Sky Blanket 2024 - Q1
Hi crafty friends! I am incredibly overdue on sharing an update on my sky blanket for 2024. If you are new to this project, some things to know:
This is my version of the temperature blanket this year - one row a day. Except instead of temperature, I am using "what is the sky doing today?" as my scale. The palette is all blues and greys based on how sunny or cloudy it is, going all the way from turquoise blue for the sunniest of sunnies to a dark grey for thunderstorms.
It's based on the year between two dates, not the start of the year. So my Q1 actually begins mid-October '23 and ends mid-January '24. So I am only a month behind sharing. I blame it on the weaving in of ends.
Tumblr media
I am actually staying decently caught up! I don't always do the rows right away, but they are fairly quick to work up so I'm finding I can bring myself to current just within a single Sunday if I need to. The harder part has been making sure I record the weather, and there have been more days than I'd like to admit where I barely had a chance to go outside at all. I've been using timeanddate.com if I need to check dates I might have missed to make my best guess for cloud cover.
In Q1 - 92 days total:
Sunny - 30%, 28 days Partly Cloudy - 27%, 25 days Mostly Cloudy - 15%, 14 days Overcast - 12%, 11 days Rain - 13%, 12 days Snow/Ice- 2%, 2 days
Tumblr media
I have not yet had a chance to use my granite colorway for thunderstorms. Meanwhile, the cream border will always be around every square. Admittedly in different number so I can get the month to the same consistent 33 rows.
Pattern: Toni Lipsey's/TLYarnCraft's linen square stitch pattern The Yarn: Stylecraft Special DK
The pattern The yarn
(yes I still love the colors of the sky... even though it forces me to weave in too many ends to count)

Five Colours for April
If you have been following along on Instagram you will know that I’ve been somewhat fixated on green over recent weeks! This palette is as far from that as possible! Red is definitely not green! Mixing and matching red can be challenging but it’s worth taking a risk. What do you think? The link to a chart for 120 squares with 5 colours can be FOUND HERE and there is also a list of 720…

I've just finished the first garment I've ever knitted for myself (have only made baby clothes before)! It's also the largest thing I've ever knitted, and it's taken me about 12 days. It's a basket stitch poncho in Stylecraft Special DK (the shade is "Claret", a lovely dark red), worked on 6.5mm needles for the collar, 7mm needles for the body, and 4mm needles for these little cuffs. It is ever so soft, has a lovely drape, and feels quite witchy, so I'm very pleased to have finished it on Hallowe'en!

I loved the fruity granny square bags I made as gifts so much that I had to make one for myself! I stuck to just oranges this time and I love the way it came out :D
Thanks to my dad for taking artsy photos, haha!
Pattern: Orange Granny Squares from Raffmusa's Tutti Frutti Granny Square series, top half and strap from ‘Super Easy DIY Crochet Bag’ by August Craft & Crochet!
Yarn: Various stash DK - orange colours are Stylecraft Special DK in (I think) Clementine and Spice, and the dark green top half is some lovely Schoppel Relinkt in Olive!! Worked amazing for this project.

We officially have a hobbit hole!
50 rows out of 810
I am using Stylecraft's ReCreate which is made from recycled garments! I imagine it's offcuts or "factory waste" but it's nice to use an acrylic blend that doesn't just feel like new plastic. It's a 40 wool 30 acrylic 30 polyester blend, the label claims the poly is derived from recycled plastic bottles as well but I'm not sure on the validity of that. Nonetheless, it makes a good gifting yarn. It's a lighter DK, I'm using 3.5mm needles here it's recommended for 4 though. I chose these colours (ink and ecru) because I liked the idea of it looking like ink on a paper as an illustration
My deadline for this project is the 27th of November and I started it on the 7th September - my aim is to have an 80 row chart done each week or ~ 10-15 row done a day! I'm making it for my dad's 50th birthday. This is such a beautiful project it's going to be difficult to give away. It's also going to be incredibly long - the original pattern is a lace weight and knitted on 2mm, I'm on 3.5mm as I said with a light DK weight

Is this yarn still your fav? If so whats the name? I'm looking for one just like it
hi! the link in the post is unfortunately dead now but as you can see from hovering over it it's "sirdar hayfield bonus dk" it's still one of my go-to ranges for acrylic for things like amigurumi, but i also like stylecraft special dk which comes in an equally wide range of colours for about the same price

Sunday Stitchin'
Yesterday I caught up on my squares for my sky blanket 2024, which as a reminder is my version of a temperature blanket for the year. I started in mid-October, as I've chosen to run the project for the year between my anniversary. So Dec-Jan is block 3, and I'm trying to stay mostly on top of weaving in ends as I finish sections.
Tumblr media
Today it snowed! So I got to use another row of that silver you might be able to see in only two stitches up in the top righthand corner. So far, there's still one color I haven't used it all, which is the darker grey intended for thunderstorms. I'm sure that'll come with Spring.
Yarn: Stylecraft Special DK
Pattern: Linen Square Temperature Blanket

Five Colour Friday for December
Five Colour Friday for December
I don’t really have a favourite colour. It’s the interaction between colours that excites me more than just one. However some colours do have special characteristics. Empire is one of those – it adds a richness to the finished piece. Today I’ve chosen it as the main colour. I’ve combined it with Duck Egg and Sage as complementaries. Of course – contrasts are always needed so I chose a mid-tone…

Five Colours for March
This month I’ve had the usual fun with FIVE COLOUR FRIDAY (this link will take you to previous colour combinations ) I’ve used Gingerbread as the joining colour, it’s a shade to which I keep coming back! It goes with far more colours than you would imagine.  Stylecraft Special DK  Meadow Pistachio  Fuchsia Purple  Gold and  Gingerbread  Why not try it. Let me know if you do.  Don’t…

This poncho is working up so quickly and I'm so pleased! It's probably because I'm using 7mm needles with DK yarn (Stylecraft Special DK in "Claret"), but even so, I'm excited to see it!

So I might post some holiday snaps later if people want to see them but in important crafting news, I started another Taylor cardigan (this time on the right yarn weight and needle size 😅 - I'm using Stylecraft Highland Heathers in Granite and DK special in Bottle)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Started and finished the back and am now working on the left front, the colourway comes from this version of the cardigan from 2020 which officially was listed on the merch store as one of two holiday cardigans, but it also came out around the same time as evermore which is one of my most beloved albums so I'm just calling it the evermore cardigan

Cute little shoulder bags as a gift for my sibling’s girlfriend and her sister! My sibling is visiting them for the summer and we wanted to send gifts. These turned out SO cute, I think I’m going to need to make one for myself :D
Pattern: Orange squares and strawberry squares are from Raffamusa design’s Tutti Frutti Granny Square series, while the flower squares are the ‘Dainty Daisy Granny Square’ by Just Be Crafty. The shape and the top half were taken from the ‘Super Easy DIY Crochet Bag’ by August Craft & Crochet!
Yarn: The only one I know is that the green base from the orange granny squares is Debbie Bliss eco in shade 32603. The others are a hodge-podge of DK I already had (potentially Stylecraft Special leftover from a temperature scarf, at least for the oranges), and unlabelled stuff bought from the donation section of my local craft store! I was able to find some cotton yarns with more structure, which was great for the bags!
Label: My lovely new buttons are from VikingLaser on Etsy, who was wonderfully communicative and prompt. The buttons are super cute and good quality - I’d recommend if you’re looking for handmade buttons like this!
