what's your favourite thing about brenderesa?
Oh, boy, what a question! I'm gonna ramble like a madman here, because choosing only one favorite thing would be almost impossible, so go make some tea and get comfy, because this might be a little longer than I expected.
I think I mostly have an emotional attachment with this ship. TMR was my first fandom and Brenderesa my first wlw ship, I shipped them even before I knew what a ship was! And although the books are now a little blurry in my head after all these years, they still keep a very special place in my heart.
I think what lured me so much about them was what a strong presence they both had in a series where most characters were men. They were not the typical femme fatales or StrongFemaleProtagonists⢠I was so tired of seing in every piece of media (I have absolutely NOTHING against female protagonist, but you guys know what kind of character I'm talking about). They felt so real to me, I loved how they were allowed to be strong, but also vulnerable, emotional, caring, they didn't have to "man up" or act like men or step on other women to be strong, respected and seen as equals (Gosh, I remember fell in love with Brenda since the first time she appeared on Scorch Trials, she was one of my favorite female characters at that time and she still might be today). They both had strong personalities, they were smart as hell. They were so different and yet so alike!
I also liked how in the books, even when there is a certain animosity between them, they still help each other out and had in mind that their goal in the end was the same. They both wanted to protect Thomas and get this whole mess done with.
And boy, when I discovered Alternative Universes. THE POSSIBILITIES, MAN! They just became my OTP at the time and I didn't even notice. (Note: this all happened in a time where there was maybe only one fic in my native tongue of them (which was unfinished) and my grip of English was pretty lousy so I couldn't really read a lot about them. Not many fan arts either, I think, so you bet I treasured each of them like my soul).
What really bothered me was how the fandom tried to turn them against each other all the time like it was some sort of competition, when I thought that once they could get over that silly Thomas thing they could really be good friends. I genuinely believed that, so it became what I looked for every time a read a TMR fic: for them not to be enemies, and later, for them to be friends and without really realizing: for them to be lovers. I wished the book had given us more friendly interactions between them and, as it didn't, I began to picture them myself. I could totally imagine them protecting each other's backs, fighting side by side, tending each other's wounds, discussing strategies, WCKED and stuff, but also spending time doing just normal things like talking about things they liked, gossiping, reading, teaching each other new things, braiding each other's hair, you know, doing normal things together like friends do. And somehow, it was super easy for me to picture them in a romantic relationship, too. For me, it really made sense for such strong women to be together, or to at least be friends. There was no reason for hatred or for them not to get along, in my opinion. (And of course my heart just knew they would make a super cute and powerful couple haha!)
So, I told you my whole story with Brenderesa, but didn't really answer your question.
They have more in common than they think and if they gave each other the chance they could really get along. And that would only be the beginning for them to take over the world together, because I know that, together, they could really do anything.
What is my favorite thing about them, you ask? That they are both strong, clever, independent women who would make a helluva team together.
So yeah, basically it's that hahaha
Thank you so much for sending this ask, I had the time going through my first steps into the fandom and I remember this ship with great love and a bit of nostalgia so thank you for bringing it back up for me!!
Thank you for asking again, hope you have a great day!âĄ

Star Wars Episode IX predictions
Itâs going to be fine. Not great, not shitty, just fine. A passable movie. Itâs going to make a lot of people happy, and a lot of people really pissed off. If you love it, then youâre some Disney shill who likes being force fed the same schlop over and over again; if you hate it, then youâre just a hipster who thinks theyâre too cool for Disney movies and likes to be contrarian. It will be neither âthe best one since Empireâ nor âthe worst one since Clones,â though people will argue both of these points. The only valid opinion that everyone will be able to agree on is that it is not terrible. Thatâs a low bar.
The characters you want to get together, wonât. [correct] A glorified extra whose name has never been said on screen will have a big moment, probably sacrificing themselves for the greater good; my moneyâs on Snap Wexley or Carrie Fisherâs daughter. [partially correct; Snap dies] There will be one (1) confirmed LGBT character, probably a faceless alien who weâve never seen before; it wonât be any of the main three because Disney doesnât want to piss off China. [correct] Remember Lefou, or that support group guy from Endgame? Thatâs the best Disney will do, if weâre lucky.
