hi! i've been very wistfully admiring of your cooking and baking prowess but i'm about at the level of "pasta, vegetable, protein, jarred sauce" at this point and can't imagine getting to where you are. are there recipes you'd recommend for beginners? who hypothetically maybe have never used their oven?
Personally, right now I'm just about in the same spot---my desire to cook things has dropped precipitously, I've survived the last few weeks on salads and roasted chicken and crackers with cheese. But the good news is that there are plenty of options for the lazy cook! And the even better news is that I have all sorts of recipes for you...
DO NOT MAKE ME USE THE OVEN, SO HELP ME GOD
Quinoa Tabbouleh (lots of chopping, but afterwards you can make a giant vat of it and eat it slowly over the course of a week...)
Greek Tuna Salad (throw a bunch of cans together in a giant bowl, then eat it on lettuce)
White Bean and Broccoli Dip with Pesto (I make this by the bucket in the summer, though typically I use parmesan instead of nutritional yeast---and I eat it off of rice cakes!)
Pesto Gnocchi (green beans, cherry tomatoes, and delicious, delicious gnocchi, all smothered in pesto. Literally, where would you go wrong?)
SANDWICHES ARE GROWN-UP FOOD!!
Spicy Vegan Wraps (I am not personally vegan, but I make this all the fucking time)
Lemon Radish Tartine
Roasted Tomato Tartine (....listen you call it a "tartine" and I immediately get really interested)
Chicken Avocado Wraps (not something I make too often, but incredibly easy and mostly about shredding your chicken properly)
I HAVE EXACTLY ONE (1) POT
Quinoa-Kale Bowl (unbelievably easy, and the result is delicious)
BBQ Chicken Quinoa Casserole (this in particular makes for really great leftovers---especially if work has a microwave)
Dump & Bake Chicken and Rice (sometimes you just want a bunch of stuff covered in sauce and it's warm and delicious.)
Smothered Mushrooms and Kale (it's got nutrients and also tastes pretty good)
KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES (I.E., WHAT TO COOK WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING COMPANY)
Beet Bruschetta with Goat Cheese and Basil (I have made this for multiple different groups, as well as for myself, and every time---EVERY TIME---it's amazing.)
One-Pot Pasta with Sausage and Squash (slightly more sophisticated than the one-pot recipes above---but so fancy! and delicious.)
Puff Pastry Fruit Braid (did you think I'd get through this entire list without a single dessert? this is probably the most adaptable, consistently delightful recipe I have---and incredibly, incredibly easy to use, manipulate, or do whatever you want with. Features helpful pictures, and I think I've used every fruit combination you can imagine.)

Looking for a Shabbat dinner centerpiece or a hearty midweek meal? Picture cubes of eggplant, zucchini, bell peppers, tomatoes and potatoes cooked together to create that special harmony only veggies that grew together in the sun achieve. Youâre thinking of ratatouille, right? But what I have in mind is a heartier dish from Romania and Bulgaria called ghiveci or guvech.
Romanian ghiveci and Bulgarian guvech are indeed very similar to the famous ratatouille, but being peasantâs food, theyâre more rustic and substantial. The veggies for guvech are cut into large, uneven chunks, and can be cooked all together at once, while for ratatouille, each component is fried separately before they are combined. This makes guvech preparation much easier, and allows for creative improvisations; you can easily add any vegetables in season. Besides the mandatory eggplant, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes and potatoes, green beans or okra are common. Guvech is seasoned very simply with salt, black pepper and occasionally paprika, to let the produce shine. The Bulgarian version is cooked with fatty meat, while most Romanian versions are vegan.
