Summerlight… and Then Comes the Night is the kind of film that refuses to be boxed in, and that's exactly what makes it special. Directed by Elfar Adalstein and based on Jón Kalman Stefánsson's novel, this Icelandic tragicomedy juggles surreal magic, the messiness of small-town life, and deep human tenderness. It’s not your run-of-the-mill indie, nor is it a sweeping epic—it’s an intimate portrait of village life, where the mundane and the mystical coexist in a strange, beautiful dance. It’s one of those movies that, if you give it the chance, will have plenty to say—and it's well worth listening to. Set in a small Icelandic village that’s far more complex than its quiet exterior suggests, Summerlight dives into the tangled web of the people who call it home. Everyone knows everyone, and secrets are more like shared stories than whispered confidences. It’s a place where heartbreak, joy, and odd occurrences intermingle—where an otherwise sleepy village turns out to be a stage for some of the most unexpected and touching moments of human connection. Adalstein captures the spirit of Stefánsson’s prose, creating a film that stitches together the ordinary with glimpses of the extraordinary. The Fabric of Small-Town LifeA Delicate Balance of Tragedy and HumorSummerlight is A Patchwork of LivesIceland as a CharacterWhy Summerlight Works The Fabric of Small-Town Life The plot of Summerlight doesn’t follow a straight line. It’s more like a collage of moments—a kaleidoscope of memories pieced together. Think of it like sitting on a front porch, sipping tea, and watching life pass by, with all of its unexpected twists, deep laughs, and bittersweet sighs. The characters are what bring the village to life. The beauty of Summerlight is that it doesn’t attempt to neatly wrap up each storyline. It embraces the ambiguity, much like life itself, leaving the audience to find meaning in the pieces they are given. A Delicate Balance of Tragedy and Humor Summerlight shines in its balancing act between humor and the ever-present shadow of tragedy. Iceland, with its endless daylight in the summer and pitch-black winter nights, is the perfect metaphor for the film’s duality. Loneliness is a theme that runs deep throughout the story, but just as often, there are moments of absurdity that keep it from feeling too heavy. Summerlight is A Patchwork of Lives Summerlight is filled with characters that aren’t meant to be heroes; they’re just people—beautifully flawed, often contradictory, and driven by desires that they can’t always articulate. Hrefna, the Widow, becomes the quiet heart of the village’s empathy. Even in her solitude, she reaches out to others—a garden party here, a spontaneous tea invitation there. These tiny gestures are what give her strength. She becomes a lighthouse in a storm, her house literally lighting up the dark, guiding the lost souls around her. Iceland as a Character Adalstein doesn’t just set the story in Iceland—he makes Iceland an integral character. The midnight sun, the sprawling fields, the distant mountains—all of it feels alive. The landscape isn’t just a backdrop; it’s a reflection of the characters’ inner worlds. The wide-open spaces and long days create a sense of timelessness, where days blur together, and the line between reality and the fantastical fades. The film’s muted color palette evokes the feeling of flipping through an old photo album. Blues, greens, and grays dominate, giving the visuals a sense of nostalgia, even as you’re watching something new unfold. There’s an ever-present juxtaposition between the harsh beauty of Iceland and the intimacy of small-town life, and Adalstein’s camera captures both with equal tenderness. Why Summerlight Works Summerlight… and Then Comes the Night isn’t interested in giving you a neat, wrapped-up story with all the answers. It’s a film that breathes, ebbing and flowing with its characters’ lives. Its magic is in its authenticity—life isn’t linear, and people aren’t perfect. It’s in the small moments that the film finds its depth, in the tiny gestures and quiet connections that make up a life. The humor in Summerlight is never mean-spirited. It’s dry, yes, but it’s humor born from understanding. It’s the kind of laughter that comes from recognizing ourselves in the absurdity of the everyday—the way we chase things we can never catch or find ourselves in ridiculous situations that somehow hold profound meaning. And then there’s the ending—a quiet, seemingly anticlimactic note that leaves you with more questions than answers. But that’s exactly the point. The film isn’t about closure; it’s about the journey, the small, luminous moments that define us. It leaves you feeling like you’ve just spent time in this village, walked its streets, listened to its people, and glimpsed a little bit of magic in their lives. Summerlight… and Then Comes the Night is a love letter to life’s oddities—an ode to the ways in which we stumble through, sometimes getting it right, sometimes failing spectacularly, but always, somehow, moving forward. It’s a film that captures the wonder and the weight of living, reminding us that even in the most mundane places, there’s magic to be found. You just have to be willing to see it. Summerlight...and Then Comes the Night is now available to rent and buy at Fandango at Home

