ok! i think tumblr ate my fucking apple cider recipe post. still, my autumn equinox tradition must carry on!
Apollo's Foolproof From-Scratch Apple Cider That Was So Good It Allegedly Landed Me A Boyfriend
you will need:
12 apples (the variety is up to you, i usually do half granny smith and half whatever's on sale plus a red delicious for garnishing)
10oz raisins
cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise, nutmeg, allspice, cardamom pods, any other warming spices u like (whole > ground) (follow ur heart on the amounts, it's like garlic just throw so much in there. just go wild)
1 orange
brown sugar (i don't have measurements but be prepared to use a LOT lmao, i always buy at least one 32oz bag. you'll be sweetening to taste.)
large pot with lid
potato masher (optional)
two large bowls/pots/receptacles to strain the cider into
fine mesh strainer
cheesecloth or coffee filters (optional)
apple corer or knife
citrus zester
slotted spoon or ladle
the steps:
1. scrub apples gently under hot water to remove grocery store wax coating. core apples making sure all seeds & stems are removed. add apples, raisins, and mulling spices to pot with enough water to fully cover ingredients, and bring to boil. reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 1 hour.
2. scrub orange to remove wax. zest and juice, avoiding the pith & seeds. use a potato masher or other utensil to lightly mash boiled apple mixture so every apple slice is at least partially broken up, then add the zest & juice to the pot. bring back to boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer for another hour. then turn off the heat and allow mixture to cool.
3. place two mesh strainers over two bowls or pots (and cover each with a cheesecloth or coffee filters, if you have them). with a slotted spoon or ladle, remove as much of the solids from the pot as you can and place them in one strainer (the larger one, if they are different sizes) to drain, then press out as much liquid into the cheesecloth as possible.
4. pour the cider from the simmer pot into the second cheesecloth and press. combine the liquid from both bowls.
5. add brown sugar to taste
cooking tips:
the times listed above are bare minimums. once all the ingredients are in the pot (minus sugar!) you can simmer as long as you want, so long as someone's nearby to supervise.
always add any sweeteners after the cooking process. otherwise, they'll burn and make the whole thing bitter.
if it's too acidic, add baking soda or more spices. if it's not acidic enough, add lemon juice, additional orange juice, or apple cider vinegar.
variations:
add 12oz fresh cranberries to the first step
sub oranges for lemons or apple cider vinegar
sub brown sugar for straight molasses, maple syrup, or alternative sweetener of your choice (I'd imagine fig or other fruit-based sweeteners would work best)
report back to me if you try something new!! i want to hear how it turned out!
serving suggestions:
add three or four cinnamon imperials (red hots) to your mug, along with a dash of fireball whiskey if you're so inclined. i cannot stress enough how fucking amazing this tastes.
garnish with apple slices, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and/or star anise
if you have dairy-free ice cream on hand, pour some cider over a scoop. you can use dairy ice cream, but it's more likely to curdle.
freeze some in an ice cube tray, then blend with some non-frozen cider for a slushie
ok I've never tried this, but i bet blending with pumpkin puree would slap. PLEASE tell me if you try it
this makes a metric fuckload of cider, which is very rich and can be watered down considerably (seriously). share with your friends and/or freeze some to last the season (or halve it, i guess, but that's no fun :P)

Quick n dirty Hurricane post
Hurricane Shopping List
Food:
The government will tell you that you need 3 days of food, you need at least a week. After Ian we were flooded for about 4 days and had no power for 8. You want non perishables and you want tasty non perishables, get things you and your family like. Keep your eye out for sales through the year to keep a good stash.if you don’t have a grill,  Get a mini charcoal grill so you can also still cook
Soups
tuna and other canned meats
Ramen (fun, not nutritious)
Snacks like chips and crackers, salsa!*
Single serving sauce packs (go hog wild at fast food places)
Cereal
Fresh fruit
Pasta sauce and pasta
Bread and shelf stable toppings like jelly* and peanut butter
Treats! It sucks, get some gummy bears, get BEER!
Instant coffee
*these aren't technically shelf stable, but yes they are lol, at least for a few days, sugar and acid are both preservatives, if it looks funny, don't eat it, but they'll be fine for a few days
Everything in your freezer will be good too, at least for a while. Eat everything in your fridge first, but after a few days, if you are going to lose everything in your freezer anyway, open it up and start using meats etc in there.
Water:
There are 4 categories for water, Drinking, cooking, cleaning, and flushing. ** if you do not have hot water, you need to be using bleach or vinegar or everything that gross. Hot water is our best friend and if we do not have her we need to kill every germ, without proper plumbing there are bad germs everywhere.
