Met Gala '24

The Garden Of Time

This year's Met Gala theme is very obviously inspired by the book by J.G. Ballard who is famous for his modern dystopian, satirist books that explore its' ties to human psychology. In this case, the Met has brought these books into fashion that show the beauty of a garden and its inevitable end.

What to expect?

This theme calls for florals of doom but guests could also go for the ethereal vibe of an actual garden. With vintage florals that may pop up as well as a lot of tulle for the flowy delicate feeling of a flower. Using the reference picture shown in a TikTok we could also expect big ball gowns as if you were IN the garden.

With floral imagery being a current trend in fashion it shouldn't be hard to find pieces that match this theme. Jean Paul Gaultier's most recent spring/summer couture collection would be great as it shows the ethereal-ness of the theme using florals.

If you want to go to the darker side of this theme Dior Haute Couture's 2017 Spring/Summer collection is the way to go! Described as a dark garden fairy collection, the mystic of the collection is perfect for this theme.

Of course, we can never tell what these celebs are really going to wear god forbid a man comes in some actual creative pieces other than another black and white suit... All we can do is wait for the actual Met Gala.

Barbie: Building a Blockbuster

Today we have an industry which has drastically transformed over the past decade; film distribution is unrecognizable with the emergence of endless streaming services and a global pandemic. “Will this go to theaters? Is there enough interest in this film for a theatrical release? Would this perform better on our streaming service and bring in more subscribers?” Today studios are comfortable with making low-performing films available earlier to rent or purchase for a premium price on the ancillary market.

Smaller lesser-known indie and foreign films have limited releases which slowly expand over territories as interest, word-of-mouth, and ticket sales grow. High-profile projects on the other hand strategically reserve their release dates years ahead, saying, “This is my space! Schedule your film around me at your own discretion!”

For example, Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water as strong IP had free reign at the box office. The Way of Water opened during the holidays on December 15th and without any strong box office competition nearby, dominated the box office for weeks and inevitably became the third highest-grossing film of all time at $2.3BB! It would be nearly two months later when M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin would finally push The Way of Water off the number 1 spot in early February.

Barbie entered a space where Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One had just been released two weeks prior on July 12. The previous summer (2022), M.I. star Tom Cruise dominated the global box office with Top Gun: Maverick, but Cruise was no match for Barbenheimer.

Barbenheimer emerged when movie fans realized Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer would be released the same day as Barbie more than a year prior to their release. From Universal, it would be Nolan’s first release since his 2021 departure from longtime home Warner Bros where he produced popular films such as Inception, Interstellar, and the Dark Knight series.

It was going to be a showdown! Barbenheimer similar to the online McDonald’s Grimace Shake phenomenon took on a life of its own, and both films—without choice—rode the wave to massive box office success! Moviegoers would either opt for a double-feature or choose to support one over another for many reasons worthy of their own strange conversation.

What made Barbenheimer special was making going to the movies an event— finding your most fashionable pink outfit and heading to the movies, just like Barbie and Ken.

Trending unofficial on-set photos of filming in Venice Beach more than a year prior to its release would be a premonition of the film’s success!

The release of the trailer included endless character posters from a star-studded cast along with a massively successful photo generator for fans to make their own. Try it yourself here!

It would be only a small piece of an expensive marketing campaign from Warner Bros.

The campaign included premieres around the globe featuring lead star Margot Robbie dressed in Barbie’s iconic outfits on the red carpet; amassing millions of views on social media.

The domestic opening weekend box office alone brought in $162MM and an additional $96MM overseas.

Greta Gerwig would become the first female director to join the billion dollar club, another milestone for Gerwig’s rapidly blossoming directorial career. Gerwig's past work includes two Academy Award nominations in screenwriting and directing for Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019).

By September 6th, Barbie would surpass the year’s highest grossing film The Super Mario Bros Movie ($1.3BB) from Universal.

Such lucrative success begs the question, “Why would two films of this caliber open on the same day?” First, the films could not have been any more different from one another, allowing moviegoers to have options from some of the best and adored talent in the industry. Great critic and audience reviews also reflected the quality of both films.

Nolan as a notable director has garnered his own loyal fanbase similar to A24—fans will show up no matter what! Barbie herself also has her own ever-growing fanbase for decades as strong IP from toymaker Mattel.

The releases transformed into an event which could not have been strategically planned or organically grown.

Box office success for any studio is a win for the entire industry.

The industry however has been at a standstill for months due to ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG)—which began a week prior to Barbenheimer’s premiere. Both unions are in their own battle for fair contracts and working conditions while the industry hemorrhages with financial loss—a current estimated loss of $5BB.

Similar serious and unforeseen events have severely disrupted the industry and left everyone scrambling on how to best optimize business operations—similar to the pandemic—leaving studios teetering on whether and when to move release dates.

