Tamsyn Muir's writing beyond The Locked Tomb
Y'all, turns out there's lots of imagery and themes in TLT that Muir was already playing with in her earlier fiction. A lot of it is easily available online, in which case I'll link to it. (The short stories that aren't can also be easily read if googled, to be quite honest—that's how I read The Deepwater Bride and Why the Mermaids Left Boralus). • The House That Made the Sixteen Loops of Time (2011)
5K. Short sort-of-cozy romance (?) with (you guessed it) a time travel loop. Explores a very queer potential relationship. CamPal enjoyers might find a similar sweetness.
• The Magician's Apprentice (2012, Lightspeed Magazine)
5K. This is the one that stopped me dead on my tracks. It features an older, male mentor figure called John (a “very ordinary man” with “dark eyes”) who introduces the young, female main character to magic that has a terrible cost—and to literature such as Lolita. This excellent post by @familyabolisher does an incredible job of analyzing the very deliberate intertextual links between TLT and Lolita.
• The Woman in the Hill (2015, Lightspeed Magazine, originally for Dreams From the Witch House anthology of Lovecraftian horror by women)
4K. Possibly my favorite! It's a straightforward Lovecraftian horror, centered on the image of the woman (is it human though?) trapped in an unnatural pool inside a cursed cave. Chain imagery too. It does something different from Alecto, mind, but you can see links, ways of playing with facets of a strong central image. It's fun to consider how reliable the two narrators are. Here's an analysis and afterthought from Reactor Mag.
• Chew (2013) 4K. Zombie abuse and cannibalistic revenge story ft. an uncanny woman revenant, told from the eyes of a traumatized German boy. I was strongly reminded of Harrow's conversations with the Body. Tamsyn gave an interview on the themes and her intentions. Interesting to read in light of Alecto, I think, although I don't think she's going the same route in TLT: “the idea of post-war rebuilding connecting to rebuilding the body of the zombie; a Frankenstein who once rebuilt doesn’t act as planned or desired. […] I love cannibalism […] it’s innately spiritual […] any afterlife she goes to, he’s going too.”
• Apothecia (2014, published on Tumblr and tapas.io)
Short webcomic where an alien monster tries to corrupt the ruthless human girl who holds it captive. Musings on responsibility and murder, mention of child abuse. The alien's speech patterns remind me of a Resurrection Beast. You get wonderful dialogue like “Murder is a profession. Job. Employment, you tiny leg dog. There you are, walking along. Walk walk walk. Now you are a walker. Good job. Special child. Murder is like this.” Art by Shelby Cragg.
• The Deepwater Bride (2015, Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine)
The opening line is: “In the time of our crawling Night Lord's ascendancy, foretold by exodus of starlight into his sucking astral wounds, I turned sixteen and received Barbie's Dream Car.” Need I say more? Extremely fun. A novelette where a young queer girl from a clairvoyant family struggles with an apocalyptic event while being annoyed by another very plucky girl. Lots of descriptions with nerdy marine zoology terms. Close in tone to Gideon. In the background, someone dies EXACTLY like that one death at the end of Gideon, which makes me wonder what happened to make Tamsyn interested in this particular image. I also liked that Tamsyn is aware of Nightwish. No link, but you'll get a PDF immediately if you Google.
• Union (2015, Clarkesworld Magazine)
5.5K. Very weird, extremely Kiwi story about a town that gets sent lab-grown wives by the government, but they're not made the usual way so they're Weird and people have feelings about it. Fascinating and eerie description of non-human (in some people's eyes, sub-human) women (?) who cannot be observed to have recognizable feelings or thoughts, yet have some sort of inner life. Quite touching, very uncanny.
• Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower (2020)
Short novel (~200 pages). Very funny. I was reminded of Coronabeth because the whole plot is “princess finds herself branching out into decidedly non-princess-like activities”, but other than that—this is a fairytale for adults about people who make eachother worse. No particular links to TLT but a very fun read with some gut punches. Extremely Tamsyn through and through, what with the dubious morality and all.
• Why the Mermaids Left Boralus (2021, in Folk & Fairy Tales of Azeroth by Blizzard Entertainment)
Set in the World of Warcraft universe. Haven't read this one yet, will report back lmao. As with The Deepwater Bride, no link but I easily found a PDF of the entire compilation. It's illustrated!