âIn Bulgaria, guvech used to be cooked in a clay pot called gyuveche,â Etti Ben Yosef, a Bulgarian Jew who lives in Israel, told me. âThe stew was cooked in the oven for many hours at low temperature.âÂ
But these days, when Ben Yosef makes guvech for Shabbat dinner, she uses a pressure cooker to precook the beef short ribs before adding them to the vegetables. Then, she cooks the entire stew on the stove for a long time, putting it in the oven for the final hour to give it a nice crust. She feels lucky to share the recipe with her adult children. âI keep the tradition so the kids will remember,â she said.
Guvechâs origins can be traced to the Ottoman Empire that ruled the Balkan region for hundreds of years. The original Turkish dish, called gĂźveç, is cooked in a wide, clay dish by the same name. Itâs very similar to the Bulgarian guvech and includes chicken, lamb or beef. There are many other variations of the dish throughout the Balkans. Bosnian ÄuveÄ or djuvec is the name of a clay pot as well as a veggie casserole thatâs cooked with rice; Greek giouvetsi is also cooked with rice. In Romania, the eggplant-tomato version is considered summer ghiveci, while winter ghiveci is prepared with carrots, cabbage, cauliflower and mushrooms.Â
Bulgarian Sephardi Jews and Romanian Ashkenazi Jews brought guvech to Israel (where itâs pronounced âghe-vechâ) and made the dish widely popular. No wonder, given that eggplant and tomatoes are so beloved in Israel and are of such high quality. Early Israeli versions can be found in Molly Bar Davidâs âFolkloric Cookbookâ from 1964. The first version includes 14 different vegetables (including celery root and cauliflower) and meat. The second version is for Romanian ghiveci thatâs baked with a whole fish on top.
The vegetarian Romanian version is probably most common in Israel nowadays. And although it is traditionally served over rice, I like to serve it on another Romanian staple, mamaliga. Itâs the definition of comfort food.Â
This recipe is the Bulgarian version of guvech that includes meat. You can make the recipe vegetarian by simply omitting the meat. The rest of the ingredients and instructions stay the same.
Notes:
It is recommended, and easy, to add any seasonal vegetables to the basic guvech. Consider adding: 1 lb butternut squash or sweet potato, cut into ½-inch dice; ½ lb whole okra, stems removed; or ½ lb green beans, cut into 1-inch pieces.
You can cook the meat, if using, up to two days in advance. Store the cooked meat in the fridge with the cooking liquid. Before using, remove from the fridge and discard the fat on the top of the pot (the fat will be solid and white in color).Â
Guvech keeps in the fridge for up to four days.

Part 8 for @wrecked-fuse âs pocketverse đšđš
~ Part 7 + ART!!! ~
~ on ao3 ~
⢠⢠â˘
Billy could not claim to have ever hung out at the Harrington residence. He had moved to Hawkins after Steve removed his crown and all interest in being Hawkinsâ party king.
So the circumstances of walking into Steveâs house with two voices yell-singing out of a shoebox were not what Billy would have expected.
âOkay, little dudes. Itâs food time,â Steve announced on his way to the kitchen.
Robin collapsed right onto the couch and turned the television on. Unsure what else to do with himself, Billy sat on the loveseat adjacent to the other couch. Then he asked, âIs it a good idea to have them in the kitchen?â
Robin answered, âThey like having tasks. Little B, especially. Getting him to sit still is like a magic trick.â
Her gaze swept up with Billy standing to join Steve in the kitchen. âYou antsy?â
He smiled venomously. âI think itâs rational to not trust anyone with a mini me.â
Her eyes rolled but her voice remained understanding. âIf anyoneâs capable of taking care of those little guys, itâs Steve. But by all means,â and she waved him away.
Billy navigated around the island counter to find his smaller self and the matching Steve standing on the pages of a cookbook. Larger Steve seemed to be trying and failing to sell them on mushrooms.
âItâs gway, Steve,â little Billy scolded over crossed arms. âWho wants gway food?â
âYou donât even notice it when itâs deep fried and covered in tomato sauce,â Steve reasoned, but the little ones moved out of his way to let him turn the page.