Singer-Songwriter Matías Roden Introduces Himself to the World on Debut The Plea EP feat. Hopeful Focus Track “Glowing”
Matías Roden is a Peruvian-Canadian singer-songwriter living in Vancouver, BC. Signed to Light Organ Records, his first single, “Snow Angel,” was released in November 2023 and followed by two more singles in 2024. Roden has performed at Music Waste and Khastahlano festivals since, as well as the upcoming Summerlight Festival, and his full-length debut album is set for release in early 2025.
Debut EP, The Plea, was recorded at Vancouver’s 604 Studios and serves as Roden’s formal introduction to this world; the official start of his journey as an artist. The Plea symbolizes a mixture of helplessness and resilience – it’s what happens when you’re young and you lose hope in the things that you thought mattered in your life.
Focus track, “Glowing,” is the moment where things start to turn a bit more hopeful. After a devastating heartbreak, Roden starts to learn to trust someone else and open up a bit more. Produced by Louise Burns, the song combines two very different elements of British pop music from the 80s and 90s – jazzy sophisti-pop and breakbeat.
I think the classic ‘quarter life crisis’ for a lot of young people feels like you’re being put on trial by your own hopes and dreams and others’ expectations for your life. It can feel overwhelming to realize that maybe your life isn’t going in exactly the direction you wanted it to go. So The Plea is a play on words of a plea deal at a trial where you’re both at the mercy of forces beyond your control but also wanting to defiantly assert yourself. It’s like I’m saying ‘I will get my life back together, I will get over this heartbreak or over this failure to live out my hopes and dreams, I will make them happen.’

A well-curated fragrance wardrobe allows you to express different facets of your personality and adapt to various settings with ease. Here, we will guide you through the essentials of building a versatile and sophisticated fragrance wardrobe.

Determine which categories resonate with you the most. Visit a perfume boutique and sample different fragrances from each family. Pay attention to how each scent makes you feel and how it evolves on your skin.
Consider the Occasion
Your fragrance choices should align with the context in which they will be worn. A balanced wardrobe includes scents suitable for various occasions:

Caring for Your Fragrance Wardrobe
Proper Storage
To maintain the integrity of your perfumes, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keeping them in their original boxes or a dedicated perfume cabinet can help protect them from environmental damage.
Application Tips
Apply perfume to pulse points such as the wrists, neck, and behind the ears. This allows the fragrance to develop fully and last longer. For a more subtle scent, spray the perfume into the air and walk through the mist.
Rotating Your Fragrances
Seasonal Rotation
Regularly rotate your fragrances to align with the seasons. This not only ensures that you are using scents that complement the weather but also helps you fully enjoy the variety in your collection.
Daily and Occasion-Based Rotation
Change your perfume based on your daily activities and special occasions. Having a variety of fragrances allows you to tailor your scent to your mood and the setting, enhancing your overall presence.

Fragrance trends evolve, just like fashion. Stay informed about the latest launches and popular notes. This can be achieved by following perfume blogs, joining fragrance forums, and subscribing to newsletters from your favorite perfume houses.
Experiment with Layering
Layering fragrances is a creative way to develop a unique scent profile. Start with a base fragrance and add another to enhance or complement its notes. Experimenting with different combinations can lead to discovering a signature scent that is uniquely yours.
Sustainable and Ethical Choices
Eco-Friendly Brands
Consider incorporating eco-friendly and sustainable brands into your wardrobe. These brands prioritize environmentally responsible practices and often use natural ingredients.
Cruelty-Free Options
Support cruelty-free brands that do not test their products on animals. This ethical choice aligns with a growing consumer preference for humane practices in the beauty industry.

By understanding your scent preferences, considering the occasion, and exploring a variety of fragrances, you can create a collection that enhances your daily life and reflects your unique personality. Remember to care for your perfumes properly and stay open to new trends and experiences in the world of fragrances.

The Shattered Tower / The First Well
Exchanging the dread unto the both of our shoulders was my first mistake and yet my last blessing. The angel I once harbored over my shoulder, his gaze upon my summerlight feathers akin to the most valuable of comforts thus far in this coil of the ephemeral flesh. But as it is in this mortality; it was time I am to lose something I initially amounted to a core to my soul. A price for my aspirations into the embers of the light which greeted me when my past self watched above within the pits below Tartarus.
I sent the imp home with the prayers of the abyss, and hence, the blessing that now frees my form, and enacts the furnace I call my heart of a hundred affections. My decisions are unclouded, and my talons; unsteady. The saddest moment of my life thus far comes. Akin to reflex of limbs in contortion, webs of muscle and and nerves which draw back the bowstring, resting an arrow ablaze of spirit alchemy.
"I bid you farewell. My love." My beak murmured through the steam of my hurt evaporating from my tearducts. My chest fell heavy, but my mind perceived, the arrow exited my longing touch, piercing the tower. Magics roared with the extremes alike the azure behemoth from the innermost depths of the void, the well that resided within the tower bursting to life with the vibrance of a repressed aurora.
I had only realized within the sight of neutral calamity that my voice wailed with pain I couldn't understand, my memory wiped of the traces of the parted lover. My soul and my mind forgot, my body wiped his memory from me supposedly, and yet over the fact that his existence now was nothing more than a fact to the path of mine; a variable which had once been positive. My heart remembered, nay; it ached. Tearing itself apart, a smokescreen of phoenix tears shrouding my visage. Kneeling, watching the tower we built now crumble.
