Tokyo Revengers plot circles around Bōsōzoku subculture, which is why I love it as deeply as I do.

Bōsōzoku culture derives/d from lower class Japanese youth who’ve banded together to express dissatisfaction with Japanese Society.

America is very familiar with countercultural movements lmao. Punk/Grunge/Metal/etc…

Youth are aimless, reckless, and rebellious.

If you’ve ever enjoyed the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton , you know this is a prime example of brotherhood bonds between lower class hoodlums. In Oklahoma, of all places.

Otherwise known as; Yankii, Sukeban, Kyushakai.

This article is really awesome in explaining cultural differences, feel free to read up on some if you’re interested.

Today I plan to point out a few:

Yankii Mothers / YanMaMa; Ryoko Baji

early ’90s, yankii men occasionally entered construction and teen women had children and dropped out of high school — both stereotypes that persist today. *The young yankii mothers — yan mama — were often ostracized by other mother groups and struggled to assimilate to their new identities as parents.

Within a year of publication, Yan Mama Comic had reached of circulation of 120,000, helping to bond socially isolated communities of young mothers.

NO DOUBT ABOUT IT FOLKS; Ryoko and Baji’sDad were definitely two yankii teens who fell in love and had a kid too young.

Headcanon! That Keisuke’s parents were set on making a badass life together, and be awesome young parents with the coolest and toughest new punk kid to add to the books!

…But, they were still two idiots. Baji’s father probably ran head first, sacrificing himself in one way or another, I’m sure.

This leads you to wonder ~..

Mikey: all younger siblings admire their older brothers! Shinichiro was the leader of a biker gang, of course Mikey would want to follow in his footsteps! So Mikey’s reason soon turns to::

Shinichiro: By being a overall stand up guy, true to his word and genuine to a fault, he had a strength not a lot of people had. He welcomed friendships with BlackSheep, and made a home for them however he could. Strong ally’s stood by him and as long as he’s around, they would support his ideals in shaping a better future.

Draken: was literally born into it. Escorts have been judged and poorly treated left and right, taking care of yourself—with a child to boot; was hell for a women. Unwanted kids of “filth” aren’t usually welcomed in social circles. The Children bare the injustice of inconvenience. By living with escorts and witnessing first hand the “low-class work” so many have had to endure to make a decent way of life, Draken learned young that life was unfair. So to live, you have to make a way of life for yourself, unapologeticly.

Mitsuya: Poor kids are looked down on a lot. Made fun of for things they can’t control. Kids with jobs are looked down on for being in the working class so soon. With a mother who was never home, and taking care of two younger sisters, he needed strength to deal with how unfair his life was. Meeting Draken, and realizing that the struggle to survive and keep trying to have a family even when it’s hard, he started respecting his mother a lot more. He found a sense of belonging Toman…

Baji: also literally born into it. Grew up with a single mother who was looked down on for being young/dropping out of school. Supporting her as the only Man of the house, Keisuke takes after his mother’s confidence. He also is seen having an alternative sense of fashion, making me believe he is definitely a metal head.

Kazutora: dealt with a lot growing up. He was bullied for being a sheepish pushover. He was hit by his father for any level of individuality /expression of defiance. He was manipulated into always having to pick one right side, and that there was always one wrong side. He tries showing loyalty by giving everything he has to friendships that hurt him, without realizing friends shouldn’t hurt him. No matter who he was, there was never anyone he could just be a person with. Be a part of the perfect high status family you were born into, or face the punishments. He finds comfort when he finds a family he can trust and be a person who makes mistakes. Friends are meant to be treasured. And after meeting Baji, and joining Toman, he found somewhere he could belong.

Pah: I still need to look more into him I can’t lie.

Takemichi: Bozosoku culture is notorious for being social justice fighters, as the entire notion of a subculture is to defy societal injustice anyway. And that’s just who Takemitchi is; a friend to everyone.

Hinata: the prime example of Dating into the lifestyle. It’s easy to admire and possibly fall in love with people as passionate as rebellious, adrenaline junky teens. She’s empathetic to how others see Takemichi, knowing above all else, he loves her more than anything!

