Altrincham Land Former Championship Defender
National League side Altrincham have completed the signing of former Coventry City defender George Burroughs on a free transfer, as confirmed via a statement on the club’s official website. The defender ended a 15-year stay with the Skyblues in the summer and has previously been on trial with League Two side Accrington Stanley, but will make the switch into the National League. Who is George…

Dagenham & Redbridge: A season of ‘nearly’ moments.
The Vanarama National League played host to a record-breaking season, with Wrexham and Notts and County providing the most thrilling title race across Europe.
Elsewhere in the National League, Dagenham & Redbridge, a club predicted to finish within the play-offs, had a season to forget, finishing in a disappointing 10th place, 8 points off of the lucrative play-off positions.
After losing key players, long-serving managers and with many players out of contract in the summer, questions are beginning to be asked about the future of the East London club.
Victoria Road, home of Dagenham & Redbridge FC
A Rocky Start
The Daggers made three first-team signings over the summer, which included Wealdstone’s Nikola Tavares, Weymouth’s Omar Mussa, and Grimsby Town’s David Longe-King, the latter of the three had a season plagued by injuries, however, the central defender was keen to show his commitment to returning to regular action “I want to try and play as many games as I can, Ive personally been disappointed this season with the injuries I’ve had, if I could’ve played every game this season I would have, but I’ve only played 18 or 19 games. So in this last run of games and especially next season, I definitely want to be involved in as many games as possible”.
Daryl McMahon’s Daggers began their campaign in torrid form, winning just two of their first eight games, admittedly two of those games were against top-of-the-table runaways Notts County and Wrexham, but there was cause for concern in the season’s early stages.
The Daggers soon put those defeats behind them, and the East London side responded with back-to-back wins, against Altrincham and Barnet at home, the latter provided a nine-goal thriller, in which Daggers striker Josh Walker notched a hat-trick, including the winner in the 92nd minute, leaving the Daggers in 12th.
October proved to be a rather ‘spooky’ month for the Daggers, winning just once, in their first match of the month, away to play-off-bound Chesterfield. That high was quickly doused when they were convincingly beaten 5-1 by Marc White’s Dorking Wanderers.

Take a peak behind the curtain of the Daggers draw with Boreham Wood.
Winning Winter
Dagenham began November in 13th place but after an upturn in form, which included victories at home to Wealdstone and Scunthorpe, as well as an away win in Solihull. Young Daggers striker Josh Walker proved to be the main man during this period, scoring in two of the three victories, therefore the man in form would be key for the Daggers if they were to get a result in their FA Cup second-round encounter with League Two’s Gillingham. They had progressed to the second round with relative ease, beating eighth-tier Beckenham Town 7-0 and National League strugglers Maidenhead United 1-0 earlier in the year.
Walker stepped up to the billing, scoring in the 80th minute to put his side within touching distance of a home tie against Leicester City, but Scott Kashket, who was born just miles from Victoria Road, broke Daggers hearts in the second minute of extra time, as he bundled home to take the game to a replay.
The agony seemed to weigh on the Daggers, as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Torquay, who eventually were relegated to the National League South. However, the replay at Priestfield was fast approaching, and a spirited performance was needed if the Daggers were to progress.
The game started in the best way imaginable, as club captain Matt Robinson swept home to put the Daggers ahead within 15 minutes, however, the League Two outfit quickly showed their quality, equalising within 10 minutes. The game was at a standstill, until Gillingham took the lead in the 80th minute, and Dagenham’s misery was compounded as centre-back Harry Phipps was sent off just a minute later. But Daryl McMahon’s men dug in, and their resolve was rewarded, as utility man George Saunders popped up at the back post to equalise the tie, potentially sending the tie to penalties. But Kashket had different ideas, this time he turned provider, putting it on a plate for Hakeeb Adelakun who made no mistake to break Daggers hearts at the very last minute once again.
Despite the devastating nature of their defeat, the Daggers would not wallow in defeat, instead, they turned that pain into motivation and went on a strong run, defeating Maidstone 1-0 in back-to-back fixtures, as well as Aldershot, their only defeat in that period came against eventual fourth-placed Woking.
The Daggers’ tails were firmly up as they visited Bromley, who would prove to be a real test for the Daggers. However, the ever-present Josh Hare whipped a free-kick in the bottom corner to potentially move the Daggers up to a season-high fifth place, but as the time ticked down, Bromley began to smell blood, and after a quick free-kick Ben Krauhaus was found at the back post to nod home and send the Daggers back down to seventh.
The quiet before the storm as the Daggers visit Bromley.
A flat finish
The Bromley result weighed heavily on the Daggers, as they began to slide down the table, with five defeats in their next seven fixtures, conceding thirteen goals. In addition to this downslide of form, the club lost its three top scorers, Josh Walker, Junior Morias and Paul McCallum, all left the club over the winter transfer window, the club looked to recuperate with the acquisition of Inih Effiong. The ex-Eastleigh striker notched 8 goals in his 17 Daggers appearances.
Read about Effiong's impressive Daggers home debut.
However, Effiong’s strong form couldn’t save Daryl McMahon’s job, as he was relieved of his duties on the 24th of February, he had been at the club for three years and took the Daggers within a point of the playoffs the season prior.
Dagges first-team coach David Jupp oversaw four fixtures before a permanent appointment was made, which included two 2-1 victories to Notts County and York City, as well as defeats to Wrexham and Maidenhead.
An appointment was made on the 10th of March, with ex-Dagger Ben Strevens, who previously managed Eastleigh.
Ben Strevens overseeing the Daggers' final game of the season away to Barnet.
During his tenure so far the results have been inconsistent, with three wins three draws and four losses, however, the manager is optimistic about what he can achieve at the club next season. When I caught up with the 42-year-old he highlighted the areas he wants to improve in the side next season, “ I want to see energy, I want to see hard work. Pressing with quality, I'm sure every manager wants to see these things, but I want us to be really on the front foot and next season I want us to be a tough place to come and play”.

Spooner takes over at Hyde United
Non-league previews
MARTIN COYNE stays in charge of HYDE UNITED tomorrow despite the appointment of Nick Spooner as manager earlier today (Friday).
"I've decided with the directors that it'll probably be Sunday before I take over," the new boss explained. "It would be wrong to cause any disruption as Martin's prepared the squad for the game and I wasn't at training last night.
"But in any case he's done a great job and has a deep knowledge of the club and the players. I'm just going to let him crack on."
Spooner was among the applicants interviewed last August after Dave McGurk's resignation but lost out to Jim Gannon. He resubmitted his CV following Gannon's dismissal and was re-interviewed yesterday with at least one other candidate.
