Rip of the week: 04/11/2024
You Are Sus
Season 5 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips: Volume D
Ripped by Retro Gaming
youtube
Requested by Corb! (Request Form)
I've written a fair amount already on here about my somewhat...muted feelings, regarding Season 5 of the SiIvaGunner channel. It was, retrospectively, a sort of transitional year for the team, as they had to officially move past the King for Another Day Tournament after over two years of fixating on it, not to mention how large parts of the team had left during those years due to creative and personal differences. It's a net good in the end that the channel team wound up finally being free of the edgy assholes that had festered since the dark days of 2016, yet this transition left 2021 in particular feeling a bit...lost, in terms of long-term goals for the channel. We were, of course, still getting stellar rips as always; be it the remaining old guard showing tremendous growth with rips like Hopes and Divinity+, or fresh faces like R.L.99 from Through the F-F-Fire and the F-F-Flame and Memmy from Welcome to 2021! They finally invented summers that hurt motherfuckersđ only at sonicforcesâ.âcom making immediately memorable first impressions to help pave the way for the future of the channel...yet taken on the whole, it can be hard for me to remember just what Season 5 of SiIvaGunner in particular was aiming to prove.
As fate would have it, however, a set of huge events in the online world wound up happening in the lead-up to 2021, the very year of this initial uncertainty for the channel. The channel was no stranger to responding to ongoing online trends â Plains of Des-passing-to was far from the only upload of its ilk â yet the events in question had such a magnitude to them, to where it was as if SiIvaGunner's responses to them wound up inadvertedly defining the entire year's Season, in part defining the channel's whole legacy. The most obvious example is in the year's April Fools event; The Disappearance of Super Mario, rather than playing with the expectation and goals of the SiIvaGunner channel itself the way that ...of 2023 did with Season 7, was instead entirely built on an existing online joke that had been bubbling in the gaming community for the course of multiple months, one I covered pretty succinctly back on Your Best Nightmario and Mario Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Princess.
The second of these events would be the initial release of Friday Night Funkin' and the immediate surge of popularity it came with; doubtlessly, the SiIvaGunner team's choice to provide matching visuals for every rip of the game as shown on Satinpanties Symphony and Satin PantE's wound up giving the channel tons of attention from new fans, and over three years later it feels as if the culture of SiIvaGunner is inextricably linked with the youthful punk spirit still keeping FNF alive. Yet most momentous of all, above the aforementioned two events, there was a third that would end up festering into 2021 of SiIvaGunner, not through thematic coherence or through the die-hard passion of any one ripper in particular, but through sheer force of overexposure and comedic value; 2021 was, indeed, the rise and inescapable plateau of all forms of imposters, crewmates, tasks and sussy bakas; At last, it is time to talk about AMONG US, and time to talk about You Are Sus.
I've had the request for this rip in particular stuck in my head for months on end, awaiting a proper time to cover it; I've scraped the very surface of Among Us' presence on SiIvaGunner on here beforehand through Among Drip Drop Galaxy, and it's been looming over this blog since near its very beginning all the way back on Big Sus Chocobo. Yet to try and comprehend all that Among Us is feels nigh impossible: more than a video game, more than a phenomena, Among Us took the entire shitposting world by inexplicable storm and mutated like a virus into what feels like several hundred different memes over the course of mere months. It was rapidly growing in absurdity and layers of irony, much the same as SiIvaGunner memes like Grand Dad did like I wrote about on Waluigi Pinball (Beta Mix), yet now done on a wholly mainstream level; no matter who you were, if you were frequent on the internet you were only a few posts away from seeing the Among Us Drip memes, from knowing someone who had permanently added "sussy" to their lexicon, from seeing the vague silhouette of a crewmate wherever your eye would wander. Among Us shitposting was omnipresent, and the worst part was; It was, through some bizarre construction of the collective human consciousness, pretty much ALWAYS funny. The SiIvaGunner team witnessed this meteoric rise in an entire new genre of shitposting, and it was as if it gave the channel a newfound passion; as if to say, "no matter where our vessel heading, we're gonna make the best damned Among Us shitposts possible for as long as its afloat.".