• Undercover (2022, from Into Shadow, Amazon Original Collection)
Haven't read it either. Will edit once I do.

"The capacity for evil is but one ingredient in the human soul."
Women are rejoicing in the streets. Authoritarian state media is on high alert. It's the after hours sensation sweeping the nation, Late Night Togashiposting. The 100 sub spectacular edition. This time we're not tangentially tying it to potential references that drifted into One Piece down the line. At least not beyond just talking about Kurama which means illustrating squarely where there is an open final spot on the Straw Hat crew. This time it's more about the Chapter Black. Because the world has been making me think of it.
The actual tape, the MacGuffin of the titular saga. If you're unfamiliar, the villain Sensui manipulated his allied psychics with it. It's a VHS tape, but because YuYu Hakusho was trying to be modern in a way that ended up making it an awesome 90s period piece in hindsight it's a magic Spirit World VHS tape. I swear this man has a fascination with them. Imagine the ultimate snuff film, back in the day this was the equivalent of urban legends about horrific videos online. Chapter Black is a record of the most haness human acts. Make no mistake, Togashi had balls here. We call out shit that is clearly referencing the Holocaust and bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki. In an era where you don't get that on point in mainstream manga.
Tumblr media
Believe it or not this is one of the cheerier images. We learn of the tape through a defector, Mitarai or "Seaman." A bullied kid who cracked after seeing Chapter Black. Recall Sensui's whole thing is being a straight-up groomer to some of his followers. His breakdown is some powerful stuff, but I always liked how hero Yusuke was able to shrug it off. Remarking he sees it everyday on the 6 o'clock news but never feels it's a reason to give in. Prompting the Kurama quote from the start here. I always loved the wrinkle of him lowkey being seduced by the appeal of it. The anime having a bigger group for the scene adds so much. Keiko breaking at hearing some of the things, Genkai quietly fuming the entire time...YuYu Hakusho really is an oddball where the manga gave way to a better anime that got so much better dubbed in English that continues to age like the finest wine.
I don't know if any story beat encapsulates this better than the simplicity of the Chapter Black tape. It's become one of the most prescient parts of the series. In a world where you can pick any boogeyman and find a community of people just stewing in hatred towards it, marinating in a steady drip of laser-guided examples one VHS compilation almost sounds quaint.
Where Togashi really shines here though is how it affects people differently. I love how Mitarai is the one trying to justify it by functionally calling Yusuke privileged. While it's true Urameshi didn't grow up in a warzone he was clearly the one of the pair who had a rougher life and also the one who just didn't get how it'd warp someone. Because deep down Seaman wanted revenge, the tape was nurturing something dark that was already there. Villains never want to think of themselves as such. It's so real, so raw. So relevant to today.

Do you think Jonathan Hickman has a good characterization of Namor and Doctor Doom?
Short answer: Not really & maybe.
Long answer: Not really, for Namor. Hickman's Namor is very much a product of his story line, he's Namor is a character pushed to the very edge of his limits, a character who's desperate, who's throwing away any honor he has left to ensure the survival of his people. While I do think that Namor would do that, and its very in character for him to do so, I also think that Hickman's Namor is rooted in characterization taken from Sub-Mariner (2007) and Avengers vs X-Men, Phoenix King Namor, and not the Namor that's been around for decades, its a very modern take on Namor and not one that I think encompasses the full range of his character. Don't get me wrong, his Namor is very enjoyable, he's like the biggest bitch and I love it, but I have issues with Hickman's Namor and more accurately with how people after Hickman have stuck to using that characterization without all the stress the character was under. Hickman uses Namor and T'Challa's B plot to keep things moving along and parallel his A plot between Doctor Doom and Reed Richards. Two men who have hurt each other in the past still locked in that hate/love relationship with the weight of the world (s) on their shoulders. So while I enjoy his Namor in the moment, when taken against the backdrop of the greater characterization of the character I think it was the final nail in the coffin of Namor's modern and current characterization and I don't think fans will ever get the Noble Sub-Mariner of the late 60s-90s back. Which is fine because Namor as a character is very flowing and adaptable so long as his core traits are still there. I feel Hickman really pushes Namor to the edge and it was very good for me to enjoy Namor's unraveling. I think my biggest complaint about Hickman is having him bow to Proxmia Midnight, and then use them to do his dirty work, like that is very Un-Namor like, he would never bow to anyone and never let anyone do stuff that he feels is his duty to complete, especially revenge.
