Day 31 | Eepy
Gt July Prompt List
David may or may not have inadvertently adopted a leviathan. What could possibly go wrong?
Spoilers: For the game Subnautica
Warnings: Cursing. Mentions of death and violence
________________________
David realized he earned a shadow.
There’s been a few ever since he got stranded on an uncharted ocean planet. Most of them were predators debating if he was vulnerable and worth the effort. This one, however, is actively staying out of sight, hasn’t once tried to approach to test his reaction time.
No, the only reason he noticed this particular shadow is because his tools got displaced much too often to blame it on absentmindedness. Things also started to appear, like creepvine seeds and titanium, random items waiting patiently next to a waterproof locker he set up to collect supplies.
Now, a few things. Before the Aurora crashed and he got into this situation, David dealt with his fair share of shadows, multiple of which attempted to be ‘helpful’. Especially due to his position as director of building the phasegate, people would always assume that he’d appreciate it if they got him things he needed or clean up his workstation for him.
They always got him the wrong things, though. Always put away something that he was about to reach for. If he wanted an assistant, he would’ve gotten one, but he hasn’t been able to find a single person who knows how to do the job right. Which makes shadows much like this one something that only triggers annoyance.
Pair that with the fact everything on this planet has been trying to kill him, and it just wracks it up to a new level he didn’t know was possible.
David sends a glare at the quartz sitting on a rock he had deployed the locker near. Takes note at the fact the mineral had replaced his scanner. Turning in a circle, he looks around for a literal shadow, any movement that can hint at what exactly could be following him while messing with his things.
He doesn’t find anything except for metal glinting in the sunlight, realizing his scanner had just been tossed to the side. Confident whatever had decided to mess with his valuable items, he swims over to it. Dutifully checks it over to find no marks on it. Not a single scratch or dent.
There’s nothing. No indication a stalker had snapped it up between teeth. It’s hard to believe something like a peeper had quickly swam by and knocked it into the open water. So what exactly has been grabbing his tools? And why is it leaving him seemingly random items?
Any other time, he’d want an answer strictly based on principle. Considering the potential danger he could be in with an unknown creature managing to get so close without him knowing, he needs to figure out what it is to ensure he doesn’t end up dead.
Clipping the scanner to his belt, David leaves the quartz and carefully pulls the locker behind him toward the lifepod. It’s a methodic transferring materials into his pack and carrying them into the pod to store them or fabricate into items. One of which he finally was able to craft a breather.
How is he supposed to plan-?
David freezes at the sight before him, hand still on the last rung. In front of him, only a few feet away and delicately balancing a quartz on the floating locker, is a kid. At least, what seems to be a kid. From the chest up, they look like a teenager, with red hair that sways in the current.
It’s not human, though. Not with the long blue tail with a streak of red. Not with the gills on its neck. Not with the low, grumbling sounds it softly emits.
He hasn’t seen anything like this. Both the creature, and the complete disregard for such valuable items needed for his survival.
“Hey!”
The shout erupted before he could stop the anger from serging, the response much too quick and habitual for him to have even a second to think twice before it was already done.
Good news, he’s not automatically attacked, the creature more startled than anything. Bad news, it almost immediately focuses on him after catching the rock it was attempting to balance when it almost dropped it from the initial scare
David tenses, expecting it to lunge the moment it realizes just how vulnerable he is with his only weapon currently tucked away. It hesitates, seems like it’s preparing to make a move, then looks down at the quartz in hand. Suddenly, it holds out the quartz as it makes the most horrific and inhuman noises in existence. Then it goes still as it watches him with pitch black eyes that stare into his soul.
…what the hell?
He stares for a moment. Waits for it to lose patience and stop pretending it’s ‘friendly’. But the longer they watch each other, it becomes clear it won’t move until he does.
The only issue is he isn’t going anywhere near that thing. He’s gathered that this is the reason why tools have been swapped out for inferior items, but he is yet to have a reason for such a transaction. What’s the motive? Is it just messing with him?
