Prosecutors ask police to reinvestigate 'Nexon pinched-hand witch hunt' (archive link)
Tumblr media
▲Part of the promotional video for a MapleStory character which was embroiled in controversy for “belittling men” due to the pinched finger shape.
this is mtl of the article that I’ve edited. you can click the link and see the original, if there’s any glaring issues please lmk and with your help I’ll edit the post ✍️.
Prosecutors have decided that it is necessary to re-investigate the perpetrators who doxxed and sexually harassed the victim of the 'Nexon pinched-hand witch hunt'.
On the 9th of August, Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office's Women and Children's Crime Investigation Division 2 (Chief Prosecutor Park Yoon-hee) requested the police reinvestigate 35 perpetrators accused of defamation, insult, violation of the Stalking Punishment Act, and obscenity through the use of telecommunications media.
"Considering that the defendants posted or sent insulting and sexually harassing texts, we deemed it necessary to continue the investigation and requested that the police investigate quickly and thoroughly to clarify the charges," the prosecutor explained.
In November of last year, the perpetrators had falsely claimed that animator A had secretly put a “pinched hand” gesture into a promotional video for Nexon Korea's game MapleStory in order to demean men. Following this, they both revealed A's identity (doxxing) and sexually harassed/threatened her on social media.
The harassment continued even after it was revealed that the animator who drew the controversial scene was a male artist in his 40s and that other scenes featuring the pinched hand were also the work of male artists. In the two months after the incident, Ms. A collected more than 3,500 online harassment messages, including sexual insults, which continued until this year.
She filed a complaint against 308 of the more serious cases, but the Seocho Police Station in Seoul, who investigated the case, dismissed it. They cited reasons such as "it is taboo to use a ‘pinched hand’ in corporate advertisements," "she is not credited as the person responsible for the animation, but there is evidence that she sympathizes with feminists," and "it is clear that the investigation is fruitless."
Following widespread criticism from civil society organizations and the media over the decision, the police acknowledged on August 7th that the decision to dismiss some of the allegations was insufficient and said they would reinvestigate the case.
In response to this, Beom Yoo-kyung, a lawyer at Duksu Law Firm, who represented Ms. A, said, "I hope they will investigate the case sincerely and explain the outcome in a way that is acceptable. If dismissal must remain the decision after a sincere investigation with every effort made, please explain the reason why. We want to see specific judgments for each offense, not just because the pinched hand is an ‘advertising taboo’, or because the victim wrote ‘something sympathetic to feminists’, or because there are ‘extremist feminists’ out there."

Solo Leveling Episode 6 Thoughts
Excellent ep!!! Spoilery thoughts for the anime, novel, and manhwa below, also CW: blood, murder
The OP is still so good. Between Studio PPURI's animation and the song, just ahhh. I'm so excited for the Igris fight in the show T-T
Oooh more Go Gunhee and Woo Jinchul! It's fun to see how much more they're showing up, even more than in the manhwa! Jinchul looks really nice.
Tumblr media
lakjdalj I know when Jinchul says, "Would it be all right if I asked for a bit of instruction? . . . It might be the kind of change of pace you need, too." (smile) he's saying, "let's spar" (it's a martial arts thing), but alkdjlaj I love this addition to the cute flirtiness of their relationship. It's very sweet. The novel gave us Gunhee asking Jinchul out for drinks, and now Jinchul is like, "let's spar :3". It's so cute.
Jinwoo v the dungeon boss is pretty cool. It's neat to see Jinwoo move so much, and the animation is gorgeous.
Jinwoo's jacket is giving me Seragaki Aoba DRAMAtical Murder vibes with its ridiculously wide collar lol (Doesn't help they're both that same bright blue).
Tumblr media
Gunhee's fond gaze as he faces Jinchul :3 Also it's neat to see Gunhee fight. We're not getting to the Frost Monarch this season, so it's a nice little preview of hopefully future seasons.
Tumblr media
They're so cute T-T
Jinwoo sadly accepting he'll get betrayed T-T He's so used to it T-T And Jinho standing by him!!! Love He :3 Even Jinwoo is like : D Jinho still calling him bro, bless.
O.O Park Heejin, Gina, and Lee Bora (had to look her up, since she's a manhwa-original character, and I believe only actually named in Arise) know each other??? And Gina is wearing normal clothes before reincarnation timeline??? Marvels, all!!! And they know Iron??? (And of course he's still a dick lol) This is so nice :3 Folks know each other :3 It's really wonderful world expansion.
Jinwoo with his necromancy shadow energy already, looks beautiful.
The song during the Lizards fight section (Dark Aria <LV2> by Hiroyuki Sawano, lyrics by Benjamin) is gorgeous. I don't know why tumblr is screwing up the formatting here. The link works. It just looks bad.
Jinwoo using dash to appear in front of Kyuhwan was an amazing bit of animation that was honestly terrifying alkdjlaj His face alkdjalj It's terror time, indeed.
Tumblr media
Bye Dongsuk. Aww, poor Jinho, just getting nearly murdered and traumatized a dozen times, but hey, you get a sugar baby out of it kind of, so win-win?
I feel like learning a bunch of people died is the really wrong time to geek out over armor releases.
And a little peek of Dongsoo. Bleh.
Wonderful episode :3 Loved all the stuff they added! This series continues to feel like really fun fanfiction in all the best ways. The animation was beautiful! The music was great! Jinwoo is going through so many discoveries and revelations and realizing how confining and horrifying the system is in new ways, and Jinho is having all sorts of discoveries of his own. Can't wait until S01E07.