It's understood all this occurred after the Tigers were twice unsuccessful in getting someone in to run the club on a caretaker basis until the summer.
Spooner said: "The objective is to keep Hyde United in the premier division. That was made clear to me at the interview and in what's been said since. Nobody wants relegation.
"I'll also be looking at strengthening the squad, but at the same time I won't be causing any unnecessary disruption. Everyone's been very complimentary about the players and the atmosphere in the dressing room which remains strong.
"They're a good group who've had some great results and clearly aren't far away. I've seen them while scouting for Bamber Bridge and they have what it takes to go on a run. They're just lacking consistency and belief."
Spooner's appointment means a return to the Project Solar UK Stadium for Gavin McCann who was assistant-manager at the start of Scott McNiven's time in charge. He will be head coach while Coyne continues as number-two.
It's Spooner's first job as a non-league manger but he's eager for the challenge. He explained: "It's something I've wanted to do for a long time and I made sure I'd have Gavin with me. He's a great coach, got an impressive background as a player, and we work very well together. It's great to have this opportunity."
Hyde should be at full strength for the trip to Morpeth in the Pitching In NPL premier division when they will be out to build on last week's victory over Warrington. The three points gained could prove priceless after midweek when Nantwich won 5-1 at Stalybridge and Grantham surprised Ashton United.
Jack Dyche is available after recovering from a wrist injury. Lewis Earl has extended his loan from Stockport County.
The games at Hurst Cross and Bower Fold are both in severe doubt after a week of constant rain and pitch inspections have been arranged for tomorrow morning.
ASHTON UNITED, who are down to face manager Mike Clegg's former club Atherton Collieries, must still be reeling from Tuesday night's match in which they managed to lose to bottom club Grantham after leading 3-1 with six minutes left.
Clegg tweeted on Wednesday: "Never had an experience like that in football. A ten minutes I’ll never forget. But you can’t sulk in this league, you just go again."
Tom Bentham is back from his loan at Warrington Rylands. Sam Baird has now been ruled out for the rest of the season and Tom Warren remains sidelined.
STALYBRIDGE CELTIC are at full strength for the visit of Whitby — if the game goes ahead.
In National League North, CURZON ASHTON, who are unbeaten in their last four matches, take on title-chasing Brackley at the Tameside Stadium.
Scott Wilson remains suspended. Matt Rain, Marcus Poscha, Matt Waters and Dominic Knowles are all injured.
Striker Jack Peers, who netted twice in the 4-3 defeat of Chester while on loan from Altrincham, has now signed for the Nash for an undisclosed fee.
Curzon's results, which include a double over Fylde, show they have no reason to fear the top clubs in the division. However, Brackley are unbeaten in their last five, have won their last two, and are second to Gateshead only on goal difference.
Manager Kevin Wilkin said: "Our boys have to take a great deal of credit that they have come this far and are still in and around the mix. But there’s plenty of work to do and we have to focus on trying to get something at Curzon.
“It’s a very difficult place to go. We’ve said before there are no gimmies in this league and they are having a great season. I'm sure their sights are set on getting a play-off place so it won’t be easy."
In the NPL first division west, GLOSSOP NORTH END go to Leek for a match on the Harrison Park 3G surface.
Keaton Mulvey is doubtful because of illness. Chester midfielder Drew Lowe has had his loan extended until the end of the season. Manager Stuart Mellish has his fingers crossed Rory Fallon might be back by early March.
Freddie Sass joins Dale Latham, David Kuba-Kuba and Levi Phillips on the MOSSLEY injured list ahead of the trip to Trafford where they will be a pitch inspection at 11am.
Everyone else is fit. "We actually have a full bench," said manager Dave Fish. Defender Declan Evans has joined National League North club Southport for an undisclosed fee.

Catch Up Post: SSEUK, ROH, More From CEO x NJPW; This Week’s NJPW on AXS: Dominion & Marathon
Well hey I’m back from vacation. A lot happened while I was away, as NJPW talents basically took their shows on the roads, even beyond the CEO x NJPW event. Speaking of which, there’s an update about that situation below, and I also did upload the Podblast to Place To Be Nation for you to listen to. So why not do that?
Meanwhile, on Saturday 6/30 and Sunday 7/1, much of the NJPW roster was in the UK, for the Strong Style Evolved UK shows that featured, among other things, a title change, as well as a Young Lion in a new gimmick.
Strong Style Evolved United Kingdom - 6/30/2018, Milton Keynes Ice Arena
The Great O-Khan d. Shota Umino (Diving Mongolian Chop)
Yujiro Takahashi & Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] d. Kyle Fletcher & Mark Davis (Ishimori > Fletcher, Bloody Cross)
Tiger Mask IV d. David Starr (Tiger Driver)
WALTER d. Yuji Nagata (lariat)
YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] d. Chris Brookes (Karma)
Will Ospreay [CHAOS] d. Yoshinobu Kanemaru (Stormbreaker)
Takashi Iizuka, Taichi & El Desperado [SZKG] d. Jay White, Toru Yano & Gedo [CHAOS]
British Tag Team Championship: Minoru Suzuki & Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] © d. Kazuchika Okada & Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS] - Suzuki/ZSJ succeed their 2nd defense
- 7/1/2018, Manchester Altrincham Arena
The Great O-Khan d. Dan Duggan (Diving Mongolian Chop)
Yuji Nagata d. Shota Umino (Nagata Lock II)
Takashi Iizuka, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & El Desperado [SZKG] d. YOSHI-HASHI, Toru Yano & Gedo [CHAOS] (Kanemaru > Gedo, Deep Impact)
WALTER d. Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club] (Powerbomb)
Taichi [SZKG] d. Will Ospreay [CHAOS] (Taichi-Style Last Ride after interference)
David Starr d. El Phantasmo, Tiger Mask IV and Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] (Starr > Tiger, rollup following mask pull)
Jay White [CHAOS] d. Chris Brookes (Blade Runner)
Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] d. Kazuchika Okada [CHAOS] (European Clutch)
Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship: Minoru Suzuki [SZKG] d. Tomohiro Ishii [CHAOS] © (Gotch Style Piledriver) - Ishii fails his 2nd defense - Suzuki is the 9th champion
Suzuki-gun as a unit did not lose a single match on this tour, and indeed Suzuki-gun now hold two out of the three titles with Minoru Suzuki himself holding two of them. Zack Sabre Jr. got a revenge win from Sakura Genesis over Okada, with Okada now having had 2 singles losses in a row. [EDIT: Post-main on Night 2, WALTER laid out Ishii and stared down Suzuki. WALTER v. Ishii is now happening at Summer Sizzler on 8/17/2018.]
