The world of music lost a true legend on Sunday with the passing of David Sanborn, a revered jazz saxophonist who graced stages and recordings for over five decades. Sanborn, who battled prostate cancer for several years, died at the age of 78. David Sanborn A Career Defined by Versatility and Collaboration Sanborn's musical journey transcended the boundaries of genre. He seamlessly transitioned between jazz, blues, rock, and R&B, leaving an indelible mark on each. His impressive list of collaborators showcases his versatility and ability to elevate any musical setting. A Studio Powerhouse: Sanborn's saxophone soared on iconic tracks by a who's who of music royalty. He lent his distinct sound to recordings by Stevie Wonder (including the groundbreaking "Talking Book" album), David Bowie ("Young Americans"), and countless others. Musicians including B.B. King, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, and Chaka Khan all benefited from his masterful contributions. Beyond the Studio: Sanborn wasn't confined to the recording studio. He was a captivating live performer, touring with legends like Wonder and Bowie, captivating audiences worldwide with his soulful and energetic stage presence. Sharing the Love of Jazz: He hosted a syndicated radio program, "The Jazz Show," where he introduced listeners to the vast world of jazz and its incredible artists. Modern Communication: Sanborn embraced new media, launching a podcast, "As We Speak," where he delved into in-depth discussions with fellow musicians. Laurence Juber Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson 

How life-affirming to be back Live with 2x Grammy Winner Laurence Juber. Laurence got us started with his Cobalt Blue. Loved it! What an extraordinary finger-playing guitarist. Gorgeous. 

We talked the LA fires, the Juber evacuation plan, fortunately not taken to fruition. Animals before guitars, his one-of-a-kind custom shop signature Martin, and a Les Paul were the two that made the cut. Laurence is doing what he can to help, performing at a series of gigs that will donate their proceeds, including Tuesday’s big fundraiser at The Canyon Club. 

Laurence talked with great pride about his two daughters, both achieving big things in the biz. He also spoke with great love and reverence of his wife, Hope, to whom he’s been married and a true partner in life and oft in art, for 42 years. It’s clear that it’s family first and creating for the Jubers. There’s no sitting around eating bonbons and watching the tube for this high-functioning family. 

We talked about Laurence’s early days and influences, clarinet his first instrument, finding guitar, and learning to read music in a day. He claims. everyone was doing it. His dream was to be a session player, and he quickly realized it in Abby Road Studios with the likes of George Martin. He gigged around with innumerable bands, quite happy to be doing so, until Denny Laine made that fateful connection. Auditioning with drummer Steve Holley, their lives both changed that day when Paul McCartney asked what they’d be doing for the next few years. A childhood fantasy realized, until a pot bust in Japan. 

Laurence spoke of his solo work, lots more session work,  segueing to TV, which led him to some work with a guy named Snuffy, and ultimately to scoring and composing… writing two musicals with Hope, one, the ever popular, Gilligan’s Island: The Musical.

There was a Grammy with Sir Paul for Rockestra, the first instrumental Grammy, and his solo arrangement of The Pink Panther Theme earned him a second Grammy.

Laurence has played on innumerable hits, some he’s found out about years later reading about them. He’s an amazing man with incredible talents. This was a much-needed soul-filling reminder of all that’s good and right with the world during troubled and turbulent times. He took us out with guitar perfection.

Today, we’re back - with 2x Grammy winner Laurence Juber of Wings—a nice way to catapult into 2025. Between the holidays and the LA fires, we've had a slow start, but with Laurence, that's all over now.

A music graduate of London’s Goldsmith’s College, Laurence was a featured guitar soloist with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra before becoming established as a studio musician in the mid-70s. First internationally recognized as lead guitarist in Beatle Paul McCartney’s Wings, with whom he won his first Grammy, Laurence, aka LJ, has recorded over two dozen solo albums. His latest release, A Day In My Life, is a collection of Beatles songs recorded at Abbey Road. His previous release, Select Blends,  is a virtually live album pulled from his over 250 livestream performances during the Covid lockdown.

His LJ Plays The Beatles was voted one of Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s all-time Top Ten albums. His solo arrangement of The Pink Panther Theme earned him a second Grammy, while his arrangement of Stand By Me was heard nationally in a Diamonds Are Forever commercial. Laurence's DVD-Audio project Guitar Noir (AIX Records) won a CES Demmy award for best audio.

Laurence has four guitar books in print. The latest is The Evolution of Fingerstyle Guitar, and his photo memoir, Guitar With Wings, chronicles his time with Paul. 

As a studio musician, he can be heard on recordings from artists as diverse as Harry Styles, Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks, Seal, Belinda Carlisle, Ringo Starr, and the French chanteuse Sylvie Vartin, plus he's featured on the soundtracks to hundreds of TV shows such as Home Improvement and Happy Days, and movies including the academy award-winning Dirty Dancing, Good Will Hunting and Pocahontas.

Laurence co-composed the soundtrack of the award-winning video game Diablo III and scored the NBC Dateline documentary Children Of The Harvest. His music is also featured in the Ken Burns’ documentary The Tenth Inning.

With his wife Hope, he composed the score to A Very Brady Musical and the ever-popular Gilligan’s Island: The Musical.

He is the arranger for Part Of  The Plan, a musical featuring songs by Dan Fogelberg that was recently workshopped in London under the direction of Marc Bruni (director of Beautiful on Broadway.)

Even though Laurence was in Wings with two dear friends, Denny Seiwell and Steve Holley, and we have many other mutual friends, we've yet to meet. I so look forward to sitting down with this guitar virtuoso who shares acoustic and composing passions with someone else rather close. Fun! Welcome back, indeed.