KGCS posted the Studio Ppuri animator’s statement that was read at the Feminism Thought Verification Joint Response Committee press conference held outside the Seocho Police Station today. The name used for her got translated strangely, I’ve seen it “mtl romanized” as Thedaseo/Thatsaeo/Daseo and this time it was Datser, so I just ended up isolating it from the original text and pasting it in the translation…

I got sent this portion of the video regarding the vell situation, and it was pretty well researched for the most part.
But he said that pmua was a shell corp for the union, and the union demands are that they wanted full control of the company?
https://youtu.be/cigpUKl5gtc&t=1671
girl not the gamer male youtuber throwing his hat in 😂 sorry like I’ve said before I hate watching video essays so if there’s anything specific or some sort of transcript you can send it to me, but I’ll answer broadly based on what you’ve asked. PMUA just collected donations for the truck protests and if you requested a refund they gave it. They didn’t want “full control” of the company, they wanted to meet with PM and discuss how to protect employees from things like the incel attack on vellmori.
Tumblr media
when they later rebranded to KGCS they raised money to help the affected animator from Studio Ppuri, helped the studio with how they handled the issue and aided them by setting up those meetings open to the public where the studio could address concerns. I would think this is the type of thing they could have done with Project Moon. Again you (not just you but anyone making a post or video like this)need to watch where this information is coming from, there is a huge push from misogynists to mainstream this narrative of “greedy unions” going after PM for purely monetary concerns. Recently it looks like “foreign youtubers” are asking these guys on the typical incel messageboards for their “opinions” on the issue. (?)

Police inundated with complaints [Korea Daily] An animator who was criticized for drawing a so-called "pinched hand" in a promotional video for Nexon's game has sued malicious posters, and the police have decided not to press charges against them, leading to a flood of complaints. (Archive link)
According to the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission's "Civil Complaint Big Data at a Glance" on Aug. 6, there were 1,428 complaints filed with the National Police Agency as of 3 p.m. that day. The number of complaints received on the 5th, the day the police made the decision not to extradite, was 2,305, meaning that 3,733 complaints were filed in just two days.
The top keywords for the complaints included "victim," "police station," "index finger," "dismissal," (불송치) "Nexon," and "index finger.” 'Logical conclusion', the reason for the police's non-remand, was also among the top eight complaint keywords.
The 'Issue of the Day', which analyzes the keywords of the complaints received on the day, also showed the voices of citizens complaining about the police's decision to deport them. The top spot on 'Today's Issue' was taken by 'Report illegal parking on sidewalk', which usually receives a lot of complaints, but the second spot was 'Condemn Seocho Police Station Investigation Team 14'. In fifth place was 'Nexon's complaint about the pinched hand'.
Tumblr media
The reason for the flood of complaints to the National Police Agency is that the police decided not to file a complaint by Ms. A, an animator who was victimized by the so-called 'pinched hand' controversy.
Ms. A participated in the creation of a promotional animation for Nexon's game, which became controversial when some users suspected that the animation was intentionally designed to show a pinched hand, a “male-hating sign”. The animator who drew the scene in question turned out to be a different male animator.
Ms. A filed charges of defamation under the Information and Communication Network Act and obscenity using communication media under the Sexual Violence Punishment Act, but the police concluded that the criticism directed at A did not constitute a crime, stating that "the logical conclusion of the suspects' criticism towards the complainant is recognized as acceptable."
The police also noted that "Ms. A had posted Twitter posts in the past that appeared to sympathize with feminists," and that "it is currently taboo in South Korea to use the 'pinched hand gesture' in corporate advertisements."
In response, some social media users are complaining, saying, "We strongly condemn the Seocho Police Station," and "The Seocho Police Station's sexist and biased investigation is a violation of the duties of an investigative agency that should be neutral and objective."