The Great O-Khan is a new gimmick for now-graduated Young Lion, Tomoyuki Oka. He was described as looking like Kin Corn Karn from the NES Pro Wrestling game. He does Mongolian Chops like Tenzan. Pretty interesting he’s been graduated now, since he really didn’t look like he was ready to be moved on from Young Lion matches, and indeed maybe he still hasn’t. It just makes me miss Katsuya Kitamura, mostly.
These shows either are or should be on RPWOnDemand soon, and will probably end up on NJPWWorld eventually as well.
Also happening on Friday 6/29 and Saturday 6/30 were a PPV/TV taping cycle for Ring of Honor. In NJPW-related matches, the opener of the PPV had The Kingdom defeat EVIL, SANADA & BUSHI to retain the ROH World 6-Man Tag Team titles. (Say, um, where are the NEVER ones lately?) KUSHIDA also lost to Jay Lethal. Dalton Castle miraculously retained against Cody Rhodes and Marty Scurll, despite them telegraphing Cody’s win from a mile away.
This was pretty short-lived, however, as the next night Dalton would lose the title to Jay Lethal from a 4-way match also featuring Cody and Matt Taven. Something tells me this is just tranisitionary so Cody can get the title and have his NWA title match at All In.
Also at the next night, KUSHIDA beat Jonathan Gresham, and LIJ beat both Young Bucks/Adam Page and SoCal Uncensored in a 3-way match.
These shows also featured participation from STARDOM, the Japanese women’s promotion, as Mayu Iwatani and the unit Odeo Tai were in matches here.
Lastly, after being cajoled into it (read: first doubling down), Kenny Omega did tweet out an apology and statement about the booking of Chasyn Rance on the CEO x NJPW show. He is offering refunds for anyone who was affected by the booking, which almost kind of isn’t the point. I’m not even sure anyone in attendance really knew who Chasyn Rance and Aaron Epic were. And to have to be cajoled into it... yeah I don’t know. Due dilligence wasn’t done dilligence here, and just Do Better is what’s being asked. Maybe Omega really didn’t know about Rance’s sex offender status. When told, don’t act like everyone is picking on you. These are grown adults we’re talking about, and yet nobody ever wants to actually take responsibility. Maybe that’s the first step in changing the world.
In a related note, I can honestly say at this point that the delays in starting the CEO x NJPW show may not be on NJPW, but rather CEO. I say this after trying to go to the convention itself on Sunday, and there were delays delays delays in the Fighting Game Championships (to wit, when we went there, Dragonball FighterZ should have been started, however Smash was delayed, which then delayed Tekken 7 [We did get to see THAT final and THAT WAS REALLY COOL], which delayed DBFZ, which delayed Street FIghter V, which was what we really had wanted to see. SFV didn’t start until around 11pm and ended at 2am. Oy...). Which, again, is unprofessional looking, but it seems localized to CEO. As I’d mentioned elsewhere, all the Long Beach shows started on time thus far. And I’m pretty sure San Francisco will as well.
To continue the very-Kenny-Omega-heavy theme here, this week’s premiere episode of NJPW on AXS is a 2-hour special, showing the 60+ minute Best 2 Out of 3 Falls Match for the IWGP Heavyweight title between Kazuchika Okada v. Kenny Omega from Dominion 6.9 at Osaka-Jo Hall. It starts at the usual time, but will fill 2 hours between the match length and commercial breaks.
On Saturday 7/7, starting at 12pm EDT, they are running the “Bullet Club Is Fine” marathon on AXS, with a heavy focus on Bullet Club oriented repeats of NJPW on AXS, to lead in to the main event of G1 Special in San Francisco, naturally.
That show, of course, starts at 8pm EDT / 5pm PDT live on AXS if you are not in San Francisco. If you are outside the USA, it will be on NJPWWorld, which, you may be better off because I am honestly dreading JR and Barnett live on the mic.
G1 Special in San Francisco - 7/7/2018, Cow Palace, San Francisco, CA (AXS TV [USA] / NJPWWorld)
YOSHI-HASHI, Gedo, Rocky Romero, SHO & YOH [CHAOS] v. King Haku [FREE], Tama Tonga [Bullet Club], Tanga Loa [Bullet Club], Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club] & Chase Owens [Bullet Club]
Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano [CHAOS] v. Minoru Suzuki & Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG]
Hiroshi Tanahashi & KUSHIDA v. Adam Page & Marty Scurll [Bullet Club]
NEVER Openweight Championship: Hirooki Goto [CHAOS] © v. Jeff Cobb [FREE]
IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: Matt & Nick Jackson [Bullet Club] © v. EVIL & SANADA [Los Ingobernables]

Artists, venues and events organisers are gearing up for Hidden Altrincham 2017 , the town’s art summer art festival which will take place from 14-24 September 2017. Artwork from over fifty artists will be exhibited in 30 locations across town and there will be daily events and live experiences. The festival will shine a spotlight on Altrincham’s culture, heritage, architecture, independent shops, cafes and restaurants, imaginative residents and exciting businesses and will show locals and visitors that Altrincham is an exciting and creative place to live and work.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Festival organisers, Jo Cushing and Yoko Isami are delighted with the variety of exhibitors who will be taking part in Hidden Altrincham this year. The list includes both budding young talent and internationally successful artists across different genres including collage, fine art, photography, sculpture and ceramics. For the first time, the performing arts will be included with live music, a poetry evening and storytelling.
Local resident, Paola Bazz is taking part in Hidden Altrincham for the second time and nine of her works will be found in the Con Club on Greenwood Street. Italian born Paola has an international reputation and her 3D collages have been exhibited to great reviews in Europe and the USA
Phi Hardaker is a new exhibitor but a well- established artist who describes his work as ‘archaeological sculptural paintings’. Phil creates his art from ceramic clay and found objects and his work celebrates the English tradition of creativity in ceramics. He has been commissioned to produce pieces for the Royal Family and the Houses of Parliament.
Local photographer, Graham Douglas, will be exhibiting a series of photographs of local people in venues around the town. The photographs will celebrate the volunteers who bring so much colour to the town centre with the Altrincham in Bloom project, including the project manager, Sarah Walmsley.
During the ten days of the festival Altrincham will be buzzing with an amazing variety of events. The largest will be an attempt to break the World Record for Life Drawing. This event is for over 16s only and both clothed and unclothed models will be available. Anyone looking for a spooky shiver is invited to a ghost story evening at atmospheric Mort Subite bar on Greenwood Street. There are several events for children, including a Sketch Altrincham session in Goose Green, Animation in Fablab and a Spot the Fox arts trail around the town. The creative talent of Altrincham will also be represented by exhibitions and Open Days with Atrincham Arts Society, Altrincham Embroiderer’s Guild and others.
