Concert Review 3- Rachel.

Concert I attended: General Student Recital. 

I went to the General Student Recital concert on October 17th. The space was in Wallenberg hall so there was plenty of room for anyone who wanted to come. The students performed on the staged, the students came in one at a time to perform. The hall was kind of full and there were a lot of music played. The attendance were mostly students and a few professors. Most of the students that came played an instruments were dressed up in business casual attire, fancy dresses etc. The performance was filled with positive energy from the students and the audience. There was a lot of movement in this concert, the students walk on the stage and arranged their music and they bow down after he or she perform. The audiences were restricted to sit, the chairs were uncomfortable and there were no breaks. This concert was a bit different because different students performed different music.  

Allessandra West started to play her song by taking a deep breath. The song she decided to play was called “Violin Sonatina in G major, Op. 100, B.183” by Antonín Dvorák. The piece was widely dynamic for the expressive purpose throughout the song and it was kind of subito because the music suddenly changes from home dynamics to another. This piece is polyphony because two or more melodies are combined. The harmony is polyphony because the piece of song is played by two instrument with accompanying chords.  The instrumentation was the piano and violin. Both instruments made the song sound unique in a way; the piano was loud and violin was fast but calm at the same time. The rhythm was complex and filled with fast moving notes throughout the music. And it had a rubato which I thought was interesting because it had expressive quickening without an overall pace. The meter of this piece is duple meter. The form of this piece was miniature programmatic form

The second piece that I enjoyed was called “Quartette [Allegro de Concert]” by Carly Florio. The four singers started to play the song by testing if their saxophone was good enough to use. The instrumentation of this piece was the Saxophone but it was in soprano, alto, tenor, baritone. The dynamic started loud and stayed loud throughout the song . This piece was great because I have never seen anyone played a saxophone before. This piece had fast tempo and  it was Conjunt because it  was smooth and connected melody that moves principally by small intervals. This piece of song was major, it just sounds like a happy song. The surprising part is when the player knew how to begin at the same time; I thought that was surprising and interesting. I think this piece of the song rhythm was free flowing. The harmony is Polyphony. I think the meter is triple meter. The form of this piece is also programmatic form or dance like form. .

I kind of knew what to expect from the concert because I  have been to student recital before but I did not know the students was that talented. I was really surprise when I heard my peers performing, I thought every one of them did excellent and they are really talented. I thought everything was great about this student recital. I enjoyed myself at this concert because the piece of the songs they played were interesting to listen to and I leaned that students at Augustana College are really talented which makes me excited to see my peers doing wonderful things. I would definitely attend another concert like this in the future.

In case you were wondering... here’s something I do when I’m not at #Pole 💁🏻‍♀️ I’m a musician - most of you know I’m a classical vocalist/opera singer as that’s what I went to college for and I occasionally gig as well - but I sometimes also like to break out my belty chops and sing with a live band for student drum and guitar recitals at the music school I used to work for. It’s much better for them to play with a band that can follow them rather than missing a beat and trying to play catch-up with a pre-recorded backing track. Plus it’s more fun.