Large Billy leaned an elbow on the counter as they scrutinized the tomatoes stuffed with rice. âYouâll have better luck with that. Or Mexican food.â
Little Billy gazed up at him. âWhatâs Meckwican?â
âItâs colorful.â
âI like colwors.â
âI thought you might,â Billy confirmed with a smirk to Steve. âWhoâs ordering?â
Steve took a deep breath and pushed off the counter to grab the collection of paper restaurant menus shoved between the refrigerator and the toaster. âRob, what do you want?â
âChicken sopes and a taco salad.â
âIâm not buying you two meals.â
âThe salad is for tomorrow,â she reasoned.
âOne bean burrito, coming right up,â Steve sassed, but his attention on the menu drifted up to little Steve and Billy climbing over the apples and pears in the fruit bowl like boulders. âCould you teach them how to swim?â
Big Billyâs eyes swung to him. âExcuse me?â
âIâve got an old Barbie swimming pool - donât look at me like that. Will you do it or not? It would save me the risk of a heart attack whenever they need a bath.â
Billy tipped his head to the side, not sparing Steve even a little bit. âWhat were you doing with Barbies, Steve?â
âThis might not be relatable since youâre used to the ocean, but for a long time, I was the pool guy. The poolâs always been my ticket to making friends...or so I thought. Whatever. One summer, the only neighbor kids I had around me were girls. So I got a pool for their dolls. Are you a swimming instructor or not?â
Billy sighed and looked at his smaller self sitting on a pear like it were a horse and taking bites out of it. âI can get them started.â
Steve ordered their food and disappeared for a few minutes to get the small swimming pool out of storage. He cleaned it off in the sink, filled it with warm water, and Billy marveled, âYou know, I wouldâve said we could just use a casserole dish, but the slide and stairs are smart.â
Little Steveâs face lifted up to him, a blush making his cheeks go rosy as he smiled. âSmarwt Stevie.â
Big Steve waved some bathing suits in the air. âAre we skinny dipping or do you wanna change clothes?â
Billyâs eyes widened. âWhereâd you get those? The sixties?â
Steve exhaled heavily. âWe may or may not have a small doll collection, so what?â
âThatâs such a rich people thing.â
âYeah, well, they deserve a change of clothes and this is one less thing I have to explain to my mom when she looks at my card statements. Okay, B and Steve. Do you want the oranges or the flowers?â
He held up the swimming costumes for them to see and decide. All of a sudden, small Billy looked bashful as he tucked his chin and rolled his lips. Steve, meanwhile, hopped off the fruit bowl and pointed. â âWanges! Can I? Oh...Biwwy? Do you want the âwanges?â
He rubbed his tummy and admitted, âI want the fwowers.â
Large Billyâs brows pinched a little but he stayed quiet as big Steve encouraged, âYou want the flowers one? Thatâs okay. It goes with your eyes.â
His lashes batted as he blinked up at him. âWeally?â
âYeah,â Steve encouraged, âand theyâre the same size. You can switch the next time you go swimming.â
Billy reached up for his swimsuit and they went to change in their shoebox. The larger Billy wondered aloud, âThey have a sense of privacy?â
Steve shrugged. âThereâs nothing wrong with wanting to see themselves first before us.â
When they emerged, Steve spooned water over the slide. The little ones climbed the ladder and went down it together as if they rode a sled instead of a slide. The pool was shallow enough for them to stand, providing big Steve the relief he needed to answer the door. Robin followed behind him to help carry the bags, and they set up their feast on the island counter.
Billy had to use his Rec Center ID card as a floating board, but it fit both of them length-wise as they practiced their kicks. âGood job, guys. How about another ride on the slide while I get my food.â
Steve only just got a dishtowel down so they didnât slip on their way around the pool. Robin passed Billy his bag and he held a nacho chip out for the little ones to take a bite at the top of the slide.