Emma: she never really got into being a part of the gang, but she was by association. All of her brothers. She’s always been the crown jewel of TokyoManji! But not only that; Emma isn’t fully Japanese. True, a lot of the cast is multinationality. But she has Mikey on her side. She is his family, and that makes her strong. Foreigners are often ostracized, easy to pick out due to her natural Blonde hair. (*blonde hair is also often an act of rebellion, she showing that she refuses to dye it black to fit in can also say a little about other issues-)

LETS NOT FORGET!!! TOMAN IS BUILD ON THE BACK OF “The Little guy who sticks up for the Weak”.

The series is based on what kind of world Manjiro Sano chooses to build. Every timeline is unintentionally set by his hand, because he is that powerful of a person. Because people follow him. Manjiro is the type of person who changes fates.

By losing Shinichiro; Manjiro loses Empathy.

Shinichiro was a charismatic and empathetic person, often putting differences aside to better the other person. He was a heavily respected person in the delinquent world of Japan as the founder of Black Dragon. He led Black Dragon with a humble heart and was treated with notable respect, while also being a big brother to all three of his siblings. Even though he was a weak fighter, he lead the Black Dragon with his immense charisma. Even years after his death, later generations of members still hold him in high regard.

A person like Shinichiro is the kind of man people follow. The Weak Guy sticking up for his friends; The One who Always Won..

In a subculture seeking structure, he is the perfect person to leading a generation of a kinder and more empathetic people.

J-Street Fashion Banners/Moodboards

Kogal Gyaru A street fashion very influenced by 80's - Y2k fashion in the west. This fashion involves bright tans, blonde hair, and doll-like eyes. This specific substyles of Gyaru is extremely common with teens in Japan as it allows them to wear Gyaru but still wear their uniforms. There are many more exaggerated form of Gyaru like Agejo, Tropical Gyaru, and Hime. This style is most commonly known for being the exact opposite to Japanese beauty standards at the time.

Sweet Lollita

A Japanese street fashion most commonly associated with Rococo and Victorian clothing. Its most well known for its very lacy and ruffled trims and extremely ornate patterns (usually ranging from sweets to cute animals). Also, please note that the fashion has no association with the novel of the same name and the same name is merely a coincidence. Other substyles of Lollita includes, from goth to punk to the very ornate Hime Lollita. This fashion style is all about the desexualization of femininity and appealing to your inner fancy princess.

Visual Kei Visual Kei or V-Kei is most well known for its music because of their association and similarities to western goth music. Visual Kei is actually referred to as a branch of the umbrella term "Goth" and its most popular influences are bands like Malice Mizer and Dadaroma. Visual Kei, like Gyaru, has seen a boom in popularity because of the comebacks of 2000's fashion and the acceptance of alternative styles. Visual Kei is most noticeable by the multiple black layers along side dramatic hairstyles and makeup. The most popular substyles of V-Kei are Eroguro-Kei, Tanbi Kei, and Angura Kei. This style is all about visual dramaticism, hence the name, and creative expression.

Decora-Kei

Decora fashion is most well known for its visually bright and very colored style. This style involves kid-like fashion but times ten. Most Decora wear extremely bright or bold colors and eye catching clothing and multiple accessories. Many Decora's describe themselves as "Straight out of a Lisa Frank coloring book" and they show that influence in their extremely bold and flashy style. Decora's generally wear bright tennis shoes or platforms with multiple pieces of jewelry and hairpieces. Common themes are kid's shows, hello kitty, and rainbows. This style is meant to appeal to appeal to your inner child and be as eye catching as possible.

Menhera (Trigger Warning for mentions of Self-harm, suicide, mental illness, and general gore themes.)

Menhera is mostly well known for its art work and media that slowly influenced into a fashion type. Menhera's are usually wear medical related things like bandages, pill themes, and paying a bit of homage to nurse or school girl uniforms. This style is usually colored with hot pinks, pastel colors, white, and lavender. The most noticeable part of this fashion is the implications of self-harm with bandages on the wrists and thighs and a boxcutter; this is seen a lot on a popular character named Menhera Chan. This style's purpose is to bring awareness to mental health and the importance of it because of Japan's high suicide rate.