The value of Hidden Altrincham has been recognised by the Manchester based arts and travel website, Creative Tourist , which is sponsoring the festival. Memphis Depay was a flop at Manchester United but has been reborn and will star for Holland
Perhaps there is no more concise personification of Dutch football that loses its way than Memphis Depay in a red leather jacket and cowboy hat, arrival by Rolls-Royce to play for Manchester United reserves in Altrincham
Depay was the big hope of his generation when he left PSV Eindhoven for Old Trafford in the summer of 2015.
When I was 20, I went to a World Cup and at 21 I was Dutch champion and top scorer, winner of the Johan Cruyff Trophy for the best young talent in the Netherlands and voted for France Soccer the best young player in the world.
Memphis Depay was reborn in League 1 and is a dangerous man for the Netherlands "

The & # 39; Altringham Cowboy & # 39; failed to make the connection after coming to Manchester United
United-boss Louis van Gaal fought out the interest of Paris Saint-Germain to beat the winger for £ 25 million, reached awarded him a four-year contract for £ 100,000 a week and placed him in the legendary No. 7 shirt.
At the age of 22, his days in Manchester were counted. His shape was terrible, his attitude worse than after his mistake at Stoke on Boxing Day, he was relegated to the reserves, where he ignored Wayne Rooney's advice not to be in one of his & # 39; beautiful things & # 39; to appear.
Depay found no way back; omitted from the FA Cup final in 2016, written off as immature and unable to follow instructions, he only played 20 minutes in the Premier League for Jose Mourinho and was sold to Lyon in January 2017 for a loss of £ 10 million.
With Holland there was a bust-up with Robin van Persie when the qualification campaign for Euro 2016 was unraveled and the national side reached their low point when they were beaten in France 4-0 on their way to the final of the Last year's World Cup. Van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder were at the end and a nation that struck the world of Total Football in a crisis.

Depay is an important part of the Dutch revival under the former Everton boss Ronald Koeman
Debate raged about the demise of the Dutch competition, caught in a vicious circle in which talented, technical young players excelled in a weak competition, were picked up by rich clubs from abroad, and then quickly thrown away if they had trouble making the move or adapting to lifestyle changes.
Depay was a classic example of the fact that modern football went wrong. Fundamental policy change was required, but there was no time for the inclusion of one.
Fundamental policy change was demanded, but there was no time for the shooting of an organic revival was seen with a new wave of talent bursting through Ajax.
It was said in United that the young winger had one.

A strong Ajax equals a strong Netherlands and the United States of America. it was once like this: in the 1970s with the Cruyff generation, in the eighties with Van Basten, Rijkaard and Co, in the 1990s with De Boers and Bergkamp.
Under Peter Bosz, the club reached the Europa League final and this season under Erik ten Hag they won the league and cup twice and returned to the Champions League knockout phase, just missing the final
All with their fast, exciting brand of football and young stars such as Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt
Outside of this generation at Ajax, there was the influence of Merseyside, where Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum had grown up to be European champions.
Wijnaldum left PSV at the same time as Depay but without the fanfare.
The development of he and Van Dijk is steadily intensifying to. He is three years older, the midfielder with an eye for goal instead of a flair player greeted the future of his country, joining Newcastle not Manchester United. every new challenge and coming to Anfield to work with Jurgen Klopp.

EFL: Big-name managers, Love Island and 'old' players - What's been going on in pre-season?
The new season. Renewed optimism, fresh hope… or just a familiar feeling of dread?
Understandably – given the small get-together in Russia – you might have taken your eye off what’s been going on below the Premier League since May.
Luckily for you, BBC Sport has put together a list of some things you might have missed over the summer – and a few you things you probably didn’t.
There’s a new guy in charge
Arguably the biggest summer arrivals in the EFL have come off the pitch.
Derby County handed Frank Lampard his first managerial role, after Gary Rowett left to take over at Stoke City following their relegation from the Premier League.
Lampard’s former England boss Steve McClaren is the new man in charge at QPR, Swansea have rewarded Graham Potter for his success with Swedish side Ostersund by giving him the chance to lead them back to the top flight and former Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst has replaced Mick McCarthy at Ipswich.
Meanwhile, Leeds appointing a new boss is rarely headline news these days given that they’ve now had 11 since February 2012, but the hiring of former Argentina boss Marcelo Bielsa is seen as a real coup.[1][2]
Media playback is not supported on this device
In League One, Bradford and Fleetwood are under the charge of rookie bosses in Michael Collins and Joey Barton respectively, with Barton’s appointment garnering slightly more attention.
In League Two, Paul Tisdale’s reign as the longest-serving manager in the top four divisions was short-lived as he swapped Exeter City for MK Dons after 12 years. He’s already been back to raid his former side for two coaches and three players.
QUIZ: Can you name all 21 new appointments in the EFL this summer? (We’ve given you a head start)[3]
READ MORE: Lampard & Barton’s EFL managerial survival guide[4]
You say goodbye, I say hello
In contrast to last summer, where two Championship clubs spent more than £15m on a player, it’s been a slightly more sedate transfer window. So far, at least.
Nottingham Forest have been this summer’s big spenders, with Benfica midfielder Joao Carvalho arriving for £13.2m and Bournemouth striker Lewis Grabban for about £6m.
Stoke City’s loan signing of Wolves striker Benik Afobe, with an obligation to buy in January, was eye-catching given the 25-year-old had only joined the Molineux side from Bournemouth 11 days earlier.
<!–
Leeds United signed Middlesbrough striker Patrick Bamford in a deal that could end up costing £10m, making the former Chelsea man their most expensive signing since the acquisition of Liverpool forward Robbie Fowler in November 2001.
Meanwhile, it’s hard to imagine anyone has had a busier summer than Peterborough’s club secretary.
After a ninth-placed finish last season, the League One side have signed 15 players, while 18 have left. Never mind surnames on the back of their shirts, don’t be surprised if Steve Evans’ side take to the pitch for Saturday’s game against Bristol Rovers wearing name badges.
Home in time for Love Island?
As in-match Twitter updates go, Crewe’s official account tweeting: “HALFTIME 3-0! I’ve had a word with the Ref and he’s only playing 15 minutes next half so we can all go watch #LoveIsland” is probably one of the more unusual efforts.