And so, the rips came in; Expensive Dispenser's Among Fresh Drip, a mixture of these latter two phenomena released near the very start of Season 5, may perhaps be worthy of coverage on here in its own right for just how foundational it is to the Season 5 SiIvaGunner experience as a whole. But the rips riffing on the game only continued to grow in number, and as the meme itself grew it had yet more sources to pull from; like Bottom G of Lagplane fame, Among Us' greatest strength as a meme was just how damn versatile it was, as there were a seemingly neverending amount of audiovisual cues that would immediately let the viewer make the connection to Among Us and the growing insanity of its derivative content. Now, imagine taking a distillation of that insanity, and mixing it with what may be one of the SiIvaGunner team's most insane rippers; Retro Gaming. Featured on here previously through Logan Paul's Shop, the guy is a ripper whose output I have been SORELY underestimating, someone who â as made evident in the aforementioned rip â has a sort of unhinged knack for adding onto his rips through additional sources and jokes that only barely feel cohesive with what the original concept for the rip was, like teetering on the brink of madness. With these two combined, you end up with a whole bunch of Among Us rips; and, indeed, with You Are Sus in particular.
It's remarkable to me that You Are Smart now has two clear all-time amazing rips under its belt for me with both You Are Sus and Season 7's You Are Book Smart, but it goes to show just how much inherent comedic value the song has. The off-kilter feel of Katamari Damacy as a whole, distilled into a weird beat, melody and voice samples, make it the perfect canvas for true lunacy to breed; and with You Are Sus, practically every part of the Among Us shitposting homunculus is leveraged to make something truly unbelievable. It's far from the only Among Us YTPMV on SiIvaGunner â I mentioned Big Sus Chocobo before â and yet it feels perhaps like the most cohesive rip of the game you could possibly make. All the hits are here; Arcade Craniacs-posting, Stop Posting About Among Us, Among Us In Real Life, A M O G U S, all woven together in such a chaotic, unpredictable way, like a barrage of Among Us noise more than aiming to be organic parts of the original You Are Smart. Yet they're paired with additions that ARE almost seamlessly integrated with You Are Smart, changing the titular chant into "You Are Sus", Among Us sound effects being added to the original song's beat to give it just that slight sussy texturing, even giving it a sort of "beat drop" around 0:40.
Retro Gaming doesn't get sidetracked off the original joke here the way you could argue (despite being to its benefit) Logan Paul's Shop did; EVERY joke present here, every layer of madness added is all to further You Are Sus's agenda. The usage of Arcade Craniacs clips in particular is immensely inspired; the channel was one of many content farms on YouTube that found increasingly absurd ways to play off of the Among Us branding to boost their own popularity, and through voice clips relating to said efforts are intersperced throughout You Are Sus, it all comes full circle at the two minute mark. "It literally says 'You Are Sus'", a clip rings out, thereby connecting the echoing edit of the You Are Smart voice heard throughout the rip to the title and concept of the rip as a whole, a madhouse of every possible angle of the word "sus" played all at once.
I can express as many gripes with the overall direction of SiIvaGunner's 5th Season as I wish, but none of that will take away from the sheer talent and quality found within its rips; and a rip like You Are Sus excels in ways only a Season 5 SiIvaGunner rip could. Channelling the peak of Among Us shitposting insanity through the veins of one of the SiIvaGunner team's most cracked-out rippers, executed with the detail and finesse on a level to where the Stop Posting About Among Us-guy's ramble is synced to the beat of the song used... it was bound to become an all-time fantastic rip, is what I'm saying. It was as if the loose direction the channel took during 2021 in particular gave the team free reign, a freedom to adapt all that the internet was yelling over throughout the year with a degree of effort it would otherwise direct to the channel's own internal ecosystem. If that effort was what gave us rips like You Are Sus, then I'm perfectly content in calling Season 5 of SiIvaGunner a truly successful experiment.