Drinking: half gallon  to gallon per person per day
Cooking: A gallon per day, more if you have a larger family
These two need to be in sanitized containers intended for water storage, so bottled water, or food grade 5 gallon containers, tractor supply has good ones, or the huge water jugs at the grocery store.
Cleaning***: as much as you can, personally i start saving every 2 liter, OJ bottle, milk jug etc from about January to hurricane season so i can fill them all up when a storm is on the way. This doubles as you-cleaning water, so the more the better
Flushing: as much as physically possible. Fill up every tub, every sink, fill up your trash cans. I am 100% serious you WILL run out of flushing water before anything else. Literally as much as possible.
Misc items:
Battery banks, whether proper banks, or your laptop to use as a bank
A full tank of gas, never go under half a tank during hurricane season
This radio is great
Proper first aid kit (you should already have one tbh)
Any medications you need, check your state laws to see if you can get emergency prescription refills
Toys, books, any kind of entertainment really, it gets boring, couldnt imagine being a toddler.
Extra pet food
Baby wipes
Extra period products
Corn starch is a decent dry shampoo
General tips:
Find a radio station with a morning show, find several. There was a group in my area that was broadcasting 24/7 taking calls from people with trucks and people who needed help or medicine. They saved lives.
Park your cars as high as possible, and as close to your house as you can
It is so much better to feel silly with all this stuff than to be caught off guard
Lock your pets in a non carpeted room if you can.
Do laundry!!!!!
Shower and scrub every square inch a few hours before the storm starts, wash your hair!!!
Have 2 weeks of undies
Check on your neighbors
DO NOT GO INTO FLOOD WATERS WHY DO PEOPLE DO THIS THIS IS HOW YOU GET HEPATITIS
Have a plan for if it floods, have important docs and some food in a bag ready to go. If you are in an attic without a way to break through the roof, you will drown.

Curtis and Honey This or That Masterlist
Life Is Short So Make It Sweet Masterlist
Tumblr media
“Welp till next year.” Curtis gave a sigh, one filled with yearning for next spring when he could roll his Camaro out of the garage into the gleaming sunshine. But now that fall was here and winter wouldn’t be far behind, already the cold was blistering as the winds coming off the lake chased away any illusion of summer, it was time to put her to bed.
And it was one of the reasons he didn’t look forward to the end of autumn. As much as you loved the cool weather, he much preferred warm summer where the Camaro got to run the roads, bonfires and beer were a nightly thing and his Honey was wearing all the very tempting sundresses.
You made him appreciate fall a little more, although he probably never really love it because of the cold.
Now that the Camaro was put away safely, he worked on picking up his garage, making sure that his tools were placed back and any of the excess oil and gas he had used was prepared to be properly disposed of. With a wipe of his hands on his rag, he started to go inside.
Opening the door was a blast of sweet heat, the aroma reminiscent of when his gram was alive. He inhaled deeply as he was sure to close the door behind him, his stomach rolling with desire at what he was smelling.
You stood at the nearby kitchen countertop, swaying in place while you were sifting flour into a large bowl. Ingredients for your favorite cookies were scattered across the counter in a bit of chaos that you made sense of. “It smells like heaven in here.” Curtis muttered to you while you tossed a grin at him, grabbing at your spoon to give a mix. “What is in the oven?”
“Your favorite Curtis.”
“The chocolate chunk with flaky sea salt?” He asked rather hopeful.
You pinched some dough from the nearby chocolate chunk cookie bowl, holding it up for Curtis to taste. He did, enthusiastically, nibbling on your fingertips and sucking all remnants of sugar from them. “You can be my taste tester.” You offered. “But they gotta come out of the oven first.”
“I'm willing to wait.” Curtis informed you while making his way to the sink to scrub his hands clean from before, then as you continued mixing your cookie dough, he did up the few dishes you used so they were clean for your next use.
“What are you baking all these for though?” He asked while you popped your batch out of the oven.
“Bake sale, we’re trying to raise some money for the drama club since their isn’t really any extra this year.” Your tone tinged on frustrated, Curtis knowing fully how strained you were feeling with the school this year. “You finish putting away the Camaro?”
Swiftly changing the subject, Curtis suspected it was because you were just exhausted about it at this point, he let it slide for your sake. He nodded as he eased into a nearby bar stool opposite of where you were baking. Still nearby, but out of your way. “She is all in bed and waiting for next summer. I was dreading it…”
“But?” you broke a chocolate chunk cookie in half after it came out of the oven, letting the steam escape to cool off. You leaned across the counter to reach Curtis, offering if to him.