It turns out that the answer to the question: “What would happen if you let one of your players do your club’s social media?” is: “Pretty much exactly what you’d expect”.
Alex captain George Ray was given the night off on-field duties for their friendly with Altrincham and sent to the stands to keep the League Two side’s fans up to date with events on the pitch.
Ray’s approach to his new role was certainly… unique. And, to round off a night when he referred to a cross as a “walnut whip” and said the attendance for the game was “80,403 take away the 80 thousand”, the former Wales Under-21 international signed off with a joke straight out of a Christmas cracker:
<!–
Crewe fans will be hoping Ray puts slightly more effort into his playing duties once the season starts.
Also getting in on the popularity of ITV2 show Love Island were Aston Villa, who announced the signing of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Andre Moreira by using some edited footage from the villa.[5]
The villa. The Villa… See? Ah, I’m sure George Ray liked it.
Ajax come unstuck in Walsall
Of all the improbable results in the summer few stand out quite like Walsall’s 2-0 win over four-time European Cup winners Ajax.
New signing Andy Cook scored twice to give the Saddlers, four-time winners of the Birmingham Senior Cup, a memorable victory in front of 2,449 fans at the Banks’s Stadium.
<!–
“Full credit to the lads,” was boss Dean Keates’ rather understated response.[6]
The Saddlers were not the only EFL side to host high-flying foreign opponents in pre-season, as Sheffield United secured a creditable 1-1 draw against Italian giants Inter Milan.
CHAMPIONSHIP PREDICTOR: What will the final table look like?[7]
‘Michael is very old’
It’s not unheard of for football managers to want to lead every department of a club.
However, new Chesterfield boss Martin Allen took things to a new level this summer. Perhaps thinking the club’s fans needed a bit of a lift after successive relegations to the National League, he decided to write up the club’s signings for their website.
The former Barnet boss, known as ‘Mad Dog’, flatteringly referred to 38-year-old defender Michael Nelson as “very old” but “fit as a butcher’s dog”,[8] while goalkeeper Shwan Jalal received the high praise of being a “solid, reliable and decent keeper”.
<!–
Wonderfully, Allen signed off all the press releases with “Take care, Martin”.
Also new to the National League this season are Salford City.
Co-owned by five former Manchester United players, the Reds have made a number of high-profile signings this summer, including Peterborough midfielder Danny Lloyd and Aberdeen striker Adam Rooney.
The acquisition of the latter saw the Dons, Motherwell and Accrington Stanley comment on the amount Salford were paying on wages[9] – leading co-owner Gary Neville to tweet:
<!–
Only time will tell if Salford’s (apparently) big-spending will be enough to see them win promotion to the EFL this season.
Take care, Ian.

Hyde United Managers
1932-39
William Stapley (trainer)
Kent man Bill Stapley was a centre-half who started out at Dulwich Hamlet before signing for West Ham. He never made the first team and in 1908 moved north to join his brother Harry at Glossop North End who were then a Football League club. Bill was capped six times for England at amateur level. He died in 1964.
1945-47
Matt Swinnerton
Altrincham player and a Cheshire League referee. Also managed Altrincham and Winsford United. Quit Hyde citing differences with the directors over team selection.
1947-49
Gordon Clark (player-coach)
Yorkshire-born full-back who made 64 appearances for Manchester City from 1936 to 46, Clark was also the nephew of Willie Applegarth who won gold in the 4x100 yards relay at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. He joined Hyde from Waterford and was later manager at Distillery (Northern Ireland), Aldershot, West Bromwich Albion and Peterborough. There is even a tale that he was offered the Juventus job in the mid-1960s. Finished up as Arsenal chief scout and died in 1997.
1949-51
Harold Brunton
Something of a mystery man who merited almost no mention in the local press. At the 1950 annual meeting, club chairman Joseph Rhodes said his admiration of Brunton was so great that he would have paid him a salary equivalent to all the other wages paid by the club.
1953-54
Tommy Wright
Glossop man who had been on the books at Manchester City and Hull City and played for Accrington Stanley in the Football League third division north. Also player-manager at Sligo Rovers and Lancaster City.
1957-58
Jack Smith
England Schoolboy international from Yorkshire who played for Huddersfield, Newcastle United, Manchester United, Port Vale, Blackburn, Macclesfield Town and Congleton in a career stretching from 1932 to 1952. When he joined Manchester United in 1938 it was for a club record fee of £6,500. Managed Macclesfield for four seasons from 1951. Resigned Hyde job due to ill-health. Died in 1975.
1958-59
Wally Boyes
Won three England caps in the 1930s and scored for West Bromwich in their 4-2 victory over Sheffield Wednesday in the 1935 FA Cup final. Transferred to Everton for £6,000 in 1938. Player-coach at Notts County in 1949 and player-trainer at Scunthorpe in 1950-53. Player-manager at Retford in 1954. Joined Swansea as trainer in 1959 but illness forced him to retire the following year. Died in 1960.
1959-60
George Smith
Former Manchester City and Chesterfield forward who joined Hyde from Mossley as player-manager but made no appearances. Also managed Prestwich Heys. Left Ewen Fields quoting business reasons. Died in 2013. (Not the same person as the George Smith who managed Hyde in 1975).
1960-61
Peter Robinson
Played in midfield for Manchester City, Notts County, Chesterfield, Buxton, Kings Lynn and Macclesfield, where he was manager in 1958-59. Later served in backroom roles at Manchester City and Preston North End. Died in 2000.
1961-63
Frank Clempson
Made 15 appearances for Manchester United between 1948 and 53. Also played for Stockport County and Chester. Died in 1970 aged only 40.
1963-64
Les Battrick
Director who joined the Hyde United board around 1958. When the club was unable to pay anyone to replace Frank Clempson he accepted the role of manager on a voluntary basis.
1964-68
Bill Pheasey
Club secretary who had run the reserves very successfully in the late 1950s. Was in charge of Hyde when they joined the newly-formed Northern Premier League in 1968 but was sacked in October when they were bottom of the table with only one win from ten matches and out of the FA Cup and NPL Cup. Received a lifetime ban from the FA after a mystery letter from a fictitious address accused Hyde of making illegal payments. The ban was lifted after a year.
1968-72
Eric Webster
One of the stalwarts of Hyde's double Cheshire League title-winning side of the mid-1950s. Returned to Ewen Fields to manage the reserves and then took over the first team. Led the Tigers to two very respectable NPL finishes but the club was wiped out financially by the increases in travelling and wages, and had to return to the Cheshire League. Sacked in February, 1972. Webster managed Stockport County in the fourth division from 1982-85 as well as Stalybridge Celtic, Runcorn and Ashton United. Played for Ashton, Macclesfield, Nantlle Vale, Pwllheli and Stalybridge plus one game for Manchester City. Died in 2016.
