You sit in Sam’s lap, his arm wrapped comfortably around your waist as he lights his joint. You wrinkle your nose at the pungent smell, hoping he didn’t notice your distaste. He takes a long drag, the smoke curling slowly upwards like a wisp of fleeting thoughts.

“Can I try?” you ask casually, keeping your voice light, even as a spark of rebellion ignites within you.

His brows perk up in surprise, and he shifts his gaze to meet yours, a teasing glint in his eyes. He pats your head with his free hand, a gesture that simultaneously feels affectionate and condescending. “I don’t think so, princess.”

You groan playfully, rolling your eyes. “Why not?” you whine, trying to tug at his sense of adventure.

He laughs, a deep, amused sound that vibrates through you, and shakes his head. taking another drag from the joint. The smoke dances around you, wrapping the moment in a hazy warmth.

“Come on, I can handle it,” you protest, scooting slightly closer, feeling bold. “What’s the worst that could happen?”

He chuckles again, this time a low rumble that sends a thrill through you. “Oh, I don’t know. How about everything? Besides, I don't want to be responsible for turning you into a puddle on my lap.”

You laugh along with him, but your heart races at the thought. “You already do that” You lean in, your voices dropping to conspiratorial whispers. “Just one little hit, Sam. We’re all friends here, right?”

He pauses, considering, his expression darkening for just a moment. He ponders your words, swirling the smoke in the air, and you can tell he’s torn.

“What if I promise to be responsible?” you add, your voice dropping to a playful whisper. You run your fingers through his hair and down to his arms, tracing down to his hands and rings, His eyes flicker to yours, curiosity mingling with mischief, and the corner of his mouth quirks upward in a half-smile.

“Alright,” he finally relents, only half-serious. “But if you start giggling uncontrollably and asking me if I believe in aliens, I'm sending you to bed.”

You grin triumphantly, feeling like you’ve just struck a deal with the devil. Sam hands you the joint, and for a moment, the world feels electric, filled with the promise of laughter, mischief, and a hint of recklessness.

With a triumphant grin, you take the joint from Sam, feeling a rush of exhilaration mixed with apprehension. As you bring it closer to your lips, the familiar smell floods your senses, and for a moment, you hesitate. But the thrill of defiance propels you forward, and you take a small, tentative drag.

The smoke is thick and harsh, entering your lungs like a storm. You choke almost immediately, the coughing bursting forth uncontrollably as your body protests the foreign substance. Sam's laughter echoes around you, warm and teasing. He gently rubs your back, but you can see the amusement dancing in his eyes.“You okay, princess?” he asks between chuckles, the smoke still swirling around you both. You can’t help but scowl, feeling a bit ridiculous.

Gasping, you wave a hand in front of your face, trying to clear the air as the rough, acrid taste lingers on your tongue. “Not really,” you manage to croak out, still coughing. The world seems to tilt slightly, and not in a good way.

Sam leans closer, still chuckling, and offers you a bottle of water. “Here, chug this. I should have warned you. It’s not as easy as it looks.”

You take the water gratefully, gulping it down as you shake your head in disbelief. “How do you even enjoy this?” you manage, the truth of your dislike creeping into your voice. You glance at the half-burned joint in your fingers, feeling a mix of disappointment and embarrassment.

He simply shrugs, his expression shifting to something more sincere. “It’s not for everyone, I guess. It takes some getting used to.”

You let out a small laugh, feeling slightly foolish as the coughing subsides but the warmth of the smoke lingers in your body, making you feel light-headed in a not-so-great way. “You definitely didn’t sell it well, you know,” you tease, but there’s a bit of seriousness in your tone.

“I told you you might not like it,” he replies, his hand still smoothing over your back in a soothing motion. “But hey, you tried, right? That’s what counts.”

“Yeah, well, I think I’ll stick to my soda next time,” you say, pushing the joint away from you as if it were something completely foreign.

He grins, a playful glint returning to his eyes. “Good choice. No coughing with soda.”

Finding your rhythm again, you lean into him, the moment shifting from rebellion to comfort. As the night continues, you settle back into the easy laughter and camaraderie between you, realizing that sometimes, it’s the company that matters most—and maybe the wild escapades could wait for another day.

Sam Monroe loves watching you through your window.

Well, not really your window- but the window of the house you babysit in. He watches you as you wash dishes, corral the screaming five year old, and set the table with food that always looks unreasonably good.

He didn’t mind his neighbors. They were nice people, always took out their trash on time, never too loud, and their two kids were pretty cute. Sam had never really paid them or their house any attention, though. That is- until you came along.

You, in your yoga pants and baby tees that always left a little strip of abdomen when you walked. It drove him crazy. He was just sitting by his bedroom window one sunny afternoon when he saw you. Immediately, he was intrigued. He grew even more intrigued when he watched you walk through his neighbor’s yard and tap in their door’s key code. He’s been sneaking glances since.

Really, he’s been sneaking a little bit more than glances. When you’re over, which is only twice a week, he sits at his window and watches you in the kitchen. He sees you load and unload the dishwasher. He sees you prep snacks and juices. But his favorite thing is watching you sing along to the music you play. Sam figured out how to hack into the neighbor’s Alexa, so now he can listen along with you. God, your music is hot. He thinks. Misfits? Pantera? Are you trying to impress me? He likes that you keep it a bit girly, too. With old school Taylor Swift and Paramore. He chuckles to himself when you play air-guitar or grab a spatula to use as a microphone. When you pick up the youngest kid and bounce her around to Flyleaf, Sam swears he can see stars.

You live close, too. He found this out on a late, cold night in January. The sun had already set, and you walked out the front door and down the street. It’s way too cold and dark for you to be walking home, Sam thought. Anything could happen to you. Sure, it was a nice neighborhood, but bad stuff happens to beautiful girls like you anywhere. So, he did what any worried guy would do. He put out his blunt, pulled a hoodie over his head, and followed you home. Not like that, of course. It was from a distance. He just wanted to keep you safe- make sure nothing happened to you. And it very well could’ve, too, considering you had no idea you were being followed home on a fifteen minute walk. You didn’t turn around even once. Good thing Sam was there. You’re lucky.

He wishes he knew your name- he knows how old you are, and where you go to school (thanks to that school sweatshirt you wear constantly). Obviously, Sam would never make a move. He’s not like that. He doesn’t really care about girls like that, they’re just bodies to him. And you? It’s the same thing. Just- a body he wants to protect. A body he wants to take care of.
