Summary of My Art in 2024

I wish everyone a happy and successful New Year 2025! Lots of health and happiness and I hope there will be no such troubles as in 2024. By the way, I'm posting this on 1.1.2025.

By the way, that's my name on Discord and Deviantart so that no one gets confused by the fact that it says my art blog name on the templates instead of my current name.

This time I finally have my review table, or rather a summery of my drawings that I did in the past 2024. As at the beginning of 2024, I did a special New Year's celebration in Brazil for my beloved friends with two drawings, where adults celebrate on one, while children and teenagers on the other, of course as part of my Quack Pack AU and a crossover of almost all Donald Duck media. During 2024, I had numerous troubles and obligations so I didn't have time to do everything regarding my drawings, so I succeeded in some things, and in some things I didn't. I was certainly glad that I did a lot with you throughout 2024 through special weeks and months dedicated to my favorite characters, although unfortunately I didn't do all the topics. Still, it was fun for me to do certain things. 2024 was certainly a challenging year for me and like 2023 I did new things that I had never done before and I was glad that I managed to do it. Especially regarding the 90th birthday of my favorite duck, Donald Duck.

Unfortunately, like 2023, 2024 also had its tragic events so I did and drew certain drawings dedicated to that, as well as a dedication to one of my favorite manga and anime authors Akira Toriyama who left this world in March 2024, so I drew during the month related to Dragon Ball and I put my favorite characters from Donald Duck media (comics, video games and cartoons) and Duckverse with Dragon Ball characters. Yes, published at the end of April 2024, since I had not done certain drawings before. If anyone asks why I put a Dragon Ball drawing for the month of March.

As in previous years, this time I did some crossovers with ducks, such as Super Mario, Dragon Ball, some adult sitcoms like Smiling Friends and of course a crossover with Looney Tunes. I also drew on the topic of history, superheroes, fantasy, space, customs, world travel and more. For the last three months, I unfortunately gave up drawing a bit due to the bad events that happened then, but I did as much as I could, especially in December, because it is not right to give up during the biggest Christmas and New Year holidays. All in all, thank you very much for supporting me during 2024 and continue to support me.

A decade of art (and also the entirety of my teen years)!

I was only intending to put together my 2022 summary of art, seeing as I hadn’t made that yet-- and then found I also hadn’t made my 2021 summary, and fell down a rabbit hole of nostalgia from there :)

It’s interesting how as I progress as an artist, I’m less and less repulsed by my “old“ work-- like my December 2021 piece is STILL one of my favorites, and one I try to keep up with sorta. And yet, on the flipside, things I know I was proud of last year, two years ago, I’d do so much differently now. My idea of “good” art is different every year-- for a lot of the late teens I REALLY wanted to be an MCU concept artist so realism was what I strove for. But nowadays I’m really embracing simplification in ways I know I never could have before. I talked to my illustration professor about this, and he said something along the lines of, “It’s okay that it took you this long for it to click-- that’s why there’s four years of schooling.” I’m graduating in a few months and there’s still so much I don’t understand and I still feel a lot like the 12 year old using a mouse and GIMP/Paint.NET vector paths to draw. The nice part about still feeling like a kid, though, is that it’s still so much fun to do :)

2024 Art Summary

the end of this year caught up to me quick. it was a weird one, in both pleasant and unpleasant ways, but i feel like it's wrapped up to be an okay year

2024 celebrates the 10th anniversary of me doing these art summaries. looking back at them, it's interesting to see just how much has changed: the art i chose to present, how much i was able to present, the quality of the art i presented, how my style and skills have changed over time, and also... seeing how i've acted over time and changed as a person

i'm really glad that i started doing this in 2015, initially because i was beginning to feel really proud of the work i was doing and the growth i was having. the last few years haven't felt like that as much, feeling like many months were filled with scraps at the bottom of the barrel. but there were still moments to be proud of, and i think it goes to show that, no matter what happens in my life, my art will always persist. i may have some dry months because too much is happening to finish anything, but that's just life! it's nothing to be ashamed of

all that being said, i did surprisingly well this year, through all its ups and downs. without any further ado, here's what i've got to share for this year. if you'd like to see my previous summaries over the past decade, just check my #art summary tag. thanks for tagging along

starting off this year with some sketches! most of the stuff from january was either Still In The Works or weren't related to illustration. we'll be seeing a lot of that this year, since i poured some of my time into other forms of media creation as well

this is basically part 2 of the tailend of last year, continuing to get comfortable with my Genshin OC Jack, and brainstorming some more about vtuber stuff. in the interim, i worked really hard on another sequel piece which i completed much later (most of it was done in this month), and i discovered a new way to make music!

