if i had a nickel for every time one single specific fandom i'm in had a fanfic-based scandal which ended up spreading way beyond the fandom itself, pissing off a lot of people and permanently changing something about the functioning of fanfiction website archive of our own, i'd have two nickels. which isn't a lot but it's absolutely fucking wild that it happened twice

All right, I made it thru! Spoil away!
Seriously tho, I loved this one so damn much, I love how extra and batshit it is, I love these characters, I love the aesthetic, I love the use of music (y’all think I wouldn’t recognize tasteful use of Stravinsky, huh??) …
And I think I deserve a treat

Which title is better for a comic? (they both fit but I can't choose lol)
1. "in search of the wonders of the world" (stww)
2. "Diamond of the Kingdom" (Dotk)

A lot of people are focusing on wangxian's impact on ao3, which yes was an absolutely huge impact (previous to the Chinese govt.'s crackdown on ao3 following the 227 incident, most of the most viewed fics on ao3, jncluding the number 1 spot holder, were fics written in Mandarin, posted by authors in China. Not to mention the changes made after the stww fic. For better or for worse, wangxian left its mark on ao3.)
However, I also want to point out wangxian's role in helping to popularize bl in the west. Previous to the Untamed, most discussion of bl I would see was on the fringes, not taken seriously by mainstream fandom or even looked down upon. People would scoff about "weird yaoi" and view bl as unworthy of consideration, whilst enjoying those same bl tropes rewritten in western media. And I can't say that that's fully changed, but I've at least seen something of a shift with the popularity The Untamed/MDZS achieved. I've seen bigger youtubers and media sources actually talking about bl's impact on western media, using the untamed as an example. I've seen MDZS discussed in big literary journals for its unique storytelling devices, often devices it shares with other danmei, or other bl at large. And I'm hoping that with this, more people understand why bl is worthy and good art and the impact it has had on the queer community worldwide.
To me this is the impact the mdzs properties have had that compels me the most, as it's an area very dear to me. I discovered my own queerness through bl, as I found more catharsis and personal fulfillment in the tropes presented therein.

This poll is a celebration of fandom history; we're aware that there are certain issues with many of the listed pairings and sources, but they are a part of that history. Please do not take this as an endorsement, and refrain from harassment.

Whenever I post on anything I get scared to overtag or undertag it
Like I don't wanna basically be the next stww when tagging my stuff, but also what if i dont put enough tags so now people dont see it
I spend like five minutes trying to decide what I should and shouldn't tag

It's worth noting many misspelled or censored tags on AO3 will be proper filters if the tag wranglers have gotten to them... but a) tag wranglers don't do that immediately the moment your fic goes live, and b) why make more work for them if your tag already exists?
The tags aren't going to get you in trouble--literally the only time I ever saw someone get in trouble for something remotely related to tags was probably the STWW debacle... and that wasn't actually over the tags themselves but moreso because the user was posting threats directed at users upset over the work's notable amount of tags. XP
I just saw a story on AO3 tagged "pet p!ay"

Reminder to readers: Everyone on OTW staff is fans. They care about fanfic, and they are part of fannish communities.
This is not "report this thing to some IT-TOS department that doesn't pay attention to the conversations happening on the site." The people on the abuse team - like everyone else involved in AO3 maintenance and management - know what AO3 is normally like, know how fanfic communities work, know what's considered "a little sharp" vs what's "way over the line omg people should not be allowed to do/say that."
Sometimes the over-the-top stuff is technically within the rules. (See: STWW for most of its existence.) But if they can look at a thing and say, "Hey this is obviously deliberately hostile" - they can take action.
And "Not a fanwork" is the most common way to report hostility. If it's a rant about how evil some kinds of fans are, or how some fans should not be watching some canon or should not be making some kinds of fic... that's "not a fanwork."
(Disclaimer: I am not on the PAC committee; I make no decisions about what is and isn't allowed on AO3. I'm talking about my perceptions as a long-time OTW volunteer, and sometimes I make mistakes. Do not rely on my words as absolute truth.)
Tumblr media
Report that kind of thing either as not a fanwork or as harassment.
If someone seems to primarily be posting to AO3 to shit stir about horrific current events so as to make the environment unfriendly to such-and-such a group, you can argue it's harassment. Will the Abuse team agree with you? It depends. But you can certainly report it.

STWW, a year later, still traumatizing
So I was recently looking through my Ao3 account and all I see is Bland Times With Wangxian in my bookmarks and I cannot tell if I am ready to laugh or cry about STWW even though it's been like two years now