I have exciting news for you Loud Crowd, and Sonic fans.
Soon this summer, I'm going to get a Lori Loud lithograph to be signed by Catherine Taber at Retro Expo in Fort Worth, TX (Dallas-Fort Worth area, I have Filipino-American relatives living there), meeting Grey DeLisle and Roger Craig Smith in person at Fan Expo Chicago next month. I'm also as well going to greet Grey her early birthday there, as her birthday is 7 days after my visit there maybe this Saturday.
Catherine Taber joins in my Loud sisters autograph collection after I got ones from Cristina Pucelli (Luan Loud), Grey DeLisle (Lana, Lola, and Lily Loud) in 2019, even her son, Tex Hammond (Lincoln Loud in seasons 3-4) in 2020, Lara Jill Miller (Lisa Loud) in 2021, Jessica DiCicco (Lynn and Lucy Loud) in 2023, and Nika Futterman (Luna Loud) earlier this year in 2024. Liliana Mumy (Leni Loud) is the only Loud sister voice actress, I have yet to get an autograph from as I'm currently actively planning to send a fan mail to her, and send back the my fanmade Leni Loud lithograph signed autograph back to me. I only have a Cameo video from Liliana Mumy, I have both from Grey DeLisle, Jessica DiCicco, and Nika Futterman. I'll be one of the only Loud Crowd, that will have all digital and physical pieces of media from the voice actresses of the Loud sisters. Over nearly a decade since 2016, my arts and entertainment brand has been recognized by the Los Angeles-based union (SAG-AFTRA) voice actresses of the Loud House and animation, notably with my voice acting idols, Grey DeLisle and Jessica DiCicco.

Childish Gambino - Atavista
Iâve made it no secret that I love Donald Glover, but ever since I saw Glover as Troy Barnes on Community in 2009, I knew that he was destined for greatness. Around the same time, Glover was doing a few other things: he was working on a sketch comedy YouTube channel, writing for 30 Rock, and most importantly, working on a burgeoning music career with the name Childish Gambino. With a name he supposedly got through a Wu-Tang name generator, I didnât hear anything he put out until 2011 with his debut studio album Camp. I remember being 17 and hearing âBonfireâ for the first time, and my mind was blown from how catchy and clever his music was, especially for someone that hadnât listened to rap music yet.
My enthusiasm did not share that of a lot of others, because Camp was not a well-received album. Itâs gotten a cult following over the last handful of years, but itâs taken people the last decade to really get on board with Donald Glover as a rapper. 2016âs Awaken, My Love was the first time people collectively took his music seriously, but it was too long overdue. Since then, Glover released another mixtape and EP, along with the huge single âThis Is America,â but he did quietly release an unfinished and unmastered project called 3.15.20 that a lot of people either didnât know existed or forgot about completely.
I include myself in that, because I never really listened to it, unfortunately. The album didnât have any song titles, only time stamps, and because the album wasnât finished at all, I didnât listen to it at all. Glover has said that he only released the album because he thought everyone was going to die, and understandably so. Recently he randomly announced that he was releasing a finished version of the album, only to surprisingly drop it on Sunday, May 13th. I was absolutely thrilled, because Iâve been wanting to hear a finished version of this album for years, now entitled Atavista.
Adding the title track and another ânewâ song, the fan favorite âHuman Sacrificeâ from 2018/2019, and removing a couple of songs (as well as adding some new guest features on the preexisting songs), the new album is here, so how is it? As I said, I never got into the original version, but if youâre discovering this for the first time, like a lot of people are, this is almost a transcendental experience. Atavista is one of the best albums of the year, if not one of the best of the 2020s so far. Hearing the finished version of this record has been an absolute treat, because itâs one of my favorite Childish Gambino records, and it may be one of his best.
