I was wondering what bands you liked? And out of them, which one inspires you to write music the most?

This is such a cool question to be asked, thank you! These actually feel like two pretty separate questions to me. The first one is too jumbled to answer in a Tumblr post and I don't have brain right now, but I'll try?

My first real music love was Evanescence. I was obsessed. The sheer fucking primal emotion in their music combined with Lee's aesthetic & the cinematic feel of it all was catnippp to me. My second love was Coheed & Cambria (I was in a cover band in high school), for similar reasons + they were my first exposure to concept albums. Anyone who hasn't listened to their first 3 albums *needs* to. The Dear Hunter was also an early love of mine. Their frontman (and Tanner Merritt of O'Brother, look up their first Audiotree session and sink innnn) are my vocal inspirations. Shout-outs to Panic!'s first two albums, 2000s emo in general, and especially MCR (confirming here that Helena & Gerard is an MCR reference). I was also in a Mars Volta cover band in college, which was how I started getting any kind of decent at the instrument.

More recently (in addition to frequent visits to my old favorites) I have been loving PUP, The Hotelier, Sarah & the Safeword (you all would *love* them), The Oh Hellos, Freelance Whales first album, Hozier (oh god Hozier), Typhoon, Jank (first album) O'Brother (first two albums), San Fermin, The Suitcase Junket, Devil & the Deep Blue Sea, Raccoon Tour, As Tall as Lions, Island of Misfit Toys, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Foxing, and Foxy Shazam (put on their self titled album for a fuckin' excellent time). The original Hadestown album also had a huge impact on me.

Who inspires me to write is a different question, because actually most of the songs I've written for Forgetmenauts all have specific feels of different artists that I intentionally wanted to incorporate. Imma go through the discography in order and see if I can pinpoint an inspiration for all the songs. Some are *really* specific, others just have a general feel.

Cottonwood- This one I really felt like I was drawing on the style that I've been cultivating over the course of this FMNs project.

Rusalka- I was trying to write a Typhoon song. Their album White Lighter is one of the few *perfect* works of art that I know of.

Persephone: I wrote this one back in college, actually, for a concept album I was working on at the time that never got finished. Some Hadestown in it, for sure, otherwise I couldn't tell ya.

This is the sort of question I always fantasized about getting asked back when I was first starting to write music in high school, it's really cool to have someone who only knows me from my work honestly interested in it. Hello, everyone! It's been a good bit, hasn't it... indeed, university stuff can do that.

That being said, I also want to provide a heads-up that things will be looking busy for this coming week. I have a midterm, a quiz, and an information session on a Master's program I'll probably take in the future, all set in the first half of the week.

With all of that happening, alongside some further homework and light group-project stuff to have at, I think any forthcoming replies will have to wait for a little while longer. Apologies, and do excuse the wait. I'm nonetheless sure that things will get much less strenuous once this week is over...!

SUMMER BREAK. I need that sweet, sweet free time to fix my gottdang phone. *currently battling against the terrible screen and CPU of the $79 woolworths phone as we speak* (how this thing is worse than a phone from 2015 AND less responsive than my other phone from 2009 is a complete and utter mystery)

7. Thing you’re working on right now:

HOKAY SO. my mechatronics class has a free form practical where you get to make whatever you want right? So when my phone broke the first time (battery became a spicy pillow) I got REALLY fed up with how nothing is user serviceable anymore (my phone isn't that bad but the fact that I had to order speciality parts for it sucked) so I took it upon myself to fix it one project at a time

So I started small, (might try and tackle serviceable phone for my thesis, phones are INCREDIBLY complex) and made the Comically Large Arduino Watch. It tells the date! It tells the time! It has backlight control! It has a battery that lasts ONE (1) full day of constant operation! (Full list of features)

This is an older photo of it, I've replaced the Arduino Uno with an Arduino Nano (to get more space in there, despite its size there is NOT a lot of room) and am currently adding automatic backlight control, some blinkenlights, and am fixing the whole battery situation (this required a COMPLETE code overhaul btw) tempted to add a dancing amogus in the 1 free character block I have left on the display too depending on how much I get done before it has to get marked

I can cook, unfortunately I have disease where whenever I look in the pantry all I see is condiments. Plus I hate cooking meat because I'm afraid I'll give myself food poisoning :( (not to mention the accursed Oils™ , I DON'T LIKE TOUCHING THEM)