1972-74
Les Sutton
Arguably Hyde United's most successful manager, winning eight trophies over his two periods in charge. Started at Manchester United in the 1950s, alongside the Busby Babes, but after being released made a name for himself as an uncompromising centre-half at Stalybridge Celtic. Replaced Eric Webster as manager of Hyde's reserves before taking over the first team. Quit in 1974 to manage Stalybridge but returned three years later. In 1981-2, under his leadership, Hyde swept the board in the Cheshire League and returned to the NPL where they enjoyed an impressive first season. Controversially sacked in 1983, Sutton later managed Witton Albion, Curzon Ashton and Mossley. Was briefly back at Ewen Fields in the late Eighties as a member of Pete O'Brien's staff.
1974-75
Jack Dobson
Veteran defender who made more than 450 appearances in 1958-60 and 1963-74. By his own admission he was probably too nice to be a manager but took over at a difficult time and was badly hampered by a lack of funds caused by the club's recurring financial problems.
1975
George Smith
Birmingham City goalkeeper who also played for Ashton United, Stalybridge Celtic, Mossley, Buxton and Altrincham. Managed Stalybridge and Icelandic club Keflavik before moving to Ewen Fields in January, 1975, where he ruffled some feathers by insisting the players called him boss rather than George. Quit Hyde in the summer to take charge at Al Hilal and stayed in Saudi Arabia for many years. Did some scouting on his return to England. Died around 2018.
1975-77
John Bain
Tough Scots-born full-back who started at Bury where he made 11 first-team appearances. Played for Altrincham and Mossley before transferring to Hyde in January, 1973. Originally caretaker boss and then fully appointed in September, 1975. Was asked to resign in October, 1977. He refused to do so and was sacked.
1977-83
Les Sutton (See above)
1983-86
Peter Wragg
One of non-league football's managerial greats but was never quite accepted by the Hyde fans, even though he took the club to the FA Cup first round in 1983. This was possibly because of his Bower Fold background and Les Sutton's dismissal. After starting at Leek, Wragg led Stalybridge to the 1980 Cheshire League title, then moved to Chorley, who finished second to the Tigers in 1982 and were "promoted" with them to the NPL. Quit Hyde in 1986, ostensibly because of plans to install a synthetic pitch, but described his time at the club as akin to an unconsummated marriage. Moved to Macclesfield where he won the NPL treble of league, league cup and president's cup in 1987. Also managed Halifax and made two returns to Stalybridge where he achieved the seemingly impossible in helping them avoid relegation from the Conference in 1995. Later worked in sports promotions and was often seen carrying the Premier League trophy on to the pitch to be presented to the champions.
1986-90
Pete O'Brien
One of Hyde United's favourite sons and most prolific strikers. Returned to Ewen Fields after five years as manager of Stalybridge Celtic and was in charge during one of the Tigers' most purple patches. Led the club to five cups, the semi-finals of the FA Trophy, two Clubcall Cup finals and made them into genuine promotion contenders. Joined Witton Albion in 1990, taking them to the NPL title and the 1992 FA Trophy final. Had a brief spell in charge at Glossop North before coming back to Hyde in 1993 when he won the Manchester Premier Cup and took the club to the NPL Cup final. Shocked the supporters by quitting to join Droylsden at the end of the season but was at the Butchers Arms less than six months. Died in 1996.
1991
Graham Bell
Accomplished former Football League midfielder who stepped up to take over as caretaker manager following Pete O'Brien's departure and was then confirmed in the role. Results were poor and it was said he had to deal with a lot of dissent in the dressing room. Sacked in mid-April and signed for Mossley.
1991-2
Cliff Roberts
Joined Hyde from Northwich Victoria who were then a long-established Conference (National League) club and had enjoyed a lot of FA Cup success under his management. Struggled to make an impact at Ewen Fields and the fans became increasingly unhappy with his style of play. With the club facing mounting financial problems, he agreed to waive the final seven months of his contract. Later joined the coaching staff at Bury and was chief scout at Burnley.
1992-93
Ged Coyne
Former Hyde United player who had been at Manchester United and Manchester City in the 1970s, Brother of Tigers striker Peter Coyne. Started his managerial career at East Manchester, then went to Mossley before moving to Ewen Fields. Was hampered by a shortage of funds and the deteriorating state of the ground and Baspograss pitch but made some good signings. Sacked after refusing to resign. Later managed Glossop North End. Now lives in Malta.
1993-94
Pete O'Brien (See above)
1994-2001
Mike McKenzie
Ran the all-conquering Astro Sunday team before winning the NPL Cup at Winsford United and leading the club into the NPL premier division and the first round of the FA Cup. Came to Hyde after an unhappy spell at Witton and was an immediate sensation. Playing fast, exciting, attacking football, his side reached the first round of the FA Cup and two FA Trophy semi-finals, taking many Conference scalps along the way including that of champions Stevenage in 1996. Unfortunately, Hyde became victims of their own success and their many cup runs meant that fixture congestion prevented them winning the league title they merited.
2001-02
Dave Nolan
Nolan's appointment came as a surprise to many — especially as he was teamed up with Stalybridge defender Martin Filson who was separately recruited — but the directors took a gamble hoping the 100-per-cent attitude that made him so popular and successful as a player would carry over into management. Sadly, it didn't and Hyde only escaped relegation as Bishop Auckland were demoted for having a sub-standard ground. Things got no better the following season and Nolan was sacked in October, 2002.
2002
Gordon Hill
Seems to have been appointed on the spur of the moment after being sent by the PFA to take care of the managerless Hyde side as they prepared to meet Barrow in the FA Cup. Perhaps the directors were hoping his status as a member of Tommy Docherty's FA Cup-winning Manchester United side of 1977 was some sort of guarantee of success, but if so they were badly mistaken. Also riled supporters by poking fun at the club in an interview with BBC Radio Manchester. Sacked after winning just two of 19 league and cup games. Also managed Chester City.
2002-08
Steve Waywell
Only Hyde boss to win back-to-back titles: the NPL first division in 2003-04 followed by the league championship. A former Hyde player who managed Curzon Ashton from 1986 to 93. Moved to Leigh RMI (Genesis) in 1995 and took them from the NPL first division into the Conference. In 1998 they held a Fulham side managed by Kevin Keegan to a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage in the first round of the FA Cup before losing the replay 2-0. At Christmas, 2007, Hyde were top of Conference North but then collapsed to finish ninth. Waywell, once a hero, was swiftly reduced to zero and his status wasn't helped when he admitted to having no interest in cups. He resigned at the start of the following season. Later briefly managed Chorley.