Big Steve scolded, âArenât you supposed to wait thirty minutes between swimming and eating or something?â
âI think theyâll be okay,â Billy disregarded, crunching loudly on his chips. âSwimming 101 is just getting comfortable in the water. So...isnât this supposed to be a movie night?â
âMovwie! Movwie! Movwie!â the little Steve and Billy chanted, thoroughly locked in chasing each other down the slide and back around.
Big Steve nodded over his burrito. âWhen they start to slow down...then the movie seals the deal.â
Billy snorted softly and kept providing a nacho station for them to run past. Eventually, the exercise and food did take their toll, and they collapsed on the dishtowel. Given their old school, linen swimsuits, they dried off pretty fast, but little Steve eventually sat up and started patting Billyâs hair. The larger Billy observed this as the smaller one whined a tired sound.
âBiwwy, donât get sick.â
âI wonâ get sick. Thatâs what Stevieâs always sayinâ.â
However, big Steve seconded with a restaurant napkin in hand. âGimme those ears.â
Little Billy sat up in a huff, but sat still for Steve to gently push the napkin against his ears to siphon the water out of them. Then he folded it to get into the nooks and crannies of his ears and jaw. âThank you, B. Okay, you next.â
That rosy hue filled little Billyâs cheeks as he mumbled a weak, âYouârwe wewlcome.â
Little Steve, meanwhile, stood up tall, blissful in his pampering. âStevie? Can we have the honey tea?â
â âCourse you can. Go with Billy to the coffee table. He and Rob will get the movie going.â
It was little Steveâs turn to blossom a pink hue as they climbed onto Billyâs palms. They planted their butts down and held onto each other as Billy magic carpeted them to the setup of plushies on the coffee table. Small Steve gingerly stepped off his hand with a bashful, âThankwou, Biwwy.â
âYouâre welcome,â he answered quietly -Â
Only to glare at Robin, who sat on the couch behind him. âYouâre allowed to like them. I wonât spill.â
Small Billy lingered on the hand as he exclaimed, âSpiww what?â
She segued smoothly, âWonât spill that we got Indiana Jones to watch. That is, if itâs not too scary.â
Billy finally got off the hand with a scoff. âScawy? We watched the wed buwll and that wasnât scawy.â
Little Steve perked up from the fluff of an otter. âIt was a wittle scawy.â
âWe can fast forward through the scary parts,â Robin promised, and slotted the VHS into the player. But as soon as she turned back around, her eyes widened. âUh oh.â
âI knew it!â cried Billy from the doll box that had been placed on the coffee table. Little Billy climbed out, grinning victoriously with the tiny whip in hand and the hat on his head. âIâm weady!â
Robin glanced up at Steve in the kitchen, too busy trying to mix a safe temperature of water and honey together. âUh, B? Can I talk to you about that - No no nonono...â
âHey! Wobin? What gives?â little Billy exclaimed when she pinched the whip to keep him from waving it around.
âB, Iâm sorry, but Steve doesnât want you to have that.â
âWell Stevie can kiss my ass!â
That got a rankled Steve to come out of his otter plush. âBiwwy. Be nice.â
Robin corralled, âBilly, these things are use to hurt people. Theyâre not toys. Youâll see that in the movie.â
The fire started to go out of those blue eyes. âHurwt peopwle?â
She nodded gravely. âWe know you wonât mean to, but the whip might hurt your Steve. Even worse, youâre more likely to hurt yourself. Thatâs just how whips are. Big Steve loves you too much to tell you.â
His little body deflated as the large Steve finally arrived with a shot glass of honey tea. Seeing the body language on the coffee table, he sent inquiring looks to Billy and Robin.
