Learning Languages With Hotel Del Luna
☆ scroll ☆ down ☆ for ☆ random ☆ vocab ☆
안영하세요, I've been on hiatus a bit because I'm been ill. But I'm back now and I'm really happy because I've basically found a way to hack my language learning to the point I can actually use it to not only maintain but also improve my Mandarin level (the language I really don't want to lose)
你们好! 我没有写那么多因为我生病了。但是,我会过,和我很喜欢因为我发现能侵截我的语言学习的办法。这让我不但保持我的中文水平,而且提高我的普通话能力,因为我非常不想失去这个语。
Ok, so Hotel Del Luna is a bit old at this point but I wanted to use something where I didn't feel any time pressure because I'm using it to learn languages.
对,现在,满月路管比较老,但是,我想过我没有感觉任何时间压力的事,因为我用它学语言。
☆ scroll ☆ for ☆ vocab
Conveniently, netflix has the option to add simplified chinese subtitles. As I already know mandarin, this means I can watch in Korean and follow along in simplified chinese. I'm semi fluent but it is still pretty hard at this point, so I'm also watching at a reduced speed. Just not so slow that it looks weird or is impossible to watch.
The process is when I come across mandarin vocab I don't know, I look it up and note it down, creating a vocab list. At my current mandarin level, I'm roughly able to figure out the meanings of words based off the radicals in the characters, so I don't need so many repetitions to remember the vocab.
This vocab is then serving as a list I can look up in Japanese and Korean (my two target languages!) These ones are a completely different story as they're totally new to me.
这次会然后为我能在韩语,日本语(我两个目标语言)检索的目录。这都是很不一样的故事,因为她们对我完全新的。
☆ scroll ☆ for ☆ vocab ☆
Along with Vietnam, Korea and Japan are part of what has been known historically as the sinosphere, a geoup of countries which have been influenced by china. But this doesn't mean the languages are similar at all!
跟越南,韩国,日本,都是中国领过国的一部分,也被中国影响。但是,他们的语言非常不一样。
By combining them here, I've tried to use the show as a theme for my studies and for compiling vocab, not due to any similarities between the languages. However it seems to be working, because I'm genuinely feeling motivated to study for the first time in a while.
为了结合他们这里,我尝试用电视剧为学习题目,汇集词汇,但是这不于任何期间语言的相思。然而,看来工作的很好,因为我第一个时间感觉激励学习。

Character Study - The chilling warmth of Haein
Haein is a really misunderstood character. She has dark humour. She cares immensely but doesn't show it very openly. She hides her feelings cause she doesn't like to be vulnerable. She's very quick to say things that protect her emotions and she bites with her words just to protect herself. But all of this assertive feistiness comes at a cost. People tend to misunderstand and write Hong Haein off as mean, rude, cold and difficult to live/work with.
Her personality and tendency to appear uncaring has a lot to do with the lack of warmth she received by her family especially her mother. When she meets Hyunwoo she's no different, she puts on no pretences. Over time she warms up to him and shows him her softer more vulnerable side - all of which I'm sure aided in him falling for her deeply. But then that damned chasm occurs, and Hyunwoo much like the rest of the world forgets Haein's soft heart and soul that live underneath the iron clad armour she wears. It hurts me when I think about the pain she experienced realising she's misunderstood even from the man who once showered her with unyielding love and warmth.
Some incidents of Hyunwoo misunderstanding her are so interesting:
- The scene where Haein requests/orders Hyunwoo to accompany her to the hospital.
I love that it was shot from both perspectives. In her mind she sounds extremely soft and worried. It was a request meant to be delivered that way. I'm sure Haein couldn't register what her tone was because her intention were so soft. Why would he reject my request, He's free I'm just asking him to accompany me? But Hyunwoo had just heard about the will. That paired up with the continuous blows he's received the past two years were too much for him to take a moment and understand that this is how she's always spoken.
-The rain scene after their Yongduri night stay (I hold the belief that Haein did indeed often wait up for him).
