Stubborn Hearts | 6
Tumblr media
Summary: Reader (Firecracker, Sunshine) has been in love with Bradley since she was a young girl. Growing up the two were inseparable, apart from short periods of time when she was on the West Coast with the Kazanskys. One faithful decision by her dad to block Bradley from going to the Naval Academy resulted in a huge rift between father and daughter and left her without Bradley in her life. Now all grown up, she’s called back to the west coast at the same time as her father and Bradley. Her mission, according to her dying godfather, is to mend fences with her dad and Bradley. Can stubborn hearts be healed?

The next several days were filled with making arrangements and helping your aunt. You made it through on autopilot. Each day blended into the next. Your dad, Bradley, Jake, Shay and the rest of the squad had been in and out checking in on you, helping out where they could when they weren’t training.
Finally the day of the funeral arrived. You were dreading it, but at the same time it came as a relief. It was the closure you needed.
You sat with your aunt and cousins in the front row. Mav stood with the other Naval officers  in full dress blues, paying respect to a fellow Naval aviator, colleague, friend. You kept your eyes locked on the casket in front of you, memorizing all of the details, trying to keep yourself together. A picture of your uncle was set up on one side of the casket with various floral arrangements on display.
The time arrived for the handing off of the folded flag to the surviving family members. Your dad stepped away from where he’d been standing at attention, carefully took the folded up flag from the sailors that had folded it, before slowly walking over to where you were all seated. He slowly bent, gently placing the flag into Sarah’s outstretched hands, his jaw clenched to hold back the emotion. His eyes were shining with unshed tears as he stood back up. In the distance, a service member started to play the taps as the funeral came to an end. Overhead, jets flew in formation over the funeral as one last salute to a fallen aviator, one jet veering off alone, leaving an empty space in the formation. The sight of which, combined with the taps was your undoing. You’d been able to keep yourself together up to that point, wanting to stay strong for your aunt and cousins. The tears flowed freely now as you choked back the sobs that were trying to burst from you.
One by one, people started to come by to say final goodbyes and offer words of support to Sarah and the kids. You stood, body trembling with emotion, wishing you were anywhere but there in that moment. You looked to the sky, aching to be flying, to feel closer to the Uncle you already missed with everything in you.
You glanced up to where your dad was now placing a pair of aviator wings on top of the casket. Even knowing it was coming you still flinched when he pounded the wings into the casket with his fist. One final send off to Thomas “Iceman” Kazansky.
You felt your knees start to buckle, but before you could collapse, strong arms wrapped around you, pulling you up.
“I’ve got you, Sunshine.” Bradley whispered, his breath warming your ear as he spoke. He carefully turned you so he could hold you against him, one hand on your back, supporting you, the other threading into your hair providing comfort as you laid your head against his shoulder. He continued to hold you as your other friends filtered by, gently offering their support.
“We’ve got everything set up at the house for people to gather.” Penny announced for your aunt. “You are welcome to stop in and visit.”
You looked to where your dad was still standing by the casket, looking lost. You knew this was killing him inside.
“Do you want to head back to the house, Sweets?” Jake asked, standing with his arm around Shay.
“I’m going to check on my dad first.” You replied quietly, slowly pulling back from Bradley’s embrace.
“We’ll wait for you here, then head to the house when you’re ready.” Bradley said, giving you a reassuring smile of support.
You walked over to your dad, putting your arms around his middle and hugging him. He immediately wrapped his own arms around you, returning the embrace.
“I love you, Dad” You said, head resting on his chest, taking comfort in his warmth.
“I love you too, Firecracker.” he replied, “You doing ok?”
“No… but I will be.” You answered, as honestly as you could. “You?”
“Same.” He replied, “Ready to head back to the house?”
“Yeah. Ready as I’ll ever be.” You replied, “Are you riding with Penny”?
“Yeah.” He replied, “Are you riding with Bradley or one of the others?”
“I think Bradley.” You said, “Jake and Shay offered too.”
“I’m glad things are at least better between you and Bradley.” Mav said, offering a sad smile. You knew the fact that there was still a rift there, bothered him a lot.
“I don’t know where things stand, honestly, I’m just happy to have his support right now.” You replied, “I hope after everything settles it won’t be back to radio silence.”
“Judging by what I’ve seen and the way he’s currently looking at you… I don’t think you need to worry, Firecracker.” Mav replied, glancing in Bradley’s direction.

The driveway was already full of cars, with the overflow parked on the street surrounding the house when Bradley pulled the Bronco onto the street. You were not up to a lot of people, but knew your aunt needed a buffer to help her field all of the people too.
“I’ll drop you off then find a spot to park, Sunshine.” Bradley said, “Hangman said that  he and Shay are waiting at the front porch for you. Phoenix, Bob, Fanboy and Payback are on their way over now too.”
