I don't have much to say about this episode that others haven't touched on already but my thoughts are either:

A) Ruby experiences a Summer flashback next week which shows us how she died, in such a way that parallels Ruby's current struggle and illustrates for her how this is a cycle of inheritance she can break by accepting 'i am enough as I am.' She needs to realize this weight was equally heavy and unfair for Summer to carry, and crushed even her in the end.

B) We get the Summer Alive reveal and it is a moment for Ruby to reset her image of who her mother truly was (and it just hurts to remember that everything Ruby knows about her mother is through someone else's lens, like no wonder it is so warped and flawless she feels she can never measure up.) Regardless of where she is or what she's doing, it ultimately is important for Ruby to see her mother as something else than the storybook hero she's been sold. The shoes cannot be filled because Summer is still alive and wearing them, and they don't even look how you thought they did actually.

Whether Summer is alive or not doesn't even really matter at the current junction because we are only dealing with her intersection into Ruby's narrative right now. This Summer shaped mold is breaking next week. It has to.