Warner Bros’ Dune: Part 2 pushed from a November 3 release into March 2024 with talent unable to promote films or participate in awards campaigns.

The Writers Guild Strike would officially end at midnight on September 26th.

SAG remains on strike since July 14th.

As of September 27, Barbie has made $1,427,904,685.

When I google millennial trends right now, it’s so sad that I only get marketing briefs and old articles or articles about how Gen z thinks we’re pathetic along with our trends… but there’s literally dozens of articles every day about Gen z trends.

It’s like once you’re over 25 (I’m 29), the world (marketers) drop you and you’ve become invisible or irrelevant. No, I don’t think the green z trends are cool or would suit my style.

Why should I care about what a generation of teenagers and people in their early 20’s think is fashionable? I swear to god they only grew so entitled because the marketers cater to them so slavishly.

The last time there was a millennial trend was probably in 2016-2017 with the boho summer aesthetic and the sporty casual chick and then in 2018 I learned our generation has become ridiculed because Gen z are brats and it all went downhill from there. I want something new with the same power as the hipster movement and the modern farmhouse aesthetic back in 2015

 Week 6: Social media influencers and slow fashion movements

Over the past few years, a great deal of research and documentation has been done on the social and ecological effects of the fashion business. Across its whole life cycle, it is acknowledged as one of the most polluting industries. Historically, up until around 20 years ago, there were two collections made year (Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter); these days, trend cycles have accelerated, with between 50 and 100 mini collections hitting the market annually (Domingo, 2022). Some of leading company like Zara, H&M are capitalized on fast fashion model, create the greatest quantity of stylish clothing in the shortest amount of time so that customers can keep up with the quick and constantly shifting trend cycles and want to purchase more goods (Ting chi, 2021). Which it led to a hazardous effect on people and polluting the world. Slow fashion is the answer and solution to the issue of pollution and any hazards that effect on human. As it emerges as a sustainable consumption movement and the opposite of fast fashion. Slow fashion aims to slow down the present fashion life cycle by creating no more than four lines each year, emphasizing quality over quantity, and not using mass production (Lai, 2017, p. 82). To make the slow fashion do well, it needs to gain attention from the public and this is where the social media steps in. Social media influencers can be employed as a powerful advertising strategy to close the communication gap between advertisers and consumers about sustainability issues, even if businesses can also utilize social media to directly address these issues (Jacobson, 2022). Influencers like @aditimayer on Instagram with over 90k followers, have a major influence in fashion and an idea for the slow fashion campaign. Slow fashion for now still has a long way to go to gain popularity and recognition in the fashion world. But with collaboration with social media influencers and spread awareness about how fast fashion creates pollution, the public will change their mind and pursuit the slow fashion soon.

The fashion industry is one of the most harmful impacts on our environment from child labour, cheap exports and viscous trend cycles. These issues can be connected to the high demand of new designs from consumers that more and more collections are released each year. Around 20 years ago, the fashion industry would only turn out two collections a year, for autumn/winter and summer/spring, but now to keep up with the ever changing trends, release 50-100 mini collections per year (Domingos, Vale &Faria 2022). 

In contrast to the harmful impacts of fast fashion, slow fashion has been introduced to mitigate some of these harmful processes. The slow fashion movement represents the need to invest in more durable products and timeless designs in order to transform the values of the fashion industry and adopt more sustainable methods. The movement pushes companies to adopt a business model that prioritises quality over quantity and based on slower manufacturing, ethical attitudes and durable well-made products (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022). By providing workers with safe and just working conditions, including fair wages, manufacturers can also improve economic aspects of the process (Zhen et al. 2017, p. 83).

The slow fashion movement relates to digital citizenship, with the idea of respecting each other in online spaces and acting responsibility relates to the movement's respect for sweat shop workers and the concept of sustainability. There are a number of influencers that rave about sustainable fashion and educate viewers about things such as finding local brands and how to get involved in fashion and environmental activism. I love that it has a wide range of sellers with different senses of style so I can find a lot of unique pieces for really good prices. Also buying a second hand item holds some sentimental value because I know it's from years or seasons ago, I'll never be able to find it again. I will keep some garments for literally forever if I can. I've had the same Supre black singlet I bought off of a Facebook group for 5+ years and it has not a single hole! And because my favourite clothing market is every few months it’s the only time I'll buy new clothes but sometimes I won't buy anything because nothing catches my eye. However, the last market I went to I found a brand new North Face jacket for $30! The seller just wanted to get rid of it because her daughter didn't want it even after they brought it home from overseas. Similarly, a lot of second hand sellers at markets or on Facebook just want to get rid of clothes that take up space, like the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure".