Tron legacy. It's got old computers! It's got highly experimental lasers! It's got practical effects! It's got Daft Punk! It's got genders! It's got ethical dilemmas! It's got cool cyber jets! Just everything I love it so much (I am so normal about this movie *has a Tron blog they've been running since 2016*) watch Tron (1982) first though you need the context (I ALSO LOVE THIS ONE TOO. Go look up how it was made its insane. Tldr: computer animation did not exist, but single frame rendering did. SO THEY HAD TO CALCULATE THE POSITION OF EVERYTHING WITH MATH BY HAND. And that's just the surface of the iceberg baybee!!!)

there i was in my bedroom in the summer of 1998 when a friend of mine says, “play this CD. i just bought it but i haven’t listened it to yet.” it was the “touch it” single. admittedly, i did not want to play it. i had associated monifah with mid-tempo songs, and i didn’t want to bring the tempo down, but i relented. BAYBEE! we were just 8 bars into the song when we looked at each other with eyes wide open ����. we could not believe what we were hearing! miss monifah had gifted the gurls a track that was beyond fire!

“touch it,” which brilliantly samples laid back’s 1983 hit “white horse,” is a track that blends dance, pop, funk, and soul. chyle, as soon as you hear “jack knight and dakoda house, all we wanna do is make you bounce,” you are running to the dance floor. asthma where!? monifah’s seductive vocal, which recalls vanity 6’s 1982 classic “nasty girl,” had the power to make everyone a seductress on the dance floor. trust me, this is all true.

monifah emerged in 1996 and quickly established herself as a voice of both power and subtlety with gold-certified her debut album “mood… moments.” the album included the two heavy d. co-produced gold-selling singles, “i miss you (come back home),” and the moody pop top 40 hit “you.”

reading mawrth valliis, by EPHK. the schtick is “presented in the original martian” which i think could have been a stronger creative choice if there was less dialogue? the lettering is very pretty, but it’s sort of a frustrating read. i fucking hate the character design and the twist, but the art is lovely in a very textural way, and i’m a sucker for pages like this. 126 p is not a lot of my time wasted

watching the anime otherside picnic is based off the light novel (and manga adaptation) of otherside picnic by iori miyazawa, itself based off the novel roadside picnic by the strugatsky brothers. in short, otherside picnic is a gay genderbent college AU isekai that manages to capture some of the psychological horror and financial desperation of the original. still with me? available free here (legally, even! you’re welcome).

i care about these girls in a way i don’t usually with anime. part of this is bc this anime does tick all my boxes- young lesbians figuring themselves out, who grow into a well-oiled pair that also goofs around on their off time, a perpetually exasperated handler/patron, The City Is Alive And Will Get You, it’s an adaptation of one of my favorite things, jokes about the availability and type of guns in open-world RPGs that made me laugh like a hyena. there’s a bit about someone growing their hair out that genuinely gutted me. i am probably going to buy physical copies of these light novels bc apparently the POV voice is Quite Something and they’re more explicitly gay.

the animation is Fine, the sound mixing is quite good imo, the emotional arcs were satisfying, i really love halfhour shows bc it’s so easy to watch a whole season in like three days if you’re not careful. hour-long shows are Appointment Television. that’s a Time Investment i simply do not always have

this show (unfortunately) features the US military stationed at okinawa (the marines ARE the ones most likely to get themselves into this sort of situation tbh) and therefore cannot let anything really bad happen to them although i really do think they should just be left to tear each other apart in the Zone/otherside

playing still having a Time with meshes not meshing in sable (also a piece of graffiti i needed to follow to start a quest simply...wasn’t there?) but it’s very forgivable, imo. i am willing to put up with a lot for a pretty game with mysterious solar-system spanning mysteries and wrecked ships to climb around. 4/6 of the way done with the ship AI quest and i am extremely excited and also pre-grieving what i think happened

they lived at the top of a hill in a trailer in a trailer park neighbourhood in laramie, wyoming so to say the least that fucking sucked for everyone involved

the trailer was so small that all 3 boys ended up sharing a room, gunner and wyatt sharing a bunk bed bc they cldnt fit 3 beds into one room it really was every childs nightmare bt they quickly grew used to it tbh

gunner was always more of an artsy child than invested in sports - though he does enjoy baseball and continued even to this day after their dad made him join SOMETHING in middle school - so he never rly earned their father’s respect, but he was always close with his mom since they had the same calm temperament

(depression/anxiety tw) he also gained a list of mental health issues that their mom had as well, including social anxiety and major depressive disorder

(violence/abuse tw) their father always encouraged pretty volatile behaviour and it caused a lot of physical fights and arguments between the brothers when their dad told them the best way to get over it was to start hurting until someone tapped out, it was just a chaotic and pretty abusive household but no one knew and their mom definitely wasn’t going to say anything about it to their dad