Taking his first bite, he chewed slowly, savoring it. It was so reminiscent of his childhood that it made him feel so happy right in that moment. “But I come inside to this and suddenly life is fucking good and sweet, I wouldn’t have it any other way.” He said with sincerity that made you beam happily at him.
“The garage is heated, right?” You questioned while eating the other half of the cookie, Curtis reaching over to steal another, the gooey chocolate to much of a temptation for him to resist.
“Yeah, I mean not like the house but I keep it warm. Alot of our water pipes go through the garage and when they freeze its always a bitch to thaw back out.” He stated, more focused on his cookie at the second then what you were starting to hint at.
“Well…” You lean against the counter, wiggling your brows suggestively at him. “The Camaro might now be driveable but we can still make use of her then.”
He swallowed suddenly, the suggestive interest flaring in his gaze and now baking cookies was no longer on your agenda. “Pretty Girl, I fucking love the way you think.” He snapped up to a stand, making you giggle as you wriggled out of your apron. “You need to do anymore?”
“That last batch is due to come out right now.” You tossed your apron on the counter and he tilted his head to the garage.
“Get your sweet ass in the backseat Pretty Girl, I will be right in.” He grabbed at the pot holders to hurry up and get the sugar cookies out so he could follow after you.

Year-End Poll #50: 1999
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Cher, TLC, Monica, Whitney Houston, Britney Spears, Sixpence None the Richer, Christina Aguilera, Sugar Ray, Deborah Cox, Ricky Martin. End description]
More information about this blog here
As to be expected with a year marking the end of a millennium, a lot has happened this year. With Believe, Cher has become one of the few artists to have hits in four different decades. The song is also notable for its use of Auto-Tune. While the software had been used before to stealthily edit vocal performances, Believe cranked up the effect to give Cher's vocals a futuristic, almost otherworldly sound reminiscent of the vocoder.
Speaking of technology, 1999 also marks the release of a little website whose effects on the music industry are still felt today: Napster. With the leak of the MP3 format to the public, sites like Napster made it easy for people to share and download music for free. Maybe this could have been prevented if the record industry was able to use the MP3 themselves, but it's understandable why many were hesitant. The MP3 heavily compressed the sound and traded audio quality for file space. Some people assumed that the general public wouldn't want to sacrifice audio quality in order to get free music.
But there's another reason why the MP3 might have failed to catch on in an industry-approved way. By the late 90's, CD sales were at an all-time high and so were the record industry's profits. The TRL era was in full effect stirring up the teenage fanbases (and anti-fanbases). With artists like Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys (to be featured later), the Max Martin production style could be heard all over the pop charts.
1999 also came with heightened anxiety over the Y2K Bug, the fear that computers wouldn't be able to process dates containing the new year. Obviously the world didn't end at the dawn of the new millennium, but that was due to the efforts of people working behind the scenes to prevent these errors. Because of their efforts, life would be able to continue on in the year 2000.
But maybe not for the record industry.

New acquisition, whether I wanted it or not! Currently charging more while I run the initial software update.
My existing watch went batshit insane in what looked like a hardware failure kind of way the other night. It had been acting quirky responding for a day or so, but then things escalated pretty suddenly. Besides just rebooting, I tried factory resetting it just in case--but it wouldn't respond, reconnect to the phone, or seemingly turn back on other than to occasionally make weird noises after that. So yeah, it seems to be pretty much toast. I actually stashed it in the flameproof containment box that is our oven before I went to bed, just to be safe with the way it also started heating up. 😬
That was a Galaxy Watch 3 which had constantly gotten used pretty hard for a couple of years, which I actually bought not long after the 4 came out when they started going pretty cheap. So, I figure it had a pretty good run, all things considered.
So, this time I did upgrade--to a 4, when Samsung is up to 6 now. 😊 Similar thinking there. There were some decent sales prices going, and it should suit my somewhat limited needs as well as anything else. I am still mostly just wanting one for the handy CGM display, plus timers and alarms for my shitty executive function. Most other features are gravy.
Thankfully, Mr. C was willing to pop over to Lund this morning and pick one up from the closest Elgiganten that actually had those sale watches in stock. He actually managed to get it for free, switching over to a different phone plan like he had been vaguely considering anyway. Multiple birds with one stone! He also mentioned a family plan that I should be able to switch my current number over to, so both of us can get off prepaid plans and get more data allowance in the bargain. Will probably do that.