The only things he knows is it doesn’t respect him, and it can attack the moment he looks away.
The creature gives a pitiful look. Extends the quartz out with horrific mumbles.
“What?” David demands, unable to hell himself.
“At?” the creature chokes out.
Is it making fun of him? “What do you want?”
It blinks like there’s not a single intelligent thought. Then, it carefully balances the rock on top of the locker like it was trying to do before, this time succeeding.
With that it slowly backs away. Sends the biggest puppy eyes David has ever seen with a gesture toward the quartz.
“Is this some kind of peace offering?” he demands. “Or a declaration of war?”
It’s not human, but there’s no denying the very hopeful gleam in its soulless eyes. After waiting another moment, David carefully swims to the locker, a hand hovering near his knife to quickly grab if needed. Nothing happens, and he’s able to grab the rock without issue.
The creature beams at him as its voice sends a chill down his spine. At least he isn’t dead.
David eyes the quartz in his hand warily, unsure what he just agreed to. What he just invited. He’s hoping this just means the creature won’t attack him anytime soon. He knows this will be something he deeply regrets.
Speaking of regrets, the creature whips around and darts away, the tail powerful enough to send the locker rocking in its wake. And considering the fact it will most definitely be coming back, David has no choice but to wait, or else turn his back to an unknown and unsettling new discovery.
Sure enough, it comes back, this time holding another quartz.
That’s when David realizes he fucked up. “No, I don’t want you here. Go home, shoo, leave me alone.”
“Alone!” it mocks. And then it yawns just to rub it in.
David makes a dramatic motion with his arms, physically crossing out the impression its not only allowed to stay, but help him. “Go away. You’re not welcome here. Go somewhere else, anywhere else. You’re not allowed to even sleep here, understood?”
“Eepy,” it mumbles, and he has a feeling it’s intentionally saying the words wrong. Something finally seems to click though, prompting the creature to set the new rock down and swim off.
It doesn’t go far. It finds a coral tube not one full meter away. Curls up in the large opening in a way where it faces him. Stares up with wide eyes that begin to get longer and longer blinks with every one.
Isn’t that just wonderful? Isn’t of stopping something dangerous from ripping his throat out, he inadvertently earned its complete and utter trust.
Briefly, David finds his hand resting on the handle of his knife. Only for a moment as he contemplates if it’s better to let it assume it’s welcome here, or if he should chase it out.
Those beady eyes closing without a single flutter and the slow rise and fall of its chest has him deciding to deal with it tomorrow. For now, he needs to finish putting everything he has in the lifepod and going out to collect samples.
Hopefully the creature will leave when it wakes up, and he will never see it ever again. Purposefully stays ignorant to the fact nothing is ever that easy.