(missing child/kidnapping/anxiety/depression tw)  wyatt went missing on a weekend that their parents were gone because of a trip they won, and things just got worse from there, high school was really rough for gunner, his anxiety grew worse as time went on that no one found wyatt, their dad grew more hostile towards them, cliff left home in the middle of the night never to be seen again (merely leaving a note so that the family didn’t think they had a case of two kidnapped children), and their mom just grew sicker, it was rare that she would ever leave her room and if she did it was in fits of random energy where she would do something spontaneous and completely unnecessary to their house as a way of coping

the two years that gunner was at home after cliff left were pretty brutal and as soon as he could, he was fleeing wyoming and going to school in irving

(internalized homophobia tw)  things are far better now that he’s out of his home situation, but ofc he still has a few personal things he’s working thru; the paxton’s were raised in an incredibly religious household, and he’s got some classic Catholic Guilt going on upon realizing that he’s not jst attracted to women n he avoided talking abt it forever/stayed in the closet fr far too long bt he’s sort of come out now in his own way even tho he does still get a bit nervous talking abt it rly

he’s also ‘dealing’ rn (just pharmaceuticals) which is frankly funny to think abt bc this man is abt as threatening as a care bear bt money is tight all things considering and a librarian job doesn’t rly cover it, and with the amount of meds he’s on, plus incredibly frequent doctor’s visits, needing to pay for extra epi-pens, inhalers, etcs. bills add up so he’s cutting back his meds n selling wht he can spare which is . so unhealthy bt thts life in corporate america baybee!

who or what caught my attention i initially heard “wannabe” in a mashup actually!!! (i unironically LOVE kpop mashups lmao) so i went to check it out and i REALLY liked it! the instrumental immediately hooked me. the synths were sooo lush. oh man and then after the intro, the instrumental goes really sparse and then keeps BUILDING, it makes the chorus (WHICH HAS BRASS.. HEWWO... love brass in pop songs) feel really satisfying. the melody is also just sooo good and SOOO catchy without feeling overly repetitive. the one with the pink hair has a lovely vocal color! i also listened to “one (lucid dream)” when it came up on the k-pop daebak spotify playlist. i was totally digging the driving, funky bass guitar and the really lush synths. i went to rewatch the mv just now, and i just realized they’re woollim kids!!!! i used to be a huge inspirit back in the day so that was a lil bit of a pleasant surprise haha. i also LOVE “without you”

why i want to stan i am simply Too Old to be stanning new groups, but i definitely will try to keep up with their title tracks because they’ve got a solid discography going. i also really enjoy the group’s vocal color because of how well they complement each other.

DEPRESSION/ANXIETY TW - he also gained a list of mental health issues that their mom had as well, including social anxiety and major depressive disorder - DEPRESSION/ANXIETY TW END

VIOLENCE/ABUSE TW - their father always encouraged pretty volatile behaviour and it caused a lot of physical fights and arguments between the brothers when their dad told them the best way to get over it was to start hurting until someone tapped out, it was just a chaotic and pretty abusive household but no one knew and their mom definitely wasn’t going to say anything about it to their dad - VIOLENCE/ABUSE TW END

MISSING CHILD/KIDNAPPING TW - wyatt went missing on a weekend that their parents were gone because of a trip they won, and things just got worse from there

ANXIETY/DEPRESSION TW - high school was really rough for gunner, his anxiety grew worse as time went on that no one found wyatt, their dad grew more hostile towards them, and their mom just grew sicker, it was rare that she would ever leave her room and if she did it was in fits of random energy where she would do something spontaneous and completely unnecessary to their house as a way of coping - MISSING CHILD/KIDNAPPING/ANXIETY/DEPRESSION TW END

the two years that gunner was at home after elias finally left for school were basically torture and as soon as he could, he was falling his brother’s footsteps in getting out of wyoming to go to school at radcliffe

You May or May not know this, but the month of May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month! I’d like to take the opportunity to highlight some awesome bands in the music scene that feature Asian members. Growing up as an Asian American, I wasn’t really introduced to anything music related (other than the local radio’s Classical station) until high school. And it was incredibly discouraging to discover the lack of Asian presence in that side of the entertainment industry as well. Often stereotyped as the “quiet race,” the Asian artists and bands listed below are anything but, and definitely deserve to be heard.