Anyway:
Tumblr media
Now set up with currently one of the faces that came with G-Watch Wear. Still need to play around with that to hopefully get it displaying the way I want it, but I do have a blood sugar display again! Looks like the graph right in the middle refreshed itself after the watch update. I had previously been running the original G-Watch (pulling data from Diabox), but the GW4 and up run a different OS from
Also just ordered because I really am pretty rough on things:
A stick-on screen protector, plus this supposedly rugged case to hopefully help protect the thing "for those who are adventurous, exercise or want extra good protection".
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the aftermarket screen protector on my now-dead watch. 🙄 I think the screen itself is fine under there, but yeah I think some extra protection against banging the thing around may be in order.
It really doesn't help that I am not just a hyper klutz, but also use a manual wheelchair which makes watches easy to bash up against the pushrims, scrub against the tires, etc. I have learned to be a little more aware and careful of how I'm using the watch wrist, but that probably did not improve the lifespan of the previous watch. Ah well.

hiii I saw you ask obelisart(?) about non-sticky skincare for sensory issues and I have similar sensory issues (mine are more about feeling slick/suffocated) and I got really into figuring out skincare stuff so I thought I’d send my opinions? if I’m overstepping feel free to ignore me!
disclaimer: I don’t have actual qualifications beyond a hobbyist’s interest in biology/chemistry and a lot of hyper focused internet research, my skin type is dry/dehydrated with a lot of oil buildup “sitting on top” throughout the day, I don’t often get pimples but when I do they’re long-lasting and leave marks behind, and I don’t have any health conditions beyond my sensory issues that might be affected by my skincare routine. also, I mostly shop at drugstores, I’m not going to exclusively recommend overpriced/obscure nonsense
my biggest thing was looking for stuff with hyluaronic acid as its main moisturizing ingredient. you can get it on its own in lil dropper bottles and it’s almost water thin and absorbs really fast. on its own, it dries a little tacky which might be bad for sticky-related sensory issues, but in a lotion/cream, hyluaronic acid helps keeps things thin and light. my favourite moisturizer is the neutrogena hydro boost which is relatively budget-friendly where I am but ymmv. I think it’s sodium hyluaronate on the label. if you’ve got $$$, squalane has a similar-but-better moisturizing effect but it lasts longer and has more of a dry oil texture, I have a tiny bottle I found on clearance and it lasts.
also, try using a toner! because it usually has a water-like texture, it doesn’t trigger anything for me but it makes a huge difference layered under moisturizer. layering lots of thin products in general helps bc I can skip steps on days I can’t handle them. brightening or skin-texture-evening toners are texturally the safest bet, moisturizing or soothing toners might have risky “thick” ingredients.
I bought a face spray on clearance for those days I don’t even want to touch my face but it’s itchy and mad and it actually really works! the active ingredient in mine is cica extract (it’s the dr. jart one) which is pretty close to water texture so it doesn’t trigger me.
using a physical (scrubby) exfoliant helps me have a “less reactive” surface to apply my products too, elf makes a peeling exfoliant that’s really nice but even a washcloth or a sugar scrub would work.
steaming my face helps moisturize it a bunch and all I have to do is put a tiny amount of moisturizer on top to seal it in and it feels amazing for headaches too. I have a face steamer I found on clearance but even a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head will work just fine.
I really like sheet masks bc they might be a sensory grey area depending on the formula, but they’re only on my face for 20 min max and then I can take them off, as opposed to a product that I’d wear until i next wash my face. the papery sheet means the texture is usually fine. a store near me usually has tonymoly, the crème shop, and innisfree multipacks on sale and they almost always have a safe dry finish once the product is absorbed. innisfree labels theirs as water type, essence type, or serum type. water type would be the safest for avoiding stickiness.
I like having a night routine that uses my heavier products bc I’m not being triggered if I’m asleep and then I have a lil more leeway in the morning. the laneige water sleeping mask is pricy (but often in the overstock stores like winners, marshalls, tj maxx near me at a fair price) but always not just a safe texture, but an enjoyable texture, and it makes my face so comfortable and soft. I genuinely use the water sleeping mask ingredient list as a reference point whenever I read an ingredient list. on my bad sensory days, it’s my whole skincare routine. I’ve heard the glow recipe watermelon glow sleeping mask has a similar (slightly heavier) texture but I’ve never seen it on sale.
cold products trigger me less, I often put things in the fridge before using them.
sometimes I go to stores with testers all by myself for like two hours and just try all the products so that way I can build a mental catalogue of what triggers me where, when, and how. on crowded days the staff won’t even notice you and on empty days they’ll leave you alone nbd if you say “oh I just wanted to try these out before I actually bought them”, plus they’re super helpful if you ask things like “oh I love the texture of this but I need something for my dry elbows/my stubborn pimples/etc.”, they’ll usually give you recommendations at every price point. also, if what you like is expensive, you can usually google dupes or find products with the same ingredients.
