“Same Time Next Year” follows Sumner, a hockey player on the brink of breaking into the NHL. With Sumner’s work visa about to expire, his only chance to stay in America and achieve his dream of going pro is to get a green card. Enter Britta, an ambitious waitress looking to become a part owner of the bar she works at. In exchange for the money she needs, Britta reluctantly agrees to marry Sumner, but the closer they become in preparation for their green card interview, the harder it is for them to keep their relationship solely contractual. 

Novellas can be challenging to write because they are shorter than novels, yet longer than short stories (typically being anywhere from 70 to 160 pages), but Tessa Bailey navigates the constraints beautifully. She tracks her characters’ fake marriage across the span of a year, cleverly homing in on specific moments in time that are sure to hold the attention of readers and further invest them in the development of Britta and Sumner’s relationship—like when Sumner insists on accompany Britta to a concert or when they went to their first family gathering as a “couple”.  Bailey also perfectly balances steamier scenes with more wholesome moments. 

By the time I got to the end, I wanted more, not because I was left unsatisfied (a feeling I often experience when reading novellas due to their brevity), but because I genuinely fell in love with the characters and their story.  I thoroughly enjoyed this little taste of what is to come in Bailey’s sports series and cannot wait for them to hit shelves!

Notes - Wow! My first audiobook! I actually found it hard to connect at first because I thought it’d be like watching something in the background, but I really have to focus when listening. So far I really like the book. The dynamic between Sumner and Britta is different from other books i’ve read, and I like how it stands out. The drama between Sumner’s work visa expiring and not being around the Britta anymore is interesting, and adds drama to the story. The proposition of Britta and Sumner getting married for his visa is so interesting, and i love a good fake marriage trope. I love that the family trauma is brought out. The spice of this book is brought out from the second chapter (very lightly) and it literally had me going “woooahhh okay” because I just wasn’t expecting it. Britta is so funny. I love the conversation she has with Sumner about marriage. You can tell she’s very afraid to open up, but she’s willing to do so for the green card. she HAS to in order to not get charged with fraud-- she has to get to know this man. The smut in this book is a little bit constant with Sumner, and I’m not really into it, i’m not gonna lie. I have no motivation with them yet, so it all feels very preempted. It’s in my face and I don’t know why because I barely know these characters. The time skips are a bit much for me (like the distance in the passage of time) but it makes sense why Tessa did this. Britta realizing she’s crushing on Sumner is really cute and I think their relationship dynamic is adorable. They’re there for each other, even when they don’t want to be necessarily. The conversation about Sumner’s grandparents was really heartfelt and sad, and it makes sense why both Britta and Sumner don’t have family in the seats. Britta because she’s scared to BE his family, and Sumner because of his grandmother’s death. I love how overprotective Sumner is over Britta, and it’s honestly done in a way that isn’t controlling or aggressive for once! Very very nice. The conversation at the concert is sooooo smutty and I’m finally starting to like it, like I finally understand why the characters should be together. The concert scene is sooo yummy and well written. I love how Sumner offers to commit to Britta in a different way, which gives her comfort in the relationship. It makes the sex between them make more sense in the end. I’ve gotta say.... listening to smut in audiobooks is very awkward! They are out here moaning on these tapes!! The writing is very good however, though i could do with a little more perspective from Britta. I’m genuinely glad that there’s no miscommunication trope at play here, and everyone properly talks to each other to work through the tough emotions. The talk of Britta’s trauma with relationships and meeting the family was actually really nice. There’s a little bit too much smut in my opinion, but I can see how somebody who likes spice would love a book like this. I’m just asexual! Sumner getting signed brought a lot of drama that i enjoyed, with Britta having to question where she stands in the relationship with her commitment issues. Britta going to the game where her father was showed how far she’s changed from the first chapters, when she was avoiding relationships and anything that reminded her of her dad. The last chapter is very cute, its a “couple month later” style epilogue where you get all the updates of their life, and we see how Britta has fully adapted to the relationship and is happy to be committed to Sumner. It’s a very sweet transition from the old Britta, and I just generally think that this was a VERY very cute story, i could just do without the spice levels it had.

1970 Glastonbury headliners

T.Rex

Originally The Kinks and Wayne Fontana were the main headline acts but these acts were replaced at short notice by Tyrannosaurus Rex, later known as T.Rex. Singer-songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan in 1967 formed the band and released four psychedelic folk albums under this name. T. Rex encountered a popularity in the UK comparable to that of the Beatles, with a run of eleven singles in the UK top ten. One of the most prominent acts in British popular culture, they scored four UK number one hits, "Hot Love", "Get It On", "Telegram Sam" and "Metal Guru".

David Bowie

David Bowie an English singer, songwriter and actor took on the Pyramid stage as 1971 Glastonbury headliner. During his lifetime, his record sales, estimated at 140 million worldwide, made him one of the world's best-selling music artists. Hawkwind an English Rock Band performed the headline act for the 1981 Glastonbury festival. The singer, songwriter and guitarist David Brock formed the band in November 1969. The band have incorporated different styles into their music, including hard rock, progressive rock and psychedelic rock.