I say maybe for Doctor Doom because I always feel unsure when it comes to talking about Doom's character as I haven't read everything about him, but I have read a fair amount of his character to say that I love a lot of what Hickman does with Victor, the God Emperor Doom was a great story line for the character and his and Reed's interactions are so great but I honestly don't think Victor likes Susan in any romantic or sexual way so I really don't think he would have been with her. Idk I just feel sometimes Hickman has to throw in the heterosexual side thing in his works. Hickman was right to have Doom and Reed be the entire connecting thread of the series and honestly I do think Hickman writes a great Victor, and I love that he remembered that Kristoff is Victor's son and included him. I can say that I feel Hickman's Doom and Namor are great for the story he writes for them but I have more complaints about how it affected Namor after the fact. Current writers only ever refer back to Hickman's work and never get other sides of Namor's character. But I suppose that's true of many characters written today in comics, however I do like to complain.

Team 3 (Angel, Iceman, Gargoyle, Man-Thing and Namor): When the dream demon ambushed Namor, he sent him to a strange planet with a rocky surface and a deadly sea of fire with only very tiny rivers dotting the far flung countryside. It is a struggle to stay alive for the Sub-Mariner, being so far from the life giving sea. It becomes a quest of endurance as he must go from the rocky cliffs and fiery oceans of this land to their one lush, jungle paradise and it's waters of life, a paradise at least a week or two away, if we're being generous.
Angel, Iceman, Gargoyle and the Man-Thing end up on this world too when the dream demon ambushes them in the swamp. By the time they get to this strange world, Namor is already nearly at his jungle destination, although he is about to fall into the trap of the mosntrous beast stalking those jungles. In any case, our quartet (Angel, Iceman, Gargoyle and Man-Thing set out for the jungle paradise too, but not before they have a nasty fight with a powerful fire demon who is the guardian of a giant volcano.
While on their quest, our strange quartet meet a nature spirit who has lost her way. She needs the team's help. Once, this land was home to a beautiful, verdant forest. But now, all that remains is rock and fire. Her beautiful Willow tree is gone. And the longer her tree is gone, the weaker and weaker she gets. She's nearly on the verge of fading away (just like all her fellow nature spirits did) by the time our quartet find her.
Willow is also able to warn them about the jungle to the north. It's a large trap. The strongest of all the monsters is located there: a giant shapeshifting beast with the power to shoot fire and acid. He's the reasons this whole world has fallen to pieces. Willow wants to go with the team to help them fight him, to get revenge for her fallen brethren.
Also, Willow and Man-Thing have a strange bond. Possibly because Willow is a nature spirit, she is able to touch the Man-Thing in a way few others can. But for the whole team, she is pretty much their guide to this strange new world.
Eventually, our strange group of five manage to make it to the jungle, where they're ambushed by the shapeshifting beast. Well, some are. Man-Thing and Willow narrowly escape. But Angel, Iceman and Gargoyle are captured and manage to meet up with Namor. While these four prisoners are busy escaping from the beasts giant nest, Willow is trying to find his weakness. She remembers a story she once heard from another nature spirit when she was just a sapling: about a shapeshifting beast defeated by a legendary warrior using nothing but sheer endurance and trickery. He tricked the beast into a cave, then sealed the cave shut behind him. There was no food in the cave, so the beast died of starvation.
Just as Willow remembers all this, the others show up. And together, they use their combined skills to defeat the beast. Man-Thing and Gargoyle will fight the beast and face all his blows with their heavy endurance, while Willow, Angel, Iceman and Namor lure him into a cave. Angel leads him all the way to the very back of the cave, where Iceman gets to finish him off with a powerful Icy Spear to the chest. Then (once Angel and Iceman have escaped the cave), Namor uses his mighty strength to create a rock slide which traps the injured beast's body inside the cave.
Now that they've beaten the beast, the dream demon's curse is ended. And all our heroes are driven back to Man-Thing's Swamp. The strange thing though: Willow came with them. Her connection to the Man-Thing (plus her world being the temporary creation of a demon) leads to her simply being sent to earth with the rest of them. She can finally go back to being a nature spirit, and not worrying about dying from the lack of connection to nature.

Fantastic Four Volume 1 Issue 4.