Playing subnautica again and struggling a lil bc I set rules that I wouldn't panic-cheat w console commands this time
so base building has been a lil slow but I'm having fun!! I thought it was high enough to not have a problem with a tube I wanted to build to my bedroom so I just stacked it on top like a lil attic instead
Also, I found a time capsule!!! There was a water filtration suit inside which is a massive boon for me bc I struggle keeping enough water, not so much with food
#I forgot the propulsion canon when i went to the aurora but ive gotten in via platforming before so nbd its not like i would be returning#so i didnt feel like making it anyways since i never use it after#i was so pleased to find the time capsule since i play on ps4 so theyre much fewer and farther between than on like. steam#i need a scanner room but i dont know if i want it to be connected to the main base or slightly separate#bc i also need to make a room for the alien containment chamber to hatch all the eggs ive been collecting#rp wise it would make sense as well for me to build a second moonpool when i make the prawn suit but#there's not really a benefit in terms only of gameplay bc usually ill just park one of them outside instead#subnautica

i think what rubs me the wrong way about totk the more i play it is the fact that the game actively encourages a completionist playstyle (esp in comparison to botw) even though playing it in that way is absolutely a miserable experience
#like the game is really fun if youre just fucking around doing whatever you want#but for some reason the devs were like 'hmm what if we gave the players some side quests & objectives that are literal checklists'#like oh you want the froggy armor? do every single stable quest#or the quest that has you finding every well#or that one npc that literally TELLS you to get every single frog gem like. why#imagine if hestu told you to find every korok seed it would be so shit#and yet somehow they do that with other things for literally no fucking reason#or the DRAGON GRINDING for armor upgrades holy fuck thats actually hot garbage#i literally looked up how to do item duping specifically for that bc fuck that#major parts of this game just straight up dont respect the players time#i like cant figure out why its this way?? like it feels like gameplay padding#it just sucks bc there are so many things i love abt the game but then theres shit like this#& also the terrible UI and the terrible controls and the terrible combat#and its just like. in botw i didnt mind that bc it was a new game#but they seriously couldnt fix any of that stuff for the sequel?#just copy pasted it like 'eh this is good! who cares'#well the UI has some improvements but it also has some steps back so really its a net zero#really this is just reminding me how much i loved subnautica and how much id rather be playing that again which is. hm

so i do really like the current au for the Drama, because it is Exquisitely pain causing for both ingo and emmet, but i also am very drawn to like. a second separate au where the whole pla cast are crater survivors of various wrecks, banded together and forming a sort of makeshift society. i think there's a lot of potential specifically in the survey corps' adapted role being to study kharaa and develop a cure. the only weird thing abt that is it's dubious that there were That many crashes that That many people survived but. we can handwave it idk
#the nemesis speaks#subnautica au#swift plays subnautica#also the fact that kharaa doesn't appear to... directly kill things#so much as it does fuck up their genetics and hinder their immune system#but You The Player can't die of kharaa and neither can anything infected that you put in a tank#which ik is for gameplay reasons like. if you died after a certain ingame time no matter what that would suck#but my point is you could exploit that in This au to explain why everyone's still alive#despite their arrivals probably being spread out over several years#pokefic pitch

I've been thinking about if they released a Pokemon game themed around every type, and what they would be like.
Ghost: Most obvious, something like Luigi's Mansion. Very cute, spooky adventure in a big haunted house. Prominently features references to youkai and ghosts like Toilet Hanako.
Psychic: By contrast, the psychic game is actually sci-fi horror (as much as a Pokemon game could get by with it). Lavender Town vibes, would heavily feature Alakazam and Hypno.
Water: Epic underwater survival game like Subnautica.
Fighting: A martial arts story like a Jackie Chan movie, though probably more like Kung Fu Panda. All the characters are fighting-type Pokemon. Main character is a Mankey as a nod to Journey to the West.
Flying: Set on a flying island like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Dark: Another horror game, with a darkness-based sanity mechanic like Darkest Dungeon or Amnesia: The Dark Descent. (Though, probably a stat other than sanity.)
Fairy: A medieval fantasy RPG with a story evocative of old stories dealing with the fae.
Ground: Set deep underground, a cave exploration game.
Rock: Set on another planet/dimension, about mining strange alien mineral formations. Your choice whether the Pokemon were brought along, or somehow already there.
Steel: Pokemon meets gundam!
Electric: Expanding on the teleporter incident with Bill in the first game, following a series of teleporter fusion mishaps and figuring out how to fix them. Gameplay in the form of engineering puzzles.
Normal: A medical game where you work in a Pokemon Center doing surgery on Pokemon. Obviously heavily featuring Chansey.
Fire: A traveling circus act with acrobatics using the elaborate fire displays that fire-type Pokemon can make. The gameplay mechanic is both navigating the fire-based obstacle courses, and designing them for maximum style to garner approval from the audience.
Ice: A platformer where you make ice to proceed, and can trap your enemies in ice.
Grass: A first-person RPG set in a jungle, Jumanji vibes. You play a botanist trying to find a rare flower.