“Thank you Brad.”  You said, quietly, “For everything.”
“Sunshine, I wish you’d stop thanking me.” He said gently, smiling over at you. “I know things were shitty before… and timing sucks with the mission coming up… but you and I are long overdue for a serious talk.”
“I know you’re right… but can we please wait?” You asked, knowing your heart was too broken to add any more heartache. “After the mission and you’re back… we’ll talk.”
“Promise?” He asked, holding his pinky finger out to you. You let out a laugh at the childlike gesture you’d used to do.
“Promise.” You agreed, linking your pinky with his. He brought your joined hands up, turning so your hand was facing him and kissed your joined pinkies.
“Holding you to it, Sunshine.” He said, smiling. “You ok to hop out while I park?”
“Yeah.” You answered, opening the door, “I’ll wait at the porch with Jake and Shay for you.”
“Ok. I’ll be right there.” He replied.
You got out and headed up the driveway, winding through parked cars on your way.
“Hey, Y/N.” Shay greeted, hugging you. “Where’s Rooster?”
“Parking the Bronco.” You said, “It’s  busier here than I was expecting. Makes sense though. Everyone loved Uncle Tommy.”
“My turn.” Jake said, reaching out for you, “Hug time, Sweets.” You smiled, stepping into Jake’s outstretched arms. He held tight, as if he could glue the broken pieces back together through the hug.
“Do hugs have the same magical healing powers as chocolate milkshakes?” You asked, smiling.
“Yup!” He replied, dropping a kiss on your head before pulling away. “Or maybe it’s just me that’s magical.”
“You’re…something.” You teased, “I dunno if magical is the term I’d use.”
“Ouch” Jake said, grabbing his chest, as if you’d shot him. “That hurts, Sweets.”
“You’ll live.” Shay laughed, “Are you ready to go inside? I think your dad and Penny are here.”
“I told Bradley I’d wait for him.” You replied, “He said the rest of the squad was on their way too.”
“We’re here.” Bradley said, leading the group up the drive. He stood next to you while the others greeted you and gave you hugs, then wrapped his arm around your shoulders, holding you to him. “Ready to go in?”
“Yeah.” You replied, “I think so.”
Once inside you found your aunt, hugging her and asking if she needed you to do anything. She let you know that the caterers and Penny had everything under control and to just try to enjoy the company of your friends.
You all ended up outside where there was more room. You pulled all of the extra patio chairs to the table so that everyone could sit together. At some point, food appeared on the table along with drinks. You were engrossed in the conversations around you, you didn’t know who had brought it over.
“Try to eat something, Sunshine.” Bradley said, pushing a plate willed with your favorite foods towards you, “You need to keep your strength up too.”
You humored him, nibbling at the food, until he was satisfied that you’d eaten. He remained by your side the whole night, not going unnoticed by the rest of the squad.

The days following the funeral found you feeling lost. Your aunt and cousins had decided to take some time away, finding it too hard to be in the house without Tom. They went to stay with Sarah’s sister for a couple of weeks before they’d return home and resume life, trying to find their new normal. Sarah had been reluctant to leave you, saying she felt she was abandoning you. You’d been quick to reassure her you’d be fine and that she needed to think about what was best for her and the kids.
You weren’t sure what to do with yourself though now that you didn’t have anyone needing your help. Thankfully, Frank called one day saying he needed a charter pilot to fly a group of people to Las Vegas and drop them off. It would be an easy  one way drop off for you, and you’d fly back right after dropping them so you were quick to agree.
You sent your dad a text letting him know you were taking the charter.
You: Hey, Dad. Frank called with a charter group that needs to be flown to Las Vegas today. Going to take it, but wanted to let you know where I was if you needed me. Love you XX
You were about to open the group text you’d had going with Bradley, Jake and Shay when your dad sent a quick reply.
Dad: Fly safe, Firecracker. Text or call when you get home so I know you’re safe. Love you :)
You: Will do. Fly safe today too! <3
You opened the group text and sent off a quick text to them as well.
You: Flying to Vegas today, I was offered a charter group and I’m going a little stir crazy. I’ll be back tonight sometime. Stay outta trouble…all of you!
Bradley: Be safe, Sunshine. You’re precious cargo. <3  Want to grab dinner and watch a movie when you’re back?
Jake: VEGAS?? WITHOUT ME? Rude.  Be safe, Sweets. Bradshaw, it’s not smooth to ask a girl out on text.
Shay: Jake, shut it. Leave him alone :P  Y/N, have fun and be safe. Lunch tomorrow?
Bradley: Yeah, Bagman, shut it. But, seriously Sunshine… Dinner? Movie? I’ll even let you pick a sappy chick flick.