Mori Kei

Mori Kei is a street fashion centered around cottage living and as if living in a forest. Mori Kei consists of blouses, green ruffled skirts, and general "nature-like" fashion. This style is most commonly associated with "Cottage-Core", which is a western subtype of this fashion as Mori Kei really took off in 2009 while Cottage-Core became popular in mostly the 2020's. Mori Kei focuses on naturality, like a lack of overly expressive makeup and more toned down clothing that less visually eye-catching but no less beautiful. Mori Kei is also centered around hobbies from sewing, to reading, to even photography.

Sukeban

A Japanese style that got incredibly popular in the 70's when a movement started to stop the overly strict school systems for women. Girls began to do the same as males, sitting "unladylike" and making ugly faces in pictures, and began to intimidate teachers. These women first began changing their uniforms, making them longer and wearing unauthorized accessories, as a form of protest. This style was very looked down upon and still is today because of its association with gangs and violence. However, this style has slowly but surely grown in popularity due to social media, manga, and a popular Japanese movie called Sukeban Deka. This style is centered around the empowerment of women and to fight back against social and gender norms.

Yanki!Sukuna thoughts...

Sukuna, who hated going home and fell into the "wrong" crowd in middle school. He hated his Mom, who looked right through him. He hated his Dad, who only cares about making his wife happy and was willing to overlook just about anything to make their marriage work.

Yanki!Sukuna... who's mean—he doesn't discriminate in his targets and it gets his ass beat.

Yanki!Sukuna... loves street racing motorcycles outside the suburbs. He lives for the wind whipping around his face and tearing at his clothes.

Yanki!Sukuna... 15 years old, skinny as a whip with bleached hair and is already rocking tattoos up his torso.

Yanki!Sukuna... is cocky and already has a small band of his own followers and tries to break away from the larger group he runs with.

It gets ugly. Like people in the hospital ugly. Like passing out from blood loss in his parent's living room ugly because he has nowhere else to go.

Yanki!Sukuna... who got in a vicious inter-gang fight a few weeks before high school started so his parents shipped him off to Sendai to live with his grandfather.

Yanki!Sukuna... who gets in screaming matches with that old bastard. But is always home for dinner.

Yanki!Sukuna... only goes to school so the old bastard will get off his back.

Yanki!Sukuna... distances himself from his classmates, they're annoying, judgmental, weak and no better than sheep. He snaps at anyone who approaches.

Yanki!Sukuna... who likes to pick fights with everyone until an upperclassman cold clocks him for going after a middle schooler.

"Gonna chill out now, new guy? Or do I need try again?" You crouch over him, ankle length skirt pooling next to his head.

"Eat shit!" He spits.

You grind the heel of your shoe into his hand with an apathetic snarl. "Wrong answer."

Yanki!Sukuna... can't fucking believe he got knocked out by a sukeban nobody like you.

Yanki!Sukuna... calls you out nearly everyday, and like clock work you put him on his ass.

You shake out your hand after a particularly hard hit. "Seriously, don't you have anything better to do?"

"Shut up and fight me, you bitch!"

He wakes up in his bed, head and cheek throbbing.

Yanki!Sukuna... stumbles into the kitchen for an ice pack and his grandfather is at the table sipping on tea.

"You never told me you had a girlfriend!" The old man gives him the side eye.

"HUH?! What the fuck are you talking about? You goin' senile old man?!"

"DON'T YELL AT ME, YOU BRAT! That girl who brought you home, if she's not your girlfriend then who the hell is she?!"

Yanki!Sukuna... never really thought about who you were but a night of contemplation later bring him to a conclusion.

The next morning at school, he waits for you by the gates as usual. But he doesn't pick a fight. Instead, he nods silently at you and goes to his classroom, hands stuffed into his pockets to try to hide the way his palms started sweating at the sight of you... His ears burn white hot whenever you focus your flat appraising gaze on him.

You shrug it off, sometimes it takes one hundred beatings to get the point across—now he'll stop picking fights every five minutes.