Haein says: 'I really wasn't waiting for you.' to which Hyunwoo replies 'I know better than anyone, you're not the kind of person who would wait up for me.' In the scene you can see Haein slightly taken aback and offended by that. Because she is the kind of person who waits up for him. Her offence seems so justified. Because why can't Hyunwoo of all people see the real her. When did he forget to understand her? It must be so hurtful for her to think Hyunwoo's forgotten how warm she was with him. I imagine she used to wait up for him before the miscarriage but here she's listening to her husband say she's not that kind of person. (That little scene where Haein sits on the sofa waiting but Hyunwoo chose not to ask her if she was okay is my evidence! There was a post on this as well a while ago!)
It's also evident in her desire to run a hand over his shoulder to remove the dampness there. Her screaming at him to hold the umbrella properly. But he's so oblivious and deaf to her love that it hurts to witness.
- The bar after their day at the Lavender field in Germany at their honeymoon
Haein smiles and says, she wasn't angry after he told her that he had noticed no one else and that his eyes were only on her. But Hyunwoo remembers her being angry for another two hours. This scene was such a small example of it. What if Haein's anger did immediately dissipate but Hyunwoo just interpreted it as her still being angry. I can't offer any evidence as we don't see this scene but their different accounts make me think what if she was just feeling down but he assumed it was a continuation of her anger.
There are so many other examples sprinkled throughout the show as well. I started off really disliking her character but I've grown to really appreciate it. Because once you see how warm Hong Haein is in love, you'll see just how fierce, loyal and undying her conviction and mind is. She'll show and tell you in the most beautiful ways just how much she cares without ever telling you she loves you. She's not cold, she's just misunderstood.
Unfortunately though, life isn't a drama. So when people like this do exist, they tend to be written off as cold, harsh, unlovable. Humans have the potential to be infinitely complex creatures which is why it's been so interesting to see Haein's multi faceated character these past 8 weeks.
Just an additional thought: I also love the difference between Haein and Hyunwoo's business ideologies. Haein is sharp, to the point, efficiency, money and loyalty oriented. While Hyunwoo is soft, caring, warm and people oriented.
We see Hyunwoo's ideology against his father in law. When the FIL wanted to stab his long serving employee it was unfathomable for Hyunwoo. Hyunwoo's ties with the past employees of Queens got him so much information and support. His logical request to the manager of maintenance to make it snow comes after a long, good relationship - it's pretty evident in that scene. I loved how the show displayed Hyunwoo's ability to make deep and good relationships and how it ended up helping them to get Queens back. It's a hugeee contrast to how things run in the Hong Family. It was very fresh to see him show from his actions 'You can be nice and still get the job done'.
But even Hae-in's contacts, though acquired differently, are just as instrumental. The employee she took a stand for, the juice guy and Secretary Na. None of them would call her warm or soft but they would sing her praises if you ever ask them. It's such an interesting parallel between their characters. It also goes to show Haein is a good person, she just tends to show it very selectively and rarely. I do think the 1 Trillion club made her think of only money and efficiency for a while, but I still do believe she had been doing good away from public eyes, changing people's lives - it's just that no one was there to witness or publicize them.
#i relate with Haein in some ways#she's a very interesting character#the show gives such an interesting contract between both of them#queen of tears#baek hyun woo#hong hae in#kdrama#kim soo hyun#kim ji won#baek hyunwoo#hong haein#baekhong#character study

Will I ever draw Jong Woo without covering him in blood, you ask?
Stay tuned and find out.

You'll be surprised if you find out what kind of person I am. You know? You know. I'm a scary person. I won't even blink if I was stabbed in the stomach. But… you scare me. I get nervous when you're in front of me. And that annoys me because it makes me feel like an idiot. But even though it annoys me… I still wait for you. Okay…. You should know, Yeom Mi-jeong, you should know who you are. ~ My Liberation Notes (2022)

“Why is dialogue so emotionally exaggerated in Japanese film?” one reddit user asked.
The response HarryMcFann gave is an incredible primer to understanding Japanese performance style and the media influenced by it (I’m looking at you, BLs and Kdramas).