following the death of flash player, i couldn't use Musicshake anymore, a browser program i used to piece instrument samples and chord progressions together to make some really cool compositions. but then, one of my favorite music youtubers shouted out a different browser-based program called Splice, which does a similar thing except all of the samples are credited! all of the samples in the site's database are available to be used however you want, so it was a really fun new way to make some music for fun! i made 4 tracks this month, only half of which i really like. i might share them publicly at some point - i've so far only shared them on discord with a few close friends

february was a surprisingly busy month for my art, considering how stressed i remember being in gearing up for the coming month (for reasons i'll elaborate on later). did some more stuff with Jack, and in similar Genshin news, i... got really into CynoxTighnari for some reason. i always liked them, but never had the idea or drive to do anything with them myself... until february began. literally, like the 1st hit me like a truck idk. i primarily wrote my 18+ fanfic of them, which was supposed to be a simple one-shot that spiraled into a more intense character exploration. and then i drew a little bit for it. the one time i draw genshin fanart and it's for that jlhnjklkn

also included here is me drawing one of my friend's favorite OCs Oriole, since they were on a kick with him for a while. i decided to join in on the fun, since i helped design him in the first place, and drew his most recent design. i don't normally draw men so. Broad. so it was fun

also also Shelby/Cake got me into project sekai and i immediately latched onto all of the boys because I Am Predictable and Gay

mkay so this month was rather slim, because i was occupied by much more important things for pretty much the entirety of the month i went cross-country from New Mexico to Alabama to pick up Shelby and many of her belongings since she was gonna be moving in with me. our partner Stacey came to help as well, riding in Shelby's car with more of her stuff. as we were heading on our way out, Shelby's car crashed just before we went on the interstate. thankfully, neither she nor Stacey were hurt much beyond some soreness and a couple scrapes, and most of the items inside were intact, but her car was totaled. they crammed themselves into my car and we hunkered down in a hotel for a couple days, before getting a rental car for them to drive back in. we basically had to call it quits until Shelby got a new car. i was forced to take Stacey back home with me, since she had her flight back home in ABQ, and leave Shelby until later.

so uh. yeah. in the meantime, we talked a bit about our collective original story Cosmic Legacy and i doodled our guys a little. and once i had to get back to work, i did a few TOME sketches, and i gotta say that i like how they came out a lot

april wasn't much better, honestly, since that was when Stacey was leaving, and i was incredibly stressed about multiple life things at that point. one of the last things we did was draw together, and i used her markers to make a silly miku graphic, trying to be in a similar vein to her graffiti work on @wolf-of-clubs

after Stacey left, i spent a large chunk of my time escaping reality by playing a really interesting game called Chants of Sennaar. it's a puzzle game revolving primarily around translating multiple fictional languages, and it was a good thing to keep my brain from shutting down. i doodled myself as the faceless main character, to find some fun in my time there

a more interesting and lighthearted art thing i started this month was coloring in this "Manga Furries Coloring" book i got at the bookstore! normally those kinds of books are silly and kinda cheap - and it is - but this one had some really charming designs in it that i thought would be fun to do every so often. and i decided to exclusively use markers to color in it, something i'd never really used before! it took the first couple drawings to figure out the technique, but soon enough i was having a good time and doing really well with it, and even to this day i still crack it open if i'm feeling bored but artsy. it's nice and relaxing to do while listening to something in the background

also, this month i felt like making some nightcore remixes, and i got a request to nightcore a cover of a song, neither of which i knew beforehand, but i keep going back to listen to the result - it was really fun to make!

i was actually kind of surprised i had nothing to show but this lol

Shelby actually moved in with me at the beginning of May! woohoo! i think i ended up just spending a lot of my time getting used to having her around and helping her get settled, while she also helped me get out and explore the area more than i ever had lol

this piece here is actually a result of her: we started watching Case Study of Vanitas together (i still need to get to S2), and there was a particular scene that gave Major Vibes similar to a character of ours, that being the one here named Mercutio, who i've shown in summaries before but haven't properly done on tungle cuz... we like to keep Cosmic Legacy stuff hush-hush for some reason bjklkhl but yeah, i love how this turned out! it was fun to do a full cinematic-looking piece after the digital drought the last couple months

another relatively chill month, mostly trying to get back into the swing of things, and catch up on some projects, the first of which involves the many identical pictures of Kaeya Genshin Impact here. i'd been meaning to do a video essay on the state of the Genshin Webtoon manga pretty much since 2021, and i have made incremental progress up until this year where i finally read all of the manga and made substantial notes on it. one of my talking points will be on the art and specifically the coloring of the comic, so i made some mock-ups of other potential coloring choices for it

the second project is related indirectly to the other image; ever since Shelby got me into project sekai back in february, we had been working on a collection of translations of songs from the game to cover together! now that we were in the same place, we had a better way to give feedback, so we worked a lot on that! i specifically wanted to draw one of the characters, Rui, because i love him so very much in every way. he's an incredibly charming and relatable character and he's a whole lot of fun, so i tried to do his likeness justice

