Getting older with someone you love is wild. The ups and downs, the health scares, the cheerleading, etc.

He has been the kind of support that has forever changed my life and perspective. I love my silly goat man and how he puts up with my Leo attitude.

I’m doing this cheesy exercise inspired by a recent @thisamerlife episode, finding little moments of joy in everyday life and it’s been a powerful experience, even for this grumpy old witch. After 50 turns around the sun, it’s sometimes hard for me to find joy but this exercise has been rewarding; with this eyeball issue it’s been easy to adopt a bleak outlook. But reminding myself everyday to find things that feel joyful has been good for me; I feel less stressed, not as quick to anger, more engaged with nature, more meditative, more patient. So I thought I’d share a few things that brought me joy this week and invite you to share if you feel so inclined. It feels really good, I promise.

—I heard a rumor that Kate Bush is recording a new album. If she tours I’m there.

—My favorite birds, Bewickii’s wrens have been visiting my garden and eating up aphids.

—I bought a wine bottle corker and I want to give mead to all my friends when it’s ready.

—I listened to a podcast about the Tudor musician William Byrd and cried when they played his music.

—I went to see Barbie alone and smuggled in a sandwich and a can of wine and I laughed and cried nonstop. Someone booed Jared Leto during the previews.

—I had an amazing conversation with my friend Ceci about sexism and I haven’t stopped thinking about it. Read Merlyn Stone’s book When God Was a Woman if you need some feminist bolstering.

—I was singing Sugar Magnolia on my way to the candle supply place and I stopped at a convenience store for a cold drink, and Sugar Magnolia was playing when I went in.

—My ancient feeble cat Moxie is in love with a cardboard box and is suddenly a kitten again.

Song Review: Eric Krasno and Otis McDonald - “Sugar Magnolia”

The interesting thing about Eric Krasno and Otis McDonald’s cover of “Sugar Magnolia” is how the pair stick so close to the Grateful Dead’s American Beauty version, yet stray so far.

The result is like a musical Rubik’s Cube - easy to be enamored with but nearly impossible to determine what, exactly, is the allure.

The departures are subtle: slight twists on the melody, rhythm and background vocals; sneaky aural allusions to the Allman Brothers Band; and a slickness the Dead typically eschewed.

All of the which render Krasno and McDonald’s “Sugar Magnolia” a track that’s difficult to crack - part remake, part reinterpretation and neither of the preceding.