2008-11
Neil Tolson
The hugely likeable Tolson joined Hyde as a player and served as Waywell's number-two before becoming manager. Born in Dudley, the birthplace of Duncan Edwards, he played for six Football League clubs and was once viewed as having the potential to be a second Allan Clarke. Had the misfortune to manage Hyde during a period of great upheaval during which the club was wound up in the High Court and then entered into a deal with Manchester City which, for a time, led to many changes that left supporters deeply unhappy such as wearing white rather than red shirts and dropping the United suffix. Was sacked at the same time as many directors resigned. Joined the coaching staff at Altrincham and is now coaching in the USA.
2011-12
Gary Lowe
Not the most popular choice when appointed but quickly won the fans over as his side started the season with a record-breaking run of ten consecutive wins playing a stylish, passing game. Won the title by five points from Guiseley to lead Hyde into the National League for the only time in their history, then quit during the summer after a disagreement with club owner Jon Manship. Started his managerial career at Woodley Sports and was in charge at Curzon Ashton when they beat League Two Exeter City in the FA Cup. Returned to Ewen Fields in January, 2015, when the club was in freefall after a traumatic second season in the National League. Seemed to have rediscovered a winning formula at the start of the 2015-16 season but results tailed off in the new year and he was sacked in March as the Tigers neared their third relegation in as many years. Moved to Spain to manage a bar and died there at the end of 2020.
2012-15
Scott McNiven
Oldham Athletic striker who was caretaker manager at Hyde in partnership with Steve Halford after Neil Tolson was sacked. Enjoyed a great first season in which the Tigers won some notable victories in the National League and were very briefly on the fringes of the play-off places. The following year was a disaster. Hyde won only one league game and became something of a figure of fun as Sky Sports' Jeff Stelling took to wearing a Tigers' scarf on the odd occasions they led in a Saturday game. Things got no better the next season and McNiven resigned after two heavy Christmas defeats by Stalybridge Celtic.
2015-16
Gary Lowe (see above)
2016-19
Darren Kelly
Derry-born defender who won 11 Northern Ireland caps at under-21 level and played for clubs including Derry City, Carlisle United and York City. Came to Hyde having managed Oldham Athletic and Halifax Town. Was unable to prevent relegation in his first season but led the Tigers back into the NPL premier division and to the first round of the FA Cup where they were home to Milton Keynes Dons in game televised by the BBC. The Big Pop Tango Marathon - 11th - 13th August 2017
The Big Pop 2017 was the first edition of the marathon of John, Stephanie, Paris, Helen and Andrea. Maybe you already met them somewhere in Europe as dancers or DJs. They are not newcomers. It was in fact a surprise that they waited so long before organizing something. I think it is just because they wanted to be sure to offer something nice.
There are so many options to travel during summer that it can be strange to choose Manchester in place of the sea and the South. I was appealed by the insurance of a good organisation and by the promotion which had a style all of her own. When you see the details, you can already guess organizers are fully involved. Even in this situation, it was a surprise to feel a wonderful armosphere, even better than expected. Speaking with friends after the event, we all had the feeling that we received more than what was on the paper.
Big pop marathon takes place in Manchester but not exactly in the city center. The marathon is organized in the suburb, in Altrincham. This city is not far from the airport and has everything of the little british town with a little center with bars, restaurants and fish and chips and long streets with typical houses and gardens (as you can imagine in UK). In August, it was a good moment to wander in the streets. Not so far, I was really pleased to visit Dunham massey hall, a parc with a castle and a lot of dears. But let’s come back to the tango.
One special characteristic of the event - there was two venues, a wedding house for day and evening milongas, and the ballroom of a football club for the night milongas. English rules explain this situation as most of the places have to close after midnight (same rule as for the pubs). The wedding house offer a big dancefloor and a lot of space to relax, have a snack, drink, etc. The place was nice and relaxing with polo players in the garden. The organizers took care of the air and talk powder as it was getting warm really fast. The night place was smaller and simpler but with a long bar and space all around to sit with tables. In fact, I found the dancefloor better in this second place. The two places were located in the same area so it was not too hard to leave one to join the other. For the accomodation, the best option is to select your hotel just between both, so you just have 10 minutes walking to each places.
The best point of the event was the participant selection. The mix of well knowns and open unknows created a good vibration. Dancers came from all around Europe and I think it was not so easy to attract dancers in a non-capital city. The other international event I went in UK was mainly composed of dancers from UK. In this configuration, you feel quickly the group of dancers by cities or closed friendship. In Manchester, you could clearly see the support of the community with a number of friends and also organizers. I recognized several groups of dancers that usually bring a positive energy to an event. There was also people from UK and the biggest group was of course from London. Usually, Manchester dancers are travelling to London but this time, it was the turn of London’s dancers to travel to Manchester. Just between ourselves, I heard a lot of bad comments about London’s dancers before the event and I didn’t understand why after meeting directly these dancers in Manchester.
You will not be surprise if I tell you the bad point of the event was the food during the days and the evenings. “Yeah, French people speaking about food in UK, what a surprise...”. The catering was organized by the wedding house and it was not tasty at all. The worse was the staff, unpleasant and stubborn. Before the end of the event, the organizers were already considering to change for a restaurant near by in case they decide to go for a next edition. But note, there was also food at night, a home-made buffet. And this one was pretty good. People arriving for the night milonga were pleased to have extra food to fill up the bellies before dancing until dawn.
I had only good mood with the music but I didn’t expect less from John is a DJ and will really take care of the music. Arriving late on Friday night, I skipped the first milongas and missed Juliana Thutlwa music. A lost opportunity for the music but it seems I escaped the first part of the marathon where people are all gathering and still trying to fit in the event. Sets of Jens Dörr and Mary Meriu Wu were the best (I would say it was nice to listen again to Jens but it was even nicer to discover Mary), also with the banana duo of Dark Oh and John at night. Night milongas ended too early. There was still quite a good number of dancers when they had to close on Saturday. I skipped also Benedicte as I decided to rest but I listen to her selection frequently in Bruxelles. The afternoon with La Ros offers nice tandas but with an end I really dislike (overspeed and strange music). She gave me at this moment an emotional rollercoaster and in place of finishing the marathon in the best way, I just sat. I was really sad after a good Sunday afternoon.
When I read back the text, I think I described the variety of emotions that offered the Big PoP. The review is sometimes sharp but just because the Big Pop 2017 was one of the best first edition of a marathon. I forgot to speak about the team who did a great job all over the event. From the welcoming moment to the end, they were present and supporting.