“Not claiming to be an expert or have a definitive answer here, but these are my two cents based off of what I know about Japan and Japanese film. This is a very general overview. It’s important to note that culture is complex and full of nuances, but this should give a general understanding as to why Japanese films are somewhat exaggerated.
As u/scytheavatar pointed out, Japanese film is influenced by Japanese theater, but that doesn't fully answer your question. For example, you may ask about Western theater as it relates to Western films, and so on (Western theater is exagerated, but films today aren’t). So let’s look at Japanese theater.
The three main forms of Japanese theater are Kabuki, Noh, and Bunraku, and each of these forms influenced Japanese films in different ways. Now what is important to note here is that back in the early years of cinema, those in France and the rest of the West saw film as a new form of photography, while the Japanese viewed film as a new form of theater. Just think about that for a second, and what the implications are. Back in the late 19th and early 20th century the big thing about photography was it’s ability to capture realism, and that realism was a huge concern for many Western filmmakers. The famous French film critic, André Bazin, wrote extensively about how he believed the essence of cinema is its ability to reproduce reality (there were, of course, Western filmmakers who rejected this notion, such as the Soviet formalists and German expressionists, but going into that would require a lot more words). In Japan this was not the case, and from its inception, the Japanese rejected the Western idea of cinematic “realism.”
How did this manifest itself in early Japanese cinema? One thing the Japanese directly took from theater was the presence of a narrator. Japanese silent films were always accompanied by someone called a Benshi (fun fact, Kurosawa’s brother was a benshi), who would narrate the film. Japanese silent films would then have few intertitles, because the benshi would be there to explain the plot, and so on. What’s more, audiences would often attend a film based off of which benshi was performing. The benshi where local celebrities in many ways, and they would try to one-up one another. So naturally, to give a good show, the benshi would have to exaggerate in order to give more life to the performance (these guys would voice characters and play all the different roles). Directors would make their films knowing that there was going to a benshi present. So popular was the benshi, that much of the resistance to transitioning into talking films was from those lamenting the loss of the benshi narrators. Japan actually finally made the transition into talking films much later than the rest of the world.
It is also important to understand that “realism” is a relative term (cue some 15-year-old calling me pretentious). Yes, Western theater is also exaggerated and not particularly realistic, but traditional Western theater really doesn’t compare to Japanese theater. In fact, the famous German playwright, Bertolt Brecht, based many of his ideas of modernism in theater on traditional Japanese theater. This is why Ozu is seen as the most “traditional” of Japanese filmmakers while also being viewed as an early “modernist.” (It’s all really confusing and requires a bunch of quotation marks). Anyway, the Japanese don’t really have the 4th wall in theater the same way we do here in the West. In Japanese theater, audience interaction is huge, and stagehands (albeit often wearing black) walk freely on stage and move props and scenery around the actors, and so on. The key difference here between Japanese theater and Western theater is that while the West try to disguise and mask the artifice of the stage, the Japanese embraced it. A quick example of the way a Japanese actor performs in theater would be the Mie. The Mie is a powerful and emotional pose struck by an actor, who then freezes for a moment. This pose is more for the audience than the drama of the play, and often times reveals important information about that character. This idea of the artificiality of the performance in theater can also be seen in Japanese film.
Finally, it is worth noting how the Japanese view nature vs how the West does. In the West, we look at the natural as being something untouched by people. Interestingly, this isn’t really the case in Japan. In Japan there’s a belief that something only becomes “natural” when it has been in some way shaped by a person. Weird, right? To quote Donald Richie:
“To most Japanese, the Western idea of “realism,” particularly in its naturalistic phase, was something truly new. All early Japanese dramatic forms had assumed the necessity of a structure created through mediation. The same was true of Japanese culture in general: the wilderness was natural only after it had been shaped and presented in a palpable form, as in the Japanese garden, or flowers were considered living (ikebana) only after having been cut and arranged for viewing. Life was thus dramatically lifelike only after having been explained and commented on. Art and entertainment alike were presentational, that is they rendered a particular reality by way of an authoritative voice (be it the noh chorus or the benshi). This approach stood in marked contrast to the representational style of the West in which one assumed the reality of what was being shown.”
