Songkhla province is a key economic and tourist hub in Thailand, primarily because it borders Malaysia, serving as a gateway for trade and travel between the two nations. This article takes you on a journey through the three important border crossings between Songkhla and Malaysia: Sadao, Padang Besar, and Ban Prakop. Each has its unique role in enhancing trade, tourism, and transportation. Let's explore!
Sadao Border Crossing (Dan Nok)
Known locally as Dan Nok, the Sadao border crossing is the busiest and most crucial in Songkhla province. It connects directly to the Bukit Kayu Hitam crossing in Kedah, Malaysia. The drive from Hat Yai to Sadao is a breezy 58 kilometers, about an hour by car. There's also a daily minivan service from Central Festival Hat Yai to Dan Nok, enhancing its economic and tourist significance. Friendly and welcoming, the local community thrives with Malaysian tourists visiting all year round. Located just 13 kilometers from downtown Sadao, it offers a seamless travel experience and is open daily from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM, Thai time.
Padang Besar
Another vital crossing in Songkhla is Padang Besar, linking with the state of Perlis in Malaysia. This permanent crossing is bustling for general travel and goods transportation, located about 60 kilometers from Hat Yai. Padang Besar features both road and rail entry points, including train stations on both sides of the border, simplifying immigration and customs processes. The local market offers a vibrant mix of goods such as clothes, food, and daily necessities at bargain prices. Traveling here is not only convenient but also a great chance to immerse in the local culture. Padang Besar operates daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Thai time.
Ban Prakop Border Crossing
Though smaller than Sadao and Padang Besar, Ban Prakop is no less significant. Located in Na Thawi, Songkhla, it connects with Kedah, Malaysia, and is pivotal for exporting consumer goods and motorcycle parts. The crossing has been part of a long-term development plan, reflecting its growing role in cross-border trade since it opened in 2013. Ban Prakop operates daily from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Thai time.

Let’s see what fascinating stops we can make on this whirlwind trip!
What to Know Before You Go?
Before embarking on your tasty and shopping-filled day trip in Malaysia near the Dannok border in Sadao, Songkhla, here are some essential tips to ensure a smooth journey:
Dannok Border Operating
• Malaysia side: Open from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM. • Thai side: Open from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Although the border stays open late, it's wise to arrive a bit early as the lines can get long during peak times.
Prepare Cash Make sure to have Malaysian Ringgit on hand for shopping and various purchases in Malaysia. While many shops near the border offer currency exchange, it’s more convenient to exchange money in Thailand to save time during your trip.
Grab Breakfast in Dannok
Start your day with breakfast in Dannok before heading into Malaysia. With the border area bustling in the morning, it’s best to fill up before the queues start. At 8:00 AM, we stopped by AKIKO'S TEA, not far from our hotel, where the coffee is exceptionally tasty—a perfect start to the day. After coffee, we enjoyed some delicious duck noodles and congee at a local noodle shop, leaving us satisfied and ready to continue our journey at 9:00 AM. Remember to have your passport ready for a smooth entry into Malaysia!
Enter Bukit Kayu Hitam
Upon crossing the border into Malaysia, our first stop was Bukit Kayu Hitam. Thinking of heading back to Thailand by evening, we decided to shop first at The Zon Duty Free Complex, located near the Sadao border. This duty-free shopping center offers a variety of tax-free goods ranging from cosmetics to perfumes and alcoholic beverages. It’s a highlight of Bukit Kayu Hitam, where you can find gifts for loved ones or personal treats. By 2:00 PM, our car was packed, and we were ready to move on. Additional info: The Zon Duty Free Complex closes at 10:00 PM.
Today’s Main Destination: Alor Setar
Today’s highlight is Alor Setar, a city brimming with charm and attractions. The drive from Bukit Kayu Hitam to Alor Setar is comfortable, covering about 50 kilometers, which takes about an hour by car. Alor Setar is packed with places worth visiting, from historical sites to large shopping malls
and local markets offering native goods and delicious foods. If traveling with family, consider stopping at Fantasia Aquapark Fun-tastik—a water park with various fun rides perfect for family enjoyment.
Alor Setar’s Top 8 Must-Visit Places
Here are the top 8 must-visit places in Alor Setar
1. Alor Setar Tower - A telecommunications tower, the third tallest in Malaysia, offering a panoramic view of the city from its viewing deck. 2. Gunung Keriang - A 250-million-year-old limestone hill, ideal for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers. 8. Though we intended to visit all eight locations, we only managed the first four due to the evening setting in and needing to return to Thailand. We ended our day at Aman Central, shopping until our car was full. At 1:00 AM, we left Alor Setar, crossed back into Thailand at the Dannok border, and spent a night in Hat Yai. The next morning, we headed to the airport, ready to return to Bangkok. Things to Know About the Malaysian Border Pass
Traveling to Malaysia? Aside from using a passport for a stay of up to 30 days, many Thais prefer to use a “Malaysian Border Pass” to avoid the hassle of getting a passport. If you don’t travel abroad often and want to save on passport fees, here’s what you need to know about the Border Pass.
What is a Malaysian Border Pass?
A Border Pass is a travel document used for land travel to neighboring countries like Malaysia by car, bus, or train. It serves as an alternative to a regular passport, allowing you to stay in specified areas for a limited time. The Border Pass is for Thai citizens who want to visit Malaysia for various reasons, such as tourism, visiting relatives, or business. To be eligible, you must be a Thai citizen or have lived in the border area for at least one year. The Border Pass is valid for one year from the date of issue.
Documents Needed and Where You Can Go
To get a Malaysian Border Pass, simply present your ID card at the immigration office in one of the following provinces: Songkhla, Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani, or Satun. You can apply online, but if you choose the paper application, you’ll also need a passport-sized photo.