Japanese Breakfast (a.k.a Michelle Zauner) 

Japanese Breakfast, the solo project of Little Big League’s Michelle Zauner, really embodies lo-fi indie pop, creating light, colorful melodies layered with dreamy vocals and emotive lyrics. A current favorite song of mine is “Everybody Wants to Love You,” which is a definite bright, catchy summer jam. Zauner, who is actually Korean despite the name of her project, also showcases her songwriting expertise in her other band Little Big League, which has a clunkier, emo sound, but is also worth listening to. Japanese Breakfast will release a new album titled Soft Sounds From Another Planet on July 14th.

Jay Som

If you heard of Japanese Breakfast, you probably already know about Jay Som, a Filipina American dream pop artist. As demonstrated through her recent album, Everybody Works, her sound features a range of genres, rotating between prominent R&B bass lines, shoegaze-tinged vocals, and sweet, pop-influenced keyboard or synth. Som’s lyrics are often intimate and familiar, which is shown through, “Baybee,” a funky, warm tune that I’d highly recommend listening to.

Mitski

Mitski is a Japanese American indie rock artist, who often explores the turmoil of being Asian American and reconciling with each identity, as she reflects on her most recent album, Puberty 2, “[Being] half Japanese, half American but not fully either.” Her raw, melancholic lyrics really hit home, and are reinforced either by distorted guitar playing or swelling vocals. Mitski’s sound dips between punk and dreamier, ghostly sounding tracks, but her sincere, introspective lyrics stay true throughout. I’d recommend listening to her punk rock hit, “Your Best American Girl,” which most explicitly displays her angst with heartache and being Asian American, and how the latter caused the first.

Yuck

Hailing from London, England, Yuck is everything ’90s rock. Whether their sound includes urgent, fuzzy guitar playing or smoother, stripped melodies, they maintain a refreshing, youthful rebellious energy. Yuck also features bassist Mariko Doi, who immigrated from Hiroshima, Japan. I recommend listening to “Cannonball” off of their most recent album, Stranger Things. Or have a listen to their Southern Skies EP, which deviants from their usual high energy songs, but still offers a chill, shoegaze vibe.

Dum Dum Girls

Dum Dum Girls are a rock band whose sound is comprised of crooning vocals, heavy reverb, and traditional rock guitar rhythms. In terms of Asian representation, the band includes a Vietnamese American bassist, Sandy Vu. Their track “Coming Down”, which is a love song that has grounding, head-bobbing drum beats, is absolutely worth listening to.

Tangerine

Tangerine sites their influences as “The Clash, Sky Ferreira, Mazzy Star, Charli XCX, the Pixies, and more.” This ’80s sound is the most apparent in their recent EP, Sugar Teeth, which contains a strong, rocking guitar presence and matching, drifting vocals. The band features two Korean American sisters: lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Marika Justad, as well as Miro Justad, who sings backing vocals and plays drums. Regarding her ethnicity, Miro said in an interview with Korean Indie, “Being multi-racial, female musicians means that [my sister and I are] pushing into territory that’s not commonly occupied by people who look the way we do, and I’m always aware of that. How can you not be?”

No Vacation

This five-piece band features three Asian Americans, including frontwoman Sabrina Mai, synth player Nat Lee, and drummer James Shi. Their sound is described as a combination of “college nostalgia and surf-tinged bedroom pop.” I’d give their song “Lovefool” a listen; its sunny vibes will make you feel like you’re having a lazy day in a summer afternoon. No Vacation is set to release a new album in June, so be on the lookout!

SALES

Since summer is practically here, nothing feels more appropriate than binge-listening to SALES. The indie pop band creates simple songs, accompanied by easy rhythms and breezy vocals. SALES is comprised of two members, vocalist Lauren Morgan and Jordan Shih, a Chinese American guitarist and sample programmer. My favorite song of theirs is “Chinese New Year”, which showcases light, upbeat bass and guitar riffs.

Yuna

If you like Glass Animals or Sylvan Esso, be sure to check out Yuna. Yuna is a Muslim, Malaysian indie pop artist, whose music is a fusion of smooth vocals, honest lyrics, and a multitude of genres. While her earlier work can be described more as folk-pop, her most recent album, Chapters, has more of a smooth, R&B sound. Definitely have a listen to “Crush”, and the entirety of Chapters while you’re at it!

Cathedrals 

Laced with cheerful synth and powerful vocals, Cathedrals is an electro-dream pop duo composed of vocalist Brodie Jenkins and Johnny Hwin, a Vietnamese American multi-instrumentalist. Their sound inspires movement and energy; you can’t help but dance along to their songs! You can check out their most recent piece, “Try to Fight.”