This record both invokes some new ideas for Glover and a lot of subtle callbacks to his work throughout the last 15 years. It mainly has a funk, soul, and R&B sound akin to his last couple of projects, but there are moments where Glover raps and moves into some psychedelic and experimental stuff from Because The Internet. This album reminds me a lot of a mix between Prince, Michael Jackson, and an unfortunate reference, Kanye West. Make no mistake, Iâm talking about Kanye circa 2004, not currently Kanye, but itâs also more so in his use of retro-leaning soul, funk, and R&B with modern textures.
Atavista has the interesting quality of where every song sounds pretty similar, but theyâve also got their own identities at the same time. The hooks on this record are quite nice, and Glover is the best vocally heâs ever sounded. This record is wonderful, and easily worth hearing if youâre a fan, or you want a catchy R&B / hip-hop record. I can see myself playing this a ton during the summer, because this is some perfect summer music. Itâs also just one of my favorite albums of the year so far, and I can see it being awfully high on the list come December.

"SHE CAN CREATE INTRICATE HOLOGRAPHIC ILLUSIONS, PROJECT POWERFUL LASER BEAMS OR "DAZZLE" HER OPPONENTS..."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on pin-up art of Alison Blaire, a.k.a., "Dazzler," in full battle mode against the forces of Mojo in the Mojoverse, from "The Marvel X-Men Collection" Vol. 1 #1 (of 3 issues). January, 1993. Marvel Comics. Artwork by Jim Lee.
BONUS PICS: Front and back of trading card #85, Dazzler, from "X-Men" Trading Card Series 1 by Impel/Marvel, c. 1992. Artwork by Jim Lee.
Resolution from largest to smallest: 1489x2048 (2x) 1044x1600, & 1139x764.
DAZZLER OVERVIEW: "When you think of Dazzler, odds are you think of disco and rollerskates. If you're a fan of the the classic X-Men arcade game or animated "Pryde of the X-Men" pilot, then your definitive Dazzler might rock a blue bodysuit, headband and bomber jacket. Well, there's another Dazzler: Freedom Fighter Dazzler! Jim Lee's Dazzler redesign could have taken the mutant musician totally grunge, but instead she went full "Universal Soldier."
Dazzler's one of a few "Ex-X-Men" included in the set, a group devoted to characters -- like Magik and Sunspot -- who had recently left their X-teams. This card actually coincided with the debut of this rough-and-ready version of Dazzler. As her bio states, Dazzler's whereabouts were unknown prior to her return in summer 1992's "X-Men" #10. This is the version of Dazzler -- a freedom fighter commanding troops alongside Longshot in the Mojoverse -- that debuted in that story-arc. Fans wouldn't get all that much of Dazzler in the '90s, though, and once she returned in the '00s, this period of her history was mostly forgotten."

names and thoughts below cut
407/ VA - Mirror Image: A Link to the Past ReMixed (2017) the !!!s: "Once Upon an Adventure" stuck with me most i think. the sound design!! "Excuse Me, Princess" fun take on an underrated theme "Dungeon Shuffle" peak blind banger "The Darkest World" rly cool arrangement here
---
408/ Kliptown - Kliptown I (2023) short but sweet little romp. futuregaragey? beats. "Stay" does a silly vocal thing that i kind of love "Sunday Groove" second fav
---
409/ Rabit - Les Fleurs Du Mal (2017) abstract. feels like a story. doesn't mesh with me particularly well⌠:\
---
410/ Emptyset - Skin (2017) maximum pedal tone!!! this slaps actually. all 4 tracks lol
---
411/ VA - All Nighter Vol. 8 (2023) various! so: "chucho" feels good banger :) feels like a modern take on what joesph nothing was doing 20 years ago. love the cuteness within "TELEWORK". "Hueshift." slappy. "CLEAN JOBS" god damn. dirty and clean at the same time! massiv.