Media captionWayne Rooney arrives in court on drink-drive charge
Former England captain Wayne Rooney has appeared in court and admitted drink-driving.
He was arrested when police stopped a car in Wilmslow, Cheshire, in the early hours on 1 September.
The 31-year-old was banned from driving for two years and ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order.
Rooney was also ordered to pay £170 when he appeared at Stockport Magistrates’ Court.
‘Unforgivable’
The court heard Rooney was almost three times the legal limit when he was stopped by police at 02:00 BST.
A breathalyser test showed his alcohol level was 104 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath.
The drink-drive limit in England and Wales is 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.

In a statement issued after the hearing, the Everton footballer said: “I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgment in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong.
“I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.
“Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service.”

Wearing a blue suit with his hands in his pockets, Rooney walked into the court building accompanied by a small entourage.
Kate Gaskell, prosecuting, said a police officer on patrol was on duty in Altrincham Road, Wilmslow, at 02:10 BST when they noticed the rear tail-light of a Volkswagen Beetle on the left hand side had gone out.
She said the officer intended to follow the vehicle but it pulled over with Rooney seen to be at the wheel with a female in the front passenger seat.
Ms Gaskell said the footballer provided a positive roadside breath test before he was taken to a police station where the reading was confirmed.
Image caption The judge told Rooney: “You placed yourself and other road users at risk”
The court heard that Rooney currently had three points on his driving licence for a speeding offence on August 24 2016.
Rooney’s legal team had asked District Judge John Temperley to consider not imposing a community order because of his ongoing charitable work.
However, the judge said he was “not convinced” that imposing a large fine “would have the same effect”.
‘A serious matter’
Rooney’s lawyer, Mike Rainford, told the court it was likely that Everton would fine the player two weeks’ wages, which the BBC understands to be about £300,000.
Judge Temperley said: “This is a serious matter… you placed yourself and other road users at risk as a result of your poor judgement that night.
“I accept your remorse is genuine and that you are aware of the adverse affects the events of that night have had, not least on your family.”
Rooney was also told to pay £85 prosecution costs and a victim surcharge for the same amount.
BBC Sports Editor Dan Roan has been in court following proceedings.

Manchester United should sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now… he is the wrong man for the job
A Manchester United Unicef dinner in late January revealed the picture was far more complicated than it first seemed when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrived as manager.
The Norwegian's team had seven straight wins, leaving you wondering why the club hadn't thought of going back to the old school sooner.
But guests who had paid out for tables at the Old Trafford event were puzzled by Paul Pogba 's apparent disappearance after 45 minutes. They found Alexis Sanchez less than enthusiastic when approached.
Manchester United should sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – he is the wrong man for the job
"The Spaniards – Juan Mata, Other Herrera and David The Gea – were a different class," says one guest. Solskjaer's powers of transformation obviously had their limits.
The fundamental humility and humanity of this individual, pictured collecting his clothes from an Altrincham dry cleaners this winter, were like a warm breeze after the preening and self-absorption of Jose Mourinho.
But if the past has taught United anything, it is a fundamental niceness cannot sustain a football team.
Solskjaer provided hope after Jose Mourinho's departure but his side have struggled recently
There was a myriad of miseries in the team's defeat by relegated Cardiff on Sunday, not least the footage of fans remonstrating with Pogba. But a Premier League 'value for money' table, published by Sporting Intelligence, surely topped the lot.
It revealed Cardiff paid each of their players an average £ 28,161 for every point they won this season – better value than any side. United were rock bottom, dishing out a monument £ 99,010 per point – nearly £ 20,000 more than any other club.
It says everything that they could not find a way to beat two of the three relegated sides in the season's last week.
Solskjaer now reflects that the necessary rebuild could take years, although it is impossible to sustain an argument he can lead the permanent and complex job of a club which finds itself staggering around in the dark.
There is no evidence that Solskjaer knows what to do with the players at his disposal
He has been a welcome release from the intimidating conduct of Mourinho.
But beyond his vague attempt to introduce more pace, in keeping with the United of yore, there has been no evidence he has known what to do with those at his disposal. The players sense it. It's hard to find any exhilaration in their ranks about what lies ahead.
The manager has relentlessly talked about or improving their work rate, although this side has covered less distance than the opposition in 18 of the 21 games they have played under him. Management requires an edge; a professional distance between players and leader.
Paul Pogba's future is another issue resolving this summer
Clubs as adrift as United can haemorrhage talent. Pogba had wanted to leave for Real Madrid. Now it is thought he just wants to leave.
There is thought to be some enthusiasm for Marcus Rashford at Manchester City, who have always been ready to raid United in their relentless quest for self-improvement. Old Trafford can no longer recruit players on the basis of reputation and legend. Monumental salaries may no longer be enough.
United's rush to make Solskjaer's appointment was permanent in keeping with the way they have lurched from one disaster to the next without any method in the past six years.
A little due diligence would have told them that Solskjaer was not a visionary in his letter managerial time at Cardiff in 2014. He arrived with a philosophy of ball retention but Cardiff – relegated in the season he arrived – lacked any identity. He looked out of his depth.
Having Mike Phelan as assistant manager shows that United is obsessed with the past
United do not seem capable of any diligence as they are funny for a way out; obsessed by the spirits of ages, they conjure with Mike Phelan, Darren Fletcher and Rio Ferdinand for strategic and recruitment roles, when none of the above have any experience or track record.
Stuart Webber, the sporting director who has delivered Norwich and Huddersfield to the Premier League, would be doubtless considered too prosaic for the so-called Theater of Dreams.
So, too, Dan Ashworth, architect of England's winning structure before the left for Brighton.
Edwin van der Sar, chief executive of the young Ajax side who has moved mountains, has not entered the conversation.
If Mauricio Pochettino wants to leave Tottenham then United should make their move
A club with a modicum of curiosity and intellectual energy would have spoken to all three.
We are about to hear more about 'Ole at the Wheel'. The imminent 20th anniversary celebrations of United's 1999 Munich miracle will prompt a new wave of sentiment. But the pink hue or past glories did not secure a trophy for anyone.
Better Solskjaer goes now and the embarrassment of a U-turn than another grim autumn and a sacking by Christmas.
If Mauricio Pochettino feels a Champions League final is as far as he can take Tottenham , then United should make their move. If not, they should be seeking alternatives.
As Sir Alex Ferguson was fond of reminding us, the spoils in football go to those who are modern and progressive. The ones who look ahead.
