Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhou: death to both heteronormativity and the rich, polyamory, scary fmc, mech suits, possibly lesbians in the sequel? Unfortunately is sci-fi, but it’s a sci-fi retelling of Chinese history and it’s very different from other sci-fi books I’ve read.

Dark Rise - The first sixty percent of the book is kind of a generic light vs dark fantasy but with really good characters, then the last fourth percent is the most insane thing I’ve ever tread. Dark fantasy.

The Raven Cycle, Maggie Steifvater - Urban fantasy about the worst group of bi-curious people you’ve ever met going on adventures in Virginia together. There’s a ghost and a variety of magical people.

The Deep Dark, Molly Knox Ostertag - Graphic novel, kind of urban fantasy, trans femme bisexual love interest and a butch (lesbian??) mc. Mostly Latine characters, really good art and story.

The Subearer Trials, Aiden Thomas - Transmasc mc, mlm fantasy based on Mayan mythology (I’m pretty sure). The second book is coming out soon, and if you like it you should also check out Cemetery Boys by the same author!

Legendborn, Tracy Deonn - Actually one of the most phenomenal plots ever, canonically pan side character, nonbinary background character. Has a lot of magic, both African culture-based and inspired by Arthurian legends.

I am in a bookstore with a gift card for 1 book and I’m seized with indecision

Please recommend me a fantasy book, preferably one that is…

Queer in some capacity. I don’t care if it’s mlm, wlw, has trans characters, has polyamory, or all of the above! But some manner of queerness should be present in the book.

A romance that is ship-worthy.

High fantasy. This can mean traditional Lotr/DnD type high fantasy or steampunk or something else vaguely inspired by some historical period. Urban fantasy is good, too. Sci-fi is a no-go.

Not too fluffy, not too angsty, not too risque… but a good balance of all three, por favor!

Examples of books I’ve really, really enjoyed:

The Books of the Raksura series by Martha Wells

The Green Creek novel series by TJ Klune

That Inevitable Victorian Thing by E.K. Johnston

Other things that are a plus:

Dragons, elves, vampires, or some other fantasy race, esp if the love interest is one of the above

Characters that are not described in such a way that they sound like conventionally attractive celebrities, aka men with “rippling” muscles and 6-pack abs, or women with “curves in all the right places”

A cool magic system

No “magic is bad, actually” revelation or lessons about the MC having to outgrow fantasy

A guy who fits the trickster archetype, ambiguous relationship with gender included

A woman who starts off mean and snotty and full of herself, and ends up still mean and snotty and full of herself, but instead she uses her queen bee status for good instead of evil

put a big watermark on your gifs and lets see if they still dare steal it. (idk maybe they still will, i just remembered seeing some re-posting subears' gifs even though there was an obvious watermark.)

Oh there were watermarks on half the gifs I saw reposted by them so it doesn't stop them. Luckily my gifs are usually pretty obvious haha (also If anyone watermarks their gifs pls advise on what font and etc since if I ever get motivated I may do so)