You: LMAO, y’all are what I needed today. Bradley- Sure- - Especially since I get to pick the movie. I’ll text when I’m on my way back. Jake- you literally are a pilot as well and could fly to Vegas whenever you have leave. Take Shay ;) ;) Also… NOT A DATE… leave Bradley alone.  Shay- yes! Lunch sounds great.
Jake: Yeah, Rooster, it’s not a date! Keep it in your pants!
You: OMG! I’m leaving to go earn a living now. Shay, have a great day at work. Flyboys- be safe and don’t do stupid pilot shit. I expect you both in one piece after training today.
Bradley: Yes Ma’am. See you tonight.
Jake: Sweets, you know I don’t make promises I can’t keep.
You: JACOB “I DON’T KNOW YOUR MIDDLE NAME” SERESIN! I SAID ONE PIECE!
Jake: Yes, Ma’am.
You laughed, making note to find out from someone what his real middle name was. You hoped it was good.
You had found out from Frank there was no real requirement for attire when chartering flights so you’d decided on simple jeans and a t-shirt. You grabbed the bomber jacket your Uncle had custom made for you just in case it got cold while flying, but also because it felt like you were taking a piece of him with you.
You headed to the airstrip, wanting to have extra time to familiarize yourself with a new plane and to look at the flight plans. Frank was helpful in getting you situated in the plane you’d be flying as well as helping you stock the plane with water bottles and getting it ready for the group. You would be taking a group of 4 to Vegas. Hopefully they weren’t a wild group and didn't plan to pregame with drinks before flying. Not everyone could handle alcohol and flying.
Soon after you were all set and ready to go the group arrived, much to your relief they seemed super chill so it would be an easy flight.
By the time you got back late that afternoon, you were definitely starving and ready to get back to the house and hang out with Bradley.
You’d sent him a text when you left Vegas but he must have still been training or busy because he hadn’t answered.
After taxiing the plane to the correct hanager, you tied it down and went to find Frank to close out the day.
“How did it go?” He asked when you walked into the office. “Any problems?”
“Smooth trip there and back.” You confirmed, “They were a fun group. Very excited to be going to Vegas. I think one of them mentioned eloping.”
“To be young and carefree again.” He laughed, “Let me get your post flight paperwork to sign. If you’re up to it, I should have a few more charters like this one to throw your way in the next couple of weeks.”
“I’m interested.” You said, “I loved flying charters out East. I’d love to be able to do the same out here.”
“Ok, I’ll add you to my regular crew to call.” He confirmed. “Also, I’m really sorry about your Uncle, kid. I meant to say something earlier but got busy with preflight stuff. You need anything, let me know.”
“Thank you, Frank.” You replied, “Just staying busy will help.”
“I can do that.” He promised. “Just sign off on these and you’re free to go today.”
You quickly signed the paperwork, thanking him again before heading out to where you’d parked.
Inside the Jeep, you turned your phone off plane mode and found waiting messages.
The first text was from Shay.
Shay: Hey! Hope today went well! Just wanted to remind you NO DATES WITH BRADLEY until he explains his asshole era when he ghosted you…and apologizes and begs for forgiveness. Full on, groveling on his knees, flowers, whole 9 yards.
You laughed, loving how protective she was. It was a good reminder though. You could see yourself easily  just forgiving over a decade of bad behavior and hurt and setting yourself up to being left behind and hurt again. This wasn’t his permanent base, and you had to remember that.
You: It went great! I’ll be flying more charters now, so your girl sort of officially is employed again lol. Thanks for the reminder. While I don’t know if I’ll make him grovel on his knees… I do know that I deserve an explanation… a better one than the bullshit one he tried to give me. I WILL accept flowers though.
Second text was from Bradley.
Bradley: Hey Sunshine, just grounded the jet for the day. Hitting the showers then I’ll grab food before heading over.
The text was sent 25 minutes ago. You decided  to call instead of texting so you could start driving home.
“You back?” Bradley asked when he picked up. You could tell by his voice something was wrong.
“I am headed back to the house now.” You replied, “Did you have a bad day?”
“Not necessarily bad. Not great… I dunno.” He replied, “I’ll tell you over dinner.”
“What did ya get?” You asked, “I’m starving.”
“I grabbed Chinese. Extra noodles. I ordered the large combos too, figuring you’d end up stealing mine.” He said, remembering you loved lo mein and had always ended up eating from his plate as well as yours. You just happened to like his choices and wanted to taste.
“You’re my hero!” You exclaimed, falling even deeper in love with the man. You were in trouble. Not a date. Not a date. NOT. A. DATE!
“I can only hope.” He replied, “I’ll see you when you get here. I am just pulling in now.”
“Ok, there’s a key under the planter. Go on in.” You said. “Be there in about fifteen minutes.”