ARTFIGHT TIMEEEEEEEEE YEAH BABEY

i had. a lot of fun doing artfight this year. with some caveats i got more polished art done this year than the previous two years i'd participated, and... that was really only due to the fact i was injured pretty badly i ended up going to the hospital after two months of wavering back and leg pain that got so bad to the point i couldn't sleep more than a couple hours a night for a solid week and i could barely deal with work for more than an hour or two. turned out, i had a herniated disc, and that compression was what was causing me such disgusting pain. i spent some time away from work while i figured out what to do with the doctors, and in that time i did most of my artfight work. if i didn't have artfight to keep me company, idk what i would've done during that time

as to not interject with it more in the next few months, i'm pretty much fine now! after lots of medication and some physical therapy with a group of wonderful people, i'm all but back to normal, save for some tight muscles in the area that still needs some relaxing

another thing i spent some of my off-time on was the beginning of something great: the Boyfriends Webtoon comic dubs! Shelby and I went to the bookstore one day on a whim, just at the tailend of Pride Month, and they had two volumes of the comic in their pride section. i'd heard of the comic before and seen bits n pieces of it, so i thought i'd give it a go and bought them

it was on that day that my life changed forever.

i was immediately so enamoured with everything about it, and that's what made me start dubbing the comic only like a week after getting into it, even making my first couple back to back because i was just so excited! that was another thing that really kept me going this month

not much got done this month, i kept working on Boyfriends comic dubs and had to do a little bit of my own art for it for the sake of a better narrative flow, and it was really fun and interesting to try and emulate the style!

i got really hooked all of a sudden on this song called BUTCHER VANITY, and i liked it so much i wanted to draw my sona in the outfit of the character in the video bc it was a nice look and very cool vibes

and a lil doodle for my partner. cuz it was our 3rd anniversary :3

it was during this month that i had been contemplating Quitting My Job, because despite all my negotiations for making recovery from my injury easier like sitting in a chair or not lifting heavy objects, i was still forced into doing things that aggravated my injury so i could not recover from it. most of my time was spent being exhausted from that plus physical therapy twice a week, except for one day near the end where i doodled all of these funny little pokies i left as gracefully as i could, right before the last couple days of september, because despite it all i did like my job and the people there, and i didn't want to sour relations if they'd be called up as a reference in the future

anyway, the lil me in the corner is a cameo i made in Shelby's High Guardian Spice video bc she wanted my opinion as a Transgender(tm) about the trans rep in that show, and also from the perspective of someone who knew nothing about it it was good :3

it's time once again to try an october drawing challenge and Not Complete It wahey

i wanted to do cringetober last year too, but considering the fact i had Just moved in to my new place less than a week prior, i decided against it. but this year, i didn't have a job anymore so i had all the time in the world to work on art stuff! they said, naively in all honesty, even though i gave myself a headstart, i got hella burned out Fast on this. i think i just was being too ambitious, not to mention there were some prompts i didn't really know what to do with, so it ended up falling apart after like a week. but what i did manage to do was really fun! i'm particularly proud of the "dead meme" prompt submission i did where i remade Powerthirst with a modern meme sensibility, and you will watch it please i spent like two or three days straight on it

also the other characters here i teased initially in this post from july, aka second pride aka yaoi month i was very influenced by both Boyfriends and the other series i got into at the bookstore called Sasaki and Miyano, and my brain was craving more, so i went and made my own these two are the main, and really only, characters of my new original story Life Changed Suddenly: Lowell and Rowan, respectively. nearly every night for like two months straight, i would write snippets of character interaction and ideas and concepts about them, and now i'm seriously thinking about potentially publishing it as a light novel in the future. it's a story that's incredibly personal, drawing heavily from my experiences and making something that speaks to a very different experience than most people would be used to seeing, and i think that would be really valuable

but most importantly, i just wanted my own gay boys to project my feelings on, and make one of them my own personal gag manga character

oh hey look who it is, everybody, it's Siffrin In Stars and Time

soooooo Shelby, Stacey and I played through this game for the first time back innnnn September, i think? we livestreamed it every weekend for a while, and it quickly became our collective brainworm from then on, especially once we finished the game i fell Hard, and ended up drawing all of the guys and started writing fic again for it, but here i have simply given my variety of siffrins so far. because they're perfect. i love him