Unfortunately, it only took one hundred beatings for Sukuna to fall in love with a nobody sukeban from Sendai.

Toralei stripe character bio/redesign

Toralei Stripe (they/he/she)

Harimau Jaidan daughter of the Stripe family (Chinese Malaysian-British)

(Transforms on the full moon into a malayan tiger)

(Lesbian)

A bad tempered,mistrustful weretiger adopted by a wealthy family of cat Yokai living in Britain, Toraleis had it rough. Abandoned as a young child they've been cycled through the foster system more than they can think and feel detached from their foster mother Caterina Stripe and her standoffish family as a result,being inducted into monster high on caterina’s father's warning of it being a last chance for the girl before being shipped off to a reform school. Toralei personally express their own feelings regarding all of their baggage through playing loud punk music with his band,the Hissfits (consisting of toralei themself on vocals and guitar and their cousins purrsephone and meowlody on bass and drums) much to the dismay of the half of the campus able to hear it.

Likes: punk subculture and music, playing guitar in her band,drama ,taking catnaps (often in class) and dairy products.

Dislikes: crates and enclosed spaces,people trying to tell him how to live his life,being short (5’3),digital only media and his adoptive grandfather and family (bar purrsephone and meowlody, misfits gotta stick together after all)

Killer style: Toralei's mother always insisted on her dressing "properly" to fit in with her family's smart image,since joining monster high however toralei has been rejigging these old clothes into something more "her style", that being punky Sukeban-inspired looks bound to irk her mum's sensibilities.

Familiar: Sweetfangs, a huge orange tomcat that toralei befriended during her childhood as a street kitten,who bears a passing resemblance to a sabretooth tiger and hates everybody but toralei,who in return spoils him.

Pet Peeve: Their adoptive mother, Ms Stripe's insistence on their education being top-priority. Toralei just doesn't know why she even bothers. They've never done well in school,and no students or teachers either human or monster ever put much stock in them either. In a few years both will be out of each others lives anyway,reform school or not,so why even care?

Freaky Flaw: Their self loathing. To say toralei has issues is an understatement,and said issues have manifested into a frustratingly self defeating look on life. To toralei though it's just how it is,she's had to be on their own for most of their life and fight to get what she wants without anyone helping,planting the idea early that it was simply because he wasn't worth helping,and regardless of the changes in her life recently she expects it all to be the same at monster high. After all,if the people who insisted they were there to help never did anything for toralei,why shouldn't this be true for this new lot?

Spooky Secret: Toralei has a very pronounced West Country accent (having grown up in devon) that he masks for fear it makes him sound too “farmer-y” with a pseudo-cockney one, regardless it tends to slip in times of high emotion,including during when they sing,but the fact that they're attending an American school means few are the wiser.

Dream job: Rocking out on the underground punk circuit and touring around the British isles when they're done with school,despite her Foster mothers disapproval and insistence on studying. Although another,more personal reason for this dream lifestyle being that through it toralei hopes to meet other Harimau Jaidan in the UK as well as maybe track down her birth parents on the road in-between shows.

Five Fearsome facts

Harimau Jaidan and by extent other types of werecat are a rare type of monster,even more so outside of their native Malaya and toralei has spent much of her life regardless of setting with this gnawing feeling of isolation. Even if she now has purrsephone and meowlody she's still the only one of her species at monster high,so the feeling of being alone in a crowd remains...

Toralei has a marked dislike for a lot of modern pop music,considering it too corporate and without any genuine message for her liking compared to punk and rock. (Although when their cousins aren't around he does listen to a few of his cousins Jpop CDs,don't tell anybody though…)

Aside from punk subculture,Toralei's other great love is dairy products, and beguiling their hard-edged image,ice cream,boba tea and other sweet treats rank among their all-time favourites. Toralei is also ragingly lactose intolerant but this doesn't stop him.

On top of singing and playing guitar for the Hissfits, toralei makes all of their bands merchandise ranging from badges and stickers to screen printed shirts and posters,and often incorporates some of it into her day-to-day outfits, arguing that actually the printing is intended to be wonky (it's not) and it wouldn't be properly punk if it weren't a little asymmetrical.