You pulled into the driveway, parking next to Bradley’s Bronco and headed inside. He was getting plates and drinks put on the table with the takeout opened up. You set your stuff down next to the door and took in the domestic sight in front of you.
“Honey, I’m home.” You teased, unable to resist. “That smells amazing.”
“Hey, Sunshine.” He smiled, walking over to you and pulling you into a hug. “Do you need to change or shower or anything or do you want to eat first?”
“Food please.” You said, “I’ll shower after dinner before we watch a movie.”
“Right this way, ma’am.” He said, taking your and leading you to the table. You both sat down across from one another and started dishing up the food. You ended up sharing both of the meals, making it more of a family style dinner.
Conversation stayed pretty neutral over dinner, keeping everything light and simply catching up on each other’s lives. Once dinner was over you both cleared away the containers and dishes, wiping down the table afterwards.
“Ok, I’m going to jump in the shower and change really quickly, then it’s movie time.” You said, “Make yourself at home, I’ll be back in 10!”
“Take your time, Sunshine.” He laughed, “What movie are we watching?”
“PRINCESS BRIDE!” You said immediately, it had been one the two of you had watched a lot when you were younger.
“I’ll get it set up on the TV while you shower.” He said, smirking at your choice.
You ran upstairs to your room, stripping out of your sweaty, grimy clothes once you hit your room. You grabbed a pair of leggings and an old t-shirt that you were pretty sure had been Bradleys at one point in its lifetime, and headed into the bathroom. You pulled your hair into a messy bun, not wanting to mess with drying it tonight, and jumped into the hot shower spray, washing away the day.
Once out of the shower, you dried off and applied lotion to your body and moisturizer to your face then pulled the clothes on before making your way back downstairs to the living room. Bradley was on the couch, frowning at his phone like it had offended him.
“Did your phone insult your taste in Hawaiian shirts?” You asked, plopping down onto the couch next to him, pulling your feet under you as you landed. “Or maybe the mustache?”
Bradley startled when you plopped down onto the couch, not having heard you come in.
“Jesus, Sunshine.” He exclaimed, “We need to get you a bell or something.”
“Wow, you spook easily in your old age.” You laughed, “Everything ok though?”
“First of all, there is nothing wrong with my Hawaiian shirts and you said you liked the mustache.” He clarified, “Secondly, I am not old. I’m only a few years older than you.”
“Umm you’re in your 30’s” You pointed out, playfully. “I’m still in my 20’s. Therefore, you’re old and I’m not.”
“Well then, how do you feel about old men?” He asked, winking at you. You felt butterflies instantly erupt in your belly at the flirtatious tone of his voice. You weren’t sure you could handle flirty Bradley with your heart intact.  Stay strong, Y/N. STAY. STRONG!
“Well Jake is already taken by Shay, so guess I’m out of luck.” You stated, schooling your features to look serious. Bradley, however, saw right through you. He launched a tickle attack in retaliation until you were begging for him to stop, laughing so hard you couldn't catch your breath.
“Take it back, Sunshine.” He ordered, giving his terms of surrender. “Say you’re not interested in Hangman.”
“Ok ok!” You relented, “I take it back. Jake is just a really good friend.”
“That’s what I thought.” He replied, smugly.  “Seresin is not your type, Sunshine.”
“I knew that 10 seconds into meeting him.” You agreed, “But it’s fun to rile you up.”
“You’re still a brat, then huh?” He said, fake glaring at you.
“Takes one to know one.” You chirped back, playfully. You’d missed this easy banter with Bradley. It felt good to have at least this part of your relationship back on even footing. You knew the two of you absolutely had to talk. You knew, if you wanted your friendship to have any hope, you needed to fess up about your feelings for him. But none of that needed to happen tonight.
Bradley, pulled you into his side, tucking you against him, then started the movie. The beginning credits started to roll, you took a minute to glance up at Bradley. Something was clearly bothering him. Deciding the movie could wait a minute you sat up, reaching for the remote to pause the movie.
“Ok…” You said, turning your body so you were sitting up and facing him, “I know it’s been a very long time since we’ve spent any kind of time together, but your tells are the same as they were back when we were teenagers. What’s wrong?”
“The mission got moved up.” He sighed, “We leave tomorrow morning.”
“Wow.” You said, your heart dropping into your stomach. You wouldn’t lie, you were terrified for him to leave. Judging by the bits and pieces you’d gotten from your uncle and dad you knew this was a very dangerous mission with the real possibility that someone wasn’t coming back. “That’s… soon. Have pilots been chosen specifically yet?”
“Not yet… the team leader will choose once we’re on board the carrier.” He replied, his voice shaking. “Sunshine… the parameters have changed… Mav’s team leader. He’ll be flying the mission.”