also. more boyfriends dubs happened. these were fun

HEY, REMEMBER THAT THING I SAID I WAS WORKING ON FOR THE MOST PART OF JANUARY? YOU'LL NEVER BELIEVE that's right, i DID do a second color wheel, and i DID finish it only a few days before the end of the year after not touching it since the end of january because that is Normal and Fine i am genuinely very proud of the work i did... back in january bhkjbj the only characters i hadn't done yet were the purple and pink ones, and i'll be real i coulda done better on them both but y'know what they're still really damn good and i Should be proud of em

separately, i also stopped procrastinating something i had planned since like october - a lil gift art of Fafnir Volos, a vtuber who does cool video essay stuff, who'd paid us an impromptu visit when we were streaming In Stars and Time, and then we connected and became buds! well, he and Shelby became buds, mostly, but i joined in and we vibed hard, it was nice i thought his avatar was already super cool, so i drew him! he's a cool guy, go check him out :3

aaaand that is a wrap on 2024! wild to say that again, looking back on the past 10 years of these summaries was really crazy, just to see how my life had changed as well as my art. i thought i would have had more time to draw after college, but honestly my college years were some of my most active, and ever since 2020 it's been on the decline... but i don't think that's entirely true a lot of those old summaries? that was all i had for that month. or it was just a piece of a group of related things i did, but it was still those one or two things and that was It. i still have to do that, sometimes, but in the last few years, more often than not, i have to pick and choose what i present for these. the main difference, i can observe, is that i have done a lot more sketches and doodles rather than polished digital or traditional pieces. maybe it's because i have less time to dedicate to them, or it's because i find sketching traditionally to be a lot easier to get out than doing it digitally. either way, the numbers really shouldn't matter. like i said at the top, no matter what life throws at me, my art will still persist. and i hope to continue my work far into the future. i'll keep making these summaries, and keep surprising myself with how much i was actually able to accomplish throughout the year

Fall back in love with the world that destroyed you

So this year I decided I wanted to do at least 1 full-color drawing a month so I could actually do one of these at the end of the year. For the first time ever, I was drawing consistently, and the practice paid off! (I actually learned what a background is?? what???) I’ve got a lot more room to grow, but I’m happy with how far I’ve come!

this au is very heavily inspired from the 1991 movie, 2017 movie, and the musical, some things will seem similar and at times different, some parts of dialogue will be familiar, however it's for the sake of the plot. to summarize, this is basically a retelling of the story. I hope you guys enjoy!!

Chapter 1 : The Village

In a small province, east of the castle, there was a small village called Arachna,

This village is quite unique on its own as there are many people of different personalities, Men go to work and get an education and the women stay at home to learn how to be housewives and tend for children. Reading was considered wrong for women to read…Men didn’t want them to develop ideas or think for themselves and only solely focus on the children… However…At the edge of the village, at a small house lived an old inventor, he knew how to fix clocks, create music boxes, and most importantly invent. He would slave the day away just tinkering and figuring out new ideas on how to make life more comfortable and convenient, he proposed his ideas constantly to the villagers to help them make their lives a bit easier, but alas…the villagers called him a loon and demented for frivolous ideas. He would go home dejected, but his greatest pride and most precious invention would be at home; Y/N…

He had raised y/n all on his own after his wife passed away when y/n was 5. To his precious daughter, He promised himself that he wouldn’t shun her from her curiosity and instead showed her all there is to know. Y/N learned how to read, write, speak, analyze, and even sing a little, all due to her father’s promise that he made to her dying mother and to his daughter. Eventually, Y/N grew to be a lovely and beautiful woman. She’s kind, compassionate, loving, and even imaginative. She even has a huge affinity for reading and especially having a bit of a collection of books at home. 

You may wonder, what is Y/N’s life like at her village

well it goes a bit like this…

A rooster crows in the distance, as the sun rises, signifying the day to begin..

Y/N has woken up and looked at her book beside her bedside table and smiles “well now...time to return this to the bookstore” she says softly to herself. She opens her curtains and opens the window, smelling the morning dew from the fresh air. Y/N gets dressed in her favorite blue dress, tying her hair in a low ponytail with a ribbon and walks downstairs to cook some breakfast for herself before leaving. She puts her book in a little basket and walks out and heads for the village. “Any moment now…before I hear-” she gets interrupted by the waking village “BUENOS DIAS MI GENTE” 

Y/N rolls her eyes as she sees the empty streets quickly fill up with people with errands and work to do. She smells fresh wheat from the bakery, and she smiles as she thinks how the baker always sells his bread right on time. “Ah, Buenos Dias Y/N” the baker says. “Oh Buenos Dias, señor”, The Baker looks at her and smiles and asks, “where are you off to?” Y/N smiling and excited to tell him says “Oh I’m going to the bookstore! I just finished reading this amazing story about an ogre, a donkey, and a cursed princess-” she gets interrupted “oh that’s nice. OYE MARIA, LOS BOLILLOS” he ends up yelling to his wife in the bakery. Y/N shrugs and moves along her day.