---
412/ Ghetto Lee Lewis - Heretic Sinphony (2017) imo this is one damn good track with several bonus tracks attached. "Embrace the Darkness" hell yeah im embracing it
---
413/ YoshiBlade - Candy Corn II: The Sequeling (2017) back to bang backers. i am not much a fan of the narration, even though it's not bad. however: Cave Mushrooms!!! "Be Kind, Rewind" is a good take on a classic too
---
414/ VA - SOUND WAVES: A Tribute to Ecco the Dolphin (2016) mixed bag. way more guitar than i was anticipating, which isnt rly my thing. tho the postrock chill-ish stuff is good ("Scrolling Madness" f.ex) the live(?) jams are more my pace, ie "Aquamarine Bagel". & the lush stuff!
---
415/ Abdicant - Nothing we do will persist (2023) smtimes skeptical of "ambient" music as it can either be boring or soul-enveloping. luckily this has some bangers: "Premonition" hits right "The final self portrait" dark cold night.<3 "Proton Decay" beautiful use of pulse waves!
---
416/ VA - Detroit XI (2017) mixed bag etc! "Motor City Motorcade" unlocked some strange nostalgic feeling in me. "Aeroplanefunk" is my overall fav i think. surprised how low this ranked compared to some other personal hilights on my list!
---
417/ Anonymous Various Artists - Covert 4 (2023) very mixed bag, but from a damn good collective. two specifics: "Ronck67" has this sleazy soundscape draped over the outline of hip hop. delicious. "Damaged Cells" has such a specific timbre that i dig. simple maybe, but precise.
---
418/ VA - Summer Chip VII (2017) mixed bag etc etc I'd like to first highlight "sleep paralysis" for being insanely cool. i love love that hazy composition! after that: "movement phase" holy shit "Coda-Cola Zone" holy shitttttttttt (bangerest!)
---
419/ Mia Koden - Decode (2023) dusty old nighttime musics. weirdly nostalgic??? i hate to say retro toonami butâŚ. retro toonami. vibes. "10easy" especially
---
420/ VA - Secret of Mana: Resonance of the Pure Land (2017) mixed bag etc etc there's a good variety in here tbh however, i must say: "Kaleidoscope"? microtones in my ocrs? this rules. other hilits are "No Cab, Fan Pride: Boku No Infinite Thotty Gaiden" (fun!!!) and "Steel and Wubz" (fub woby!!) last album of the year! onward to the next <3

i have some gender ideas :D
- a gender themed around valentines day and the lolita/coquette aesthetic together, like a retro 1950s aesthetic
- a gender themed around the band called millionaires (aka the ones who wrote âtake your shirt offâ and tons of iconic songs) and their assthetic: partying, drinking, money, drugs, and most of all not giving a fuck.
- a gender themed around summer 2016-2017 vibes (ie. 2016-2017 nostalgia, musical.ly, beach waves (both hair and at the actual beach), warm sand, refreshing smoothies, leather gladiator sandals, white french tips, etc.)
- a gender themed around the y2k baddie/barbie aesthetic, kind of like those roblox barbies/ayesha fans or the barbs from 2020 :))
hello anon ! ! and oh my god . . . /POS ! ! so many genders ! ! She who inhabits the Metaverse will try to get them done as soon as possible ! ! Cy also saw Your other ask , and she's sure it'll take her some time to complete all of those reqs , so pls be patient ! The Coded One will reply to your 2nd ask as she gets all of them done ~

Harry Styles is the Most Wonderfully Dressed Singer in the Universe
Most singers have notable fashion adventures, but Harry Styles? In the midst of a fashion revolution. From One Direction's infancy in 2011 to today, the pop star has blessed us with so many great looks. What started with wavy hair and tight jeans quickly evolved into hand-knitted cardigans and hand-knitted sweaters within a decade.