You felt all of the blood drain from your face. Your heart started to beat erratically in your chest. Breathing suddenly became nearly impossible to do. You could feel panic flooding your system, freezing you in your spot. You’d just lost your Godfather. The man who had been a second father to you your entire life. You couldn’t survive losing your dad on top of that.
“Sweetheart. I need you to breathe for me,” Bradley said, easily picking you up and placing you in his lap, holding you as you gasped for air. “Follow my breathing, Sunshine. Breathe with me. In and out slowly.”
You focused on his breathing and tried to match your own to his. Finally, it didn’t feel like you were suffocating anymore, your breathing evening out, in sync with Bradley’s.
“That’s my girl.” He said, “Slow deep breaths. You’re ok.”
“I’m scared, Bradley.” You admitted, your voice small. “I can’t lose my dad. I can’t. I know things are crappy and he’s not your favorite person, but he’s my dad. He’s all I have. I can’t lose him.”
“You won’t.” He promised, “We won’t let anything happen to him, Sunshine.”
“You can’t make that promise.” You said, tears starting to fall, as you sank further into him.  “Brad… I can’t lose you either. I just got you back.”
“You won’t lose either of us, Sunshine.” He said, firmly. “I am not leaving you again. I was an idiot to walk away the first time. There won’t be a second. I know I owe you a really fucking good explanation and probably the biggest apology in the history of apologies… And I swear on everything that as soon as I am back we will talk.”
“I swear to God, if you don’t come back home, Bradley Bradshaw, I will never forgive you.” You said, firmly. “And I expect flowers with that apology. Shay gave me the idea, and it’s a good one. Lots of flowers.”
“Flowers… I can do flowers.” He promised, chuckling.
“Brad?” You asked
“What’s up, Sunshine?” He replied, pulling back a bit so he could look down at you as you were still laid against his chest, in his lap.
“If you're leaving tomorrow, shouldn’t you be getting everything ready and getting a good night's sleep, instead of here?” You asked. “If something happens to you because you were here and not well rested, I’ll never be able to live with myself.”
“There is absolutely nowhere else I’d rather be right now.” He assured you. “I wouldn’t have been able to rest anyway until seeing you. I packed my gear and got everything ready before leaving base.”
“Do you have to be back on base tonight?” You asked, selfishly not wanting to let him out of your sight.
“No.” he replied softly, “I have to report and be ready to fly out to the carrier by 0530 tomorrow morning.”
“Can you stay?” You asked. “If you want to, please don’t feel you have to…”
“Sunshine, I’d love nothing more.” He replied, interrupting your rambling. “Do you want to watch the movie now?”
“Yes please.” You said, moving back to the spot next to him, after he reluctantly let you up. He quickly adjusted the two of you so you were back to being cuddled into his side like you were before he’d dropped the news on you.  He leaned down, kissing the top of your head before grabbing the remote and hitting play.
You must have fallen asleep during the movie at some point because you were jarred awake when your phone started to ring on the table in front of you. Bradley carefully leaned forward with you still curled into his side to grab it for you, handing it to you once he’d leaned back.
“It’s your dad.” he said, “I’ll go get us some snacks and drinks while you talk to him.”
“Ok.” You said, voice rough from sleep. “Hurry back.”
“Hey, Dad.” You answered, picking up the phone.
“Hey, Firecracker.” He replied, his voice sounding sad. “Are you busy? I was going to stop over to talk to you.”
“I’m home.” You replied, “Dad, Bradley is here. He filled me in.”
“Oh.” He replied, “Are you… ok?”
“I’m scared.” You said honestly, “The two people who mean the most to me are about to fly off on some super secret mission that’s dangerous enough to mean someone might not come back.”
“I’m sorry, Baby Girl.” He said, “I had to show the higher ups it could be done in the parameters we’d set. They were going to send them off alone with directives that would have gotten them all killed.”
“I know, Dad.” You replied, “It’s ok. I don’t love it, but I love you. I know this is the shit you live for. It’s who you are.”
“It’s not all I live for” He said, “Nor is the most important to me. YOU are more important to me. Are you planning to come to base in the morning? I need to see you before we leave.”
“Yeah. I’ll be there.” you replied, “I’m not letting you leave without seeing you. I love you, Dad.”
“I love you too, Firecracker.” He replied, “More than you will ever realize. I will see you in the morning.”
“See you in the morning” You confirmed.
Bradley sat down as you hung up the phone, gently taking it from your hands and placing it back on the coffee table.
“Come here, sweetheart.” He said gently, pulling you into him once more. “It really will be ok.”
“I’m holding you to that.” You said. “What did you find for snacks?” You needed to distract yourself from your current reality.
“I found popcorn, M&Ms, and skittles.” He said, laughing “Apparently you did the shopping last time?”