Princess Leia will feel tacked on because she literally couldnât be written into the story; they have to stitch together extra material from Force Awakens, so all her scenes will be insubstantial, just as a way of paying tribute to her. [Iâd say correct, but itâs subjective] They honestly should have just killed her off in The Last Jedi, but that wouldnât have gone over well with fans because then all three of the original protagonists would be dead.
Speaking of, Luke isnât âdead.â Weâre supposed to believe heâs a force ghost, but I wonât rule out him being just regular flesh-and-blood Luke, like his disappearance was just a fake out. [wrong]
Finn and Rose will probably get together, rather than Finn and Rey, because Average Joe Midwesterner, who makes up a plurality of ticket sales, wouldnât want to see the movie if a black man got with a white woman, but he doesnât really care if a black man gets with an Asian woman. [wrong] Disney will hedge their bets. Rey will have no love interest because Disney is on a weird anti-romance kick; apparently you canât be a #StrongFemaleProtagonist if you fall in love [correct] (Rey/Finn is my OTP, but I know itâll never happen, so Iâll die mad about it; fight me)
The title should have been âRise of the Skywalkerâ instead of âThe Rise of Skywalker,â because I have a feeling Skywalker is going to become the New Jedi title. Instead of knights and masters, theyâll be Skywalkers (those who âwalk the skies,â figuratively, like astral projection, âplanes walkingâ). [wrong] The point is, Rey isnât secretly a Skywalker. [mostly correct] If there is a literal bloodline Skywalker who rises it will be Kylo Ren even though heâs a Solo, and Leia has never been called Skywalker on screen (sheâs always been Organa). [correct]
I really hope Disney doesnât go for the âboth sidesâ moderate centrist mentality, but I wouldnât put it past them; Jedi and Sith are like Yin and Yang, they need to be balanced, neutral, gray. Yawn. [wrong; good guys are good, bad guys are bad]
It will make two or three billion dollars, [too soon to tell, 12/24/19] biggest opening weekend ever, [wrong] all sorts of box office records, [appears to be wrong] itâll be in theaters until March, then it will go straight to Disney+ instead of DVD. The Disney+ version will have deleted scenes and extra subplots, so youâll need to pay to see it again to get the full story. Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, though the audience score will be drastically lower (50s or 60s). [WRONG: this is the most shocking part for me, itâs the exact opposite, critics were divided but audiences loved it]
Disney will say they have no immediate plans for Episode X, XI, and XII, but we all know thatâs a lie. Theyâll keep churning them out for decades; general audiences havenât reached Marvel Fatigue yet, so they are certainly nowhere near Star War Fatigue. But I am. Iâm burned out. I no longer enjoy this franchise. A few years ago I thought maybe it was the old adage, âtoo much of a good thing,â but it is by no means a good thing, not anymore. Now itâs more like âtoo much of things, just things in general.â
Oversaturation.
I know how the sausage is made, I know how Disney the entity runs its business, how it tries to maximize profits by minimizing contention. This will be a middle-of-the-road film that gets people in seats but will be ultimately forgettable. I will not be seeing it in theaters, I will wait until a friend buys or streams it so I can mooch off of them and not have to give Disney any more of my money.
My personal score will probably be a 3 or a 4 [correct]
General consensus will be 6-ish [wrong; 8 to 9]
Critics will love it, giving it a 9 or a perfect 10 [wrong; 5 to 6]
Post Script: Now that Disney owns 20th Century Fox, they should use the fanfare at the beginning. Â They wonât, but itâd be nice. Pointless, but nice. [they didnât]
Post Post Script: Take it away, Jay Sherman

Interview with Clare Di Liscia, author of NELIEM, which releases May 21st!
Thank you for joining us! We want to start by giving readers an idea of where NELIEM takes place. Could you give us a vivid description of the setting?