With a Border Pass, you can enter Malaysia from the immigration checkpoints in these provinces and stay for up to 30 days. There’s no need to register for Malaysia’s Digital Arrival Card (MDAC). However, you can only travel within the states of Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, and the Hulu Perak district of Perak. Traveling beyond these areas, such as to Penang or Kuala Lumpur, is illegal and punishable by a fine of up to 10,000 ringgit (about 77,000 baht), imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both, and up to 6 strokes of the cane.
Knowing this, if you plan to use a Malaysian Border Pass for land travel, make sure to follow the legal guidelines to avoid penalties and a potential ban from entering Malaysia in the future.

Traveling to Malaysia in 2024: What You Need to Know
Planning a trip to Malaysia in 2024? Whether you're traveling by plane, train, or car, there are specific requirements set by both governments that you need to follow. Here’s a clear guide to help you avoid any legal issues and ensure a smooth journey.
Do You Need a Visa to Enter Malaysia in 2024?
If you're traveling to Malaysia for tourism in 2024, you don’t need a tourist visa. Simply use your passport, which must be valid for at least 6 months, to pass through immigration. However, you must register for Malaysia’s Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) at least 3 days in advance. You can stay in Malaysia for up to 30 days without a visa.
Documents Required for Malaysian Immigration
No matter how you travel to Malaysia (by plane, train, or car), be prepared to show these documents at immigration:
• Reservation details of your accommodation in Malaysia. • Return tickets for your flight, train, or bus. • Your travel itinerary. • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay in Malaysia.
Having all these documents ready will help ensure a smooth entry process and reduce the risk of being sent back.
Staying Beyond 30 Days
Once you pass through Malaysian immigration and get a stamp in your passport, you’re allowed to stay for the specified period. Staying beyond this period without proper authorization is illegal and can result in a fine of up to 10,000 ringgit (about 77,000 baht),imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both. To avoid these penalties, make sure you leave Malaysia before your permitted stay expires. If you need to extend your stay, you must visit the Malaysian immigration office to pay a fine and obtain a Special Pass before you can return to Thailand.
Travel Tips
For those planning to visit Malaysia in 2024 without a visa, remember you can stay for up to 30 days per visit. If you wish to re-enter Malaysia, you need to return to Thailand and get a new entry stamp. You can cross the border into Malaysia by land no more than twice per calendar year. Guide to Choosing a Hotel in Dannok: How to Find the Perfect Place
Hi everyone! If you're looking for a place to stay in Dannok, today's article will guide you on what to consider when choosing a hotel. Our topic is “Guide to Choosing a Hotel in Dannok: How to Find the Perfect Place.” We'll take you through each step, from checking the location to comparing prices and amenities. Plus, we'll recommend some hotels for those who are looking. Let's get started!
Location First, let's talk about the location of the hotel. The location is crucial as it affects your convenience during travel. Before choosing a hotel, you need to determine the purpose of your trip. For example, if you're doing a passport run, you should pick a hotel near the Dannok border. Here are some key factors to consider:
Close to Convenience Stores: It's important to choose a hotel near convenience stores, so you can easily access essential items or snacks, whether it's something you forgot to bring, snacks, or even emergency medicine.
Access to Public Transportation: If you don't have a car, choose a hotel with easy access to public transportation like local buses, vans, or free hotel shuttles. Having various transportation options will make it easier to get around the city.
Safety for Solo Female Travelers: Safety is paramount, especially for solo female travelers. Choose a hotel not too far from the city center to reduce risks and ensure a sense of security. Hotels in busy, well-lit areas at night can help guests feel more comfortable.
Parking for Those Traveling by Car: If you're driving, having hotel parking is essential. Make sure to ask about parking facilities before booking.
Near Tourist Attractions: If your main purpose is tourism, choose a hotel close to the attractions you want to visit. This will save time and travel costs, giving you more time to explore and enjoy.
Price and Value After considering the location, let's look at the price and value of the hotel. Don’t choose an expensive hotel without considering the amenities and services offered. Compare prices with other hotels in the same range to ensure you're getting good value. Here are some tips to get the best deals:
Ask About Promotions and Special Discounts: Hotels often have special discounts, so always inquire about them.
Compare Direct Booking with Online Platforms: Sometimes booking directly with the hotel is cheaper, and sometimes platforms like Agoda, Trip, or Traveloka offer better deals.
Check Multiple Platforms and Look for Coupons: If booking through a platform, compare several platforms and look for discount coupons.
Check the Hotel’s Facebook Page: Hotels often announce promotions on their social media pages.
Room Types and Sizes
Choosing the right room type for the number of people traveling with you is very important. Hotels usually offer various room types such as single rooms, double rooms, and family rooms. Here are some examples:
For Couples: Choose a King Bed room for comfort and privacy.
For Solo Travelers: A King Bed room can provide extra space and comfort.
For Couples with a Small Child: Choose a King Bed room and request an extra bed, or opt for a family room.
For Groups of Friends (6 people): Consider booking three double rooms or two rooms with extra beds, depending on the hotel’s policy on extra beds.
In-Room Amenities
Check the in-room amenities, which should include basics like air conditioning and a water heater. Also, consider other essential items like furniture and cleanliness to ensure a comfortable stay.
Hotel Recommendation: Satit Grand View Hotel We recommend Satit Grand View Hotel for those doing a passport run or looking for a place to stay before heading to Malaysia. The hotel is less than 10 minutes from the border and offers free shuttle service. It’s located in town, close to convenience stores, with a variety of room types at reasonable prices.