“Maybe” You replied, not wanting to admit you still had the taste buds of a kid when it came to snacks.
“Not a fan of Twizzlers anymore?” He asked, handing you the bowl of popcorn and putting the candy within reach.
“I already ate them.” You said, tossing a kernel of popcorn at him.
“It’s comforting to know that some things don’t change.” He laughed, picking up the popcorn missile you’d launched and eating it.
Bradley started the movie again and you watched it through to the end this time without falling asleep. You’d both snacked your way through the popcorn and candy, finishing before the movie ended, content to remain snuggled together.
“It’s getting late, you need sleep.” You said, standing up from the couch and stretching. You grabbed his hand pulling him up from the couch too. “Follow me, Flyboy.”
“Where to, Sunshine?” He asked, “I can just crash down here on the couch…”
“Nope. That’s a stupid idea.” You said. “There are spare rooms upstairs. You’re not sleeping on the couch before flying off onto a dangerous mission.”
“Yes, Ma’am.” He replied, “Lead the way.”
You took him upstairs and showed him to the guest room that just happened to be next to your room. You showed him where the extra towels and everything were before hugging him goodnight and heading to your room.
You laid in bed tossing and turning, unable to turn off your brain. Thoughts of someone showing up in a dress uniform to tell you your dad wasn’t coming home, or your dad coming back and telling you Bradley wasn’t coming home flooded your mind. You didn’t even realize you had started to cry, until a soft knock sounded at your door.
“Sunshine?” Bradley said gently, slowly opening the door. “Are you ok?”
“No” You whimpered, a sob escaping your body.
“What can I do?” He asked, cautiously walking towards your bed, He didn’t want to cross any boundaries or spook you. “What do you need, Sweetheart?”
“Can you stay with me?” You asked, sitting up, wiping your eyes and trying to regain control. “Please?”
“Of course, Sunshine.” He replied moving around to the other side of the bed. You held the covers for him to slide in with you. He immediately pulled you close, wrapping you in his arms, and pulling the comforter back over both of you. This wasn’t the first time you and Bradley had shared a bed. There were many nights right after his mom had died when he had moved in with Mav and you that the two of you would end up snuggled up. You relaxed into him, your head pillowed on his chest, listening to the steady beating of his heart. Your arm draped over this stomach, his arm holding you close. He gently rubbed your back in comfort. The two of you remained silent for a moment.
“I’ve got you.” He whispered, “Close your eyes and get some sleep.”
“Thank you, Brad.” You replied, quietly.
“Nowhere I’d rather be.” He promised, “Goodnight, Angel.”
He turned his head to place a soft kiss on your head, as your eyes drifted close, finally giving into sleep.
“I swear to you, I’ll come home to you..” He whispered softly to your sleeping form, “I love you, Sunshine.”
He closed his own eyes, sinking into a deep sleep.
_____________________
Your alarm went off at 4am the next morning. You tried to grab your phone to turn it off, but found you were trapped by Bradley. During the night you’d both shifted so you were essentially intertwined together, a tangle of arms and legs. He had you tucked into him with your leg between his,  and his arms wrapped around you koala bear style. It explained why you were extremely warm. He was definitely a human furnace.
You took a moment to soak him in, memorize every freckle, line, and scar. You cataloged the way his eyelashes brushed his cheeks, how he looked so absolutely relaxed and at peace. You hated to wake him up, but he needed to get ready so he’d have time to grab all of his stuff from his barracks before reporting to duty.
“Bradley.” You said, quietly, not wanting to startle him awake. “Come on, sleepyhead. You need to get up.”
“Nope.” He grumbled, still half asleep, “They’ll be fine without me. I’m staying here.”
“I don’t think the Navy will be ok with that.” You replied, “Besides, your squad needs you. Up and at it. I’ll throw clothes on and make you some breakfast while you get ready.”
“I’m not ready.” He whispered, now fully awake, pulling you tighter to him.
“I will be right here when you get back.” You said
“Promise?” He asked
“Pinky Promise.” You replied, finding and linking your pinkies together.
You both reluctantly separated and got out of bed. You grabbed a clean change of clothes and quickly got dressed in your bathroom while Bradley went and got dressed and cleaned up in the guest bathroom.
You were downstairs making him a quick omelet and some toast when he emerged. His hair was damp, and his curls more defined. You loved the way his hair curled. At the current length it was more wavy than anything. When he let it grow longer, it would become more curled.
“That smells amazing” He said, “You honestly didn’t have to cook me anything, Sunshine. I could have grabbed something on the way.”
“There is no way in hell I’m letting you leave on a mission with a lousy fast food breakfast or even worse, a donut.” You replied, “There are a variety of coffee pods for the Keurig if you want some coffee to go with you. They’re in the cabinet.”