New Order

New Order an English Rock Band also performed a headline act at Glastonbury Festival along with Hawkwind in 1981. The Band formed in 1980, currently comprising Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert, Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman. The band's 1983 hit "Blue Monday", the best-selling 12-inch single of all time, is one example of how their sound became increasingly uptempo and electronic.

Van Morrison

Sir George Ivan Morrison, Northern-Irish singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and producer performed the headline act for Glastonbury 1982. UB40 an English reggae and pop band was among the Headliners for 1983. The band has had more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart. Four times nominee for Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album , and also nominated at the Brit Award for Best British Group in 1984. One of the world's best-selling music artists, UB40 have sold over 70 million records.

Joe Cocker

Joe Cocker an English singer and musician known for his gritty voice, spasmodic body movement in performance was the headliner for Glasto fest 1985. Cocker's cover of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends" reached number one in the UK in 1968. Cocker was the recipient of several awards, including a 1983 Grammy Award for his US number one "Up Where We Belong," a duet with Jennifer Warnes. In 1993 Cocker was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male, in 2007 was awarded a bronze Sheffield Legends plaque in his hometown and in 2008 he received an OBE at Buckingham Palace for services to music. They have also achieved worldwide success as a live band, performing in over 50 countries and on six continents, headlining venues such as Madison Square Garden and Wembley Stadium.

The Who

Final headliner for 2007 were the Who, performed the headline act on the pyramid stage on Sunday night. The Who are considered as one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century, selling over 100 million records worldwide.

The American rock Band Kings of Leon, was the first headliner of 2008 and took on the Pyramid Stage on Friday 27, June Night. Kings of Leon achieved initial success in the United Kingdom with nine Top 40 singles, two BRIT Awards in 2008, and all three of the band's albums at the time peaked in the top five of the UK Albums Chart. Their third album, Because of the Times, also reached the number one spot. The group has 12 Grammy Award nominations, including 4 wins.

He is one of the best-selling musicians of all time, having sold more than 100 million records, while receiving 21 Grammy Awards for his music. Rolling Stone ranked three of his albums—Reasonable Doubt (1996), The Blueprint (2001), and The Black Album (2003)—among the 500 greatest albums of all time in 2014. As an artist, he holds the record for most number one albums by a solo artist on the Billboard 200 with 13.

The Verve

English Rock band The Verve the final headliners of the festival and performed at the Pyramid stage on Sunday Night. The band's commercial breakthrough was the 1997 album Urban Hymns, one of the best-selling albums in UK Chart history. . In 1998, the band won two Brit Awards—winning Best British Group, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in March. And in February 1999, "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

The American singer, songwriter and Actress headlined the Pyramid stage for the first time on Sunday night. Throughout her career, she has sold over 100 million records as a solo artist, and a further 60 million with Destiny's Child, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She has 22 Grammy Awards in her awards list and is the most nominated woman in the award's history. With 24 wins, at the MTV Video Music Awards, Beyonce tops the list.

The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones Second headliner of the year took the Pyramid stage on June 27, Saturday night. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them fourth on the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list and their estimated album sales are above 250 million. They have released 30 studio albums, 18 live albums and numerous compilations.

Mumford & Sons

Mumford & Sons performed the final headline act of the year at The Pyramid Stage on Sunday night. Mumford & Sons are an English rock band from London, formed in 2007. The band received eight total Grammy nominations for Babel and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The band also won the Brit Award for Best British Group in 2013.

She charmed an enormous afternoon crowd in the Sunday sunshine as she headlined the Pyramid Stage. Parton is the most honored female country performer of all time. She has had 25 songs reach No. 1 on the Billboard country music charts, a record for a female artist (tied with Reba McEntire). She has 41 career top 10 country albums, a record for any artist. And she has 110 career charted singles over the past 40 years. She has garnered nine Grammy Awards, two Academy Award nominations, ten Country Music Association Awards, seven Academy of Country Music Awards, three American Music Awards, and is one of only seven female artists to win the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year Award. Parton has received 47 Grammy nominations.

Florence and the Machine

Florence and the Machine replaced the Foo Fighters as First headliner when Dave Grohl broke his leg jumping off stage in Norway and the Foos were forced to withdraw. And the band headlined the Friday night. Florence and the Machine is the nominee of eight Grammy Awards including Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. Additionally, the band performed at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards and the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Concert.

Kanye West

Kanye West American rapper pull of the what Emily Eavis later called “the bravest performance I have ever seen on the Pyramid Stage”. West is among the most acclaimed musicians of the 21st century, and is one of the best-selling artists of all time, having sold more than 32 million albums and 100 million digital downloads worldwide. He has won a total of 21 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists of all time and the most Grammy-awarded artist to have debuted in the 21st century. Three of his albums are in the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list of Rolling Stone's 2012.