So this issue features the return of a Marvel Golden Age character, that being Namor the Sub-Mariner. He's a mutant, a human, an Atlantean, and the first hero to ever fly. Though he starts off his Silver Age debut as a villain. I was always curious as to why Marvel chose to do this, especially because later on he does become a hero. Though recently he's more of a neutral type of character. I've also come to notice a lot of water based heroes to this route. Coincidence maybe? Anyway on to our thrilling tale, and the return of the Sub-Mariner.
Alright so this issue is pretty fun. It takes place right after the events of the last issue with Johnny Storm leaving the Fantastic Four. Though I don't like that they blame the Thing for it I believe both are at fault here. Anyway they decide to start searching the entire city for the Human Torch with the Fantasticar. Though all of them fail except the Thing who finds him in his garage.
Johnny ends up fleeing from the Thing, due to him turning back into Ben Grimm. Honestly I feel bad for the guy, this tends to happen often to him, even later having Mister Fantastic make serums to help him turn back. Only for it to last a few measly minutes.
Well Johnny ends up staying at a very run down Men's Hotel. Where he finds a comic from the 1940s, which features, you guessed it, the Sub-Mariner. Then by sheer dumb luck guess who Johnny ends up running into at this shabby run down hotel. That's right, the Sub-Mariner. Johnny uses his flaming fingers to give him a hair cut, removing his long hair and beard. Then boom, classic Golden Age Sub-Mariner.
Anyway our other three heroes continue the search for Johnny, while he basically slips past them, well he slips past his sister. Then he takes Namor, and drops him into the Ocean. Which gives Namor back his memories and he then remembers that he is Namor the Sub-Mariner the legendary prince of the sea.
Namor then swims to what was once his undersea kingdom. Only to find it destroyed by humans radioactive weapons. I wonder if Godzilla was close by. Namor then swears his revenge and vows to destroy the surface world. Just a recap real quick that means, The Mole Man and his underground group wishes to destroy the surface, the Skulls from Space wish to conquer the Earth, and Miracle Man just wanted to have us fear him. Now Sub-Mariner and any ocean buddies also want to destroy the surface world. 616 earth cannot catch a break.
Anyway the Fantastic Four catch up with Johnny, and he tells them what all has happened. Sub-Mariner then summons a massive sea creature from the Depths known as Giganto to attack the surface world. The Fantastic Four attack only to learn that nothing can harm it from the outside, but what about inside. That's when they send in my man the Thing. They strap a nuke to his back and have him walk into Gigantos stomach to plant it and blow him up. What a Chad. Thing also battles some monsters while in Gigantos stomach so again he is without a doubt the best member of the team.
Well after Giganto dies, Namor resurfaces with his horn to summon another terrible monster in which Sue steals it from him. Though he instantly catches her, and she turns visible and Namor falls in love with her, and then she also finds him very attractive like he asks her to marry him and she genuinely thinks it over, and they first met seconds ago. You guys thought Disney was bad with it's quick love stories.
Well Namor then tries to steal Sue away beneath the Ocean, and none of the Fantastic Four can think of how to prevent this. Until Johnny uses his flying speed to create a whirlwind and transport Namor back into the Ocean without his horn. Like the horn just gets lost in the depths, and Namor "loses". Though the Fantastic Four swear if he returns he will have them to deal with.
Tumblr media
Alright so this comic is alright, I feel like I say that a lot. Namor is a really good addition to the Silver Age of comics. Just he's really depowered so that the Fantastic Four can win. Also I don't like the Sue, Namor, and Reed love triangle. It to me is probably the weaker love triangle within comics. Also this comic and the last one really make me not like Johnny Storm.
Anyway onto our character analysis for this comic.
Tumblr media
Alright my views on Mister Fantastic stay the same from the last issue. Though I don't know how he wouldn't have found Johnny with his superior intellect, but I'm also glad he didn't. He also doesn't do a whole lot this issue, again I'm not upset with this, I'm glad some other characters got to make the power play in this issue. So Reed buddy keep doing you.
Tumblr media
Sue, why, why are you like this? Like I don't dislike her, some of her scenes are funny, and would be something id definitely do if I had invisibility. Like she take a sip of a drink at a diner and everyone thinks the place is haunted these are the shenanigans I live for. Just why did you fall for Namor so quickly I don't understand.
Tumblr media
Johnny, I'm still not a big fan of you buddy. You kind of caused the problem this issue and didn't really solve it, although you did. Just I know you'll get better but honestly my opinion of Johnny has stayed in the lower regions like in the last issue.