He walked over and pulled out a travel mug and selected a coffee pod before making himself a coffee. Once it was done, he repeated the process, selecting the flavor that had always been your favorite when you were younger. He added the flavored cream and some of the sweetener syrup to the coffee before setting in on the counter for you.
“Thank you” You smiled as he sat down at the island. “Eat up. We’ve got to get you back to base.”
“We can take the Bronco and you can just bring it back here afterwards.” He said “It’s probably safer here than on base anyway.”
“You’re going to trust me to drive your Bronco?” You gasped, playfully.
“Sunshine, I’d trust you with my life” He replied, “Speaking of which, we should go flying when I get back. You can show me your fancy pilot moves.”
“You’re on.” You agreed. “I might even let you fly her.”
“You’d trust me with your plane?” He teased, tossing your words back at you.
“I’d trust you with my life.” You parroted back to him, smiling.  “It’s time to go…”
“I know.” He sighed, “I’ve never been this torn over leaving for a mission.”
“I need you to promise me that the second you’re in that jet, your entire focus is on that mission and doing everything you need to do to stay safe.” You said.
“I promise.” He said “Until I get to the jet, can my entire focus remain on you?”
“Only half.” You laughed, “You have to focus on driving us to base and arriving in one piece.”
“You drive a hard bargain.” He smirked. “Let’s get going then, because the faster I leave the faster I get back.”

Bradley pulled onto base, heading first to the barracks to change into his flight suit and grab all of his stuff. You were content to wait in the Bronco while he got ready.
While he was inside you sent a text to Shay, assuming she was here seeing Jake off or at least awake to have said goodbye.
You: Hey, I’m on base…just checking to see if you were here or if you were Ok and if you wanted to still get lunch today?
Shay: I’m here. I brought Jake back this morning too. Yes to lunch. Where are you now?”
You: At the Barracks. Bradley needed to change into his flight suit and get his stuff. He stayed last night.
Shay: Did you two talk?
You: Not about the past. I needed his head on the mission not in the past. We’ll talk when he gets back. He’s coming out now, so see you in a few!
Shay: OK! I’ll be the one fighting tears.
You: Same
“Ok, all set.” He said, throwing his bag in the back and climbing back into the Bronco.
“You look good in a flight suit.” You said, obviously checking him out.
“Sunshine.” he groaned, dramatically “No objectifying me. I am more than a piece of meat.”
“You’re right.” You said, batting your eyelashes, “You’re also a big giant dork.”
“Ouch.” He replied, pouting. “But can I at least I’m your big giant dork?”
“Maybe.” You smiled back at him.
“I can work with maybe.” He replied. “Sunshine, before I leave… I wanted you to have this back.”
He held up your necklace that you’d given back that night the Hard Deck.
“It belongs with you. You’re my sunshine.” He said. “You don’t have to wear it if you don’t want to, I’ll understand… I just… wanted you to have it back.”
You looked at the necklace, tears forming in your eyes. You weren’t sure what would have happened to it when you left it on the table that night. With how things were left, you wouldn’t have been surprised if he’d chucked it into the ocean or just left it on the table.
“Take it with you.” You whispered, “Bring it back to me with it…and yourself… in one piece. It can be your good luck charm.”
“That’s what you really want?” He asked, knowing there was always a chance it would be lost to you.
“Yes.” You said, “I know you. You will be stubborn enough to make sure it comes back to me.”
“Ok.” He replied, carefully tucking it into his flight suit.
The rest of the squad was already gathered when the two of you arrived at the parking area outside of the hangars. Bradley parked the Bronco and the two of you got out. He grabbed his flight bag, and the two of you headed towards the rest of the group.
“Mornin’ Sweets!” Jake said, coming over and enveloping you in a hug.
“Ugh, you’re a morning person.” You complained, but smiled as you hugged him back.
“I’m an all day person.” He clarified. “Always ready to go!”
“Remind me to caffeinate more before socializing with you before the sun is up.” You teased.
“It won’t help.” Phoenix said, coming over. “Trust me.”
“Shay likes me just fine.” He said, moving to stand next to her, arm around her shoulder. “Right?”
“I suppose you’re alright.” She teased, leaning into him.
“You seemed to think I was more than just alright last night.” He winked.
“Hangman! No!” Phoenix complained, “I need to bleach my brain at that mental image!”
“Aviators, 15 minutes until you’re on duty. Final goodbyes to family and make your way to your jet for preflight checks.” Cyclone ordered, heading through the gate that led to the jets.
“That’s our cue.” Phoenix said, “Girls night when we get back?”
“Absolutely.” You and Shay both agree.
“Be safe!” You told her.
“Always.” She replied, smiling before grabbing her gear and heading to her jet.
You quickly said goodbye to the other squad members until only Bradley, Jake, and your dad remained behind.