If you want to get into the timeline of Harry's most influential ensembles, please let me break them down into some periods. The earliest notable is the period of the singer's colorful cardigans and knitted vests. From there he moved on to the era of long hair, then to the age of the playful crochet cardigan and sweater vest.Right now, Harry is in his ambitious age wearing sequins and sparkles as if it were his own business. No matter which ~Harry era~ you prefer, you're sure to enjoy all of the best Harry Styles outfits put together below.
1) Hand Knit Cardigan, Crochet Cardigan, Colorful Cardigan, Oversized Cardigan, Sweater Cardigan Women, Women's Sweater, Oversized Patchwork;
2) Harry Styles Sweater, Hand Knit Sweater, Blue Sweater, Crochet Sweater, Women's Sweater, Handmade Sweater, Sweater Men, Embroidered Sweater;
3) Harry Styles Vest, Floral Vest, Sleeveless Vest, Black Vest, Hand Knit Vest, Womens Vest, Boho Vest, Crochet Vest, Knit Sweater Vest
4) Harry Styles Sweater, Hand Knit Sweater, Black Sweater, Crochet Sweater, Women's Sweater, Handmade Sweater, Sweater for Men, Boho Sweater
Harry Styles knows how to carry clothes. Styles lived up to his last name in earnest for years. This is because he knows the definition of style: to fit his wardrobe into a series of basic elements and then have some fun with his finishing touches. From chunky cardigans to embroidered sweaters and floral patterned vests, her outfits never stop inspiring.
Harry's House is now out with his new album, we expect bigger harmony...
Each show on Harry Styles' Love On Tour offered more than just tremendous music. The performances doubled as a fashion show featuring Styles' custom-designed unisex cardigans and fans dressed in equally theatrical fits. In some cases, he even encouraged a certain dress code for his fans to follow, such as Styles' Harryween shows. The tour was the perfect combination of music, fashion and entertainment, but Styles also kills fashion play off stage.
While Styles has always been fond of fashion, this year has seen the singer really master and develop her performance style. He appeared on stage with boho cardigan, cardigan sweater and oversized cardigans. She wore summer cardigan for Halloween shows and dressed like a seriously stylish ghost in a white, frilly dress.
Styles hasn't made many red carpets this year, but in the situations he has, Styles has been a memorable fit. At this year's Grammys, he set fandom on fire when he wore a long cardigan and lavender-colored boa. She wore a sweater with a blue chick pattern; Both looks have become popular this year. At the Brit Awards, Styles channeled the 1970s with patchwork cardigans and summer cardigans. The singer's style seems to be making itself better every year, so let's prepare ourselves for what 2022 will hold. At just 28 years old, Harry Styles has established himself as one of the most talented multi-hyphens in the game.
With "Watermelon Candy", which topped the charts in 2019, she has already proven her success in singing and plunged into the world of acting. But what we're really obsessed with is Harry leading the fashion. He's come a long way since wearing hoodies and baggy jeans. He fasts forward 12 years and Harry Styles is the guy all the designers want to put on a knitted cardigan.
But if we're talking about Harry's style shift, we definitely need to discuss the early years: 2014, 2015, 2016 where Harry's tailoring rules book consists of knit cardiga, men's cardigans, wool cardigans, patterned vests, chunky sweaters and retro sweaters.
Then, around the time he was cut for a role in the 2017 Dunkirk film â he witnessed Harry's typical boy band aesthetic shift to a much more adventurous approach to fashion; Since then, she has been praised for challenging gender norms and blurring them through style.
She became the face of designers who made custom-designed cardigans, sweaters and vests, then wore a transparent, lacy blouse with a single pearl earring at the 2019 Met Gala. In December 2020, Harry appeared on the cover of several magazines, wearing a streetwear sweater paired with an oversize sweater.
She told the magazine: "The clothes are there to have fun, try on and play... When you buy something like, 'There are clothes for men and there are clothes for women,' when you remove any barriers, obviously you open them. In the arena where you can play."
