Note
There was a free event on my college campus to paint tiny terracotta pots. Tomorrow there will be succulents to put in them. I stood at a table with total strangers from around the world sharing in the very human act of creating art. Everyone there was happy.
A man from Saudi Arabia taught me how to make the paint smooth. He was painting a tiny purple pot that matched his purple shirt. It’s his favorite color. I passed those tips on to a woman from Malaysia. She told me she liked the flowers on my pot. It’s blue and matches my blue shirt- because blue is my favorite color.
This is what humans are. Everything else is just obstruction.

Uncover the Best Restaurants and Hidden Gems on Petaling Street, Malaysia
Petaling Street, nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, is more than just a bustling market street. It's a vibrant blend of history, culture, and mouthwatering cuisine, making Petaling Street in Malaysia a must-visit destination for food lovers and travelers alike. Whether you’re seeking the best restaurants in Malaysia or exploring hidden gems, Petaling Street has something to offer everyone. This article delves into the top restaurants and the unique experiences that await you on this iconic street.
Kim Lian Kee: The Birthplace of Hokkien Mee
Tumblr media
One of the oldest and most famous eateries on Petaling Street is Kim Lian Kee. Established in 1927, this restaurant is often credited as the birthplace of Hokkien Mee, a stir-fried noodle dish that has become a staple of Malaysian cuisine. The noodles, thick and chewy, are coated in a rich, dark soy sauce, and are typically served with a mix of pork, squid, and prawns. The smoky flavor, achieved by cooking over a high flame in a traditional wok, makes this dish a must-try for any visitor.
Restoran Old China Café: A Taste of Nostalgia
For those seeking a taste of the past, Restoran Old China Café offers a unique dining experience. Located just a short walk from Petaling Street, this restaurant is housed in a building that dates back to the pre-war era. The décor, with its antique furniture and vintage photographs, transports diners to a bygone era. The menu features classic Peranakan (Straits Chinese) dishes, such as Nyonya Laksa and Beef Rendang, prepared with recipes passed down through generations.
Hon Kee Porridge: Comfort in a Bowl
A visit to Petaling Street wouldn’t be complete without sampling the comfort food that has sustained locals for decades. Hon Kee Porridge, a humble stall that has been around since the 1940s, is famous for its silky smooth rice porridge. The signature dish here is the raw fish porridge, where fresh fish slices are served on the side, allowing diners to add them to the steaming hot porridge, cooking them instantly. It’s a simple yet satisfying meal, perfect for breakfast or a light supper.
Merchant’s Lane: A Hidden Café Gem
Tumblr media
Hidden in plain sight, Merchant’s Lane is a café that has earned a reputation as one of Petaling Street’s most Instagram-worthy spots. Tucked away behind an unassuming façade, this café is a sanctuary of calm amidst the chaos of Chinatown. The interior is a blend of rustic charm and modern chic, with exposed brick walls, potted plants, and cozy nooks. The menu features a fusion of Western and Asian dishes, with popular choices like the ‘Italian Chow Mein’ and the ‘South China Sea’ – a unique take on Malaysian Nasi Lemak. Don’t forget to try their signature desserts and specialty coffee, perfect for a leisurely afternoon break.
Sze Ngan Chye: The Legendary Roast Duck
Petaling Street is home to many street vendors, but few are as iconic as Sze Ngan Chye, known for its delicious roast duck. This stall, which has been in operation for over 60 years, is famous for its succulent, crispy-skinned roast duck. The secret lies in the marinade, a blend of herbs and spices that has been perfected over generations. The ducks are roasted to perfection, with a golden-brown skin that crackles with every bite. It’s no wonder that locals and tourists alike flock to this stall for a taste of one of Kuala Lumpur’s best roast ducks.
Central Market: A Cultural Haven
Just a stone’s throw from Petaling Street is Central Market, a hub of arts and crafts that showcases Malaysia’s diverse cultural heritage. Here, you can find everything from traditional batik prints to handmade jewelry, as well as local artwork. The market is also home to numerous art galleries and cultural performances, providing a deeper insight into Malaysian culture.