The Naked and Famous

You’re probably already familiar with the bright, synth-infused hit “Young Blood,” by The Naked and Famous, but you may not know that the lead singer, Alisa Xayalith, is Laotian. If you like “Young Blood,” you’ll like the band’s most recent record, Simple Forms, which maintains their youthful, upbeat vibe.

Conan Gray

Known as a vlogger on Youtube, Conan Gray is gay, half-Japanese and posts covers as well as original songs on his channel. He recently released his single “Idle Town” on music sharing platforms, and he announced an EP is in the works. From the simple lyrics to the full, slow melody, “Idle Town” perfectly captures the feeling of nostalgia. Gray’s vocals remind me of Florence and the Machine or Seafret, drawing upon comforting, indie rock vibes in his music.

Run River North

Run River North is an all-Korean American indie folk-rock band that formed as a way to provide “conversation for immigrant family kids to talk about, or just to have some kind of space to share their family histories,” according to lead singer Alex Hwang. They are active advocates of Asian representation in the scene, and their lyrics reflect that. Accompanied by sweet, violin harmonies and warm vocals, I recommend listening to their song “Monsters Calling Home.”

Young Rising Sons

Young Rising Sons’ sound includes fun, folk-rock melodies and relatable, comforting lyrics that can be belted down the freeway. This pop rock band also features Julian Dimagiba, a Filipino American bassist. I recommend listening to their catchy, hit song, “High”, but also be sure to check out their recent single “Carry On.”

Hunter Hunted

Similar sounding to Young Rising Sons, Hunter Hunted is an indie pop band that has an uplifting sound, incorporating driving guitar rhythms and sometimes ukulele or lively synth. Their music really has that classic summer, pop rock sound, and is paired with simple, pleasant lyrics. This band duo includes vocalist and keyboardist Michael Garner, as well as Dan Chang, who is a Taiwanese American bassist and vocalist. Have a listen to “Lucky Day,” to immediately put yourself in a good mood!

Music Review: Jay Som - Everybody Works

Jay Som Everybody Works [Polyvinyl; 2017] Rating: 3.5/5 Crystal ball emoji, trumpet emoji, the emoji heart with the vibes radiating from its top. Insight, play, and vulnerability make up the communication style of Jay Som, the project of Bay Area-based multi-instrumentalist Melina Duterte. Seeing Duterte live last summer made me want to get out my guitar and text myself with it, drafting a love letter with just a few spare chords. The direct, emotive appeal of her live shows (and of last year’s Turn Into) is built out into full-band arrangements on her latest full-length, Everybody Works. The album is, in her own words, about “finding some peace within yourself” as an adult. “Last time I was angry at the world,” she said of her earlier work. “This is a note to myself: everybody’s trying their best on their own set of problems and goals. We’re all working for something.” Safe in a sexy way, Everybody Works is about pleasure that comes at no one’s expense. Inventive chamber-rock arrangements are laden with hooks and drops of meaning. On “1 Billion Dogs,” one of many highlights, drums set up Duterte’s vocals and then let her loose; each pause in the form predicates a next-level utterance. On “Everybody Works,” soft verses and loud choruses alternate just appropriately enough to please, as little phrases cascade within bigger ones. On “Baybee,” the big-beat chorus encourages us to dance, but it doesn’t require it: “I’ll play a game or song/ If you don’t feel right.” That last line repeats as a refrain until we really hear its condition: “If you don’t feel right.” Pop music manipulates; this record only makes you feel good if you want it to. Much has been made of the fact that Duterte made the album in her bedroom, which is mostly a moot point, given that bedrooms are where most good music is made today. In any case, the music sounds great, featuring synth riffs, horn lines, and double-tracked duets of guitar and voice, fricative timbral taffy that catches, tugs, and sticks. Compression comes when the mood calls for it, even as mud is made of lines like “Nerves caught around my neck/ I called out for help/ My words turned into ash/ They went nowhere/ As if I’m barely there,” on “(Bedhead),” a detuned, gauzy fragment of a recording that recollects the best avant-indie: Modest Mouse when noise reigned, Broken Social Scene at peak redux. Ultra-present vocals and sparkly guitars are placed upon a hazy bed of mids, a hybrid approach. At 2:07, an elegant glitch reboots the phrase, and it literally begins again, replenished. This production supports the narrator’s account of getting back on her feet. In a hyper-mediated, post-fact, worn-out world, reliable narrators are few and far between. I wonder about myself sometimes: when I was 22, as Duterte is, or even 23, I was anxiously over-eager, easily made irate. If age is nothing but a number, why do I find myself marveling at the way she assures us on the standout single “The Bus Song,” with measured wisdom, “Take time to figure it out/ I’ll be the one who sticks around”?