Tumblr media
Thing, my man, the Goat. The more I get of you, the more you become my favorite member of this team. You strapped a Nuke to your back and walked into Gigantos belly. A true hero, and I'm sorry you keep changing from Ben to the Thing for basically a few seconds. I know your future is bright, keep being brilliant.
Tumblr media
Namor the Sub-Mariner, I actually really like this character. I think his introduction is very forced, but hey it's comics. Also I just like the design, the swimming speedo, the wings on his ankles, the pointy ears. All very nice, I just don't see what Sue sees in him. Take out the love triangle and he's a really good antagonist. Also you where robbed of tpk, but hey that's comics for ya.
Alright so next issue we will be introduced to one of the Fantastic Fours most notorious villains, and possibly the most notorious in all of Marvel Comics. Until next time.

Submariner Summer 37
Many felicitations unto thee, Namor Nation! We gather for #SubmarinerSummer read through part 37 for another great milestone in the history of our sea prince-a series all his own. Yes, we are finally reading Prince Namor, The Sub-Mariner #1! We are kicked off by a legendary cover
Tumblr media
And on the title page, Destiny gloats about killing Namor! How's *that* for a start to a series? Roy Thomas stays on scripts from Iron Man and Sub-Mariner #1, and we have John Buscema going all out on pencils. Frank Giacoia on inks and Sam Rosen on letters round out the team
Tumblr media
Though victorious, Destiny is still filled with hate, so he gloats that this is his second victory. He then uses his mind powers to set Namor's brain to go over his past, so that he will finally remember the lost amnesia memories that apparently hide the first defeat by Destiny
Tumblr media
As a plot device for a flashback issue, not the worst I've seen. So now, Oh ye faithful, thrill to the Silver Age retelling of Namor's origin. It begins with the US explorers led by Captain Leonard McKenzie causing (accidentally) a massive destruction and slaughter in Atlantis
Tumblr media
Emperor Thakorr tells his daughter, Princess Fen, to select warriors to investigate; she says yes, but decides to do it herself. She goes to the surface and among the US expedition; soon, she ends up marrying Captain McKenzie! Weeks later, Thakorr DOES send a war party
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They retrieve Fen and score some casualties on the Americans in the process, notably Captain McKenzie himself, or so Fen thinks, breaking her heart. But that brief love birthed Namor.
Fast forward to the 40s, and Namor rises to the surface, fighting war upon war
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though the wars ended, he fought still, both Atlanteans rivals like Byrrah and surface crime and enemies. Eventually, though, another destruction came to Atlantis seeming to repeat the one that led to Fen going to the surface. So Thakorr sends Namor to perform Fen's old mission
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this was not an accidental genocide by ignorant surfacers: it was Destiny with his Helmet of Power, killing and destroying just to test his abilities. He then uses them to mind control Namor, and forces him to see his Granfather and emperor, and his mother, die with Atlantis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So we finally see the cause of the destruction of "First Atlantis" that was alluded to way back in Submariner Summer part 30, covering TtA #96.
But Destiny's not done; he decides to turn Namor into his mind wiped pawn and sends him away while he hibernates one last time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So robbed of his mind and now in New York, Namor flails about a bit at first, before simply beginning to wander without identity or purpose. Y'all...this is nightmare fuel. What a godawful fate, and Destiny basically did it for kicks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is, of course, the state he's in when the Human Torch finds him in the classic Fantastic Four #4, which reintroduced Namor. So now we're basically back at the Silver Age, and Namor's memories are finally complete. This wakes him up from Flashback Land, where he's trapped
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ice melting on his body is the water he needs to recover his strength, and suffused with it he bursts free! And with that freedom, Namor plans to visit his wrath on the man called Destiny...and perhaps the entire surface. IMPERIUS REX!
Tumblr media
Going to be honest, if I had to relive all that trauma all at once and wasn't just broken into a sobbing heap, I could absolutely want to destroy the world too.
But as a reader, what can I say, this was a fun if extremely truncated ride through Namor's history to that point, with some new additions and revelations in the typical Roy Thomas retcon fashion. It focuses on some key events relevant to the greater story, arc but basically this #1 was Namor 101. 👨🏽‍🏫
But NEXT, we get back to then-current events as Namor starts his hunt for revenge against Destiny as we cover Sub-Mariner #2: Cry...TRITON!