Little Billy replied sadly, âDoes Indiana Jwones hurt himself?â
âNo, but itâs a movie, sweet B. Itâs not real. Youâre real and your Steveâs real. Thatâs way cooler than Indiana Jones.â
Big Steve sank onto the couch next to Billy. âWhatâs going on?â
âWhatâs going on, is that Iâm not sure I like being sweet talked by proxy.â
Finding that unhelpful, Steve leaned forward to intercept. âHey? Little man? Are you okay?â
Little Billy was absolutely not okay, because his bottom lip pushed up, his eyes went big, and he dropped the whip in order to run into Steveâs hands. Steve glared at Robin and mouthed, What did you do?
I handled it, she replied, dropping the whip back into the box.
Little Steve dragged his otter across the table, or as much as he could with stuff in his way. âStevie! Helwp!â
âOkay, okay, come here,â he soothed, picking up all three so small Billy and Steve could cuddle together against the soft fur while being held in big Steveâs arms. Little Billy bawled his eyes out during the opening of the movie, warranting big Steve to peek at the large Hargrove next to him. âItâs kind of wild how much their little bodies can hold onto. I thought youâd have stepped in by now.â
However, Billyâs mouth had been set in a hard line for a while now, and he shook his head. âIâm out of my element here, man.â
âNo crying kids at your pool?â
âI put shit heads in line. Beyond that, itâs the parents who cause more issues.â
Robin leaned across her armrest to query, âSteve, I thought you were lifeguard certified? You really were the pool guy for years, after all.â
âSure, but I think they like having Billy around.â
âI wike having big Biwwy awround.â
They looked down at little Steve, who was practically lying on top of small Billy, who blinked sometimes at the movie, but otherwise seemed too tired to really watch it.
âBiwwy does too. I know it. Biwwy wants to be stwong, like big Biwwy.â
But Billy shook his head. âIâm not the kind of guy to look up to, Harrington.â
Big Steve absorbed that in silence. For all of the Hawkinsâ renowned lifeguardâs peacocking, Billy had never said anything like that before.
âThen wook down to us. My Biwwyâs smarwt, and nice,â little Steve smiled and finished, âHawgwove.â
For a brief moment, Billy lost control of his face and his features crumpled, his eyes glossing over as his brows furrowed together. But he got a hand over his mouth, scrubbing his features clean. âJust watch the movie, short stack. Heâll feel better after he sleeps.â

So a bitch got the Dragon Age World of Thedas book and for once the bitch isnât me (itâs my partner)
And there are RECIPES, so you know what we did
This is the Dalish Deep Forest Comfort, but we ah⌠we have enhanced it to a wild degree
So Imma preface this with âwe have been making jokes about Lavellanâs parents being godawful cooks so he eats everything rawâ for months long before we got this book
(Thereâs a ficlet about it for our Four Heralds AU that may or may not be out already and if not will be soon)
But then we saw this recipe, and⌠guys? Guys? Let the Dalish have nice fucking things
This here is a spaghetti squash casserole, and one we made with one spaghetti squash instead of three
In the original recipe, the ingredients for this casserole are:
- 3 spaghetti squash
- 2 tbsp butter
- 4 cloves garlic FOR THREE ENTIRE SQUASH
- 2 cups mushrooms
- 2 cups spinach (they lie and pretend elfroot is spinach but elfroot is weed so this might explain the quantities)
- 2 cups diced tomatoes
- teeny bit dried red pepper
- pinch of parsley
- 3/4 cup of feta
- wildflower garnish
Let me tell you right fucking now I donât think they know how much you get out of a spaghetti squash because we put 2 cups tomato and spinach each in this baby with our 1 spaghetti squash and itâs perfect
So obviously we diverted right at the start, cooked the spaghetti squash with salt, pepper, roasted garlic and red pepper all rubbed in
And to the rest we added onions and a strawberry basil summer sausage that fuuuuuuuuuucks, herbs de Provence, more salt, pepper, olive oil, roasted garlic and red pepper, cracked garlic, allllll the sausage juices, and tossed her up
Crusted the top with aged white cheddar, panko, and more feta, back into the oven, and guys?
