something out of stories of all religions, and they’d talk about Jesus and whatever near Christmas, and other things near other religions’ holidays, but usually just kind of random stuff that people tend to find meaningful. It was helpful, and kind of gave me a better perspective on my own enjoyment of Five Iron Frenzy. I like what they feel, but can only relate to it metaphorically, but that’s okay.  The freaking otherkin also helped. I think I’ve posted about them here, but tldr: • some believe they’re other animals in a parallel world • some believe they were other animals in a past life • some relate to the traits they associate with certain animals • some believe they are possessed by the spirit of those animals The fun part is that they get along and rarely if ever argue in the facebook groups I’m a part of. I was expecting breathairian level irrationality, and kinda found it, but didn’t find anyone making themselves or others die, they were just supporting each other. They’d have epiphanies and understand themselves better than they did before using language that I couldn’t relate to to express feelings I could. Some Baha’ists say that all religions are different languages expressing the same truths. Dating a passively Christian person living in a country that still practices a variety of folk religions, uses spiritual language to talk about psychological phenomena, and gets something out of the Bible, it’s been kind of helpful to see things this way. I sort of agree with the language analagy, and have been getting better over the years at focusing on the point of what people are saying, even if the language has an element to it that I think is stupid and implies unrelated incorrect facts that aren’t actually important. Being possessed by a spirit is a rational way to see depression if you don’t assume the spirit is conscious and basically define spirit as what we define mental illness as now.  The otherkin/therians are great at this. Some guy will be like “I’m sad because my bear-kin is going through a hard time on the other plane,” and nobody corrects the fact that there’s no reason to believe that there’s another plane with a bear. The person is sad, likes bears, and needs support right now. I’ve gotten a bit more understanding of and patient people who believe stupid things, and less caring toward people who believe terrible things.  The epiphanies that Five Iron Frenzy dudes have when they realize that god still loves them is the same kind of thing as the guy who realizes he’s inhabited by the soul of a deer. FIF learned self compassion, which is awesome. They also believe in some weird stuff. I’ll be happy for the first bit. Guy now believes that gentleness is an essential part of his identity and he should aspire to live life as the person he feels most comfortable as. He also believes in some weird stuff. I’m happy for the first part.  So I think I’m better equipped to actually enjoy the ending of WtRFG than I was before. Partly because sadness doesn’t distract me anymore in the same way (lots to unpack there, but we’ll ignore that for now), but partly because I can see a message like “god will be happy with you” and interpret it in a way that parses out the good stuff I can be happy for and the weird stuff. I’ll interpret it metaphorically and ignore the rest, with whatever amount of spite my god-hating self feels inclined to have that day.