“See you in a few days, Sweets.” Jake said, “Stay out of trouble until I’m back.”
“Don’t do anything crazy, Jake.” You said, hugging him. “ Please stay safe and please get my dad and Bradley back to me.” you whispered the last part.
“Yes, Ma’am” he replied, hugging you back then offering a reassuring smile. He stepped away with Shay so they could say goodbye privately.
“We should  be back in 3 days.” Bradley said, “I’ll try to text or call from the carrier, but I can’t promise.”
“Just be safe.” You said, wrapping your arms around his waist, “You’re precious cargo.”
“Always.” he replied, holding you tightly  “Sunshine… I..” he stopped, words leaving him. There wasn’t enough time to say everything he needed to say.
“It’s ok, Brad.” You whispered, “We’ll talk when you’re back.”
“I’ll see you soon.” he said, reluctant to let you go.
“I love you, Bradley Bradshaw.” You told him, stepping back and looking up at him.
“I love you too, Sunshine.” He replied, his voice cracking with emotion. He bent and placed a gentle kiss on your cheek before picking up his bag and heading through the gate.
“My turn.” Your dad said, standing in front of you.
“Dad…” You started, your voice breaking on a sob. “Please come back to me.”
“I love you, Firecracker.” he replied, “More than sky, more than flying. You are the best thing that’s ever happened to me, my proudest achievement in life. You are my entire world. Never forget that.”
“I love you too, Daddy” You cried, “Don’t you dare do anything stupid up there. I still need you. You’re coming back to me.”
“I’ll do my best, Baby girl,” He replied, knowing if there’s a choice, he’s making sure the other aviators are getting home first. “I promise to get Bradley back to you.”
“I need both of you.” You insisted, knowing your dad. “I will see you when you’re back. No officers in dress whites showing up at my door, Dad.”
“I’ll do my best.” He replied. “It’s time, Firecracker.”
“I’m scared to let go.” You admitted. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” He said, kissing your forehead. He grabbed his flight bag from the ground, then with one final glance back at you and Penny, he turned and walked to the gate.
“Does this ever get easier?” Shay asked, standing next to you, “Because this sucks.”
“Yes and no.” Penny said, putting her arm around her niece. “Y/N, will you be ok on your own at the house? If you’d rather be around people, you’re welcome to stay with Amelia and me.”
“I think I’ll be ok” You said, wiping the tears from your face.
“Offer is always open if you change your mind.” She said.
The three of you stood, watching as the people you loved disappeared into the hangars before you headed back to the parked vehicles. You and Shay made plans to meet at the Hard Deck with take out for lunch, Penny agreeing to join you both.
Deciding you weren’t ready to face the day yet, you drove the Bronco back home, dropping down back into your bed once you’d arrived and pulling the covers over your head. You buried your face into the pillow on the side Bradley had slept on, committing his scent to memory. Exhausted from the emotional rollercoaster you’d been on the past week, you fell into a deep sleep.
A/N: This one.... both broke my heart and mended it! Bradley is on his way to redemption! They still need to talk... and it’s coming! He’s not off the hook just yet! Thank you for reading!

Good endings to break-ups can leave behind wistful hope. That's not healthy. Neither is a nasty breakup but what's done is done. Words were said. People were hurt. Amends were tried. Joys in life for me were rare, and your promises were just fairy tales. Time passes in vain because the pain does not go away, But the heart does not want to accept reality..

"What advice would I give anyone wanting to start a fashion or lingerie line?" 🌈 I've been asked that question a lot during the past 3 years since Chakra Intimates launched publicly and my answers have varied depending on the stage of my own processes, but what I can honestly say now as I look back on the entire experience I've had, starting with fear of the unknown - to excitement from sample creation - to anxiety from manufacturing uncertainties - to pride of final product - to the ebb and flow of navigating social media and influencer connections - to now finally feeling at peace with what it was all meant to be for me personally as the founder/creator, is that if I didn't follow my heart, even when the fear was strong enough to paralyze my capabilities, I would never have the peace I have now about the journey it has been. ✨💕 So my advice is to absolutely take the chance on yourself, on your dreams, your visions, your goals. Do research and go in with as much information as you can gather, but don't wait until everything is "perfectly" planned because that truly doesn't exist. So many things are bound to change along the way that will upset that perfect plan anyway, so just remain open, remain grateful that you've been given the opportunity to dream and pursue that dream and just have faith that you will be taken care of because the Universe/God/Goddess really does love a stubborn heart and will use your story to inspire others as I hope mine has done. 🙏🌟 #stubbornheart #goforit #followyourdream #passionateliving #pursueyourpassion #businessopportunity #madewithlove #gratefulforlessons #chakrainspired #chakraintimates (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-8JOElHJyS/?igshid=1esf05jn0knp8