Haha! Yeah, the Thing would decide that before they all die in space, he’s going to murder the Sub-Mariner in revenge. Who is, by the way, wearing an oxygen helmet he got from them.
But wait, something’s missing here. Thing says that the problem of rescue has been left up to him. Johnny tried, Reed tried, and yeah, that only leaves the Thing as the last member of the Fantastic Three, but what about the Sub-Mariner? He can still try, like I said.
Tumblr media
Who does Doom think is dead? He knows Reed just tried to grab his plane since he burnt his hands, but that wouldn’t kill him, and also, if he has oxygen, then presumably everyone else does too. And why call at all? Was he just so proud of that stupid joke that he had to make sure they heard it before they died?
Tumblr media
You can also fly. Can you not fly in space? Those tiny foot wings don’t need air to push off, right?

The Devil Always Tells The Truth (FICTOID)
The only way to kill his pain?  Destroy the universe.
Anything less risks his pain not going away even after death.
Even if consciousness and identity and memory vanished into nothingness, even if his very soul were obliterated, there remained the risk that some portion of him, some remnant, some scintilla of an iota of a ghost of a glimpse of a fragment of a sub-atomic particle would continue suffering and that he could not tolerate.
So to escape even the remotest chance of pain and humiliation, he summoned the greatest, most ferocious, most utterly horrendous demon from the deepest / darkest / dankest bowels of hell, the king of corruption, the epitome of evil:  Sydney.
The demon’s arrival set the pine needle forest floor ablaze.  “WHY HAVE YOU SUMMONED ME, HUMAN?”
“I seek relief,” the woodcutter said.  “Relief…and revenge.”
“HMMM, I LIKE IT,” said the demon, a floating dark blue upper humanoid torso levitating eight feet above the crackling pine needles, backlit by a literally hellish halo of Cherenkov radiation.  “WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE ME DO?”
“Destroy the universe,” said the woodcutter.
“WAIT…WHAT?” Sydney asked.
“Destroy the universe,” the woodcutter repeated.  “Every last bit of it.”
“WHY WOULD I WANT TO DO THAT?”
“Look, you make deals with humans all the time, right?  Well, this is the deal I want to make.”
“DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE STANDARD TERMS ARE FOR A DIABOLIC PACT?”
The woodcutter swallowed drily and nodded.
“IF I DESTROY THE UNIVERSE, HOW DO I BENEFIT?  I MEAN, WITH THE UNIVERSE GONE, SO ARE YOU.  HECK, I’D BE GONE, TOO!  HOW DOES THAT HELP ME?”
“Do you want to make this deal or not?”
“WHY DO YOU WANT TO DESTROY THE UNIVERSE?”
“Do you really need to know?”
“SINCE YOU CAN’T DESTROY THE UNIVERSE AND I CAN, YES!”
The woodcutter cast his gaze down.  “They rejected me.”
“WHO REJECTED YOU?” Sydney asked.  “THE NOBEL PRIZE COMMITTEE?  THE PARIS REVIEW?  THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS?”
“The other two members of our polycule triad.”
“YOU HAD A THREEWAY GOING?  DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY GUYS ASK ME FOR THAT ARRANGEMENT?”
“No women make that request?”
“ARE YOU SERIOUS?  ALL A WOMAN HAS TO DO IS EVEN HINT SHE’S INTERESTED AND EVERYTHING FALLS INTO PLACE.”
A single  bitter tear rolled down the woodcutter’s cheek.  “We had an arrangement, but then they betrayed me.”
“SO YOUR GAL PAL RAN OFF WITH THE OTHER GUY.”
The woodcutter flushed red, a combination of shame and anger.  “The two women in our triad ran off and left me!”
After a long pause Sydney said, “YOU’RE KIDDING, RIGHT?”
The woodcutter shook his head.  “Cross my heart and hope to die.”
“OH, YOU’LL DIE, ALL RIGHT,” said the demon, and in a flash he obliterated the woodcutter’s physical form, rendering him down to a single sentient e. coli microbe living in the gut of Pigasus, the immortal twenty-three ton hog of hell who exists on a constant diet of radioactive prunes, rusty razor blades, and jalapeno peppers.
“ASSHOLE…” Sydney muttered to himself before winking out of this plane of existence.