The villagers see her and start whispering amongst themselves, they gossiped about how she would always read, always having her nose stuck in a book.However, they could all mutually agree that despite her odd personality, she’s truly a sight for sore eyes, a truly beautiful woman who sadly knows how to think. 

Y/N arrives at the bookstore and opens the door, the bell on top of the door chiming, announcing her arrival. “Buenos Días señor ! vine a devolver el libro que me prestaron” she says handing the book back to the salesclerk with much care. The salesclerk laughs “ Already? Y/N my dear, it's only been since yesterday.” Y/N who was already on the ladder searching for another book looked down at him sheepishly “yea, well I couldn’t exactly put it down…” Her hand lands on a familiar blue book, she pulls it out of the bookshelf and hands it to the salesclerk “I’ll borrow this one !” The salesclerk looks at the title of the book and shakes his head, amused by her antics “you’ve read this book almost 2 times already, are you sure you want this book again ?” he says, while helping Y/N down the ladder. “Well I can’t help it, faraway places, tense sword fights, magic spells, and a prince in disguise” 

The salesclerk chuckles and hands her the book “well if you like it so much it’s yours...” Y/N holds the book in her hands in excitement “I-I… are you sure?” she asks hesitantly. “I insist, please take it” he tells her. “Well then thank you, thank you so much!” Y/N leaves the bookstore happily, immediately opening to the first page.

While Y/N is in the distance walking with her new book, next to a tavern there is a strong, tall, blone, handsome brute of a man, checking himself out in the mirror, making sure that his looks are impeccable. “BEN! I caught your uhh…whatever this bird is, oh and some girls told me to tell you you’re an amazing hunter” says a shorter looking pudgy man to him.

“Why thank you Eddie for reminding me how perfect I am,” Ben says. Eddie nods as he pretends to agree with his own statement. “I bet that not even a beast or girl can handle you,” he says, feeding the man’s ego. Ben looks down at Eddie and grins “oh and that’s true as well, but my next hunt is that one over there” he says pointing at Y/N. Eddie looks at him a bit appalled and says, “the inventor’s daughter?” Ben then inhales and goes on a tangent “Why yes, Eddie…she’s the one I’m going to marry, the most beautiful girl in town. As soon as I met her, I knew that I have to make her my wife, a handsome man like me and a gorgeous woman like her are meant to be together” Eddie agrees with him reluctantly as he sees Venom speed walk to catch up with her.

Ben goes through a bustling market in order to reach Y/N who is easing her way through the crowd despite reading a book. “Please let me through” he said exasperated, not wanting to let Y/N out of his sight. Eventually he does finally reach her by climbing the roof of a house and landing right on his feet like the man he is. “Hello, Y/N” he says as his eyes scan her from head to toe. “Hola, Ben” she says in response while still focusing on her book. ben then smirks and quickly takes the book away from her hands to get her attention. 

“Ben, por favor give back my book” she says politely. Ben ignores her by butting in her way and flipping the pages in the book “How do you read this… there’s no pictures…” 

“Well if you read books then you would know that some people have something called an imagination” 

Ben looks at her and throws the book somewhere as he tries to charm her “well Y/N, I believe it's finally time for you to stop reading books and pay attention to more…attractive things, like me” he says. “The whole town talks about it. It’s not proper for women to read...besides women thinking means they develop ideas and start assuming things” he says with a bit of a grimace on his face. 

“Ay, Ben you’re so antediluvian.”

Y/N then reaches down to pick up her book and wipes the dirt off with a handkerchief. She turns around to keep on going back home but is stopped by Ben yet again as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder, mentioning how she should join him at the tavern so that they could talk and bond. “Oh, but I can't. I have to go help my father, goodbye now” she says, as she walks away as fast as her feet can take her away from the brainless man.

A few minutes later after speed walking, Y/N sees smoke coming out of the basement and rushes there quickly. “PAPA!” She opens the basement door to let out the smoke and searches for her father “ay papa, que paso? estas bien?” she asks as she helps him get up from the floor “Ay Hijita, I'm fine... I just can’t get this piece of metal to start working” Y/N chuckles and kisses her father’s forehead “papa you always say that when you’re frustrated… Besides, if you get this to work… you can finally go to the contest and win that prize you’ve always wanted.”