As a result of distrusting the model of digital only music distribution, toralei uses a lot of physical media to enjoy their music, using a physical CD player and distributing the hissfits music via burned CDs sold with the bands other merchandise. Toralei also uses said skills in making mixtapes for the people he cares most for in their life and casual Internet piracy.

Hello again everyone, I'm back with another one of these finally (and of one of my favourite monster high characters of all no less) + I'm also very close to finishing another profile so I doubt it'll be long before the next one of these is up,but anyways as usual, an explanation for my design choices:

Having previously drawn my version of toralei,whose design you can see here (hope to do more art of them and the rest of my monster high designs in the future btw) you probably already know that I've changed her monster type from a plain old werecat to a Harimau Jaidan, a were-tiger from Malayan folklore (Inspired by @jdoodlin amazing toralei design,who first introduced me to the Harimau Jaidan concept)

To keep it short, I never liked the "werecat" label, it felt a bit too artificial and I knew that there were multiple sorts of cat monsters from mythologies across the world that would make for much more interesting designs than just plain old cat people,hence why toralei is the only one of the 5 werecats to actually remain a werecat (well,weretiger). As for the others well, you'll just have to watch this space,as I have a whole smorgasbord of ideas for the twins,Catty and Catrine I can't wait to share with you all eventually in art and writing.

I thought about a Goth Darling based off Wednesday Addams, who would fit in in Diamond is Unbreakable

Darling was sent to live in Morioh as it’s the only school willing to accept her after what she did at all her other schools (She’ll live by herself in an apartment)

She’s a Foreigner from America

Darling wears a black version of Morioh’s School Uniform (All black and a very long skirt)

If Darling does have a Stand, she names it ‘Dream of Poe’ (A Gothic Metal Band that’s heavily inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s works)

Darling doesn’t care about being friends with Josuke or his pals, she’s only interested in solving the murders and mysteries in this small town (She does later get somewhat attached to Josuke and his friends, but only a little)

Darling thought Morioh was going to be a boring and ‘tasteless’ town, but the mysteries and murders made her realize she’ll actually enjoy her stay in Morioh as she has an interest in the macabre

Darling Stand takes different forms after some of Poe’s works like a Black Cat, Black Raven, Black Snake and a spooky Typewriter (Darling is tormented just like how Poe was believed to have been tormented by his own mind with madness and death, which she doesn’t mind)

Ooh interesting. So sorry for not answering this earlier, been busy with moving.

The long uniform reminds me of the sukeban (female high school delinquent gangs) so it might intimidate quite a few student and teacher. Of course she isn't but her appearance and attitude don't help with the assumptions.

Darling is pretty stoic however those who knows her enough can notice the very faintest of bit of joy on her face when something interests her. So imagine her delight hearing about murders, disappearances and supernatural happening in her new town.

She's always trying to get to the bottom of a mystery. Listening into the main gangs conversations just out of sight or unintentionally endangering her life chasing a lead. Personally I'd prefer her to not have a stand at the beginning. Without a stand her thoughts are left to go wild with assumptions with the clues she has written down.

Perhaps she gets struck by the arrow and survives. The next day at school she notices strange figures and eventually confronts the gang and demands answers. Perhaps Dream of Poe is a typewriter that will occasionally predict the future to reflect her curiosity and love of the macabre (always a tragedy and it is extremely vague. Sometimes it'll be a sentence describing what will happen, other times it's just a date and time, a location or even just a name) leaving her to piece together what is going to happen and when.

Juleka Couffaine Stone is a Japanese private high school student and the daughter of yakuza boss Jagged Stone, one of the greatest leaders of organized crime.

She would become a sukeban due to her rebellious personality.

One night she would find out that her father was being extorted by a rival gang after a bad exchange of contraband items of a mystical nature, including a bracelet that he secretly gave to her daughter.

The extortions would go as far as death threats for jagged, juleka couldn't let this continue but there wasn't much she could do.

That feeling of helplessness caused her to launch a scream full of frustration, in that her bracelet shines and a small creature called roarr comes out of it, tells her that he heard her pain and is willing to offer her help to defend her loved ones.