I want to make it clear that not all Japanese films are like this. If you watch films by a director like Hirokazu Koreeda, you will not see the same sort of exaggeration.”

The "Femme Fatale" trope and parallelism between Korean dramas and Italian cinema
So I was watching The Devil Judge and I noticed an interesting parallelism with an Italian movie I watched when I was a child.
Sources: "The Devil Judge" (2021) ft. Jang Young-Nam, South Korea "Malèna" (2000) dir. Giuseppe Tornatore ft. Monica Bellucci, Italy
#the devil judge#malèna#monica bellucci#jang young nam#cha kyung-hee#kdrama#tdj#italian cinema#badass women#I wonder if I can use these gifs they're credited?#had I known I would get so invested in kdramas and cinema I would've studied cinema tbh#femme fatale#I am convinced Korean directors are influenced by Italian cinema

my - family by choice review, kdrama ☄. *. ⋆
going to try and write this less excited girl and more hnmm cute little write-up girly. Family by choice in restrospect is a remake of go ahead; in my personal opinion, I prefer family by choice.
At first, I didn't want to watch Family by Choice since it was a remake of the Chinese drama "GO AHEAD" It's not like I hated Go Ahead or I even watched it.
Go Ahead has a love triangle, where the guy she's supposed to have a closer familial relationship with goes on to have feelings for her, and so does her so-called "brother." See, it's so complicated for no reason. So I spared myself the drama and didn't watch it.
So when Family by Choice came out and I was seeing it on tiktok I was like, No, not watching this at all. That was until episode three came out and I laid eyes on my girl, "Seo ji hye." I was like, Yh, I have to watch this. Seo Ji Hye is my favourite Korean actress. I've loved her since Love All Play (another kdrama she starred in) and ever since I've been in love, so yh, I had to watch it, though I still had doubts Then I saw she had a crush on my man, "Bae Hyun Seong," and umm, I love him too so yh, I just started watching the drama for them but I did fall in love with the drama itself and the cast and here is my review
going to explain these without much context in case someone wants to watch it.
♡ Dal and Juwon's friendship: their friendship was so girly and cute, frl, the way they met and how close they became was so aww. They were so funny, and I love how even though Juwon was so disappointed (when you find out your friend likes your older brother way) with the fact that Dal had a crush on Haejun, she still helped her. and Juwon always looked out for Dal, especially when she had problems with her mom. and finally, i love how dal was always behind the scene and having all info in juwon's life in check (if that makes anysense)
♡ the familial relationship between the main cast: I love how everyone was always connected; it was so sweet and just watching the show makes you feel like you're growing up with them; it just feels so high school and life (idk how to explain more than that)
♡ their fathers: their fathers were literally the definition of parents who deserve children and the way Juwon's dad considered Heajun his own was so sweet; I mean, the man treats Haejun better than some people treat their own blood
♡ every couple: I'd say my least favourite couple was the main couple I'd say they were ok, but my favs will always be the second lead couple (I mean, it's my two favourites, please), and after them is the third couple, then Heajun's mom and Juwon's dad. the main couple for me was bland, but like you know, they were just the norm, but the second lead couple was shy girl and oblivious guy, cmon—that's like my favourite troupe please and the third couple, even though they had so few scenes, I think they represented me most, especially in rooting for the second couple and the third couple was just so cute, like, actually cute
♡ crazy second lead syndrome; the kdrama on its own I loved, but what I was really stayed for was the second couple, "해달" I was so hyper-fixated on this show because of the second lead couple. I went to tiktok every day for more info my screen time was a lot.
finally, I'll rank my top 10 characters with no explanation
miss dal
hae jun
ju won
the third couple - they're one person to most
sah na
ju won's dad
sah na's dad
hui ja
Jun Ho
Seo Hyeon
So I failed to write this less excited girl; this drama sits at the top of my favourite list. if you like adrinette you should like haedal
also who loves my notion review page?