Her father thinks for a while and nods “ you’re right…i shouldn’t give up, i’ll get a patent on this and i’ll finally be Mauricio, the greatest inventor ever seen!” Y/N smiles and hugs her father before leaving to let him finish his invention. “Oh right, papa did you…” she looks at him with a knowing look “yes I did mijita, it's upstairs at the kitchen table.” Y/N nods and dashes up inside the house and speeds to the kitchen. She stops when she looks at the table and smiles fondly. It was her mother’s old music box…now fixed after so many years…

Y/N sits by the table and winds up the music box and hums along to the melody being played remembering the lullaby her father used to sing to her before going to sleep as a child. She then looks up and sees her father smiling at her, enjoying the melody as well. “Papa…do you think i'm..odd ?” she says softly to him. Her father raises an eyebrow and sits beside her “y a donde sacaste eso??”

“People talk papa…” she says looking to the side. “Solecito…they talk about me too, we’re not odd at all…” He brings his hand to her shoulder to console her “you’re my daughter…and you’re mother’s daughter as well, They’re the common people and you…you’re unique Hija. No matter what you do I’m always on your side ok?” Y/N smiles and chuckles “are you sure that’s just not you being biased?” Her father laughs and shrugs “Maybe…maybe not…don’t ever change who you are, ok?” Y/N smiles and nods “ok papa” A few days later, Y/N’s father was finished with his invention and had prepared the wagon, placing some food, medicine, horse fodder, and his invention all neatly placed inside the wagon. As he adds the saddle onto Felipe’s back, placing the reins properly on the horse’s side. He then looks at Y/N and smiles “Hijita…what do you wish for me to bring back for you? Shall it be jewelry, or dresses, or new perfumes?” Y/N thinks for a minute and says, “A rose, like the one mama had embroidered on her dress” He chuckles “But, you ask for that every year. Y/N smiles as she looks at her father “and yet every year you’ll bring it...” “Fine then, you’ll have my word, adios por ahora y/n” he says as he gently caresses his daughter’s cheek. “Adios Papa...” Y/N would watch her father ride up the hill into the distance.

“How do I know if it's on?” the voice was quiet as the focus of the video pointed down revealing shredded wrapping paper and an open box.

“Salmon” The camera shook before it pointed up at Y/N

“OH! It's on” She smiled at the boy behind the camera

 “Heyyy vlog it's your favorite y/nn” She took the camera from his hands and lifted it showing the mess of Christmas wrapping

“My super BFF Toge Inumaki got me this camera everybody say thank you Toge” She wiggled the camera up close to his face as he scrunched his nose.

“Welcome back vlog” she whispered to the camera lens before moving the camera back swiftly 

“I am here with my co-host Inumaki and we are on the train going on a mission,” she said moving around in her seat to lay over into his lap blocking whatever game he was playing pointing the camera up at him at a very unflattering angle as he looked down

“Bonito flakes” he sighed as he looked down at her

“That's what I'm saying” she agreed laughing turning the camera to face herself before it fell cutting the recording short

The camera was getting rustled around before it settled on her desk

“Um… do my makeup with me as my best friend is on a life-threatening mission while I have to stay back at the school” She gave the camera a small weak smile

“It's not like he's alone like our other friends are there but” she paused as she sighed

“He isn't  answering his text and I'm worried more because it's just different cause it Inumaki-not saying I don't care about our friends I love them to bits just” Her brows knotted as she looked down through the bag on her lap rambling 

“It's just different between me and Toge it's more comfortable- whatever this is stupid” She snatched the camera rolling her eyes before it turned off

“It's almost midnight vlog” she giggled on the bed moving the camera to sit on pillows

“Are we gonna kiss tonight?” she joked nudging Toge with a smile as a blush crept up to decorate the tips of his ears

“Salmon roe” Toge shoved her back rolling his eyes before typing on his phone to show her

“Why would I kiss you you smell horrible” she fakes reading out with a gasp from his phone as he sat up shaking his head making an X with his arms

She looked up at the camera “he hates me guys my own best friend” she sighed looking down dramatically 

“Tuna mayo!” he groaned pouting at her pushing her shoulder again causing her to laugh and grab the camera 

 “stay tuned to find out if we actually kiss” she stuck her tounge out as she started to move the camera closer to Toge’s fake before he opened his mouth the camera cut

 “Now we must be careful not to disturb the beast” She leaned the camera closer to his face before his eye peeked open and she gasped

“You're not even sleeping you're a faker!” she laughed as he smiled as it look like he charged at the camera before the recording abruptly ended