Juleka would use this power to locate the rival bands and would be in charge of giving them a beating that they would never forget.

With this power on her side, no one will ever lay a finger on her family again.

SD headcanon // Shohoku siblings

We've got the Akagi siblings as part of the official Slam Dunk canon, but I like thinking about what the siblings of the other Shohoku players would be like and came up with my own ideas for my headcanon.

For the record, in my SD headcanon universe Ayako and Rukawa don't have siblings.

EDIT (12/7/2022): THE FIRST SD actually addresses some of this!! I won't spoil anything but omg I'm so happy!!

Sakuragi Mei (桜木 芽生) // 20 years old (~4 years older than Hanamichi [16])

is attending cosmetology school in a different city, working towards becoming a hairdresser (although she does come back to Kanagawa every once in a while to check on Hanamichi)

she's super pretty and cool, when Akagi meets her he's stunned that SHE'S related to Hanamichi lol

was a sukeban in middle school and high school

being the oldest daughter she takes care of her family a lot, especially because her mother passed away when she and Hanamichi were young and her father passed away when she was in high school

was the first person to dye Hanamichi's hair when he was in 6th grade (at his request)

while she's tried a couple different hair colors for herself in the past, she mostly sticks to blonde

she dotes on Hanamichi a lot and is partially responsible for his behavior by praising him a "tensai" lol (although the "tensai" bit originally come from their grandfather)

however, she can definitely be tough on Hanamichi when she needs to be, so he's a little scared of her lol

Miyagi Suzu* (宮城 スズ) // 15 years old (~2 years younger than Ryota [17])

witty and outgoing, and she does look like/resemble Ryota lol

plays on her middle school soccer team and enjoys it, is considering different high school options since they don't have a girl's soccer club at Shohoku

she and Ryota bicker constantly and make fun of each other (all in good, sibling spirit). It also doesn't help that she and Ryota share a bathroom at home.

adores Ayako and always tells Ryota that he doesn't deserve her lol

Miyagi Yuto* ( 宮城 ユウト)// would be 20 years old (~3 years older than Ryota [17])

was a super easy going, sweet, and polite kid

also really liked basketball, which he and Ryota bonded over

at around 13 years old he got into an accident, and while his body was never found he's presumed to be deceased (...see "Piercing")

*Since Ryota's name is written in katakana for reasons not known to me, I'm just going to use katakana for the first names of his siblings lol

Mitsui Takeru (三井 尊)// 17 years old (~1 year younger than Hisashi [18])

attends school at Kainan, and nobody realizes he's Hisashi's younger brother for a while

he doesn't look that much like Hisashi at first glance, but if you know they're siblings you can see some resemblance. They're both around the same height.

personality-wise he's nearly the polar opposite of Hisashi: he keeps to himself, is a little awkward and cold, and he's really really smart (basically more similar in personality to Akagi), which is why he and Hisashi get on each other's nerves constantly

people who meet him and his brother for the first time presume Hisashi is the younger brother, lol

doesn't play sports

Kogure Masanobu (木暮 全延) // 24 years old (~6 years older than Kiminobu [18])

super charming and funny, but a bit insensitive at times

doesn't wear glasses, and is actually shorter than Kiminobu (which he hates, but to make up for it he fancies himself as the "better looking" brother)

played baseball in middle school, but his real passion is music so he didn't do any school clubs in high school (he also went to Shohoku) and instead went to go play with his band

started attending university but decided to drop out after the second year

to earn a living he currently helps out as a studio bass guitarist and drummer for small artists and picks up part-time gigs

can also play piano, (electric and some classical) guitar, and saxophone

was rebellious growing up, so he and his parents (particularly his dad) always had a rift between them. He still feels bad about this because he thinks it contributed to his parents being more strict on Kiminobu.

he and Kiminobu were super close when he lived at home, and they still are even though he and his family live in the Tokyo area now

has a wife and two-year-old daughter

Yasuda comes from a big family: he has 5 other siblings

Shiozaki has two older brothers

Iishi has a little baby sister (she's about 3 years old)