Poison: A Thief-like game where you sneak around and poison assassination targets in the most kid-friendly way possible. Possibly you play as a member of Team Rocket.
Dragon: Another medieval fantasy RPG, fairly typical DnD fare.
Bug: Saving my favorite type for last! A species identification game, featuring real bugs as well as Pokemon.

The Subnautica of other fears
Subnautica is a game infamous for it's almost all ocean planet, underwater worldbuilding, and deep sea gameplay. It's also the bane of all thalassaphobia peeps.
So here's the subnautica of other phobias
Claustrophobia Fear of Tight/Cramped Spaces - The Forest Series : After a plane crash leaves you stranded in a strange forests, something increasingly becomes... wrong. The caves around don't help.
Scopophobia Fear of being watched or the center of attention - Brighter Day : A weirdcore horror game where something is definitely watching you and definitely following you.
Entomophobia/Arachnophobia - Grounded : You play a group of kids who are stuck in a "honey I shrunk the kids" incident. They are forced to venture across their yard, and survive the various common insects around.
Megalophobia Fear of very very very big things - The Utility Room : An experience. More of an experience then a game and fever dreamish, worth it, and mysterious all the way. It's almost as if the universe accidentally left one strange dev room behind.
Nyctophobia Fear of darkness - Amnesia: The Bunker (from the Amnesia series) : It's a first-person survival horror. You play a French man trapped in a bunker during WW1, while being hunted by something inside its darkness.
Autophobia Fear of being/feeling alone - Firewatch : You work in a national park in order to watch out for fires. Traveling across the Wyoming wilderness takes a complicated turn.
Hemophobia Fear of blood or bleeding - Iron Lung : What awaits you in the deep of a strange moon. Trapped in a submarine you have no choice but to find out.
Amaxophobia Fear of car accidents or being run over - Decimate Drive : After freeing yourself from a kidnapping, the world you wake up to is full of hostile cars.
Final Boss Games:
Lethal Company
Fun with friends :D
Genre: Indie Comedy Horror
Takes place on alien planets in outerspace
It's multiplayer, and very fun, but as soon as it hits the fan the sound design works hard to immerse you in the sudden loneliness. The games sound design is one the major players of Lethal Company's fear. As soon as a friend walks away the proximity chat teaches you just how separated you now are.
Before you know it you have had something unfriendly following behind you, and finally finding the silhouette of a friend in the dark you are betrayed by the creatures of the Lethal Company universe.
Fear of Darkness
Fear of Loneliness
Fear of Being Watched
Fear of Outerspace
The Metro Series
Genre: Survival Horror Shooter
You play the beautiful and amazing Artyom Chynornyj in the post-apocalyptic world of Metro. Developed by Ukrainians and based off the Russian book series + Polish fanon writing community.
The world of Metro is unfair and unforgiving, full of mutated creatures, and the leftover souls that the destruction of humanity left in it's wake. Crawl across the underground of Russian cities, or panic across the even more dangerous world of the destroyed above.
Fear of Darkness
Fear of Wild Animals
Fear of Deep Water
Fear of Ghost/The Supernatural
Fear of Insects/Spider
Fear of Heights
Fear of Dead Bodies
Fear of the Cold
No Man's Sky
The scariest game I've ever played. I don't know why, but this game freaks me out. I know the picture I chose was harmless, but I did that on purpose.
This game is beautiful, but don't let that fool ya. This world will leave you no hesitation lost in the unpredictable randomly generated horrors of space. From planet that are all water, to colossus creatures you see for only a split second, to the infinite colorless expanse of space.
Megalphobes and astrophobes, this is your subnautica
Fear of Outerspace
Fear of Darkness
Fear of Cramped Spaces
Fear of the Unknown
Fear of Very Very Very Big Things
Fear of Deep Water
Fear of Loneliness
Fear of Caves
Fear of the Supernatural