August 21st, 2018

The screen is covered with a sliver of the room being shown as a frustrated groan is heard at a distance 

“Like did you ever consider how I would feel? I get you and Yuuta are close and stuff but it doesn't mean ditch me to go and make the same plans with Yuuta” Y/n voice strained as she reprimanded him

“Fish flakes!” Toge’s voice sounded desperate 

“Put the phone down can you do that for once? Just listen to me! For someone who can't speak right you sure are a bad listener,” y/n yelled harshly “Wait no comeback” 

Toge pauses for a second before even considering what y/n just said to him her. Once he does he just stares at her with only a look that can be described as heartbreak before turning and walking out with a harsh slam of the door followed by y/n groans before everything where the camera sat was pushed causing the recording to stop.

Present

She paused and grimaced after watching the last video 

“I should probably delete that right?” she turned to him as there was still no reply from his part

“I didn't mean it you know” her words getting caught in her throat as her voice trembled “You don't have to fake no more Toge get up” She went to go grab his hand but she was only met with the empty bed space that was once occupied by his hand 

“Please wake up we can't just end as best friends I don't want to end just as best friends” She began to sob as she laid on top of his lap as his body rested in the infirmary bed her tears made the room go blurry as they clouded her vision as she poured her heart out in his lap. She moved her arms to wrap around her head blocking out the world. Blocking out the small smile that danced across Toge’s lips

"Why won't Venezuelans just address the blockade?"

If you're wondering why, read below.

Let me start by saying that I wrote this after I finished work, with less than three hours of sleep and a single meal in my body, so if you find any grammar mistakes, my apologies.

This is the comment that kickstarted this post. I believe I've mentioned this before, but when you're living in a country that weaponizes propaganda and hijacks every single media outlet, you have to master the fine arts of fact checking and cross-referencing. Which is exactly what we're going to do right now, addressing the claim that 40,000 Venezuelans have been killed by the US sanctions, and why We Won't Engage with You In This Particular Argument.

In the paper Economic Sanctions as Collective Punishment: The Case of Venezuela by Mark Weisbrot and Jeffrey Sachs (who will be referred to as WS in this post), WS mention that between the years of 2017-2019, the economic sanctions caused a 31% increase in the general mortality rate in Venezuela, a number that they calculate may be of about 40,000 deaths. While they cite ENCOVI and a UN report from 2019 as the sources of this statistic, they clarify the following in the footnotes:

The ENCOVI 2018 survey has not been made public, the mortality statistic cited here is from the UN Report (2019).

As of this date, WS has not made public the data source for this estimate, and the UN report used as a source (Venezuela: Overview of Priority Humanitarian Needs, March 2019) is not publicly available.

So let's take a look at some sources that ARE publicly available.

The World Bank Group World Development Indicators registers at least a 30% increase in the infant mortality rate in Venezuela from the dates of 2013 to 2016. Similar numbers are reported in this paper, seeing a 40% increase in the infant mortality rate in Venezuela between the dates on 2008-2016. Here's an excerpt from the paper Impact of the 2017 Sanctions on Venezuela:

While different than other overall mortality rates, increases in infant mortality rates are generally interpretable as a preventable consequence of inadequate pre- and post-natal care for otherwise healthy but vulnerable infants. Thus, infant mortality is often recognized as a good proxy measure of the quality on overall public health provision.

What this tells us is that THERE HAS BEEN an increase in general mortality rate - one that started long before the 2017 sanctions.

However, this doesn't mean that in the periods of 2017-2019 there wasn't a high death toll. Let's look at another publicly available source.

The National Hospital Survey (2019) found that between November 2018 and February 2019, 1557 people died owing to the lack of supplies in hospitals [...]. 40 patients died as a result of the power outages in March 2019.

We see the first mention of a number in the 2019 Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Something interesting this report mentions is that 40 deaths were caused by the blackout in March 2019. A blackout that lasted 7 days and affected our 23 states.

The energy crisis which caused this nationwide blackout started in 2010. The Wikipedia article is a good summary, if a bit simple, of the events that led to and took place during and after the energy crisis (which affects us Venezuelans living in the country to this day)

Back to the UN Report. Something else this report indicates is the following:

In 2018, the Government registered 5,287 such killings, while the non-governmental organization Observatorio Venezolano de la Violencia reported at least 7,523 killings under this category. Between 1 January and 19 May 2019, the Government reported 1,569 killings for resistance to authority. The Observatorio Venezolano de la Violencia reported at least 2,124 such killings between January and May 2019. Information analysed by OHCHR suggests many of these killings may constitute extrajudicial executions.