“bad” texture ingredients (imo): dimethcone or silicone (silicates) give that too-smooth slightly tacky suffocating texture, but some ppl prefer that slight tackiness over a more sticky experience. dimethcone is usually in gel-texture products, which is what I prefer for my face and body, but for my hands (the most easily triggered part of me), dimethcone is a no-go, which is why I have to wash my hands after doing my face. the amount and the other ingredients in the product means that it’s very dependent. I don’t like paraffin/paraffinium liquidum and petrolatum bc of the overwhelming waxy texture, mineral oil might provoke the same reactive bc they’re all petroleum byproducts. xanthan gum and carnauba wax would most likely be terrible for stickiness too. honey is not as rough as expected bc it often loses most of its stickiness when mixed with other stuff.
“maybe” textures: I use a hand cream that’s nearly 100% glycerin, it’s still not great while it’s on but it absorbs fast and leaves the least amount of texture/sensation behind, I’ve heard ppl say similar things about lanolin. products that use starch might have a better texture than expected bc the starch mitigates it but that varies, things with alcohol ingredients feel okay while going on but once all the alcohol evaporates it feels like all the other bad stuff is like a sludge on my face, so I try to avoid it.
“good” textures: texture ingredients are usually moisturizing or filler ingredients, but sometimes products use oils. that’s really dependent on the oil itself but I usually play it safe and get my active ingredients as acids or extracts, aloe is great light texture that has a dry finish. other cacti are similarly nice. green tea or willow extracts are usually very thin with a nice finish and they do a lot to calm down my skin and make it more comfortable. glycol shouldn’t be a safe ingredient but for me it usually is
if you do use a sticky product or if your tolerance is lower for whatever reason, a loose face powder on top of your face can “absorb” the worst of the texture so that it’s back in a tolerable range. this is best on days you’re going light on product bc you don’t want to get a paste/sludge feeling on top of your face.
using a nice moisturizing face wash can reduce the need for follow up products. I use the cerave hydrating cleanser which is fairly cheap where I am, especially for the size. the cetaphil one is nice too and I’ve heard good things about aveeno. neutrogena always has my back so I’m sure they’ve got something too but they can be expensive if they’re not on sale. because it’s a face wash that’s getting rinsed off anyways, heavier/riskier ingredients like oils, emollients, or occlusives are okay.
anyways, I’m very sorry if I overstepped/crossed boundaries/otherwise was rude. I had a rough time always feeling dry and itchy and like my skin was too tight and not being able to explain why “just put some cream on” was not an adequate solution and it’s been maybe three years now of me still trying to classify exactly what my triggers are, so I’m always very excited to chat with other people doing the same thing. don’t beat yourself up if you accidentally buy a “bad texture” and I hope you find a solution that works for you soon!
Oh my gosh, thank you so much. This is all very helpful. I appreciate the advice! I took many notes while reading this and I'll let you know how it goes!

* important headcanons to consider.
Tumblr media
can they use chopsticks : Totally. She learned at a pretty young age so she has no difficulty with it.
what do they do when they can’t sleep : Iris overworks herself to the point of exhaustion and instant snooze. If that doesn’t help or if there’s nothing for her to do, she usually turns to whatever hard liquor she has access to at the moment. And if there’s no booze she’ll just go chat with people around the outpost until it’s time to work again.
what would they impulse buy at the grocery store :  Berries and berry-flavoured sweets. Cup noodles, too, esp if there’s a sale. And she always gets Talcott some sweet-n-sour candies on food runs.
what order do they wash things in the shower : Face, hair, then a good full-body scrub and rinse to get the grime and blood out.
what’s their coffee order :  Cream, always. And a fuck-ton of sugar or honey if it can be helped. She used to be that person who gets excited for the seasonal drink flavours, but it’s probably tough to find pumpkin spice drinks during the WoR lol.
what sort of apps would they have on their smartphone : The King's Knight and Justice Monsters Five apps will never leave her phone. She has fond memories of playing those with the bros and her family back in the day. She mostly uses the messaging systems and the map for work. Her phone camera gets some use still, and she also often looks back at old pics in her gallery.
how do they act around children : She’s great with kids! She’s still sort of a kid at heart so she enjoys spending time and having fun with kids when she has the time. The ‘fun big sister’ type.
what would they watch on tv when they’re bored and nothing they really like is on :  Probably a documentary on plants or birds. Or any channel that has music playing constantly. She’s the type to find something to do physically while listening to audios/music in the background.