Kwai Chai Hong: A Walk through History
Tumblr media
Tucked away in a back alley off Petaling Street, Kwai Chai Hong is a restored heritage lane that offers a glimpse into Chinatown’s past. The alley is adorned with murals that depict scenes of daily life in the 1960s, transporting visitors back in time. It’s a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
Guan Di Temple: A Spiritual Retreat
For a moment of peace and reflection, visit the Guan Di Temple, one of the oldest and most revered temples in Kuala Lumpur. Dedicated to Guan Yu, the Chinese god of war, this temple is a place of worship and tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of Chinatown. The intricate architecture and the smell of incense create a serene atmosphere that contrasts with the lively streets outside.
Conclusion
Petaling Street is a destination that offers a rich tapestry of experiences. From savoring the best local dishes at iconic restaurants to discovering hidden cultural gems, this street encapsulates the essence of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown. Whether you’re a food lover, a history enthusiast, or simply a curious traveler, Petaling Street promises a memorable journey through the heart of Malaysia’s vibrant capital.

Babugosha: An Exotic Delight
Tumblr media
Title: Babugosha: An Exotic Delight
---
In the realm of exotic fruits, there exists a hidden gem, often overlooked amidst its more renowned counterparts. Nestled in the lush, tropical regions of Southeast Asia, the Babugosha fruit, with its enigmatic allure, captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to taste its succulent flesh.
Originating from the fertile lands of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, the Babugosha is a fruit shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Its exterior is adorned with a thick, green rind, reminiscent of a spiky armor protecting the treasure within. As one ventures to unlock its secrets, they are met with a tantalizing aroma that hints at the richness concealed beneath its rugged exterior.
The first encounter with a Babugosha is a sensory journey unlike any other. With cautious precision, the outer layer is peeled away, revealing a sight to behold. The inner flesh, velvety and luscious, glistens with natural juices, beckoning the taste buds to indulge in its exotic sweetness.
Biting into a ripe Babugosha is akin to discovering a hidden paradise. The initial burst of flavor is a harmonious blend of tropical notes, reminiscent of pineapple and mango, yet uniquely its own. Each bite is a symphony of taste sensations, with hints of citrus dancing on the palate, followed by a subtle floral undertone that lingers like a gentle breeze.
But what truly sets the Babugosha apart is its texture. Unlike other fruits, which may be either too firm or too soft, the Babugosha strikes the perfect balance. Its flesh is firm yet yielding, offering a satisfying crunch followed by a melt-in-your-mouth sensation that is pure bliss.
Beyond its unparalleled taste and texture, the Babugosha boasts an array of health benefits that further elevate its status as a true superfood. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, it nourishes the body from within, boosting immunity and promoting overall well-being. Its high fiber content aids in digestion, while its low calorie count makes it a guilt-free indulgence for health-conscious individuals.
In addition to its culinary appeal, the Babugosha holds a special place in the cultural traditions of the regions where it is grown. In Indonesia, it is often offered as a gesture of hospitality to guests, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. In Malaysia, it is believed to possess mystical properties, with some cultures using it in traditional medicine to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.
Despite its many virtues, the Babugosha remains relatively unknown outside of its native habitats. Its limited availability and short shelf life make it a rare find in markets beyond Southeast Asia, adding to its mystique and allure for adventurous food enthusiasts.
For those fortunate enough to encounter this exotic delight, the experience is nothing short of extraordinary. Whether enjoyed fresh on a tropical island or incorporated into culinary creations around the world, the Babugosha leaves an indelible impression that lingers long after the last bite is savored.
In a world where the familiar often overshadows the extraordinary, the Babugosha stands as a testament to the endless wonders waiting to be discovered. With its alluring aroma, tantalizing taste, and myriad health benefits, it is more than just a fruit – it is a true embodiment of nature's bounty, inviting us to savor the beauty and richness of the world around us.
So, the next time you find yourself on a journey of culinary exploration, remember to seek out the Babugosha and experience the magic for yourself. In its exotic allure lies a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered, offering a taste of paradise unlike any other.

大家好! It isn't often that I come across sambal udang (prawns/shrimp) at cai fan (mixed dishes and rice) stalls, so when I saw some, I just had to order it. It's a less internationally famous dish available in Singapore and Malaysia, but it is delicious. I don't tolerate very spicy food well, so the mild kick is something I appreciate. My eyes don't water, my mouth doesn't feel as if it's on fire and, at the same time, it enhances the flavour of my meal.