[...] Six young men executed by the Special Action Forces (SEBIN) in reprisal for their role in anti-government protests in 2019.

This means that between the dates of 2018-2019, there have been approximately 9,647 deaths in the context of security operations - which includes Venezuelans that took part of the protests in 2019. Very similar to what we have been reporting since after the elections in July 28.

2017 to 2019 was one of the most difficult periods in Venezuelan history, marked by the sanctions imposed by Trump which affected oil export, access to diesel, and food and medicine imports. Some people argue that the economic recession in Venezuela was caused by the sanctions - failing to notice the negative trends in the years prior to these.

Bahar, Bustos, Morales and Santos (who will be referred to as BBMS in this post) conclude in their paper, Impact of the 2017 Sanctions on Venezuela, that while the sanctions had a negative effect in the oil production, "it is quite impossible to attribute the fall [...] to one single event (i.e., the sanctions), when many other confounding events were happening at the same time."

Oil production: Oil prices dropped during 2015, and oil production decreased as a result of lack of maintenance and investment.

Energy crisis: By 2009, when the energy crisis was first declared, the electrical grid had already been suffering from the lack of maintenance and investment since 1998. The Chávez administration distributed million dollar contracts [...] that enriched high officials of his government and the works were never built. [1] [2] [3]

Economic decline and hyper-inflation: Actions taken by the Chávez administration such as expropriation and price control, as well as the PDVSA purge in 2002 led the country to depend almost entirely on its already declining oil industry, causing shortages and price rises in common goods, food, medical supplies and so on. By 2015, 60% of the Venezuelan population was living in poverty. [1] [2] [3] [4]

From only these three points, we can establish a negative trend starting way before the first US Sanctions. Thus, we can conclude that by the time the devastating 2017-2019 sanctions took place, Venezuela was already deep in a state of generalized crisis.

WS conclude in their paper:

[...] One of the most important impacts of the sanctions is to lock Venezuela into a downward economic spiral. [...] An economic recovery could have already begun in the absence of economic sanctions.

While Bahar, Bustos, Morales and Santos declare:

[...] Our analysis finds insufficient evidence to conclude that they [sanctions] were responsible for the worsening of the socio-economic crisis. [...] The weight of evidence seems to indicate that, rather than being a result of US-imposed sanctions, much of the suffering and devastation in Venezuela has been, in line with most accounts, inflicted by those in power.

In conclusion - both papers seem to agree that the crisis in Venezuela started before 2017, but where WS claim that it worsened due to US sanctions, BBMS place a higher blame on the deterioration caused by the Venezuelan government.

Now, you may keep whichever analysis you prefer, but one thing we know for sure: the 40,000 Venezuelans that WS claimed died due to the sanctions cannot be found in any public report, while the death toll of protests and extrajudicial killings has been extensively reported.

Why is this relevant?

Contrary to what some people on this site would say, Venezuelans generally agree on the negative impacts of US-imposed sanctions (note: this poll accounts only for Venezuelans in Florida, as polls aren't often published inside Venezuela). However, the general consensus is that US-sanctions only added up to a crisis that had been building up since Chávez rose to power, and rather than the cause, it was yet another symptom.

Yes, the US is the Big Bad, but placing the blame solely on the sanctions only takes the responsibility away from the government and diverts the attention from the poor governance, rampaging corruption, violent repression and denialism that we've grown used to in the last 25 years.

So if you ask "why don't you address the blockade?", my response is: why don't you address the 9,647 extrajudicial killings, the 40 deaths caused by the energy crisis, the energy crisis itself, the economic decline, the lack of maintenance in the infrastructure, the violent repression, the forceful abductions and the censoring?

What we want you to understand is that when you center the US as the cause of the crisis, you are actively participating in our state-funded propaganda and knowingly turning a blind eye on the suffering of all Venezuelans. You are no better than imperialists - you ARE participating in imperialism.

Last, but not least - be careful with your sources. This Venezuelanalysis article was written by Andreína Chávez, former editor-in-chief of TeleSUR, a government-funded news channel known for spreading Maduro propaganda. One of their most recent claims: dead Venezuelans are shown as having voted in the ballots shown in resultadosconvenezuela.com. Needless to say, this is false. This news portal is what some people would call, BIASED.

But in this case, because the walls of tumblr keep us safe from his home platforms of reddit/tiktok/youtube, everyone believes this guy invented Goncharov and keep telling him how creative he is, and documenting his “lore” WITHOUT EVER FINDING THE 2017 90k NOTE TUMBLR POST WITH DOZENS OF PIECES OF ART THAT HE GOT THE IDEA FROM.

Does taking an idea from 2017 tumblr really take you this far? Oh my god