NELIEM is set in the Hugganoff empire. Specifically on one of its smaller islands, Madera, and the capital of Perla Del Mar, Playa Del Sol, which has a world renowned harbor importing from every port in the world. Â Madera is a small island with a population of only 3000 due to a plague that wiped out half the islanders. It is heavily forested, with wild vegetation, fields, and more orchards than you can count. Madera is known for fruit exports, especially a unique type of apple which cannot be harvested anywhere else. Surrounded by cliffs, it is a childâs nature wonderland with plenty of caves and secret lagoons to explore.
Playa Del Sol, full of multicolored homes surrounding the famous channels and bridges, is one of the most beautiful capitals in all the Empire. While under siege during the rebellion, it was decimated, with many leaving due to the carnage that ensued as the Prince regained control. Twenty years later, it is restored to its former beauty. Most wealthy families have a second residence in the city.
What inspired this setting?
My grandmother, who raised me, was born on a similar island in the Mediterranean. I drew inspiration from the stories she would share about her childhood as well as the discrimination my father lived through as a child.
When reading NELIEM, the magic in this world is very subtle and part of the backdrop for most of the story. What drew you to this magical realism approach?
I didnât want magic to be a main character in the story, but rather a given. This is a magical world, from the Hugganoffâs ancestral ghosts to their countless pagan practices. But it is not front and center. After the ruling class conquered basically the entire world, theyâve adapted many of their subjects religious customs and practices, making them their own.
The only people who stand out are the Outcast population, a monotheist culture/race that has prevailed against some of the harshest abuse imaginable.Â
The main character Oriana uses a character from her enemyâs legends to inspire herself to resist oppression. What inspired the legend? Is Neliem based on a real mythological or legendary figure?
In NELIEM, Iâve drawn from Biblical stories to reinvent Nehemiah. In NELIEM he becomes a prophet whose city is decimated by ruthless Hugganoffs attempting to eliminate the Outcastsâ monotheistic faith, which forbids worship of any other deities or spirits. When the Hugganoffs were unable to change the Outcasts, they simply killed all of them, hoping to rid their world of any contradicting beliefs. Nehemiah resurrected the entire city, all 8000 inhabitants, who then fled to safety. Afterwards, Nehemiah destroyed every evil spirit and pagan temple in the region and fashioned a weapon, the havaya, to counter the evil spirits who sought to destroy him, as well as teach his followers how to fight. Oriana is descended from her ancestors who were resurrected and sought refuge in Madera. Not wanting word to get out of this resurrection miracle, the Hugganoffs altered historical records to claim Nehemiah as Neliem, a spirit on their side who butchered their enemies in one of the bloodiest battles ever encountered.Â
Tell us more about your inspiration for Oriana and her peopleâs situation on the island. My father was born on an island similar to Madera, where he was tormented for being from a different culture and race. He told me stories of kids throwing rocks at him, and how he had to outrun the bullies by running along the cliffs everyday. My grandmother was a native of the island, a beautiful Sephardic Jew, whom my grandfather, a dashing Italian soldier fell madly in love with.
These two powerful events never left my subconscious enough to draw my own story from.
What has been the biggest challenge in writing this story?
I think the biggest challenge was capturing how vulnerable yet fierce Oriana is. We first find  her under a dusty gazebo, hiding like a cowards over the realization sheâs the old maid of her Village at the age of 17. None of her people will claim her. A huge embarrassment. Yet, she refuses to be beaten down. She takes charge, transforming herself to a warrior.
What has been the most rewarding part of writing this book?
Having Month9books publish NELIEM is a dream come true. Holding the book in my hands gave me the biggest rush.
What do you most hope readers walk away from NELIEM thinking about? I hope that my readers will be, like Oriana, transformed after reading NELIEM. That they will question their own motives and which path theyâre headed down. I firmly believe that itâs never too late to start making right choices, leaving the bad behind along with bitterness and pain, and becoming the person we were always meant to be.
Thank you to Clare Di Liscia for talking with us today. NELIEM comes out on May 21st! Preorder it here!