Mind boggling update on the Studio Ppuri case. I’ve included some of the many shocked QRTs of the article tweet. if you read some of the previous posts here recently, this is the female animator who the KGCS helped keep her job and press charges against her harassers. similar to vellmori she was targeted by incels for a piece of work she didn’t create. it seems the pigs who looked over the animator’s case think that all the stalking, harassment, graphic death threats & more are justified “criticism” and “just kinda rude” things she should deal with “because she’s a feminist.” They’re even bold enough to mention she wasn’t even the animator for the scene. They further mention that it’s “common to consider the pinched finger as taboo,” as if it’s relevant to this case. This is also not what happened with the animation. Studio Ppuri with the help of KGCS literally set up public meetings where they fielded questions regarding these animations and explained how frames like this worked. Obviously some random male animator in his 40s isn’t secretly sneaking in a joke symbol from a defunct website to call your dick small, dipshit. If you need a refresher with everything going on with this you can check this blog’s studio ppuri tag for more. I’m concerned about this woman’s health and safety, there can be significant long term psychological and physical tolls on your health from high stress, in this case bc of the unbelievable amount of harassment she has faced - these guys showing up to her workplace looking for her, thinking they doxxed her but it’s one of her coworkers, 500+ threats, now these fucking pigs saying it’s her fault, even all of this being all over the news can’t be easy. I also hope harassment doesn’t ramp up even more.

"Solidarity overturned the decision, we will watch police reinvestigation" interview with victim of ‘pinched-fingers’ case (archive link)
Tumblr media
(Seocho police station)
this is mtl of the article that I’ve edited. you can click the link and see the original, if there’s any glaring issues lmk and I’ll edit the post ✍️.
The victim of the Nexon MapleStory pinched finger (🤏) incident responded to the Seoul Seocho Police Station's decision to re-investigate her case, saying, "I recognize that many people's attention is focused on this, and I ask for a clean and thorough investigation. Even though the re-investigation is underway, we don't know what will happen, so we will continue to watch it carefully," she said.
In a written response on the afternoon of the 7th, victim A said, "I thought it would never be overturned, but I think it was the solidarity of many people that made it happen."
"My first thought is to thank them for their solidarity. I didn't realize that there would be thousands of complaints (against the Seocho Police Station)," she said, continuing, "I couldn't have done it alone. I will continue to work hard and do whatever I can to help," she stressed.
"I'm happy yet nervous at the same time. I think the police should have been more cautious in their initial decision to not extradite," she said, adding, "If they were able to admit that they were wrong two days after the news broke, I wish they would have taken a little more time to consider (a full investigation) from the beginning.”
“How Solidarity Protects Me"
Ms. A also emphasized that "solidarity with other people is the solution to healing oneself."
"After (the incident), I couldn't ignore the stories of people who were affected similarly to me, and I tried to understand their pain and offered my support in any way I could," she said. "I started several activities, including regular donations, to give back the solidarity I received, and I live every day trying to become a better person."
"When I give other victims the comfort I wanted to receive during (the incident), my condition also improves," she said, adding, "Solidarity is how I protect and heal myself."
Ms. A was also victimized online, with her personal info being circulated as an employee (of studio ppuri) even though she did not draw the so-called "pinched hand". Malicious posts insulting her were also frequently posted.
On June 14, A. filed a complaint to the Seocho Police Station for 41 online posts on charges of defamation under the Information and Communication Network Act (정보통신망법상 명예훼손), stalking (스토킹처벌법), violation of the Special Act on Punishment of Sexual Offenses (obscenity using communication media) (성폭력범죄 처벌 등에 관한 특례법 위반(통신매체이용음란) ), and insult (모욕). However, the Seocho Police Station dismissed all of Ms. A's complaints, citing reasons such as she had "sympathized with feminism."
When the case was first reported on, online collective complaints to "correct the sexist rhetoric" as well as criticism from the political sphere erupted. The Seocho Police Station, which continued to deny any problems until the following day, the 6th, saying that "it was due to the misunderstandings they (A's company) caused with their response that people expressed their opinions," admitted that "the investigation was insufficient" and announced in a press release on the afternoon of the 7th that it was "planning to conduct a re-investigation."