This is fucking good just, real fucking good
I thought I hated spaghetti squash but I just hate it when my sister cooks it cuz she cooks like the Dalish apparently, with just⌠no seasoning
Gonna bastardize many more recipes in future but this one is a winner once you beef it up a lil bit

Iâm cooking tarragon chicken right now and Iâve been meaning to share the recipe for ages so buckle up cause here it comes.
This is my friendâs family recipe (I think), and the first time I had it was when I was homeless and living in their spare room, and since then itâs become one of my top comfort foods - itâs great for winter but works in summer too, and depending on how many of you youâre cooking for can work for multiple dayâs food.
youâll need:
Skin on chicken thighs - I get them in packs of 7/8 and that will last my dad and I dinner for two nights, or dinner one night and next dayâs lunch.
Prefered cooking oil - I recommend olive, but whatever you usually use would probably work
125ml white wine - thatâs a 6th of a bottle for those of you who donât drink. This is going to be used to deglaze the pan - you could probably get away with making some quick chicken stock with stock cubes and using those, but I promise the wine makes it good. It doesnât need to be a great wine, but donât go with the cheapest bottle, either (if you donât drink, I recommend finding a friend/neighbour who does)
Juice of half a lemon
500g ripe cherry tomatoes
Fresh tarragon
salt and pepper - I personally like the chunky salt and freshly cracked black pepper, but anything will do in a pinch
Wild rice (or rice of your choice)
pak choy/carrots/green beens/whatever vegetables take your fancy
1. preheat oven to 190ÂşC/gas 5. Season the chicken with salt and pepper, heat the oil in a large frying pan or saute pan on a medium high heat and sear the chicken, turning the pieces several times until golden brown all over.
2. transfer the chicken, skin side up, into a casserole dish.
3. Deglaze the pan with the wine. That link there will teach you how to deglaze a pan - itâs super simple, and I promise it makes all the difference.
4. pour the liquid from the pan into the dish along with the chicken, add the lemon juice and a pinch of salt and pepper, then cover with foil and place in the oven for 30 minutes.
5. whilst itâs in the oven for the first time, prep any vegetables youâre serving with - I like to do grilled pak choy and buttered carrots, but itâs really up to you.
6. After 30 minutes remove from the oven and remove the foil - top tip, you can reuse that foil to line the tray you cook any vegetables on. Add the tomatoes, making sure not to cover the chicken - you want the oven to crisp it up a little - and replace in the oven without the foil for 25 minutes.
7. rinse the rice and cook (iâm not great at rice, so just cook it how you normally would)
8. cook the accompanying vegetables to your liking.
9. remove the casserole tray from the oven, add a couple of sprigs of tarragon and let rest for five minutes. Meanwhile rinse the rice again with boiling water.
10. Just before serving, add another handful of tarragon leaves to the dish.
11. Ta Da! you have a hearty meal! I recommend serving with.a spoonful or two of the liquid in the casserole dish - it moistens the rice and ties everything together.

What kind of food is your MC's favorite? Favorite dish? Can they make it themselves?
Hi there!
Sawyer is a relatively picky eater at least compared to Ethan. She has a couple favorite dishes that her mom made growing up like broccoli and sausage casserole, chicken crescent rolls, and funeral potatoes.
But her most favorite dish of all time is beef stroganoff. She loves it served over egg noodles or bowties. She literally could eat it every day of her life. She can make it herself, but only with the the help of a McCormick's spice packet. When Ethan learns this is her favorite, he decides to make it for her one night. From scratch. And it was amazing!
A close runner-up is homemade macaroni and cheese. In middle school she was bored one summer and broke out her mom's Betty Crocker recipe cards. She made it for the family and it became an instant family favorite. She's also made it for Ethan a couple times and he agrees.
And last but not least, she loves ground beef tacos. Just a corn tortilla, seasoned ground beef with cheese, tomatoes, green onions and some green taco sauce. Yum!