And this year was a time when Harry took to the stage in sparkling, animal sweaters and colorful cardigans that dazzled us.
Transforming from One Directioner to Hollywood, the leading man accomplished much in his way of pushing the boundaries of mainstream fashion by doing very little: 90's sweaters, handknit sweaters, crochet vests, black vests, and sleeveless vests earned him both friend and foe. While Styles isn't the first man to "gender-bend" tailoring standards, her pride in enjoying fashion may compound over her, despite social pressures to conform to toxic masculinity. Definitely successful.

Losing Your Cool
The bigger they are, the harder they fall. This is one of the greatest truths, especially in business. Being big is no guarantee of your continued success. If anything, it means you have a big X on your back, with willing upstart competitors as well as larger ones all trying to figure out what to do if you should blink.
And that is exactly what happened to Nike, the footwear and athleisure company that has completely lost its cool. For many years, they could do no wrong, inking deals with superstar athletes and watching customers line up to hand over their money every time they launched something new.
Itâs just that their now ex-CEO John Donahue made the company-crushing decision to produce retro Air Jordans, and completely miss a huge market trend. Trail running is big right now. Ask me. I know, and I see hordes of people enjoying it when I am plying the trails in Palo Duro Canyon. Air Jordans donât cut it.
That was precisely the opening that brands like Hoka and On needed. They are crushing it right now, dominating the $150-$160 price point. Other long-tail competitors are also cashing in, like Altra, Salomon, La Sportiva, and others that few have even heard of. Go to any running store or REI, and youâll see what I mean. You also wonât see Nike. They missed this train completely.
The old CEO is out, a failed and rare move by the company to hire an outsider for the role in 2020. In addition to missing a trend, he pulled back on the retail scene, focusing more on DTCâDirect To Consumerâefforts. The new CEOâinsider Elliott Hillâhas his hands full. Once a brand is tarnished, it is hard to regain the cool factor. Their stock price plummeted more than 20% one day this summer. Can anyone say âfell off a cliff?â
I know. Crocs came back, and is enjoying a second life right now. I canât explain that one. They are a casual wear shoe, though, not at all performance-oriented. I think I would much rather wear Dutch wooden shoes, but to each their own.
Somehow Nike navigated the choppy waters following the Colin Kaepernick controversy in 2016. The company stood by him, and in 2018 its stock price hit record levels. I suppose that controversy and missing trends are two very different things, though.
But how could a CEO and company be so blind and tone deaf as to miss what people were doing with their spare time? Never mind that the company is located in Oregon, in a part of the country where outdoor activities are a big part of the lifestyle.
While I am not privy to cost data, I suspect the margins on specialty footwear are huge. The overwhelming majority are manufactured in southeast Asia, with New Balance being the only brand I can think of that runs the other direction. In shoes that have at least 70% of the materials from the US, they proudly proclaim they are âMade in the USA.â My Hokas and Ons are both made in Vietnam.
Iâm not sure that matters to many people, though. I am looking for quality footwear, and it doesnât matter to me where it is manufactured. In this activity, what you have on your feet is the most important thing, and I know for a fact that price is being used as a proxy for quality in some regards. Running shorts and shirts are cheap by comparison.
The sales reps I speak to at REI all tell me the same thing: Hokas, Ons, and the like will last 300-500 miles. Generally speaking, I will run them a little longer. The tread wears down, and the sole breaks down. You can begin to feel when it is time. Iâm going to retire my second pair of Hokas at the end of this week with 600 miles on them.
Yet missing from this conversation is Nike, now the barefoot gorilla in the living room. How can a company lose its cool so fast? Can they do a 180 and come up with competitive trail runner shoes? Or have they simply given too much market space to Hoka, On, et al., to even have a chance in this sector?
Once again, the consumers have spoken, and someone wasnât listening. Thatâs not cool, and it is not a good look for Nike falling as hard as they have.