[Exclusive] 'Nexon 🤏 Witch Hunt' Victim: "Police Justified Femi Attack…Daily Life Stopped" (archive link) [Interview] Victim A: "We need to end the pinched fingers suppression…I will appeal to the police and fight to the end"
A victim of the 'Nexon Forefinger Witch Hunt' complained in an interview with The Pressian that the police investigation justified the accusations against her as "logical conclusions" and that she was suffering from pain that made it difficult to go about her daily life. However, she vowed to appeal to the police and fight to the end, saying, "I want to stop the situation where all creators are forced to censor the shape of their fingers as soon as possible."
The online harassment of Ms. A began in November last year, shortly after it became known that a pinched forefinger hand appeared in a promotional video for MapleStory, a game operated by Nexon Korea. The video was produced by B (Studio Ppuri), an animation company that A works for, and it was claimed that A, who had posted feminism-related posts on social networking services (SNS) in the past, had inserted awkward hand gestures to demean men, especially in male-centric communities.
However, the animator who drew the controversial scene was a male artist in his 40s who was outsourced by Company B, and the other scenes with the index finger were also the work of male artists. Nevertheless, the attack against A continued. In the two months after the incident, A collected more than 3,500 online harassment messages, including sexual insults and harassment that continued into this year.
She filed a complaint with the police for 308 of the most serious cases, 267 and 41 respectively. "The pinched hand is a natural hand gesture for drawing," she said, and she wanted to "stop the situation where all creators have to censor their pinched hand as soon as possible."
However, the Seocho Police Station decided not to prosecute the 41 cases filed by Ms. A, citing reasons such as "it is currently taboo to use index fingers in corporate advertisements," "Ms. A is not the person in charge of the drawings involved, but there is evidence that she sympathizes as a feminist," and "it is obvious that the investigation is fruitless."
After receiving the Seocho Police Station's non-sentencing notice, Ms. A described her condition, saying that she was "unable to work all day" and that to this day she "stops thinking, easily forgets things and memories, and suffers from lethargy."
The police described the bullying directed at her as "logical" and she said she could not understand the police's decision to side with the perpetrators. "If we don't set an example for the perpetrators, the number of people who harass others will increase thanks to anonymity, and the level of harassment will become more severe," she said, adding that she will appeal the case so that the perpetrators can be punished. The following is the full interview with Mr. A, which was conducted at a cafe in Guro-gu, Seoul, on the 2nd of this month.
"Is it okay to be harassed because you're suspected of drawing an index finger?"
Q: What is your current state of health?
A: I have been going through a difficult time since the incident. I suffered from severe depression and am still seeing a psychiatrist and taking medication. I've also become very afraid of meeting people, and when I go outside, I'm afraid that someone will recognize me, and I walk faster because I feel like they're looking at me when I walk by.
I have been unable to work, especially on the day I received the notification of the outcome of the investigation. Even now, I often stop thinking and forget things and memories. I am constantly tearing up involuntarily, and I feel scared because I don't know how to solve the problem in the future.
Q: Why did you decide to press charges against the perpetrators?
A: The pinched hand is a natural hand gesture in the animation industry when drawing. However, when the pinched hand became a target of criticism, it reached a point where creators in the industry, including myself, were forced to censor all hand shapes. I felt that the only thing I could do to stop this was to sue the perpetrators and make sure they were punished.
Q: The police decided not to prosecute, saying that "the use of the index finger in corporate advertisements is taboo in the current climate."
A: I don't think there's anything wrong with the index finger, but there's no denying the current controversial situation. However, the mere suspicion of drawing a pinched finger can lead to severe levels of harassment, and law enforcement should not come in and say, "It's okay to criticize the creator because it's taboo in the industry.” The police are supposed to be equal to everyone and distinguish between harm and victimization. But the police rationalized the attack on me because I had posted feminism-related posts on social media, even though I hadn't drawn a claw hand. It's like saying, 'Feminists deserve to be attacked.
Q: Do you plan to file an appeal?
A: Yes. If the police drop the charges because they are not investigating, the perpetrators will not face the consequences of their actions. This will encourage more and more people to attack others, fueled by anonymity. Someone needs to catch the perpetrators and make an example of them. I'm scared of what the future holds, but I'm determined to fight to the end.
Q: What are some of the cases you've brought up that you really want to see prosecuted?
A: People who are convinced that I put the pinched hand in the video because I'm a 'feminist'. These people attacked me for being a feminist, not for drawing the hand. I've also had people send me abusive and sexually explicit comments on social media, not just in the community. People who see feminism as a weakness or use it as a means of harassment, saying that feminists deserve to be criticized, must be punished.
Q: What do you want to say about the 🤏 witch hunt in the gaming industry and in Korea?
A: The pinched hand is just a natural hand gesture that can be found in many videos. It's so common in everyday life that you can easily find photos of lawmakers in the shape of a pinched hand. Nevertheless, the index finger witch hunt has spread beyond the gaming industry and into live-action advertising. If we don't stop it, the phenomenon of capturing a moment in time and then harassing creators who claim to have spotted a 🤏 with a specific intent will continue to happen. I hope that society will realize the seriousness of the witch hunt and that police and companies will step up to the plate and put an end to it as soon as possible.