Tumblr media
youtube
I haven't tried curry pork ribs, so when my usual breakfast place served them, I ordered them to go along with bee tai mak (short rice noodles). According to the stall owner, their customers love the dish because they cook the pork till its texture resembles mutton and I could see why after my first bite. Chewy yet tender, the meat was completely coated with fragrant curry and spices. Somehow, the dish paired so well with crisp stirfried cabbage and utterly delicious bee tai mak (short rice noodles). It was so good, I even gave their curry chicken a go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
For my birthday in advance, Grace and Douglas bought big Chinese pomfret (a more expensive type of fish), which they steamed Cantonese style with plenty of chopped garlic and Chinese parsley. I almost finished the entire fish, it was so delicious! They also cooked vinegared pork trotter and rice. Finally, all of this good food was washed down with beer. I'm grateful for da yu da rou (big fish big meat) during this period of food inflation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
As I tucked into thick succulent slices of fresh fish, crunchy cabbage and fragrant yi mian (ee fu noodles), I was humbled by the knowledge that an entire population is starving in war-torn Gaza. The situation is so dire that the UN has warned about imminent famine by May. This is on top of over 31,000 killed and 70,000 injured by Israeli attacks. Some countries' leaders have insisted that Israel has the right to self defence. Whilst I agree, that does not give it any right to commit genocide.
Tumblr media
youtube
Even though life is hard in my country at the mo thanks to food hyperinflation, I try to remember that for innocent Palestinians in Gaza, surviving is a struggle. We may not have a lot to spare for lavishness if we want to save for a comfortable retirement, but we eat nutritious meals. When confronted by the tremendous suffering of an entire population, our deteriorating standards of living pale in comparison. My heart, mind and prayers are with the Palestinians as their death toll soars in the midst of the conflict with Israel and their survivors starve. 下次见!

i got the impression you take care of a lot of plants don't you-? i don't know if you take care of any ferns but i've got one and i'd like your plant advice if applicable: the leaves on the bottom keep getting crispy and dying. i suspect underwatering but surely once a week is sufficient? I'm only used to taking care of succulents so i'm turning to you as someone who knows their way around regular plants
Tumblr media
I...
I AM SO SORRY!
I LIKE PLANTS BUT I AM BAD AT THEM! LIKE REALLY, REALLY, STUPIDLY BAD! I can even kill succulent plants! I killed cactuses before! I don't have a green thumb; I have a DEATH thumb!
I like pictures of them and looking at them in the wild or in gardens BECAUSE I know I'm incapable of bringing them to life! It's like video games! I suck at them but I like them anyway!
... I am trying to plant them though. More of them this year! Because it would delight a very good friend of mine! My lotuses are really my experiments. Lotuses are very easy to mind, and they are beautiful and inspiring. Mine are not exactly the bustling picture of health right now, but so far they are resisting my death touch well enough. Please just let them grow in spite of my terrible Poop Hands! Please let one of them Become Enlightened (i.e. blossom)!
Re: Ferns
Speaking out of nothing but general scienctific knowledge, I'd wager that a plant that is outside/outdoors would require more water than indoors simply because of the difference in the rate of evaporation. If your fern is planted outdoors, it might need more water than if it is indoors.
The amount of water a fern might need depends on its species, I think. Like many other plants. Did you get it from a nursery or vendor? They can probably tell ya how much water it needs.
There can also be other reasons why the bottom leaves are dying:
not enough (sun)light?
not enough nutrients?
temperature issue?
The first point is possible because you mentioned bottom leaves. The second point is me making guesses because I don't know if ferns require that many nutrients compared to flowering plants like lotuses and others. The third point is also a very wild guess; the temperature in Malaysia doesn't vary much. It's either sunny or stormy. Tropical climate, baby! We don't need a greenhouse or a sunroom; our entire place is already that hot and humid. But your place does have seasonal phases, so...
My best advice being a terrible ass plant-admirer is to ask the person who sold you/gave you this fern. They are going to be the best at knowing your fern and its needs!
(and then come back and tell me what's up with it so I can learn something new, bruh. I kinda wanna try making a terrarium this year, and I think some ferns are suitable for that? I hope I don't end up recreating a biodome of death...)
